What fascinates me is that when Garry Marshall wrote the pilot episode he chose a past era -- the 50s -- which seemed like a completely different time and culture. But if a show was written today looking back by the same time frame, it would be about the years around 2009. No one would watch the show, as it would be no different than now.
My friend met Henry Winkler in a pharmacy in norfolk england a few years ago, He was an absolute legend a really nice down to earth man, Allowed him to take a selfie with him to which I was gutted, Had a tee shirt with the fonze when I was a child and would love to meet him.
He was recently in my city in Canada filming. He made a post saying he's enjoying his time here, like just being nice, you know. There were loads of comments suggesting things to do here...and over the next few days he posted pictures of himself checking out these spots. Class act!
He was in the show Better Late Than Never and always showed him happily giving autographs and interacting with fans while William Shatner tended to avoid the fans.
Fonzie was required to wear a BROWN leather jacket because the network felt wearing a black leather jacket would make him look like a motorcycle gang member.
Both the shark and Mork were OTT plots. Although I’m sure it happened before, Happy Days is the first series that comes to mind when I think about a series where a popular character was elevated to the point that he became an eye-roll caricature
A bit of trivia about American Graffiti that was mentioned in this segment. The license plate on John Milner's car was THX-138, IN an honorary homage to the 1971 sci-fi movie THX. 1138, both movies were directed by George Lucas. THX 1138 was also used in the first STAR WARS movie, whan Han & Luke were "escorting" Chewbacca to the detention center, when the Death Star guard asked them what his number was, Han, dressed as a Stormtrooper replies "YHX 1138"
Chuck Cunningham was actually mentioned in two different episodes in which Fonzie had recalled to two different characters(Arnold in season 3 and Al in season 4)on how he planned to spend Christmas alone and had wound up spending Christmas with the Cunningham family!!!📺📺📺📺📺
On the 30th anniversary show Remembering Happy Days Gary Marshall was asked what happened to "Chuck". And he said that he had been awarded a basketball scholarship at the University of Outer Mongolia
The running joke about Chuck was did Chuck ever come back downstairs? Because the last we see of him is he's going up the stairs and never appeared on the show again
For the last show they should have had the original actor for Chuck make a cameo appearance. Chuck could ask why no one visited him at college or something like that.
Following the line of familiar names to Garry Marshall……Fonzie was scheduled to be named “Mash” (Marshall’s high school nickname) but that was nixed for fear that it would promote the TV series M*A*S*H, which ran on a rival network
The show lasted for six more seasons after the jumping the shark episode, even though it lost a few spots in the ratings starting in season 7. Normal for any long-running series.
Watch the shows again with an open mind, and contrast them with the last two seasons when Richie and Ralph were still on. When Ron Howard left, the show was forced to go in a new direction and it finally brought an end to some of the really dumb writing that required Richie and the Gang to be rescued either literally or metaphorically by Fonzie. The episode, for example, where Fonzie helps Potsie stand up to his professor by learning through singing would be one thing if Potsie were in sixth grade. As a grown man, how demeaning can you get? One Ron Howard left, the focus had to change and they needed to work with what they had. I'd argue this was the most successful show to handle a major departure and still do well in the ratings. It ran four more years after Ron Howard and Don Most left. From a story standpoint, to have Fonzie who was clearly older being a mentor for Chachi and Joanie, it made more sense and didn't seem to diminish them as much as it did Richie. Also, when Roger was written onto the show, Fonzie and he talked to each other as peers. There was always a sort of uneven hierarchy between Richie and Fonzie, depending on the circumstances of the story as to who had the higher role in the relationship. I also think the season without Joanie and Chachi is the most interesting because Fonzie really grew up in his stable relationship with Ashley. They should have moved heaven and earth to keep Linda Purl for the following season because they could have taken the characters to an even more naturally mature level. And Howard and Marion were good as Fonzie's mentors during the post-Ron Howard era as well.
The Show was Greatly based on 50s Fun & Pranks but Became too Domesticated So much Fun took place at Arnolds and Als but interest was Lost around the Home Lives when it took a More Serious approach!!
The first 2 seasons of the show were fun & charming but after it essentially became "The Fonzie show" it became increasingly unwatchable... It actually hit the skids long before it 'jumped the shark."
Great Video. I used to love this show.

How true haha
Love Happy Days. It's a classic series, enjoyed watching it when was a kid growing up.
Same here!

He seems like a genuine, kind person
He was in the show Better Late Than Never and always showed him happily giving autographs and interacting with fans while William Shatner tended to avoid the fans.
I often go to check my look in the mirror - then I pull a Fonz and just go ‘ayyyyyy’
ayyyy mundo!
I thought it was just me...
Being Canadian and all.
I@@CraftAeroI thought that would be aaaayyyy?
@@brian56 I thought it would be Ehhhhhh
@@machupikachu1085 it is, but we're talking about The Fonz!

He wore a taupe coloured jacket at one stage, ridiculous.
But WAS it really BROWN
What a wonderful show and I loved it as a kid.
Happy New Year 2 Ya, Rocky Watches Movies. You're an all-star, keep up the good work.
Happy new year to you too

Oh yes one of the shows I liked in my 20's!

Winkler as Butchie Weinstein on The Lords of Flatbush sorta helped a weeee bit. 😂👍
Happy Days was one of best sitcoms of the 1970s. The Fonz was my fave character, of course. 😀
Erin Moran was so lovely and she died so young. Tragedy.
Love the channel - can you do a video on The Waltons?
Happy days, happy times.
I saw 255 shows! First seven years were great!
They should of kept Rock Around the Clock as the theme song.
True it was the best option
On the 30th anniversary show Remembering Happy Days Gary Marshall was asked what happened to "Chuck". And he said that he had been awarded a basketball scholarship at the University of Outer Mongolia
I read Ron Howard's "The Boys" and Henry Winkler's book "The Fonz and Beyond"
I read it actually went higher in the ratings after "jumping the shark" for at least 3 more years, then it began to slide
The running joke about Chuck was did Chuck ever come back downstairs?

For the last show they should have had the original actor for Chuck make a cameo appearance. Chuck could ask why no one visited him at college or something like that.
They couldn't do that . . . He was stuck on an island with only his friend Wilson for company.
I Liked the Episode About the Funky Drummer / the Black Guy' in the 1950s USA.

It went to shit when Richie and Ralph left the show.

Erin Moran was so pretty!
Mickey Dolenz would have been cool! But Winkler is iconic Woo Hoo
In the intro I thought you were going to use the JUMPING THE SHARK phrase.😊
Thinking about it, it could have been a better option
Uh. did I mention that I saw 30th anniversary of Happy Days first time in 2005 and another reunion show months later but, it first aired in 1992.
Henry and Marian were having a fling whilst they were filming
I was waiting for that to be mentioned.
#21 - Henry Winkler couldn't actually ride a motorcycle. They would push him and he would roll up on it.
Why does nobody ever talk his role in The Lords of Flatbush?
These facts are correctamundo.
kudos to Ronny Howard
65k is ridiculous

Can someone please tell me why Fonzie switched from a white tee shirt to black and then back to white
They were in the laundry
Heyyy!!

Rocky instructed Fonzie on how to jump the shark 🦈😎

Sorry, can't deal with the accent.
Couldn’t stand the Mork episodes. Stopped watching at that time. 🤷🏼♀️
I’m sick of boomer nostalgia
Ever thought you might be on the wrong channel?
Then don’t watch it, get a job and start paying for my pension….
