Metrum Acoustic is more open/airy, but both are excellent. A better amp might reveal more from these dacs. Thanks, these sample test always improves our critical listening.

Bij Jacques Loussier laat de Grimm duidelijk horen, wat er nog meer aan kwaliteit in deze opname zit. Interessante vergelijking! Bedankt Jaap.👍👍 Groeten Jan

Grimm UC1 seems more natural and coherent, especially in the highs (where the DAC3 seems to have a bit of glare, but maybe the Focals have it, or my headphones). Also, mids clarity is slightly better with the Grimm AFAICT. The differences are not so big they could not be attenuated with system matching, but the Grimm may be easier to integrate.

Leuk vergelijk 👍🏻 persoonlijke voorkeur vind ik moeilijk, de Grimm is de betere met meer detail, maar ik vind hem hier en daar wel wat puntig in het hoog.

I really like Pavane, have you tested it vs Denafrips / Sonnet Morpheus (that you recommended)?

The Grimm more air and detail, more engaging, especially on the first track, there the Metrum even sounds a bit veiled in comparison. Metrum win's it on tonality and timbre I think. Both sound very, very nice, you start with the Metrum and think this sounds good but then Grimm and that's a bit of a wow factor. I think its also projecting more holographic soundstage but not sure over youtube and HP.

"The Grimm more air and detail, more engaging, especially on the first track,..."
      Because of brighter sound!
"but then Grimm and that's a bit of a wow factor."
Yes and after a wow, you gonna end up with fatigue on your ears because of that brightnes.
I prefer deeper tone of metrum. Bass also have more heft.
It is a RULE that after a brighter sound, normal tonality sounds boring and less musical.
In my system I can choose if I want brighter or more balanced sound - thanks to speakers voiceing with correct moves I can make it sing this way or the other.

@@sheerenergy8602 Brighter is not bright and it is something I usually associate with speakers, not dacs. Indeed caution is required when coupling a detailed dac with speakers who are a bit hot in the highs, I can understand why you would find it to much on Focal speakers. Nevertheless, in my quest I've learned its a lot about compromise/balance and in dacs one of the compromises is detail vs engagement (timing, dynamics I suppose, maybe also tonality and timbre). The Grimm, to me at least, is both more detailed and more engaging, a rare quality that you'll only get at a certain level so yes, Wow. I'll tune the tonality with the speakers...
I'm not sure about that RULE, there is a lot of science in audio but that just sounds like a load of BS. When I hear a bright sound, returning to normal tonality is a pleasure for the ear and certainly more musical. A rule I do know is that what is perceived as a good sound is a very personal thing and I usually comment about the technicalities and the experience, not making assumption on what that will bring for other people with maybe/probably other preferences.
Congrats on your speaker setup, in my system I find the sound very engaging, and when I close my eyes I'm in a holographic soundstage in the middle of the performance, able to pick out every instrument and detail. We all have our likings, enjoy reading your rulebook, I'll just use my ears.

@@mouser78 I'm not talking about a sience refering to RULE. I'm talking to my expierience and the same expierience every good manufacturer is based when voiceing their equipment. And that secret lays in making sound bit btighter to a lot brighter vs normal tonality.
It's sounding more detail and more engaging, more musically to most of us, to our ears. Bright sound also is a faster sound to our perception. A bonus of bright is the sax, thrumpet etc. sounding better, sweeter, lovelier.
On a cons side its (brightness)masking a original tone ballance and its information, also sounds fatiguing.
And refering to electronic, when you match a darker sounding electronics to a a bit bright speakers, you gonna have a very nice ballanced system with a good amount of detail and shine without masking a midrange tonality and without fatigue on ears.
You got example on this video, this Sopras sound a bit bright with UC1 and with great tone on Metrum. Connect Asus sound card like xonar in place this streamer with UC1 and you get too bright sound, which gonna tireand fatigue our ears in minutes, not hours.
Connect speakers with less bass then Sopra no1 and its gonna be even more fatigue.
