- If you are getting the ABS and ESP lights with a VISIT WORKSHOP warning and the BAS ESP light, then look no further. Chances are your brake light switch needs to be replaced. This video is shot on an E320, but many Mercedes cars includig SL500, SL55 AMG, SL600, CL500, CL55 AMG, CL600, S500 S430, CL65 AMG SL65 AMG, S350, S65 AMG, S55 AMG, SL550, SL63 AMG and S600 use the same Brake Light Switch and setup.
1998 e320. the "stealerships" might hate what you are doing, but i love what yoou are doing !
You are right about calling them stealerships, bobby. Thanks for the kind words.
This problem is common when you disconnect your battery. With the engine running, simply turn the steering wheel completely to the left, wait a few seconds at the stop, then do the same thing to the right. Then restart. You will then need to put the windows in the up position for a few seconds, then in the down position with the first position of the ignition button. Finally, the same goes for the sunroof.
All I had to do was turn the wheel all the way left and right for a couple seconds and the lights went away without having to restart the car. Thanks for this helpful information!
Great video, super shots and explanation on how to remove/install brake switch.
Hi Eric, thank you.
Thank you for the great explanations. My 2002 E320 Wagon had ESP BAS ABS System Visit Workshop lights on. (138,700 miles) This was one of the easiest repairs I have done thanks to this video. Fixed my problem and the part was only about $26. Probably would have cost me over $300 at the dealership.
You are very welcome, Lisa.
did your break lights work before u got it replaced
@@jdinero1716 no
I replaced it it work for a sec then it came back on the springs keep getting stuck
Was it stopping your car from starting
Thanks so much for this video, saved me all kinds of money!
You're very welcome, Sam, and thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks a lot🙏🏼jus installed mine works like a Charm!
Wonderful, thanks.
Great video! My brake lights stays on the entire time my car is running and I'm getting the same warning lights as displayed in your video I hope this fix my problem
It should. Let us know plz.
Did it work? Mine has the same problem at the moment

@masood Thank you for the videos that you produce! Please help? 2003 s430 with symptoms: No Cruise Control, BAS, ESP lights on dash and sometimes I see the high mount brake light on when not pressing the brakes. I purchased an OEM BLS from Mercedes and when I removed the old, I noticed there was a difference in length. I ensured that the new BLS was pulled all the way out before installing, however, I still have the same symptoms as the old BLS. No change!
Hi Errol - have you done a diagnosis to see if it is your BLS? Have you checked your speed sensors?
@@masood-tv you've helped me so many times with your vids on the w220 chassis!
No I have not for both. I will try to borrow a scanner tonight and will report back
@@masood-tv Hey Masood. I borrowed a scanner. Got 2 errors:
The Stop Lamp Switch Signal Sent From The Traction System Via
The CAN Bus Is Implausible.
&
The Right Rear Wheel Rpm Signal Sent From The Traction System
Via The CAN Bus Is Implausible.
What fo thet mean?
Hi, so you will have to replace the speed sensor first. Then see if you still get the BLS code afterwards.
@@masood-tv I am sorry to ask you another question! Would you suggest all four speed sensors or just the rear right?
I'm not sure what's going on with my 2000 e320 wagon, but these lights come on and I don't have any brake lights until I replace the brake light switch. it lasts about a month month and a half. Then the dash lights come back on and I don't have brake lights again until I replaced the switch again. They are OE brake light switches they come in a Mercedes bag anyway. I'm on switch number 5......
Hi, it may have to do with very hard braking and/or pedal travel distance...
Remove and pull the part that is spring loaded until you hear it click out.. May not have to buy another...I have heard similar complaints.
Thanks my dude, video helped!
Glad it did, thx.
Still come on. Maybe coming on from replacing front driver control arm and swaybar link and spinning the rotor all around?
Hi Masood, I got all of the errors that you show in your vid but I also can't shift out of park and the car won't start. I have a W210 wagon. Everything had been fine, no issue at all. DO you think it could just be the brake light switch affecting all of this? Thank you and thank you for this great video!
Hi, there could be a number underlying of reasons for your issue with a bad Brake Light Switch being one of them...this would be the cheapest one to tackle and see if it solves your problem short of having a diagnosis done. Besides being cheap, these will go bad over time so consider it a preventative maintenance if it doesn't solve your issue.
@@masood-tv I thought that as well, thank you for the reply and the vid!
No problem.

My E300 has this problem when I first pressed the brakes and let go the BAS ASR Lamp Defective errors showed up I checked and no brake lights when the brake pedal is depressed. I replaced the switch as you showed here and that fixed the problem for some time (3-4 weeks) until one morning I started it up hit the brakes and the same errors showed up with no brake lights. When I first installed it did not work but then the next day it did, on one other occasion it didn't work then when I drove it later it functioned properly. I'm wondering if this could be a bad fuse or a false contact being made somewhere?
Hi oiroliv - yes, sounds like a bad connection...
@@masood-tv thank you for the reply I reconnected the switch and checked the fuses in the drivers side panel seems it was a fuse not making the proper connection again thanks
@@oiroliv glad it is fixed. Thx
I have a w208 and I'm getting the same codes, I replaced it with a Mercedes part and I still got the codes as soon as I hit the brake to put it in gear, so I bought another one and it's still happening, so you think it could be a speed sensor or a steering wheel angle sensor , any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
Hi. It is best you don't spend money unnecessarily. Have the codes read somewhere...
Hi mate, great content, I replaced this switch 5 times and it always gets faulty after a few days, what can be the problem?! Thanks btw
Hi, faulty how? Does the little rod that gets pressed become shorter? Do resistance values change? Do you have a volt meter to check a good one against the bad ones? Is it possible the fault is down or upstream? Check the brake pedal also as a suspect plz...I think you need to troubleshoot more, mate.
Problème de batterie trop faible à vérifier en premier.
Voici ma méthode :

You will then need to put the windows in the up position for a few seconds, then in the down position with the first position of the ignition button. Finally, the same goes for the sunroof.
I did this but only the 3rd brake light in the window works. Now the other two on sides do not work? Any suggestions?
Hi Russell, sorry to hear that. Obviously, you have an electrical (connection) issue. If you own a volt meter, try to isolate the problem starting at the brake bulb sockets and back to the brakes.
I just changed it out, but my dads car is still stuck in park…..it has 367k miles on it but runs great cause he doesn’t drive it crazy, do you think it just needs a whole new shifter? Or is it something else it could be?
Hi Michael - ff it is not the Brake Light Switch, then check that the battery is fully charged. If it is, it could be a defective solenoid, faulty computer (ECU or TCU), or even a broken cable.
There is a manual override right underneath the shifter cover to test and eliminate a couple of the scenarios...
@@masood-tv We’ve had to use the manual override multiple times, but it shifted properly for a few days after we replaced a fuse actually and then it stopped working again. I found a shifter on eBay for like $110 so I figured I’d just replace it
@@michaelbroderhausen2163 any updates ?
my brake lights don’t work when I press the brake you think this will be the solution?
Hi J Dinero, not necessarily. But, if you own a multimeter, start with the brake lights in the back and a wiring diagram to troubleshoot. If both brake lights went out at the same time, find the common touchpoint for both and start from there. Also, check your fuses first.
Hi
On my e220d 2016 dashboard light displays parking brake see owners manual also P light is on.Hold not working main dealer said needs new ESP CONTROL UNIT Quoted me £3000 is there anything I could do before going ahead and changing esp control unit.please let me know.thank you
Hi Abdul Alim, it is hard to tell from afar. I suggest you get a second opinion and then source a second hand unit if it is that...
My w210 can't set the speed (sometimes it can't be set), sometimes it tells speedtronic visit workshop, if you know about this error, please let me know.
Hi, if you can get access to an device, see if there are any codes. I would suspect one or more speed sensors...
Ok so my 01 e320 got "spooked" in a thunder/lightening storm and now my inner dome lights, front running board and tail lights will NOT turn off. I am having to unhook the battery after driving whenever I turn it off in order to save the battery. Tried the Brake Light Switch,..but still having this issue. Dealership is quoting me $300 for a part. Other places pricing 20 o 30 for Relay Control mod. Need some advise.
Hi Annette, sorry you are having this issue. That could be caused by a number of factors. It is hard for me to tell without running some diagnosis. I would presume it has to do with a short or bad wiring...somewhere in the harness, or even a relay. Go with the cheaper option first and see if it fixes it. If you have a multimeter (one that can also read resistance values), you could run your own tests. Of course, you will need a wiring diagram also (search Google) and some knowledge of car electronics to pinpoint the issue.
@@masood-tv Thank you so much, I will inquire if my guy has the Multimeter (w/ resistance values) 🙂as well as download the Wiring Diagram. Of course Dad did teach me to "begin w/ the cheaper option first" so thank you so much for your advise. I will make sure to let you know how it goes. Blessing on your evening.
@@annettelhunt8806 you are very welcome. Since you have 3 different lights on when the car is off, look for junction points first in the wiring diagram for a clue...a visual inspection in those points may give you the clue.
also my headlights are missing a screw or 2 could that affect it too ? Thank you
I doubt it.
Hi, can you tell me where the body control module is on a ‘99 E320? Thanks
Hi - You may be talking about the driver side SAM, part# A0195455632, which is located in front of the firewall under the hood.
Id like to get a front sam for 05 e320 cdi, is this the part number? Do you have a sam?
Hi Joro, please call your local dealer, supply your VIN#, and get the exact part number for the SAM module of your vehicle.
Have the same lights but goes into limp do u know what it could be ?

My abs esp and bas lights all came on after I changed a tire while I was driving they came on and I could not accelerate and then my check engine light came on as well
Hi David, check your speed sensor and make sure it is connected. Also, turn the wheel all the way right and left a few times and see if that makes a difference.

Should I disconnect the battery for this?
No need.

Hi, I changed out the switch, but the BAS/ESP light remains on, whenever it turns on my blinkers stop working, but only my blinkers. Typically after about 40 minutes of driving, the interior lights will turn on and the blinkers will starts working again. This process repeats every time I turn off the car. Very rarely I’ll turn on the car and the esp light won’t turn on, and the car will run just fine. Any idea of what it could be?
@therandom7153 hello. I have not run into that scenario. Sounds like a short somewhere, perhaps. You will need to dig deeper or scan the car for codes.
How do test to see if the Brake Stop Sensor Switch is bad?
Hi Terrence, the Mercedes cars will display a warning or multiple warnings on the dash as shown in the beginning of the video alerting you. Also, when you press the brake pedal none of the brake lights in the back turn on. Of course, there are other ways to test with a multi-meter to back-probe the switch and check for the voltage. If you get the warnings in the dashboard, stop the car as soon as possible and fix the issue or those driving behind you may not realize you are braking...
your video is very good, please help me, I want to buy an error reader for 2000 w210 e240, nerus bsnj can you quote me a price, I am also passionate about w210 cars like you

For my Ml430 2000 modelI am getting ESP BAS Light tried to get code from Autozone but no code, what could be the reason?
Hi Sudha, drive at highway speed and turn on your cruise control. If it doesn't work, it may be a speed sensor. The stop switch could obviously be another...

ESP light still showing .My 2001 ML430 yaw sensor is faulty & getting the code C1120 I confirmed this by getting it cleared 2-3 times & post test that reappeared. On close inspection under the central console On the top side of “Yaw Rate Sensor” part# A163 542 2140 but when I see the marketplace & oem / genuine used sites there are 2 part numbers
1 on top like mine #A163 542 2140
2nd on the side a different number
can anyone help me which number to be used?
why does various listings have 2 different numbers?
Is it normal for a part to have 2 numbers on it ?
Hi @Sudha Edu , call any MB dealership's parts department, supply your VIN# and let them give you the exact part number

The problem in fues it’s moving
I can change the gear in the car..but the car won't physically go into gear.
Hello sir, my gearbox stuck into park position. Can it be reason for my problem? I have also lamb alert on my screen
Hello, when certain values fall outside of preprogrammed ranges, your car will go into limp mode to keep you and the car safe. Please scan the car for codes and don't change parts based on guesswork.
Essayez de mettre votre voiture avec la clé en position 2 sans démarrer. Restez plusieurs minutes le pied appuyé sur la pédale de frein.
La boite de vitesses devrait être réinitialisée.
P2402/p2403 not gear change
I do it by myself and replace the old one
Nice!
I have check engine on aswell will this switch take it away? When I turn my car off it says 4 malfunctions do you know if that’s tied to this?
I have a 2001 e320 sedan
I think it is best to scan and get the error codes, and to avoid guesswork.
