Great review Gemma - you have very solid points and I think the things you wished were different/ more were the things I was terribly disappointed with. But I still do love Kristin Hannah and will read all her books 😊
I think for me the PTSD rep outweighed the things that were missing for me, but I get why you would rate this one lower that some of her other work.

I’m kinda surprised that you like Kristin Hannah so much. I read The Nightingale and liked it but unlike so many readers it wasn’t near the top of my favorites list. I listened to Kristen’s review of The Women and I’m not inclined to read it. I’m a product of the time period where I saw soldiers being treated so badly. I might like a nonfiction book that explores the soldiers, the politics and the people of Vietnam.
I think because Kristen Hannah was an author that reignited my love of reading in my 20’s she will always be a favourite.
I completely get why this might not be a book for you. It was an area of history (particularly the US parts) that I was less familiar with, so it really taught me something, but I can see that if you lived through it you would be less inclined to read about it.
I agree. I don't think her writing style is strong enough for this vey serious subject. (The Women.)
Hi friend! I lived through the Vietnam era and lost classmates and friends. I don't want to reactivate any memories of that fiasco. 🙁 I prefer historical fiction set prior to the 20th century. Colleen McCullough is a favorite.

I love Kristen Hannah's books, but this was my least favorite. Perhaps she wrote The Women in the way she did so that the writing didn't distract from the serious story, but her writing was very far from good literature, to the point of being written for children - not the graphic content, but the style. A very serious topic written too simply. Also very predictable romance that got somewhat in the way.
Yeah, not her best for sure!
