    This is one of the most exciting videos I've ever watched! Abronias are by far, my favorite lizards! I love reptiles and saw a huge display tank with 3 or 4 abronias at the huston zoo, and immediately fell in love! I can't get over how stunning they are! I really hope they become more readily available in the future! Congrats on successfully producing your first mini alligators! Lol

    I cannot get over how excited I am that you had success 😳 I had a few of them a few years back that I fostered for a friend while they were away for a year and I fell in love. I’ve been up late at night like a zombie finding myself having the fever wanting to get a few pairs for myself.
    This video finally did it . 🤗 I’m going for it .

      I’m going to keep them and potentially do bloodline swaps with others who have bred them successfully 🙂

  • @AmandaPaige71

    Please forgive my ignorance bc I'm new to the reptile hobby and I'm wondering if they can reproduce with their off spring or siblings? Or does that cause issues?

    • @MaddieSmith
      @MaddieSmith 2 года назад +3

      They definitely can, but it is not recommended to directly inbreed unless you are working with some of the last of the species in order to save them, or trying to prove out a trait/potential morph. Other than that, there are not many reasons why one would need to breed parents to offspring or offspring to each other.

  • @kenjiro2676
    @kenjiro2676 2 года назад +1

    1:39, also genetic diversity. That is very important, crested geckos need it, they are very inbred and the founding captive population was very small to begin with.

    • @MaddieSmith
      @MaddieSmith 2 года назад +4

      The awesome thing about crested geckos and many crested gecko breeders is the diligence in lineage tracking. We have several of our geckos that we can trace back 4 generations, nearly to the very first geckos that were brought over from New Caledonia! With diligent lineage tracking, we can avoid breeding animals that are from closely related lines as much as possible. Thankfully there hasn’t been too many genetic issues that have popped up as a result of small gene pool besides the polydactyl trait and lilly white neurological issue (when incubated too hot, it seems. Potentially not a result of small gene pool)
      I haven’t seen many other animal species where breeders track or care so much about the lineage of them. It really sets crested geckos apart, and it’s part of the reason I love working with them so much.

    • @kenjiro2676
      @kenjiro2676 2 года назад +2

      @@MaddieSmith I see this a lot in crested gecko groups. Even with a small founding population, the geckos remain is superb health. The breeders of the crested gecko community are more sane and intelligent when it comes to breeding(compared to lots of fish and animal breeders 🤷‍♂️). They even spite those that are just breeding low quality animals for breeding, which is nice since the community is regulating their own breeding ethics to improve the hobby.

    Is a reptile litter a “clutch?”

    • @tylerrugge
      @tylerrugge  2 года назад

      A clutch would be correct when referring to eggs. But I think if it’s live birth it’s a litter technically 😆

But your voice has seriously gotten deeper. I'm not used to that LOL. Plus you're growing a little bit of facial hair. It looks good.

    If you are going to breed, study genetics, and how to use pedigrees and then come to RUclips, you are just pet owner not a breeder.

    • @tylerrugge
      @tylerrugge  2 года назад +4

      There is no way to have a pedigree on an endangered wild caught animal ??? We have extensive lineage that goes back several generations on most of our crested gecko breeders though 🙂
