Before Roger Moore brought "The Saint" to television audiences in the 1960s, George Sanders defined the role in the five movies he made playing Simon Templar from 1929 to 1941.
Here is an overview of his history with the character, which was originated by author Leslie Charteris.
MOVIES starring George Sanders as Simon Templar, "The Saint":
    The Saint Strikes Back (1939)
    The Saint in London (1939)
    The Saint's Double Trouble (1940)
    The Saint Takes Over (1940)
The Saint in Palm Springs (1941)

GEORGE SANDERS is one of my favorite actors of all time, and I'm a huge fan of any of his performances, including his Academy Award winning performance in ALL ABOUT EVE in 1950.
The man truly deserves more attention from film fans of today.
Oddly, I came to know his voice originally, as the voice of Shere Khan in the Disney cartoon version of The Jungle Book.
Later, when I was much too young to have seen this film, I saw his performance in The Kremlin Letter. That film left an odd impression on me, but might have influenced me into choosing to pursue intelligence while in the military. It took many years later after I married my 2nd wife who's a psychologist to have brought this to my attention decades after the fact. We had just seen The Kremlin Letter and I told her about seeing it as a boy.
That may sound like BS, but it's true.
Anyway, GEORGE SANDERS is a phenomenal actor and a fascinating writer as well.
If you've never read his autobiography, Memoirs of a Professional Cad, I highly recommend it. SANDERS is tremendously witty and never takes himself terribly seriously.
Despite winning an Oscar, I still contend that he was often overlooked when acting accolades should have berm more forthcoming for such an engaging thespian. Mores the pity.
Requiescat in pace, George Henry Sanders.

Hayward was actually more British than South African. It's true that he was born in South Africa, but to British parents, and grew up mostly in the UK.

I always thought the Saint was a spy, not some Robin Hood type character.
    Good video…thanks for ULing! 👍

He did some spying and work for the CIA during the Second World War, but those years are largely just referred to in passing in later stories.

Please don't forget John Howard who played "Drummond" to a Tee. The other fine actors we also grew to love in that series were E.E. Clive, the perfect Man's Man, Beautiful , sexy Heather Angel and gorgeous, debonair Louise Campbell. How about John Barrymore as the "Inspector"...

Simon often returned the stolen proceeds of crime to the rightful owners, less a cut for himself. He didn't keep it all!
