    I grew up in Johnson City (1959-1979), as did my parents. What is now called Johnson City looks nothing like the vibrant and incredible downtown that was within walking distance of my home. In the 70s the “big fish in our small pond” wanted to push business from downtown to the north end of the town. They did and destroyed the city in the process. I wish I could show everyone just 1 day in 1964 and a stroll through downtown at Chrismas. It truly was magical.

      Hi Krissy.
      I plan to move to NE TN from FL in a year or so.
      Is JC affordable? Not sure if you rent or bought but ae both options affordable there? Is it easy meeting new people?

      @@Gypsygirl9 Hello! I can only compare JC to Boston where I came from. It is extremely much more affordable. The people are so nice here. If you like to do outdoors type of activities or anything in the arts, you'll have no problem connecting with people. Good luck!

      @@asmallhedgehog420 Thanks! I like your comment a lot more than the "go away" diehards. We're happier here than we ever expected to be, and we didn't bring any liberal politics with us either, nor did we buy a new construction house that people who express concern about with expanding population numbers.

Same thing happened when I lived in the Bronx. Thanks again for your speedy response! From Francine AkA Mississippi Dreamer( my old trucking handle)

    Thanks for the video. I was looking at moving to Tennessee or NC. And had Johnson City on my list due to the cooler weather. However, after watching the video it seems like an older, somewhat run-down town. I didn't get a good vibe from it. So i will cross it off my list

      Yeah cause it was made in the middle of the 1800s and it just started getting popular so it has not a lot of people

      @GermaTroo I see. So are more people starting to move there then? If so, I would imagine in time it will start expanding and modernizing.

    Looks like many of the buildings are boarded up and for lease. Is this an accurate assessment?

    • @ThePerfectWalk
      @ThePerfectWalk  3 месяца назад +1

      I would say that’s accurate here and in almost every small town in America unfortunately. That’s the impact of ‘big box’ retail and malls over the last 40 years.

      theres been quite a revitalization movement in JC. we used to be 'lil chicago' but now the locals say 'little asheville' as thats what its becoming. lots of curio shops, local markets, coffee spots, and restaurants down there now. the john sevier public housing building is being moved to south roan street next to food city. it is being gentrified but at a pace that doesnt make it unreasonable to relocate if needed.
      that said, downtown apts run 12-1700$ a month and there really isnt a reason. its not as active as asheville is, particularly after night. outside of downtown, housing is still 500-1200$. i do believe that johnson city has grown a lot in the last year and will continue to do so as a popular retirement destination.
