  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is looking set to sue the small Texas town of Fairview if they reject the proposed Temple and its 173ft Steeple. I'm joined by Rebecca and Landon from ‪@mormonishpodcast1036‬ to discuss why the church feels they have a right to sue, and what else they could do instead.

@@firstLast-gb9kr I said nothing about them not following the laws so it's is a shadow argument. I said they think they are above the law and using false arguments in hopes to manipulate it and get what they want. The real argument is why is the church so invested in lying about the importance of the steeple? There is no doctrine nor has there ever been doctrine that supports their current claims of its importance to the covenants made in the temple. As a currently serving temple worker and coordinator and an active member my whole life it disgusts me that the church is playing this game about its height and steeple. The doctrine we do have is that we follow the laws of the land and respect the local government. Pushing a false narrative that the temple has to be a certain height in order for it to be functional is a lie and disrespectful to the local community and to our members. So again, whose ego so is wrapped up in this false and deceitful narrative that they think they are above the law by demanding the local government bow down to the church or face lawyers. It's disgusting and I am ashamed of my church. The church is following the wrong golden rule. Instead of "love the neighbor" they are using "whoever has the gold makes the rule".

I remember when the Frankfurt, Germany, LDS temple was built in the mid-1980s, the architect had to lower the steeple because the Friedrichsdorf Municipality requested that it not be higher than the local Huguenot Church. Additionally, the Church had to promise not to proselyte door-to-door in the vicinity. The Church Offices in Frankfurt back then complied with the request. This is the reason why the steeple in the Frankfurt Temple is not on top of the roof, but it is a standalone steeple on the side and - in my opinion - looks actually very nice :)! Today, the Friedrichsdorf community regards the LDS temple as "their" temple.

The temple building bullying reminds me of this poem,
"I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
No thing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

I think the reason the LDS church chose Fairview in the first place is because they mistakenly thought that 20 years ago the city council had approved a bell tower for the Methodist church which exceeded the height restrictions for the area. That was not the case. The Methodist church was given approval with conditions and when built the bell tower fell within the zoning requirements. Had the city council actually given the Methodist church approval without conditions the LDS church could then cry religious discrimination. Sorry, no discrimination here.

The Dallas Temple is impossible to get to. I live in East Tx. When I go to the temple, although East Tx is only 2.5 hours away, fighting Dallas traffic makes it necessary to leave my home no later than 5:00 am in order to only take in one endowment session and get home before 8:00 to 9:00 pm. (Sometimes it’s 10:00 or 11:00 pm depending on traffic and road conditions) Not only does it take all day, but there is no time to eat (the Dallas temple does not have a cafeteria and leaving the temple to eat would add hours to the event) which is a problem for my diabetic husband, and because we live in the outback of Tx, animals feeding and crossing the roads become not only dangerous, but potentially deadly going and coming.
I think people who know nothing about the trials of living in Tx, shouldn’t engage in speculation about our needs. I would certainly prefer a temple in East Tx than North Tx, but being able to circumvent Dallas traffic (and crazy construction interference) by heading West at Greenville across US Hwy 380 to McKinney would certainly make temple attendance more convenient and a whole lot safer.
Having grown up in Salt Lake, living there as an adult, and now visiting my children and grandchildren there, I can tell you with a sure knowledge, Utah temple attendance is a cake walk compared to temple attendance in Tx. Because of the terrain, distance, and wildlife and escaped farm animals on the roads….another temple in our region of Tx is a necessity. Have you ever seen what hitting a Tx longhorn does to a vehicle and its occupants? As a mortician, I can tell you….it isn’t pretty.
I appreciate the church being concerned about the well being and lives of those of us who live in the outer regions of Tx. Texas is a big state and not everyone lives within the big city of Dallas. A great number of us live in the countryside where it is beautiful and serene, but living under such distances makes travel and visits to town challenging, somewhat dangerous, and sometimes fatal.
Maybe the church could consider putting a Temple more eastwardly of Dallas? Rockwall, Greenville, Royce City, Tyler, or Longview might be nice🙂 Hey, if they can put a temple in Monticello Utah, why not one in East Tx?

If the temple work is so important, and it's expedient to get this temple up and running, why are they wasting so much time arguing and bullying over an unnecessarily oversized building and a stupid spire? Is it somehow critical to the effectiveness of the temple work that's done inside? Do people understand that the "spires" are actually obelisks and have a connection with occultic practices? Do members understand that every penny that's spent bullying these citizens over their "spire" and the size of their building could have been used for the good of humanity? 17:00 - so much to unpack here: They are hiding the numbers of members in the DFW area by stating the members in Texas overall and noting the 8 temples. The largest growth is likely in DFW but at what point are they going from and to - 5000 members, 10000 members ,,, ? The proposed temple will serve 16000 members according to them. Finally an exact number for the area... So how does that reflect the unstated need for the northern suburbs of Dallas considering the one Dallas temple already serves the entire metropolitan area.... and that 2 lane street is not that busy, nor is that parking lot??? The numbers are in fact irrelevant to a steeple that would be 40'-50' taller than the High Five interchange and a temple without it would still be able to serve those 16000.

      @elijahhawaii 2 месяца назад

The proposed temple is about 60 feet high as the main building plus the oversized "Hey, look at me!" spire that runs afoul of local ordinances for the neighborhood. Considering there are many temples without one and that is what's adding the extreme height, one can conclude that it's an extraneous and ostentatious flex. People don't oppose the temple, only the size for the location. Shorter, smaller. Mesa AZ has a temple that would meet height restrictions. It has no steeple. Sadly the church leadership has encouraged its members to say steeples are essential even though a church leader has contradicted that already as do the existence of temples without steeples. That steeple would be in the flight / landing path of a local airport, its lighting would exceed the dark skies ordinance, it would be a 17 story obstruction to the neighbors, which is significant as the neighborhood is residential. They did not anticipate a high-rise building being forced upon them when the zoning is technically not even the 68' already granted to the stake center. Intrusive is the word of the day. If they really want a steeple, then they have the Dallas temple as their example- a shorter building with steeples on the grounds. The tallest there is 95' and they could do a 60' steeple on the grounds with a 50' temple like the Mesa temple.... They sent their kids around with a petition to sign, telling neighbors that it's not really that high. 40'-50' higher than the High Five interchange is indeed very high, and it's sad to see the adults be so disingenuous and even sadder that they are teaching that behaviour to their children. One of the temple recommend questions to enter that temple is "Are you honest in your dealings with your fellow man?" Nope, they're not.

The irony with the bitter takes by this panel is that if a temple doesn't get built here something worse will. I hope the protestors get their way and they will find a cheap developer that actually plays dirty. NEMO and his buddies aren't doing any Fairview citizens any favors.

So I am actually a lawyer in Texas, and I have one question...is it "bullying" if the town if the Church is right? I ask because the Church is most likely right here. The town approved a very similar building for a different sect. There was no outcry, and it breezed through. The prima facie case for discrimination is on fairly firm ground legally speaking.
If a police officer violates your rights, you need to sue them. It's the same for towns. If the church sues and wins, everyone yelling "bully" should apologize, but I imagine they won't.

Which "very similar building for a different sect" are you mentioning? How tall was it? What happened to it? Was it built? Which sect? Did they work with the city/zoning?
      Thanks.

If it’s Creekwood UMC you’re referring to then to my understanding the bell tower was never approved. Also the proposed bell tower was around 20ft shorter than what the church calling for.
Then we come to roof height. No building has ever been approved with a roof line over 60ft. The church has the tallest religious building in Fairview by over all height, and the MAC religious roof height in town is around 45ft.

      @nate2797 2 месяца назад +2

@NEMOTHEMORMON it has been a minute since I looked at this, but the height of the tower was approved (other details were pending with respect to sound I beleive), and I thought that the tower height was 9 feet different and the roof height was higher than the proposed temple. From a legal case perspective though, the similarities combined with the comments at the meeting will be damming in a lawsuit. The council and the earlier zoning meeting were very much on board and there was no opposition. The outcry and even your involvement is just further evidence that this is a case for discrimination.
I'd say that there is at least (and likely better than) a 50 percent chance that the Church is correct if a suit proceeded. Because of that, they should sue, and it is not bullying.

@@nate2797 Please do check again (especially conditions of Exhibit C). Only the location and footprint of the bell tower was approved. Requested height of 154' was not approved, but sent back to P&Z.

fuck the golden ratio. It's an overused idea that's rarely actually useful. Any professional who claims it carries significance has no geometric sense. It is the litmus test between someone who actually has a appreciation of math and someone who looked at a random Wikipedia page for 5 seconds.
Furthermore I've never heard of a golden triangle. It is technically a term, but it's as useful as calling the square root of 11 a special number.

    • @jamesbaldwin7676

You're wrong my friend. The golden ratio, of which the golden rectangle is based, is fundamental in all of nature and then in building and architecture (which mirrors it).
This is a fact from a lowely seashell, to the human body
All buildings which fail to consider the "golden ratio" in their intial design, can't help but appear, alien and flawed.
      It's that important.
