I know there’s a lot of controversy going on right now, but I want to give some feedback on the microphone testing - For the polar pattern, that’s not usually how those are graphed. As a professional audio engineer I found it difficult to understand, so I can see this being very confusing to the average consumer. I suggest using the type of graphs / visuals pro audio manufacturers ship with their microphones. Those are pretty easy to understand even at a glance.

As an experienced audio engineer I was disappointed with the complete lack of mentioning the distortion. While I do agree with the conclusion, it's a great mic for the price, you massively undervalued the RE20 or the MKH50 here. They sound way cleaner and more precise.
I am aware the problem on the FiFine this is likely the preamp or ADC rather than the mic itself, but since it's integrated in the mic it's still part of it.

    • @andrew6978
      @andrew6978 Год назад +35

I would wager he's just clipping something later on. It's hard to make a mic capsule distort in front of guitar amps if you set the gain properly, let alone speaking volume. He could be clipping the internal DAC but that is even more worrisome when he can't even get the gain right to avoid clipping. Bottom line, this is almost 100% user error.

For your polar pattern testing, please use a directivity graph for better representation. You can do this by rotating the mic around a fixed point, then loading the data into VituixCAD and exporting a normalized directivity graph, including contour lines. As a longtime viewer, I respect Linus and LMG a lot, as well as what they're trying to accomplish. Gamers Nexus notwithstanding, however, I've personally noticed an uneasy amount of discrepancies, corrections, and marks of rushed content throughout recent videos. As LMG grows into the technical reviewing and data collection side of things with Labs, I really do think it's important that a little extra time is taken to ensure presented information is accurate. I understand the financial reasons for releasing videos fast, but if doing so harms the legitimacy of every piece of content on the channels, it just isn't right.
For all it's worth, I work in video production (TV/streaming broadcast at the moment) and know from experience that rushing content just leads to unsatisfied employees and a needlessly stunted final product. I'm saying this out of love for the channel as I grew up watching Linus, Luke, and the overall channel grow. The following what I have to say is not out of hate but for concern and overall love as a long time fan. Before Steve's video came out, I too have noticed the amount of errors, inconsistencies, later corrections that take place, and the fact that there isn't a lot of accountability being shown really concerns me. The employees, many of which us fans respect and admire with their vast knowledge and charisma, even said that it's "quantity over quality" when it comes to the videos. If memory serves me right, back in the old LTT days, there was a time when videos weren't uploaded daily but rather I think 3-5 times per week, and the quality of the videos showed tremendously! Even back then if something was wrong, the team took accountability. But now it's seems there's been a shift. Even watching this video, there's plenty of things such as high pass filter being on or not. I know this channel isn't a mic/audio review channel, but a good example of someone who thoroughly reviews microphones and audio gear is Podcastage, who tests the equipment through various scenarios like voice, instruments, the polaroid pattern, proximity effect, etc. showing the piece of equipment's full capabilities through real case usage including people who will use it at their computer desks and visual and good representative graphs.
Now, I doubt Linus will see this, but this next part is directly to you. I'm not entirely sure what you might be thinking right now with Steve's video coming up, as well as seeing the comments from this video alone, but the voices who're telling you these things like something needs to change, "we want better quality videos", "take better accountability", etc., aren't coming out of place of hate, but concern and I would even say love. The community loves the channel, loves what you've created, what the company will become later with labs and other projects you probably have stored in the pipeline we don't even know about yet, but please take what we're saying, as fans who love this channel, into consideration. Listen to the criticism, take accountability where it's needed, and just overall strive to do better. We all want to see you succeed and continue to grow.

But LG was giving him tons of money and even appeared in their commercials. Then if you notice he almost dumps on companies to get them to pay him to shut up pretty much. He recently even dumped on iFixit in a video about his sponsors when they stopped sponsoring him because he started promoting his crazy expensive screw driver over there's while still taking their money. LMG has never been trustworthy. it was a matter of time before people noticed hes running an AD company now.

Was so excited for labs and to see what amazing things could come out of it, but I was shocked and saddened to see the inaccuracies you’ve been pushing. I totally acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes, but the brazen lack of accountability and the crunch culture emphasised on previous videos is shocking. As someone who has experienced such a culture in a startup it’s saddening to see a company which portrays itself as being a beacon of good business practices and trust having such an issue. I love the videos and hope that the whole team can learn from this and have some introspection on what led them to this point.

Unfortunately, Labs has a PR problem. Right now, Labs is just a team, the vision for Labs has not been achieved, and we are nowhere near that (1-2 yrs away, minimum). Labs (the vision of Labs Linus has) does not exist, and the testing they do today is not far off from what LMG has been doing for the past 10 years, in fast in may be suffering because they are testing new methodologies for testing, and using new equipment. Labs will take quite some time to mature into an organization that LMG is trying to build with it, now it is just a well funded startup trying to put itself together.

Linus will not comment on the subjects criticized by GN because he does not know how to approach the situation, that's why we had the fiasco with the backpack and the "trust me bro" scandal, but also other problems along the way.
I love both Linus and the team - as well as Steve and his team at GN. But he needs to understand that some things can't just be thrown under the rug as if it were "a simple mistake" or "poor communication". What are we talking about here? It's crazy that it was Steve from GN who had the guts to tell it like it is. Not packed up nicely by LMG editors, seriously. @TheDuelist Год назад +2

I remember him talking about the abrupt cuts to sponsor on the WAN show a couple years ago. It's so that the viewer never feels that the video is about to end. So it's all for viewer retention throughout the video. When YT recommends videos, it usually does it on a couple things, likes and views are some of them, but another huge one is how many viewers stayed through the whole video.
A lot of people may not know this, and it was a shock to me until I started making videos myself, but I can see how many people leave one of my videos within the first 10 seconds and it's usually about 50%. LTT might have different numbers, but if I get a few thousand views on a video, 1,500 of those views left in the first 10 seconds. So keeping the viewer retention graph as high for as long as possible is a big player in YT recommending your videos to other people.

"Make less videos, easy!" .... That's not how companies like LTT work, they plan things based on revenue projections. Do I think quality is suffering as a result of the fast pace? Of course
Do I wish they produced less content at higher quality? Yes
Would I support LMG's downsizing (20-40%) to achieve that goal and sustainably run the company? Yes

      @@utubekullanicisiLinus' statement:
"There won't be a big WAN Show segment about this or anything. Most of what I have to say, I've already said, and I've done so privately.
To Steve, I expressed my disappointment that he didn't go through proper journalistic practices in creating this piece. He has my email and number (along with numerous other members of our team) and could have asked me for context that may have proven to be valuable (like the fact that we didn't 'sell' the monoblock, but rather auctioned it for charity due to a miscommunication... AND the fact that while we haven't sent payment yet, we have already agreed to compensate Billet Labs for the cost of their prototype). There are other issues, but I've told him that I won't be drawn into a public sniping match over this and that I'll be continuing to move forward in good faith as part of 'Team Media'. When/if he's ready to do so again I'll be ready.
To my team (and my CEO's team, but realistically I was at the helm for all of these errors, so I need to own it), I stressed the importance of diligence in our work because there are so many eyes on us. We are going through some growing pains - we've been very public about them in the interest of transparency - and it's clear we have some work to do on internal processes and communication. We have already been doing a lot of work internally to clean up our processes, but these things take time. Rome wasn't built in a day, but that's no excuse for sloppiness.
Now, for my community, all I can say is the same things I always say. We know that we're not perfect. We wear our imperfection on our sleeves in the interest of ensuring that we stay accountable to you. But it's sad and unfortunate when this transparency gets warped into a bad thing. The Labs team is hard at work hard creating processes and tools to generate data that will benefit all consumers - a work in progress that is very much not done and that we've communicated needs to be treated as such. Do we have notes under some videos? Yes. Is it because we are striving for transparency/improvement? Yeah... What we're doing hasn't been in many years, if ever.. and we would make a much larger correction if the circumstances merited it. Listing the wrong amount of cache on a table for a CPU review is sloppy, but given that our conclusions are drawn based on our testing, not the spec sheet, it doesn't materially change the recommendation. That doesn't mean these things don't matter. We've set KPIs for our writing/labs team around accuracy, and we are continually installing new checks and balances to ensure that things continue to get better. If you haven't seen the improvement, frankly I wonder if you're really looking for it... The thoroughness that we managed on our last handful of GPU videos is getting really incredible given the limited time we have for these embargoes. I'm REALLY excited about what the future will hold.
With all of that said, I still disagree that the Billet Labs video (not the situation with the return, which I've already addressed above) is an 'accuracy' issue. It's more like I just read the room wrong. We COULD have re-tested it with perfect accuracy, but to do so PROPERLY - accounting for which cases it could be installed in (none) and which radiators it would be plumbed with (again... mystery) would have been impossible... and also didn't affect the conclusion of the video... OR SO I THOUGHT...
I wanted to evaluate it as a product, and as a product, IF it could manage to compete with the temperatures of the highest end blocks on the planet, it still wouldn't make sense to buy... so from my point of view, re-testing it and finding out that yes, it did in fact run cooler made no difference to the conclusion, so it didn't really make a difference.
Adam and I were talking about this today. He advocated for re-testing it regardless of how non-viable it was as a product at the time and I think he expressed really well today why it mattered. It was like making a video about a supercar. It doesn't mater if no one watching will buy it. They just wanna see it rip. I missed that, but it wasn't because I didn't care about the consumer.. it was because I was so focused on how this product impacted a potential buyer. Either way, clearly my bad, but my intention was never to harm Billet Labs. I specifically called out their incredible machining skills because I wanted to see them create something with a viable market for it and was hoping others would appreciate the fineness of the craftsmanship even if the product was impractical. I still hope they move forward building something else because they obviously have talent and I've watched countless niche water cooling vendors come and go. It's an astonishingly unforgiving market.
Either way, I'm sorry I got the community's priorities mixed-up on this one, and that we didn't show the Billet in the best light. Our intention wasn't to hurt anyone. We wanted no one to buy it (because it's an egregious waste of money no matter what temps it runs at) and we wanted Billet to make something marketable (so they can, y'know, eat).
With all of this in mind, it saddens me how quickly the pitchforks were raised over this. It also comes across a touch hypocritical when some basic due diligence could have helped clarify much of it. I have a LONG history of meeting issues head on and I've never been afraid to answer questions, which lands me in hot water regularly, but helps keep me in tune with my peers and with the community. The only reason I can think of not to ask me is because my honest response might be inconvenient.
We can test that... with this post. Will the "It was a mistake (a bad one, but a mistake) and they're taking care of it" reality manage to have the same reach? Let's see if anyone actually wants to know what happened. I hope so, but it's been disheartening seeing how many people were willing to jump on us here. Believe it or not, I'm a real person and so is the rest of my team. We are trying our best, and if what we were doing was easy, everyone would do it. Today sucks.
      Thanks for reading this."
My take is ltt has time to change, but linus dosent seem interested. The statement was made 12 hours ago the video has gained significant momentum since then so hopefully it becomes something ltt cant ignore.
For those saying it is gn getting jealous, you haven't understood what gn is saying. Ltt has a huge reach and massive presence it regularly lights fires under company's to get them to change. If they are entering the space of detailed reviews they need to be true and accurate. From Gn's video we can see they are not. Anybody who says this is gn being unhappy about labs is mistaken and a biased LTT fanboy. You lose nothing by this video being published there is no benefit to GN, this is for the benefit of the consumer and the audience.
Linus' comments indicate that he doesn't intend to make a significant change which has significantly reduced my faith in labs.
LTT need to address this and state what they are going to change, Or risk jeopardising the future of labs and LMG's credibility.

Please give your team more time to make content they can be proud of. The next product launch can wait. 11+ videos a week can wait. Get your core content back in order and take more pride in due diligence and your employees.
LTT was great when LTT cared and took time to do what they do. Nearly every piece of content from LTT can be broken down to "This thing coincidentally broke", "I spent HOW much??", and "I water-cooled my pc with a pool simply because", with no evergreen or informational content being produced with any kind of regularity.
Further, while I'm not a GN fan, your response of "they didn't do due diligence" is a bad one. They had no responsibility to contact you and they took all of the evidence that the public sees and boiled it down into a cohesive video. You guys did dumb/bad things, they called LMG out for it, and that's okay. Not everyone is out to get you; most people just want good content that doesn't actively harm other people for no reason.
Lastly, constant, often, and repeated corrections should not be a status quo. Every now and again, sure, who cares. But, when you actively say something harming to a brand or product in video and then correct it with text at the bottom, you are taking a lazy and lackluster approach to journalism.
Is this all a big deal? Each individual one, in a vacuum, can be excused and fixed. All of these combined shows a greater problem. This will inevitably blow over and be a nothing burger, but selling a small companies only prototype and then being heated that people are mad about it is an insane take. Improperly testing a product, giving it a bad word (regardless if it actually made a difference), and being heated when you're called out for it is an insane take. Being content with crunch, lackluster content, rushed testing, lazy corrections, and being heated when you're called out for it and excusing it because "growing pains" is an insane take.
I genuinely enjoy content produced by LMG as a whole, but I had noticed the crazy amount of corrections, rushed content, and "meh" inspiring content before GN spoke out about it. I thought that there was a lack of content because of the focus on labs, but it seems more like bad communication from Linus, crunch for writers and editors, and a mindset of quantity over quality has been the contributing factor.
LMG can do better, and it should do better. This is a transitional period, but that is not an excuse for bad reporting. I have faith that it *can* get better, but only a few can decide if it *will* get better or if it will be brushed under the rug and be allowed to just blow over.

Investing millions in automatic testing, a sound testing chamber, lab staff and more, and then not investing enough time in the actual end product to uphold the same standards makes no sense from any perspective. If the reviews aren't seen as trustable, no amount of spending on lab equipment can fix that.

You can buy Honda civics and toyota corollas for that money and it will take you point a to b perfectly fine. By the way even though ferrari wanted their prototype back i auctioned off the prototype in a car show for charity some time ago. I will send the value of the prototype to ferrari soon. Things feeling less personal, Linus being there as a required face to read a script prepared by a writer. Now it just feels like it is regressing to something like the very NCIX channel that Linus left.

      From the forum:
There won't be a big WAN Show segment about this or anything.

      Thanks for reading this.

LTT, GN, Jayztwocents, hardware unboxed all have conflicts of interest and if you think any of them are above that conflict of interest; you need to re-evaluate how you place your trust.
Tech videos on RUclips are just for entertainment, if a creator is taking sponsorships from companies that make products in the same category as products that creator reviews, your trust in their impartiality should drop to 0 immediately, otherwise you're just another sucker, repeating a tale as old as currency itself.
