  • I compare these two ukuleles. But, there's a twist - Eleuke have changed the Peanut. Mine is the old (pre 2014) model, have they changed for the better?

    Thanks, Simon! Wouldn't have known about the headphone and MP3 jack issue without you're vid...

    In late to the discussion, I managed to get a Peanut a couple years ago (pre-2014 model) used for $80 CDN and I love it. The tuner positions on the Risa scare me, looks too easy to get shifted out of tune due to contact with your body while playing. I've played my Peanut at 35,000ft on a cross Canada flight!

    Thanks a lot for eeview. I wanted to buy Risa but it is really expensive. Now I know there is a choice.

    Don't play my risa tenor stick no where enough 😪. Had a lot of issues with A string snapping on the metal bar it rests on.think it's sorted now had to but on lubricant and a piece of Teflon baking sheet on the groove!

  • @alansturgess1324
    @alansturgess1324 6 лет назад

    I had the tenor and it was great. Worth mentioning that the order in which the tuners work is the reverse of what you expect. That's because of the way the strings wrap round a bar and then attach to the tuner.

    • @phooto
      @phooto  6 лет назад

      I'm not sure what you'd expect! It's the only uke I've had with the tuners at the 'business' end.

      I never had a problem with the Risa tuners, it shouldn't put anyone off. The reason for this video was to compare the Risa end the Eleuke. I had to adjust the action on the Eleuke as it really didn't handle well, it still was no where near as good as the Risa.
      I do a lot of work with Bluetooth audio and I really don't like the idea of it in a uke. For band or recording use, the delay will nullify any perceived advantage, and the idea of a rechargeable battery fills me with dread! Fine on a MiSi pickup where the current consumption is low, but Bluetooth will make more critical use, and no fast charge, so if it fails on stage, game over. Maybe they want you to buy two!
      I've since got an ANueNue Tolele which has a superb action and has effectively replaced both.

    • @alansturgess1324

      For anyone not familiar with the ANueNue there's an excellent demo here. It's certainly worth checking out.

      Forgot to mention - I agree about the potential problems of rechargeables although there is the option to easily change for one with larger storage capacity. You're right for anyone who gigs - rechargeables are a VERY risky way to go. I don't gig, just play at home or in a local group and for that I stick with acoustic ukes. As for the action on an EleUke, I'll let you know, but adjustment isn't hard, I've done that a few times in past years with ukes and guitars just to make them more suited to a problem I have with my left hand. Also, as you might have guessed, I prefer baritone sized instruments, but that's just me.

    I have one of the first Eleukes and it's great. Tho it didn't have the mo3 input which I think is a great idea. Why take it away? No sense

    • @phooto
      @phooto  9 лет назад +2

      ***** More importantly, they've taken the headphone output away, too!

  • @UkuleleGo
    @UkuleleGo 9 лет назад +2

    Good to see these side by side. No doubt the Risa is the better instrument but the Peanut is tempting at the price!

    • @phooto
      @phooto  9 лет назад +1

      Ukulele Go What I can't get across on this video is the feel, handling and playability. The RISA is way more rewarding and with the omission of the headphone jack, it's only price that would make you buy the Peanut.

      Simon Taylor I'm told the next version of the Eleuke Peanut will have bluetooth - meaning you'll be able plug your headphones into your smartphone and listen to it. Sounds like a neat idea.

    • @phooto
      @phooto  9 лет назад

      Ukulele Go They haven't thought that out. I have not seen a smartphone yet that receives Bluetooth Audio. They are all Bluetooth source, not sink.

      Simon Taylor Guess we'll see when it comes out - it's not expected for another 4 months or so from what I know

      I've been working with Bluetooth chipsets and modules for years. Can't see how that will be done. Connecting to a speaker, easy, to a phone as a speaker/headphones? No.

    Do you know if you can tune either one to DGBE baritone tuning? I really want a light weight "travel" kind of uke, but I want the DGBE tuning. Any info will be appreciated! Thank you!

    Simon, Do you use a preamplifier for the Risa? If so what brand/type?

    • @phooto
      @phooto  5 лет назад +2

      No, it plugs straight into my Orange amplifier. Same as a Bass guitar, really.

    I would go for RISA too but they don't made electric ukes for lefties.

    Not sure if dry climate is an issue where you are, Simon, but would the harsh dry climate of Canadian winters be an issue for the RISA? I normally keep my solid-top /solid ukes in a hard case with a humidifier and I wondered what I should do with the RISA... I just received the soprano version and I'm so impressed with the quality!

    • @phooto
      @phooto  6 лет назад

      Diane Larabie i wouldn’t think it would be an issue. It’s a solid lump of wood. Much less susceptible than the thin wood on a normal ukulele.

    ...and a rechargeable battery in a ukulele is a BAD idea - which is what's in the 2014 peanut. If the battery runs out during a performance, etc., you will have to wait for it to recharge.

    • @myfyp2
      @myfyp2 8 лет назад +1

      Not to mention you can't easily change the rechargeable battery if it goes bad.

    Can you use normal soprano strings on either of them? I am too lazy to have different types of strings.

    • @phooto
      @phooto  6 лет назад +1

      RepublicOfZen yes, I think the peanut is Aquila and the Risa is pyramid from the manufacturers. Not special strings at all.

    • @RepublicOfZen
      @RepublicOfZen 6 лет назад

      Ok. so i can use soprano strings on the concert?
      Thanks. I think I will get the peanut because of the bluetooth connection. And easier to carry on an airoplane.

    • @phooto
      @phooto  6 лет назад

      You'll need slightly longer sets because of the wrap around nature of the strings, but yes, the gauges are normally the same. Worth strings come in double lengths.

    Super helpful in making a buying decision,. Has anyone tried putting an electric guitar pick up (such as humbucker) and a fishman. Triple play (midi pick up)? Probably would be too large for the uke, but just wondering. Many thanks

    • @UKULELERIGA
      @UKULELERIGA 2 года назад

      You could add cigarbox guitar pickup 4 strings. But would need metal strings. So cigarbox bridge etc.

    Does anyone know how to plug the Risa into Irig and make it work? I bought an IRIG2 but I can't get it to work on my phone using amplitune software. I asked around at the music stores but no one seem to be able to give me some advice to make it work.

    • @phooto
      @phooto  6 лет назад

      Pailin Williams I used mine with iRig and their app if that helps. Start by testing with that. If that works, then the issue is with the other app you are using.

    And isn't the Eleuke just a cheap copy of the RISA Uke-Solid?

    • @phooto
      @phooto  7 лет назад +1

      No, it's very different, it's active, not passive for a start. And it has headphone outputs. I do point out the differences in the video.
