I respect anyone who tells their fish they mean them no harm. Wish more people would respect those big beautiful bass like that.
How does that help with your hook stuck in the fishes mouth though? A mean if your fishing your fishing!
Anyone else yell out loud when John posts another video! Just love them. Thanks for sharing and showing with everyone John!
Mr Skinner, I grew up on the North Fork surfcasting and whenever I see your videos it warms my heart.
I just got to my North Fork home an hour ago in advance of a show in Jersey this weekend. I went straight to the bluff. It is definitely special.
Mrs. Skinner I have to admit that you're RUclips videos have been the best thing that ever happened to me with fishing I have followed your instructions and I've caught the most fish I have ever caught in my life I have caught over 30 stripers this year and three false albacore from the beach following your videos and listening to your instructions. You have the most destructive videos with the best information that I've ever seen and I will gladly support you from now on
What I like the most about the new gopro is that we all now know even John Skinner talks to himself while fishing
And he talks to the fish.
Well that's the most important part.
Better company and conversation than most people. Nice video, thank you for doing your thing.
I'm on board with that. Third bass I ever landed I was already a life coach. Reminds me what my own goals are too while jazzed up. Bass 1 was seriously grizzled. Striper as played by Robert Duvall.
John Skinner is a example of catch and release, I just started a kayak fishing youtube channel and the way John Skinner fishes is what I dream to replicate
yeah i release all bass and the larger fluke but i do keep 2 fluke when i go fluke fishing
Striper time!💯💪👊LETS GO!!! Keep up the greatness!!! Really enjoy watchin the best at it!!!
They were beautiful fish. I love those early morning sounds and smells when fishing .
Then SLAM, and the adrenaline dump as a beautiful specimen hammers the lure.
Beautiful fish John. Thanks so much for the helpful videos.
Glad to see people releasing a good fish like that, i got a nice pair of fish a 23lb and a 28lb today released both.
Awesome John, gotta love the north shore. People diss it way too much but I prefer it
Such an amazing fish! Nice Work!
Great choice on braid I’ve always used the same Walmart spider wire stealth
Looks very peaceful out there wow
I see you live on the north fork I love the release I only Keep one or 2 smaller bass a year now the big ones are just for fun
save a few for me
Just watching this video made me excited because I’ll be out there this weekend I’m hoping to find some fish up by rocky point
John!!!! Long Island Legend!
Congratulations on the rod line John! Now convince Josh to ship those damn blanks because I need one sent to Cape Cod please!
they cost $250 to ship i tried
Ronnie Archer are they being sent via Blackhawk helicopter and parachuted onto my deck within 10 minutes of purchase? What the hell is $250 in shipping charges lolll
Why do you need that 9’2 you already have the ODM jigster
Brendan Woerner lmao this was 2 years ago. And I fish the surf/beaches way more than the canal. Can’t use the jigster for everything as awesome as it is
Enjoying the rod, picked it up at end of august. unfortunately only small bass for me so far. just put a tsunami 5000 shield on it. hoping this week will go a little better
really good plug for the price!!
I usually crush the barbs or cut 1/3 of the treble off - just makes for more successful catch & release. Great video.
Do you think removing the split ring on the front changes the action any??
And I bought the ‘Skinner’ rod at J&H and love it!! Waiting for that one good one to really test it out!
You could put the spinfisher bailless on the slammer check out mystic
On the 5in should I do a 2/0 for the belly 3/0 for the back
I wish more fisherman had no intention of harming the fish they catch. GIANT BASS John!
Beautiful fish
Thank you for your help because I am going fishing tomorrow
Hey John. Thanks for the videos. How do I remove that rear j hook. Its not on a split ring. Did you use some type of cutter?
..The big splash at the very end of video sounds great!
..And it felt like that 'slob' was right in front of me. Wishful thinking, of course!
..
Mr.Skinner, which knots do you use for the clip and swivels?
Great Job with the catch & release. The stocks are definitely showing a decline. Hope the warm water keeps the albies around for a few more videos.
Incoming or outgoing? Thanks (i have had better luck on incoming water this fall on north shore
Who is the one jerk who doesn't like this video?
steven G a jealous sob who hates there life
He swapped out a single rear siwash hook to a treble which is totally unnecessary for striped bass. Try giving the fish more of a chance, or haven't you caught enough yet. A single treble is plenty to hook a fish and eliminates the damage the 2nd treble causes. Just because you release it doesn't mean it survived. Yeah, I also did not like the video.
hahaha, thanks for the nature lesson ranger rick. we all know that already jerk off.
Yes the horror of the treble hook. Instant death for sure. Sarcasm aside, I'd say the two biggest contributing factors to the unintentional death of bass intended for release is 1) drag inappropriately set too loose and/or inexperience fighting large fish resulting in an overplayed fish that cannot be revived and 2) removed from the water for too long to get a weight/photo shoot
The man in the vid above knew his tackle, knew his water, and knew how to fight fish and landed two sizable bass in a minute and forty seconds which undoubtedly contributed to a successful release.
Secondly, he kept both in the water and didn't bother putzing around a with a boga or a camera. He simply removed the plug and revived them.
I realize that treble hooks draw the ire of social media "release the breederz" conservationists and internet experts, but in reality, I think much of the hype is overblown (particularly in regards to fish of this size, schoolies and trebles are arguably a different scenario). But due to the reasons stated, to say this video is contrary to ethical angling and conservation because of a treble hook swap is silly.
Good video John good size strippers thank you for all your videos & thank you for keeping Them clean, to where our kids can see them, as you share your knowledge
How did you even remove that back single hook? Trying to bend out the line tie....
Pretty cavalier attitude about those hooks. I was waiting for him to take a hook in the hand. Nice fish and good realease though.
Thank you Sr.
That is the way to properly revive a fish, not pushimg it back and forth.Great video keep making those videos.
I do like being able to hear what you saying and thinking in the new videos when you not speaking about doing your think
John, what's that top you're wearing?
Beautiful fish! I too have seen a very noticeable decline in stripers over the past few years along the south shore, it's a real shame. I wish more people catch and properly release. I get so upset seeing some jetty jumping weekend warrior pull in a 25lb-30lb fish slam her across the rocks and toss em in a cooler & toss their clam belly rig back out. These people have no idea on the fish life cycle and the impact a fish that size has on bass populations. Anyway, great videos, I'm a big fan and thanks for sharing.
Hi. What distance do u cast that lure? Nice video
How do you know the structure all the way out there?
Excellent
Whats that noise when you reel down?
good vid good info!
Hey John. Don't you ever pause your retrieve?
Great video, was this high tide?
Love it
Hey John I noticed on the tsunami talking poppers they have this split ring on it o noticed it gets tangled a lot should I take it off
I take it off.
Another beautiful video John, I get so darn excited every time I watch you. Can I ask why you opted for the old school large guide setup on your rod line, and not something more modern? Very curious.
It has the desired action. Also, less complication banging around in the rocks in the middle of the night. Also, I've done casting comparisons of that layout vs NGC, and there was no distance advantage to going to a lot of little guides. I do have NGC layout on one of my 11-footers.
Thank you Sir
Class act...
Big thumbs up.
nice fish my bro in law got skunked yesterday.
Super kool video. I would get some of those lures. I just sub.
Why the 6500? Ive been fishing Albies next to you all week with a 4500 and I have the 5500 on my 10 ft 6 rod. I think either of those reels can handle anything we get on the north fork. Just curious because the 6500 weighs a lot .
In the nearly 20 years of using that outfit, I've landed over two dozen 40-pound+ fish on it. They were mostly in rocky areas where I really needed control. I just feel I can exert that control a lot better with the slightly larger reel. Also, I really need the casting distance in the spot this was recorded, and I get added distance. Yes, a 5500 would be a nice match for the rod, and that rod has been locked on top of my truck most of the time recently while I work the beaches with a 4000 on a 7.5-footer.
Steohen Husak i been fishing there too last few weeks. Landed record amount of albies out there. Got some monster blues & small bass too. Heard some guys hooked up w/ big bass. Couple beauties john got. Great spot to fish.
Hey john was this early morning?
great video.. cast looked like it went 200 yrds :O
Hi John,
Where do you get your 6X treble hooks and split rings from? I can't find them. Thanks!
lureparts dot com
Bob Wright tackledirect
John, Why did you decide to fish the poppers instead of a bucktail in this situation?
Distance
I wonder sometimes, what happens to a big striper that you hook hard, then they take off and break the line on some rocks? Ive landed big fish where I could barely get the treble out because its hooked through the bony part of their mouth/lips. So when that poor fish swims off with a large plug stuck to its face and 20 yards of braid behind that, I'm pretty sure its a death sentence. What do you think? Once a guy told me, "oh the hook just rusts out and falls off and they will be fine." Yeah ok?!?!?!
Bony part of the mouth? I think the fish does OK. I say that because I once caught a 35-pounder with a large chunk hook in its throat, and it still hit a lure. Also, I've rarely found a fishing lure either diving or on the shore that still had good hooks on it. I also have quite a box of rusty hooks that I took from plugs in my surf bag. If I'm not careful to freshwater wash the lures, these hooks (VMC) rust.
How long till the lamiskinner is back in stock I was tryn to buy one
J&H isn't the only place that carries it. Try whatever other good local shop you have nearby that carries Lamiglas.
Wow a Penn Slam 6500 on a 9' rod? not just any 9' I know. I'd like to buy one of your rods next summer. right now
I've got the new 6500 Penn Slam on order now. i was planning to pair it up with the new ODM DNA 11' for fishing the surf. would you recommend that combo?
really nice fish in this one John, thanks for sharing. great tips. I really enjoy watching and learning how to zero in on the big fish using your techniques.
I would put a 7500 on an 11-footer . I prefer the 6500 on my 9 and 10-footers, though you could certainly use a 5500 on the 9', and many anglers would make that choice. I go slightly larger because I'm often targeting large fish around rocks.
John Skinner Fishing sounds good I'm just learning what works best together. I'll go with a shorter rod for this 6500 then thanks John👍🏼
why would you design a rod with 5 guides ?
Im going to buy ur book im from long island too. I would like to know what type of line u used when u fish plugs? type and pounds. Thanks
See the link in the video description - 30# green spiderwire stealth
John Skinner Fishing thank you sir
John Skinner Fishing it is braid moss?
John Skinner Fishing mr skinner just bought ur custom rod at J&H also the clips and spool my reel there whit some spider wire 30 line. Im ready for the stripers
I laugh every time a person ask what location did you catch it
ikr
He quite obviously caught them in the mouth
What is the best way to tie your Line to the plug John?
Palomar or clinch knot
Thank You John for the Input!!!! I Love Your videos I am going to use some of your tips down in Cedar Key Fl
How good do you think the actual run will be? I've had some REALLY good days (as in 20+ nice fish per trip) in the last month and then a lot of days with just a handful of schoolies. The point being that the action has been relatively consistent with some bad hiccups sprinkled in the last couple of weeks in specific, and I'm inclined to believe that it's got something to do with there being fish around, but not in abundance as you said. This of course worries me, but with all the talk about the fall run and how the fishing is going to "explode," I just wanted hear what you had to say about it particularly after hearing your sentiment on the populations.
We'll probably do fine on smalls. I don't have high hopes for decent numbers of fish over 15 pounds.
John Skinner Fishing do you think they'll be mostly concentrated on the South Fork? Or that there simply aren't many? Cape Cod seems to have been doing nicely with size I've heard, so this is the basis of my curiosity
I expect both shores to have fish.
Hi John, I would like to ask how you know when to throw a shiny lure like a deadly dick compared to a popper or plug? Is there a certain time of year or is it trial and error.
Nice nice
John, dumb question for you, are you planting the rod butt in your belly to create that rod action, or is it hanging free? Thanks
Between the legs.
For my comfort and feel of leverage between the legs rod pressed against right inner thigh
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks John. Planning the buy a Lamiglas Skinner tomorrow at the Saltwater's Edge.
@@shortyetm3190 Thanks!
Actually bought it today, they had a one piece!
What kind of clip is that you use for your lures ?
Christopher Ortega Just look at the description of the Video
MrMedellinusa1 thank you sorry I for got about that!
Why such a big reel on a 9ft? I fish a 5500 slammer 3 on my 11ft airwave elite
Efface 6500 big?
any discount code for j&h shop? hahah
And do you have a snapchat with any fishing updates or tips?
Hi John from Australia are they an edible fish
Very. Pretty pricey too.
I need a rod for my boat, that I can present these lures as I would with a surf rod. Obviusly need a shorter rod.
Gary Gross I know it’s a year later but if you’re looking for a rod like that try a 7 foot medium heavy
we need to restore the population of these bass 😥 sad to hear its not like its used to be.
30 lb pound braid?
yes
Sad that there are less and less fish in our waters. It disgusts me that people can keep awesome fish like these. The bass over by me are somewhat plentiful still but this fall has been slow probably due to the warmth but it's still concerning.
And congrats on becoming a professional athlete at a ahem... ahem.... More experienced age. Have you reflected on this yet? Pretty cool Mr. Skinner.
Where are you from fishing 🎣?
LI, NY
🌺🤝👍🌹
Hey do you have a face book page
Doesn't it eat you up when you release those fish and think that some guy (or gal) is going to pull it off the Jersey Shore in a few weeks and keep it? If everyone in Cape Cod who could afford to buy their fish at a supermarket would release those fish back.into the Ditch then maybe a few more people could catch them on L.I. And then again in Jersey... Chesapeake... Etc. But I suppose it doesn't pay to stress it. What's the alternative? Keeping it yourself out of spite? Not me. Never a healthy Bass kept.
we aren't all scumbags on the jersey shore , I always cut the big bass go unless its messed up, but there is a lot of morons around here that will keep everything
Saltwater Angler Was just using Jersey as a geographical point south in the fall migration. Nothing personal at all. I could have just as easily said Staten Island or Queens. BTW last December one of my best days ever fishing the Jersey shore! Good times.
its all good , yes the striper run was very good here last fall
what about NY? when is the best bite like November 1?
David Weglarz Last 3 years, South Shore Western L.I. - Mid to late November. Climate change.
People seriously need to learn about catch and release
Ballsy unhooking that bass without grips or pliers. I never trust a bass with trebles anymore!
Shit yeah
After the first fish boiled and missed , when do you decide to make a change and throw a different size ?
It's disheartening to hear your opinion about the bass population. Awesome release and thanks for raising my fishing IQ.
Great question. I'm fully convinced we're dealing with the same fish here. When it boiled the first time, it was a pretty aggressive blowup, so it seemed interested. If was just a mild boil I would have thrown another color. Another size wasn't an option because of the distance needed to reach the fish.
B
Why u let it go?
Thomas Mathieu some people would like to see more fish in the future. Myself included.
that fish is a female, a breeder , I read that any striper over 33 inches is a female I had a 40 inch 25 pounder last fall and I could not get the fish revived after trying for a while and getting beat up by the waves I had no intentions of keeping that fish but I could not get it going so I took it home and when I cut it opened it was packed with eggs it killed me to take that fish home those big ones should be released obviously unless something like that happens
How can you tell if it’s a female?
First
If u keep one that's okay
Very nice John where is that beach exactly......
Not a fan of the talkin poppers personally
Have you tried the 5 and 6-inch models? I'm not a fan of the 7-inch.
