When I consider your perspective and the above two possibilities, I realised that trying to attribute motivations of any of the participants hearts based on how they choose to display their polite intentions one with another is not only an inevitible moving target impossible to nail down, but a total distraction from all that is relevant.

I remember in my 9th grade psychology class, the teacher talked about subliminal messaging. He played Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" backward, and it literally said. "Start to smoke marijuana" in the creepiest way. The teacher wasn't trying to teach us about Satanism, but I will never forget that creepy feeling of it all. (Not saying anything about the morality of using maryjane, but just the sneaky, creepy way of messaging).

    Alma 30: 17
17 And many more such things did he say unto them, telling them that there could be no atonement made for the sins of men, but every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature; therefore every man prospered according to his genius, and that every man conquered according to his strength; and whatsoever a man did was no crime.

He discusses various techniques used in the industry such as the backwards masking, as well as lyrics that glorify occult worship, immortality, etc. If I remember right he also touches on how evil spirits influence the ideation of pop and rock music and how it becomes wildly popular.

Rush was only seen as potentially satanic because of the pentagram they used on an early album called 2112. Their pentagram had one point on top rather than two pointing up like goat horns. Remember, Christians say we are Satanists because we have pentagrams on the Nauvoo temple and inverted stars on the Salt Lake Temple. The pentagram with Rush represented an oppressive government entity that took away artistic freedoms of the people in the story of a futuristic story based in the year 2112.
I have what some may call a weakness and some may call a strength; I'm very, very curious, always have been. As a young boy, around 6 or 7, our Halloween curfew was before sunset because of what was said to be satanic animal sacrifices. These animals were drained of their blood. So I was always curious about this. As I grew older I was big into Kiss and other hard rock bands. Later, and still, I'm into Rush. I think they are the best prog-rock band ever to exist. The first time I heard of Crowley was on one Ozzy Osborne's first albums. There was a song named "Mr. Crowley" that questioned what he was trying to do or achieve. Later I found his face on the cover of the Beatles album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Later I found out about Jimmy Page and Richie Blackmore (Rainbow, Deep Purple) were big Into Crowley and occult religiosity. I can't remember how it all went, but there was a point where Jimmy Page was writing incredible music, but then once he lost his connection with the darkness he relied on, he couldn't write music anymore, and still can't.
I also remember seminary teachers really going crazy on music and satanism when I was in High School in Idaho. I haven't done it yet, but I want to show one of my seminary teachers, who I'm still close to, pictures of the Nauvoo temple with the pentagrams on the temple, and compare it to the Rush 2112 album cover and ask him if Rush doing this is worse that the Church doing this. I did some research on religious symbols and the pentagrams, like the cross, has a historical sacred nature. Even the upside down cross that the Catholic Church has been called out on represents the crucifixion Peter. Tony Iomi of Black Sabbath uses cross inlays in his custom Gibson SG guitar, does that make him a proper Christian?
I've always thought that pop music is much worse than the hard rock/heavy metal I listened to; especially Rush.

Obviously late to the conversation, but THANK YOU DAN for calling out the far right, too, at 42:40!! I remember learning about the political spectrum in like sixth grade, seeing the definition and examples of totalitarianism on the far right and thinking, “that is Satan’s plan. That’s Hitler and fascism. Why would anyone ever align themselves with that ideology?”
Communism/socialism in their pure forms, where councils govern and every voice is heard and everyone helps their neighbor for the betterment of society, and are united in that belief, is totally more the way I believe God intends for things to be. That said, yes the practiced form of communism is just another form of a totalitarian dictatoriship, and is easily co-opted and corrupted by the adversary.
The devil lives in the extremes; truth is made manifest in the proving of contraries (as Joseph Smith often touted). In other words: STICK TO THE MIDDLE and watch out for zealotry in ANY form. And remember to love your neighbor, and that blanket bans and restrictions without honest/meaningful consideration for individual situations are usually not good ideas (I mean, compare the condemnation of and teachings against adultery in the Sermon on the Mount with how Jesus ministered to and counseled the woman taken in adultery. Quite different!!)
Space needs to be made for exceptions to most (all….?? idk) rules/laws. And also why judgments are often decided by juries who need to be unified in their decision. And why the US government is meant to have checks and balances of power across the three branches, with no one branch wholly greater in authority and power than another. This is also totally why we need ranked voting and not the stupid two-party tyranny.
And let’s check how quick we are to slap labels on any group with ideas contrary to ours, and therefore stifling any possibility of meaningful conversation/engendering a hostile environment for finding compromise (you guys have gotten better with this since this was posted, for which I thank and commend you 😊).

The book Demonic Foes is insightful for saints, very solid work on exorcism/possession and not full of itself nor too long for the topic. People with possession problems are pretty much exclusively people who have made promises/deals/covenants/oaths with evil spirits/Satan it seems.
Lords of the Left Hand Path is full of lies and should not be read by saints but it blatantly reveals the societies that sought to ascend without Jesus Christ. They all crashed and burned. There is no ascension/transcendence to anywhere positive without Christ right there between you and the Most High God on the His covenant path.

There were a couple of misconceptions in Satanic philosophy during this episode. There is a second part to the law of Thelema, the full law should be read as “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law, love is the law - love under will”. Also, followers of Thelema are not always satanists. There is a difference between satanism and Thelema though they have many similarities. As an exmormon and a satanist I’d be happy to answer questions if anyone has some.

@L Well it’s certainly both of the things you said. They kind of did hit this on the head in the podcast though that we use the name and the figure of Satan (who we don’t believe in) as a metaphor for independence, resistance and knowledge. There’s a certain element of humor involved in it though and most satanists were at one point ostracized from Christian religions, we were made to feel bad and evil, so there’s also an element of claiming that and playing the part of the opposition to the groups that hurt us.

When I was a teen, several parents in our branch (and other wards in the stake) bought into the Evangelical kool-aid, and drank deeply.
The second councilor in our Stake Presidency was (in a weird way) semi related to me as one of his daughters married one of my uncles (they later divorced).
As one of the ones being ostracized and bearing a lot of the blunt of that D&D Kool-aid, I developed a plan, and talked to a few of my friends in the stake about implementing it.
So we approached him one time (being prepared before hand right? Cause if ye are prepared ye shall not fear) at a Fab Friday (general activity night) with a pregenerated 1 shot, and our concerns that what was being said about D&D were inaccurate. We then offered to both walk him through a character creation session, the 1-shot adventure, and answer any questions he had about the game.
      After that?
He sent a message out to the bishops and branch presidents of the stake, letting them know that if their kids played D&D, to just let them, and if they had any concerns or questions, to contact him, and he would answer thier questions.
We never had any problems in our stake about D&D after that point.

The greatest love of all is to love yourself, not to love God, not to love others, but to love yourself. How do we truly find ourselves? By loving others, not by loving ourselves. Ultimately, by serving others, we become someone whom we can love, indeed. But that's not the message of the song. It was what was used for the processional at my daughter's kindergarten graduation in the mid1980s, at a Montessori school. Crazy!

Aleister Crowley also tried to take over the largest Rosicrucian organization in the world based in San Jose, called the "Rosicrucian Order, AMORC"
    H. Spencer Lewis, the founder of AMORC, found out what Crowley was trying to do, and banned him. That's a whole story in itself.
AMORC is the largest Rosicrucian Order, with an estimated 150,000 - 200,000 members. It's pretty much boiled itself down to a modern day self help organization. Members can attend Lodges, or set up home altars called "sanctums" where the necessary rituals are performed as you progress through the degrees.

I think the perfect way to cap off this conversation would have been a discussion about the goodness of the Truth. Jesus Christ has conquered death and hell, and following in his footsteps and accepting him as our master and advocate with the Father is the way to go :)

Try to figure out the meaning of the words to the song "Stairway to Heaven". McCarthy was right about Communism. Lynn Bryson from the group "The Sons of Mosiah" with Al Cherry, use to give firesides on satanic music and can still be viewed on RUclips. Al Cherry was the Kwaku El of the 1970's in the church.
