LOL at all these people.. He's giving you more than just a how-to. Thisi is you all have a better understanding of the sharpening technique and the angle when sharpening. I learn a lot. Thanks for the video!
Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night ruclips.net/user/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.
To create a seven-minute video on how to sharpen a pair of scissors without actually demonstrating how to sharpen a pair of scissors is quite an achievement.
@@nestingstarling5895 to all those who think he didn't demonstrate how to sharpen the scissors. He showed you how in two separate ways. Why can't you see this. Hmmmm not sure but I know what to do now.
Thank you so much for this. My favorite pair of scissors got really dull and because of your video I was able to sharpen them. I'm very grateful to you.
Thank you SO MUCH for the way you took the trouble to show what you're talking about UP CLOSE! I've been watching every freaking scissor sharpening video, and read non-video instructions, but---okay, call me dumb!--I was not grasping the exact mechanism of it til this video. It has been really annoying that I had this mental block I guess! But this was the perfect way to explain it and I'm very grateful to you, I just had to tell you....thanks again!
To put it simple, he talk about "how right angle can help you sharpening scissor faster". he said you can unscrew the scissor and sharpen it like regular blade or if you can't then you can sharpen it with road stone or other sharpening tools
The back side of the blades are cut concave. It shows when the light crosses the back side of the blade. Scissors can be ruined by cutting the back side. If the blades are very dull, get them sharpened professionally.
Cmmon folks, use your imagination. He explains things in good detail. Do you really need to see him do a full sharpening for you to wrap your straining brains around it? He showed you how to put the blade to turn stone, now it's your turn.
You are going at it the hard way. Just get yourself some sandpaper 50 grit (coarse grit paper for rough sanding) then some 100 grit (fine grit paper for fine sanding). You rake the 50 grit and fold it in half. coarse side facing outward. You cut the sandpaper several times all the way across and wipe down the blades with a clean soft towel. Then you take the 100 grip paper and fold it the same way. Cut just as many times as the 50 grit. Then wipe the blades with a clean soft towel and do it all over again. Your scissors will be razor sharp.
I found this video extremely helpful, because I know how to sharpen knives. Maybe a better title would be “how to sharpen scissors like a knife”. Either way, thanks for the excellent explanation!
My mother was born in 1922. They never had these fancy gadgets then. Mom showed me that in order to sharpen scissors all you needed to do was to cut a few lengths off of sandpaper. Not sure what grade she used, but I know it sure worked. Still use that today.
I dont want to undermine your point, but at the very least, hockey skate blades are ground in a concave upside down u, obviously not as extreme though, I'm not quite an engineer, but I believe it has something to do with channeling melting ice (water) through to increase speed and improve bite
You can't simply put the inside of the blade flat on a stone to grind it as scissor blades have a bow to it. Unlike haircutting shears which are thin enough you can bend it flat against the hone and it springs back, with regular scissors you will just end up grinding the up at tip and near the pivot, leaving the middle unground. You have to hone along the blade at a 90 degree to the edge of you stone. You don't have to follow the factory angle. If you want more performance out of your scissors, you can make the angle more acute. It is a trade off between durability with tougher materials vs cutting performance.
Thank you for posting this! I had previously tried to sharpen my scissors with a whetstone just like a knife, and didn't realize I needed to follow the angle on the blade rather than sharpen to a point. Now the scissors are cutting very badly because I changed the angle of the cutting surface. Your video shows me what I need to do to fix my scissors! Great explanation!
Thank you for taking the time to explain with thorough visuals. I absolutely LOVE videos like these, that not only explain “how to” but also “why” we need to do specific things! After watching, I now feel confident to sharpen my scissors and make my little hobbyist life much easier.
If you touch the flat side then that scissors is not scissors anymore. The two parts are grinded together with their flat sides. Any modification on them will kill the scissors. At least as I know.
You'll never see more rude comments full of sharpening snobbery than on a video about sharpening scissors. You did good; I think what you were trying to explain was that scissors are usually only BEVELED on one side of each of the blades, like a true hatchet's blade is. I'm going to start on restoring a pair of scissors that belonged to my grandmother today; I'll get around to sharpening them soon, but today I'll be sanding rust off of the blades. They are a good pair made by Case, so I want to get them back into fine shape.
@@Mygraciously Look at your scissors, and you'll see that one side of each blade is flat and the other side has a bevel on it. What you sharpen is the beveled area. He was right, it is easier to see and understand if you take the screw out and separate the two halves of the scissors. Just be careful, when I took the scissors that were my Grandmother's apart, I found that the screw that held them together had a small washer around it that is necessary for them to function properly, and had to take care not to lose that. Also when putting the scissors back together, do not overtighten that screw, otherwise, you can get the scissors so tight they will not move to cut. I had to loosen off the screw somewhat after I put mine back together so they could be used to cut.
There is an old trick my pop taught me. Use the Spark/Flint Wheel of your BIC lighter and run it along your dull blade a couple of times. It is a fast fix and keeps the works going till you can do a proper grind on your tools :D

That's what most of us are looking for. And yeah, that angle you casually toss off as not important, that's the main starting point for the rest of us with old beat up scissors.

yay fixed it and I didn't even need to sharpen them. I have Fine crafting/quilting scissors that couldn't cut yarn very well. So I came looking for a sharpening video. When you said to take them apart I grabbed my tool kit and promptly screwed the screw in more and tested them on the yarn and it cut like butter. I had been running my fingers up and down the blades thinking they didn't feel damaged. So thank you for saving me some time and now I know how to fix the other pair if I ever get around to it.

Fail. My old scissors(metal/black handles) don’t come apart.. Have ruined bc of angles I can’t make on whet stone. I have six pair from my grandmother, a seamstress, and I’m devastated.
Great video. I am watching because it costs way to much to have my sewing scissors sharpened every few months or even weeks if I am cutting fabric that really dulls the blades quickly. Lol If you think the most expensive scissors out there are at the most $30, then you have never purchased a decent pair of sewing scissors which are going to easily cost several hundred.
Here's a dumb question from a beginner : how much time does it take to sharpen one blade of the scissors? Should I be sharpening for like 30 seconds or 5 full minutes? Thank you
My question always is how to get rid of the burr. You definitely can't do it like on a knife. The video was pretty useless without demonstrating the process and the result(!)!
If you're going to bother sharpening scissors invest in an all metal pair. Honestly most scissors will break at the handle before you would have to sharpen them. Once that handle breaks you're never going to make a reliable repair.
Question how do you sharpen a broken scissor since these scissor are broken due to the fact that my friends were playing scissor darts with them and now their like a pair of knives?
