Yes, there is a huge rivalry, but the violence a lot of the times isn't always due to the sports team's rivalry. There is an underlying regional gang culture that has existed for decades in the Bay Area. You'd see Raiders fans fighting other Raiders fans and 49ers fans fighting other 49ers fans. It just gets hyphy and sometimes it's funk on sight. The City vs The Town, Nortenos vs Surenos, and regional neighborhood tensions throughout the Bay Area...all meeting up at one game. Alcohol, football, machismo...recipe for a little chaos. Good times in Hunters Point at the Stick and at the Coliseum in Oakland. Just all honesty I promise you one thing the crazy way of tilt incident after any games anywhere but especially LA n Oakland Throw Philly in there as well or even Dallas you can bet 100% that it’s a certain type of person doing those things Not even real sports fans, nor are they ever of a certain Tone You know what tone I’m speaking of And they’re usually in the mid tone even more than full tone Sucks to have to talk in a way that may not be perfectly clear to some people, but that’s the world we live in today 100% we all know who are the ones ignorant enough to do these things over a game to go that far I mean, face painting already over the top Taking a game personally is way over the top Then you get these to go to games and they think that it’s actually worth pulling out a piece It’s disgustingly hilarious But call it what you want. Call me what you want for speaking the truth. We all know what it is every time this stuff happens. The lighter tones involved they were the ones getting attacked over a game for wearing a jersey while they’re with their kids and they get attacked over a jersey. It’s ridiculous. It’s literally the circus thanks to those certain types of people.
When I was younger I went to the game in 2011 with my family, it was actually pretty insane on how many fights were going on at once all around the stadium, luckily my family left early in the 4th quarter due to the raiders losing and we lived 3 hours away from the stadium. We’re gone before the shootings thank god. It was a experience I would never forget this rivalry was one of the most violent I’ve seen in person.

You don’t live in Cali. So you wouldn’t know. It was more then just these 2 teams fighting. It’s hoods and culture coming together to claim something. With all that, it creates a DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT.
I don't know why my reply got deleted, but I lived in Los Angeles from 1999-2004. Then I moved to Huntington Beach until 2012. My ex wife's grandmother lived in Palo Alto, right in the San Francisco Bay Area. I fully understand.
I was born in SoCal in 1982 & as a Los Angeles Sports Fan I can honestly tell you we have a Hardcore Rivalry with San Francisco & any other City in California/ North&South!
Never forget my first game at the Oakland Colosseum in 2002 was vs the Jets. I went to the bathroom to piss, and saw a jets fan get trash cans dumped over into his stall. Probably saw 4 fist fights that day. The dark and cold walk ways throughout the stadium smelled of weed and spilled beer... Don't think people realize how insane it was in Oakland... Definitely could not take your kids or family there. Oh yeah, Tim Brown caught his 1,000th reception that day lol
I went to the game in Oakland that was the first game they played each other after the ban. It was insane the amount of security and police they had there. There were 3 tier scaffolds all over the parking lot with Cops on every tier watching the parking lot as well as a ton of cops walking around. It felt like a prison yard.
@subifyouareagainstantifaan3928 its crazy. Some people are just passionate and some have money on the line too. But still it's ridiculous to hurt someone else over a fucking sport that you personally aren't in. Even if you were in that game unless a opponent did something to hurt you or your teammates it is still uncalled for. Like the saints bountygate, i understand opponents going extra hard against them or feeling some type of way for the bullshit they pulled.
@Sub if you are against antifa and BLM gang ties. I can tell u as a Bay native that 80% of the people that go to Raiders/Niners games aren’t regular fans of football. They just watch every 4 years
Growing up a niner fan and going to the raiders vs niners game was always fun to me because of how violent and passionate everyone got. Fights here fights there. It was fun, especially being a little Mexican kid talking mad shit to raider fans and them not doing anything cause I was a kid so my dad always told me to stfu lol. Raider fans that day loved the enegery. And it still the same to this day. Everyone in the town and city hate each other but when the warriors are in town we all come together as one. I sure do miss the games back in the day at the stick between these two teams. Made me fall in love with football
This season's match up between the two teams was a real thriller. As a Niner fan, I'm real glad we won, but I was super bummed that we played the Las Vegas Raiders and not the Oakland Raiders. Bay Area sports will just never be the same.
I grew up in the Bay Area in the 80’s and 90’s. I enjoy following and watching both teams. I am sorry that the 49ers moved from SF to Santa Clara, and the Raiders left Oakland. It’s just not the same as when they were just across the Bay from each other.
I could see this,in terms of quality, being on NFL Network, but I don't think Goodell would approve of it because of his strict control on the NFL's image
I grew up in the Bay Area. Yes, this rivalry between the fans is REAL!!! I remember arguing and trash talking between my friends when I was a kid up until now. There are deep divisions between the East Bay and the Penninsula! No, the fans did not like each other, and this included baseball (Giants and A's)!
I was the one who recorded that fight in 2014 😂, I remember hearing a commotion behind me and my cousin and seeing a couple Niner fans and Raider fans going at it.
I no interest in NFL, don’t know half the teams, or the history behind any of the teams. However this is so well written and put together that I got sucked in. You did an amazing job on this documentary. Keep up the great work! You have a new sub!
I think another large factor for shootings that occurred was gang associations with team affiliations. The two largest California gangs represent themselves with blue and red colors, they also use professional sportswear to do this as well. In northern California, gangs would often wear 49ers or Raiders to display what gang they were repping. For this reason at the high school, I attended no sportswear was allowed or wearing of blue or red. I wouldn't be surprised if the shootings were gang-related in some way as it's rooted in that culture.
SoCal has extra bad problems because of Crips and Surenos (both blue) at Dodgers games. Ever since the 9ers moved to Santa Clara, they've had even worse issues with Bloods and Nortenos (both red). It was only ever a minor problem up at Candlestick. Now you have "49ers fans" fighting each other in the damn bathrooms.
@X Q Yup,I remember seeing a video about that here, about "20 hats you shouldn't wear in LA". Even Dodgers and Angels hats aren't safe, supposedly, because of association with gangs. I actually own about 7 of the hats listed in that video, and I don't go outside without wearing a hat. I wear them to match my outfits more than anything, but it's like, what do I do if I'm ever out there?
As a 49ers fan during the height of this rivalry during the 2000s/10s, I was definitely scared of Raiders fans when I went to a Battle of the Bay match-up. Being in Candlestick Park and thinking you are going to get beat up or stabbed by a Raiders fan was traumatic.
@@243Abolerz Lived it, read on it, etc. Stereotype or not, based on number of arrests, it happens to be true to the point it affected ticket sales and product image even before they gave up and moved to Las Vegas.
I’ve been wanting a documentary of The Battle of the Bay for years now. Dope job bro! Keep this up. I hope this rivalry can be safer and continue on during the preseason now that one of them is in LV…even though it’s evident both fan bases have extreme fans 😒.
The rivalry among fans will remain and may get violent in Santa Clara but Vegas doesn’t have a Raiders fan base. I’m sure Raiders feel like they’re on the road when playing at home - it sure looks like it on TV
My father was a Raiders fan until they moved to LA. He called them the “Traitors” and became a 49ers fan. Said his friends never forgave him for that. After he passed, my stepfather was a diehard 49er fan since he was born in S.F. I’ve heard so many sides to rivalry and, even though I don’t live in the Bay anymore, I’m still a hardcore 49er fan and love the history of the rivalry, even though it’s one of the most underrated in the NFL. It’s sad the Raiders moved to Vegas.
You forgot about the '83 Raiders' Super Bowl win against Washington. Also, the closest the Raiders and 49ers were to meeting in the Super Bowl was all the way back in 1970, when both made an appearance in their respective Conference Championships.
@@FortressofShred Oh yeah, forgot about 1990 when the Raiders and 49ers both lost in the conference championship. Bills smoked the Raiders in that AFC Championship
The both made it the the conference championship games in 1983.. The 49ers lost to Washington in the conference championship, the Raiders beat Seattle.. Also, they both made the conference championship in 1990, the Raiders losing 51-3 to Buffalo, the 49ers losing 15-13 to NY Giants
As a Niners fan, I remember that era quite well. It was the MySpace days. I have no idea how, but I linked up with some Latino Niners fans who would go "take over" Networks Associates Stadium / the Coliseum. Go a 100 deep to the tailgates, waving flags, talking mad s××t, and recording everything so it could be put online that night. The thing is, though, remember how I talked about the "era"? It was not only football, with Raiders & Niners fans hurting each other (although, side note: Jeff Garcia said he refused to let his family come to Raiders - Niners games, for their safety). It was also a horrible time for baseball violence among the S.F. Giants & L.A. Dodgers fans. The most infamous story is that of Bryan Stow, who was severely beaten, to the point of having irreversable brain damage, never to be the same. The Giants still have him throw out the 1st pitch every season or so. There was also a story of a family friend who was murdered for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was leaving a game and had drank some beers during the game. He brushed up against the car of some Dodgers fans & 3 of them hopped out & killed him. During their defense, they claimed they were intimidated and _HAD_ to jump out of the car and kill him, (with weapons) 3v1. Neither the judge, nor jury, were amused.
I'm sorry for your lost and this is just ridiculous. No excuse for any fan to attack another person and I'm a Dodger fan. I would look to fight someone if they have another team colors on.
As someone who went to almost every Niner Raider game for 8-10 years I can tell you I was not shocked when they stopped the games all together. There were so many fights at the tailgate, walking up to and entering the stadium, at the food and the seats and the worst was at the bathrooms or in the cuts at the Stick and the Colosseum. People literally got killed multiple times at games in SF and O town. But I was still reping the Raiders at the Stick just didn’t try and fight people and yell at fools.
I went to as many Battle of the bay games as possible. In the O or the City it didn’t matter. My son was a Raiders fan and I am a 49ers fan. After that last game at Candlestick I told me son that we would no longer go to battle of the bay games. Then went home to learn that there was two separate shootings and a stabbing.
@@MarloSoBalJr Not sure if there is any proper they could build in or next to SF. LA was fortunate they were able to replace the Horsetrack next to the Forum in Inglewood.
Growing up in the bay I’ve been to a couple of these games and most of the craziness I saw was more related to people who don’t like each other from the streets and not so much my team vs your team. Obviously it’s a rivalry and a bitter one at that, but all the extras were not football related and that’s on mamas
True personal beef PLUS the added emotion from the game is a recipe for a disaster waiting to happen. Nice job pointing that out not many would think of this. Teams that are closer to each other like that have the same issue. I've personally seen personal beefs come to a conclusion at sports events like that.
This rivalry was so deep Goodell had to up the security and these two teams hardly played against each other only because the brawls in the crowds and fans, multiple fights broke out at once every time these teams encountered. Trust me I’m a niners fan. I would be in these brawls as well. if you live in California you would know it’s bragging rights.
It's not that serious its just a football game😂😂 my closest homie likes the niners and I never hate on them nor have we fought its all respect but I can't speak for all raider fans I genuinely like players from all teams and I watch some niner games too 💯 but always entertaining seeing them play each other since its so rare
Grew up in San Francisco in the 80’s and 90’s. At schools , playgrounds, neighborhoods as far as sports teams went it was Giants and Niners and as for the Dodgers and Raiders, they were the hated rivals. It is a shame how some individuals behave at the games. They give the real fans a bad name. Great video.
There’s a book called 1984 that says in the future they won’t allow chaos. Cancelling that annual game was an example of it coming true but fun while it lasted.
I'm a Dodgers and 49ers fan, since both the Raiders and Rams moved out of LA right before I was born I saw no reason to support either of those 2. I get flack from both sides but I've met people from the central valley who are also Dodgers/49ers fan.

@@blakemcmahon6539 raiders fan base is huge this is the first time in their history that a lot of the other teams fans show up but the chargers have always been like that so they should’ve went to Vegas
That was the plan but Stan Kroenke opted for the Chargers to be the 2nd tenant because he knew the Raiders we're gonna be the "primary" team in his own stadium, for his Rams. It was a calculated move to bring the Chargers cos they were in the same situation as the Raiders, so Vegas made the call and brought a high risk team to a high roller city. Raiders still sellout in LA as they have no choice but to face the Chargers twice every year and the Rams once every four. Nothing worse for Kroenke than to have to deal with the Raiders twice for both Rams & Chargers this season
I was at The Stick and The Oakland Coliseum as a season ticket holder with the 49ers up until they moved south and the problem was with the gangs 99.9% of the time and alcohol 💯% of the time. I always looked forward to the Battle Of The Bay because it was a pride thing but my wife and I would always leave a bit after the 3rd quarter just because of how sketchy it was. I've seen a lot of fights and a guy get stabbed in front of us in the parking lot.
Was wondering if anyone was going to mention the gang violence. That’s what a lot of stabbings and shootings were - Norteños smacking people they thought were Sureños. That’s why it was worse when Raiders came back from LA
Sports fans can really be nuts sometimes… When one of my best friends moved back to The States in mid/late-2000’s, he found his way back to New Orleans, and we were Skyping one night. All of a sudden, he goes, “Uh oh. I think that was gun shots. Hmm. Hold on a second, I’m gonna go check.” Lol I was like, “Bro, please stay in your house if you think there’s shots poppin’ off.” And being the guy he is, he replied, “Well, if I was shot and dying on the street, I would want someone to find me and call an ambulance.” So he left me hanging for 10-15 minutes. Maybe a bit longer. And when he came back online, he said, “Yeah some dude in an Eagles jersey got shot outside a bar cuz he was gloating about how they beat the Saints that night.” It’s possible there’s more to the story. But New Orleans is nuts, and everyone is strapped. So it’s not so far fetched to imagine two drunk idiots getting into a fight, and one dude pulling his gun. Edit: I should mention he grew up in the hood and was used to being around guns and gang activity. So that’s why he had no concern regarding his own safety, and was comfortable to go and investigate. My Canadian ass woulda stayed home. And I woulda stayed away from the windows. Lol
The NFL only banned preseason games between the two teams, and the ban was lifted once the Raiders moved. The two clubs still play each other every four years in the regular season. They are playing each other this Sunday.
Moss was totally useless to the Raiders. I watched him intentionally flub receptions, it was obvious he didn't want to be there. As to the battle of the bay. There's a photo of Jim Otto running off the field victorious. He'd pushed back his retirement when he found that SF was on the schedule. That photo was taken when Ray Guy put away the game beating SF. Otto HATES SF more than any fan could be capable of doing.
As a niners fan who grew up in sac where you were either a raiders or a niners fan maybe a Seahawks fan, this was one of the best rivalries imop. I’m a niners fan and my dads a raiders fan so even more prominent of a rivalry in my life. And I promise this was a BIG RIVALRY.
The WORST thing that really kicked off the truly nasty rivalry between the fans really jumped to 100 after Jerry went to the Raiders. That's what really did it.........
Got the pleasure to have gone to 2 bay bowls in Oakland when the raiders were in Oakland playing the 49ers the fan fights were entertaining just on their own
The Raiders in the 70s and 80s were something else. Wish they played tougher like that, so many losing seasons the last 30 years. Not the same aura about this team anymore.
My entire family is from SF and were all die hard Niner fans. Of all these games, that 2000 loss hurt the most. I remember after Tim Brown catching the OT TD, my twin brother just falling to the ground with his face in the carpet. He kept his face buried in that carpet for at least 20 minutes as people from around the neighborhood that were there for the BBQ my family threw for the game having to step over him. We weren't kids, we were well into adulthood at that point. Needless to say that one hurt.
I always respect the Raiders history but that fan base is insane. As a 49ers fan I never understood why the hate or violence over teams. I don't mind debating or friendly trash talk. It's all fun and games. I was at the last battle of the bay game. I experience Raiders fan being respectful didn't have any fights whatsoever. I witnessed fights that were out of control.

I could also say the same for Coliseum area in Oakland but to a lesser degree. Those who live there “know”
In the 60's I was in High School and the team rivalries were started by our couches...in one home coming game they brought in the local and country police so the other team bus could LEAVE after the game they won... it was insane as we were in the locker room by then when it started. Kids, rocking the bus and totally blocking the only drive to the field! We players came out, some half dressed with many adding to the problem. I spent 9 years in the US Army after High School, was a Sargent, served in Vietnam ... but this was pure insanity. Thank you I'm from the UK so football violence is nothing new here but I never thought that it could happen in the USA. My impression was of good natured rivalry with fans not being segregated and all the action on the pitch .
Don’t be mistaken , this is a California team, there are lot of gang members who are NFL Football fans and they choose the wear and color of the team to represent their gang, and it so happened to be the different gangs like different teams, which cause lots of altercations. Now don’t get me wrong there are just fans vs fans , but this goes deeper than just the sport of Football, at least in the States of California.
I'm from England and a Raiders fan. I lived in LA in the 90's. I went to a game between the two teams and it kicked right off big time .Off duty cops and fireman that were Raiders fans were even fighting with 49ers fans.

You should work for NFL Films. This is amazing work. Very cinematic.
You literally can't wear any sports hats in LA.
I believe that is what police investigation concluded that it was gang related
@@henrymanzano2201 The L.A. hat is usually worn and represented by Los Avenidos or the The Avenues in Highland Park off of Figueroa in Los Angeles.
As a 49ers fan during the height of this rivalry during the 2000s/10s, I was definitely scared of Raiders fans when I went to a Battle of the Bay match-up. Being in Candlestick Park and thinking you are going to get beat up or stabbed by a Raiders fan was traumatic.
Yep that's Raiders fans when they lose they want to beat people up .. when they win they want to beat people up .
Candlestick was in the most dangerous part of SF too those games were scary leaving the stadium you really had to be on ten toes

And I'm sorry for you and your family's loss. May he rest in peace and his family have closure.

True personal beef PLUS the added emotion from the game is a recipe for a disaster waiting to happen. Nice job pointing that out not many would think of this. Teams that are closer to each other like that have the same issue. I've personally seen personal beefs come to a conclusion at sports events like that.

Sports fans can really be nuts sometimes…
When one of my best friends moved back to The States in mid/late-2000’s, he found his way back to New Orleans, and we were Skyping one night. All of a sudden, he goes, “Uh oh. I think that was gun shots. Hmm. Hold on a second, I’m gonna go check.” Lol I was like, “Bro, please stay in your house if you think there’s shots poppin’ off.” And being the guy he is, he replied, “Well, if I was shot and dying on the street, I would want someone to find me and call an ambulance.”
So he left me hanging for 10-15 minutes. Maybe a bit longer. And when he came back online, he said, “Yeah some dude in an Eagles jersey got shot outside a bar cuz he was gloating about how they beat the Saints that night.”
It’s possible there’s more to the story.
Lol

I'm from England and a Raiders fan. I lived in LA in the 90's. I went to a game between the two teams and it kicked right off big time .Off duty cops and fireman that were Raiders fans were even fighting with 49ers fans. Throw in the LA gangs that had enjoyed 4 hours of drinking in a car park in 80 degree weather it was a war zone. I don't think European hooligan firms would last five minutes with that mob. Plus some peope take guns to the games
I miss the Oakland Raiders.
I'm a lifelong member of The RaiderNation, my wife is a Niner. I grew up in Florida, she grew up in San Jose. We visit Disney & Universal Studios all the time, each of us wearing our fan gear. People always ask us how our household is with the rivalry. I always say, "I love her, but I don't like her."
Back in the day one couldn't walk through the streets of Oakland in Niner gear.
So much changed.
Anyone remember tailgate parties at Rickey's
R.I.P
Rickey and Rickey's Sports Bar
The Buddy Ryan body bag game is also historic,The Bay and Inglewood/Oakland have always been rivals in everything.
What a jaw-dropping video😲. Keep it up. 🙌
Thank you! Will do!
I loved the battle of the bay. The raiders are what really made me proud to be from cali. Knowing this one game has such a influence in the NFL and its coming out the place i came from. It was crazy to always see my family get so serious over the game cuz they had stayed in oaktown for a while and had me over there. I miss it i hated when my team moved to LV especially now this season
Thank you for covering this, I grew up on this rivalry. I'll forever be an Oakland Raider, but I've always been an SF Giants fan too.
Battle for the bay was lost when the raiders moved to Vegas
It took the Raiders to move to Las Vegas for the Niners to face them again, which is this upcoming year on January 1st! Great way to start the 2023 year! 😁👍✊️
I hope the Raiders return to Oakland. They have NO business in Las Vegas.
thanks you Mr Blanda even though I'm not die hard Raiders fan had to route for the old guy
growing up in central cal the rivalry was crazy in school it would be whos better niners or raiders.. my first nfl game was niners vs raiders and it was an unreal experience to watch the “battle of the bay”
If u was a 90’s baby and grew up in the bay.. u knew hella shit goes down when the raiders and 9ers play each other 🤦🏽♂️
I went to a Raiders game to root on the visiting team and had to leave early as all of the assaults in the stands broke out. Their fans were fine until they started losing!
Steelers & Bengals had some nasty meetings...yes SIR!
Browns too
Always looked forward to the Battle of the Bay!
What an amazing production! Glad its not am A.I. voice either. Keep it up with videos like this LOVED the way the score and videos were perfectly in cohesion. Amazing production , top tier! 10/10
As an all time raider fan, this is extremely accurate 😂
