I loved this, was gripped from start to finish. Really bought home the idea of how quickly things can change for families in places where there are wars. Felt so many feelings with this one, it’s my fave for the win
Yes, completely agree. Did you see that it won the Carol Shields?!
@@GemofBooks oooh no I missed that, so pleased though - very well deserved
My fave book from the list and from the year so far. Great review as always ❤
It is awesome! I’m so happy to see it win the CS. If Soldier wins the WP I’ll be a very happy bunny now.
I just finished this book. What a fantastic story. I read it in two days because I couldn't put it down. I still have a few books on the shortlist to read, but this has moved to the top of my list.
I’m so glad in won the Carol Shields! I think it’s got a pretty good chance of winning the WP too 🤩
Sounds excellent! I've requested my library buy a copy.
Yes!! You won’t regret it! 🤩
I think a lot of women are going to have your reaction to Solider Sailor. I am not surprised you loved this book, when I finished it and was considering who might love it, your name was first in my mind.
Definitely a favourite from this years list - another one that I never would have gotten to it it weren’t for the WP 🤩
We are going to have so much to talk about on Tuesday’s show.
Uh oh - this makes me nervous 😬🫣
That was my favourite book for the whole woman’s prize. Loved it so much 🎉🎉
It is an awesome book 🤩
I thought I’d have to stop halfway through with this one because my copy had to go back to the library, but then I took some other books back and there was a second copy waiting for me because they’d duplicated my reservation! magic ✨
What a result!! What did you think of the first half?
@@GemofBooks slow but enjoying it! off on my holidays next week so hope to finish second half in the sun 🌞
I’m in the middle of Brotherless now and I’m enjoying it too. The only other WP book I’ve read is Soldier Sailor. I’d be happy for either to win.
They are my 2 favourites from this years list. Now that BN has won the Carol Sheilds I’d really like Soldier to win the WP 🤩
I loved this one too. I did have a slight issue with the slow build, but only because the prologue gave me different expectations. I wonder if it winning the Carol Shield's prize will affect its chances of winning the Women's Prize.
I know if shouldn’t make a difference, but I’m hoping that it means Soldier Sailof wins the WP now 🤞🏻
I am reading this one now and enjoying it.
Yay 🥳
🥰 Thank you for the review!!
You are very welcome! 🧡
This was one of my favorites, and it was also one that had been on my radar for years. Glad I finally read it! These civil war stories that are more purely ideological, like Sri Lanka, the Spanish civil war, or ethnic like the Balkans, make for the most harrowing stories because it ends up dividing families or pitting neighbors against each other. It makes the American Civil War seem quite tidy in comparison.
It really was heartbreaking. Glad to hear you loved it too 🧡
What has been on your radar for years? I think Brotherless Night was first published last year...
@@ddeg552 it’s been out in the US for 2-3 years. It was already in paperback when it was nominated.
@@StephanieP1901 that's interesting. It says 3 January 2023 everywhere.
It sounds really good! I still feel a bit unsure as to whether it’s a book I will enjoy, but you have me hopeful. 😊📚
I really think you should read it!!
@@GemofBooks just waiting for the library to deliver it…
@@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf hurry up library!!
@@GemofBooks I think it might finally be on the way! 🤞
We’re not here for the makeup 🤣. Look forward to reading this book!
Phew 😂😂 I hope you love it when you get to it 🤩
