Vegetarians should be concerned about lack of collagen in their diet. Collagen may help with osteoporosis because it's a protein that's a key part of bone mass. As people age, their bodies produce less collagen, which can lead to weaker bones and a higher risk of fractures. Some studies suggest that collagen supplements may help improve bone density and slow osteoporosis.
Although non-vegetarians can get collagen from meats, fish and eggs, one of best sources for vegetarians is SPIRULINA, which is dark green sea weed. There are a variety of supplements available, including Spirulina capsules.
Collagen is the primary building block of your body's skin, muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments, and other connective tissues. It's also found in your organs, blood vessels and intestinal lining. Proteins are made from amino acids. The main amino acids that make collagen are proline, glycine and hydroxyproline.

Amelia, Im 73 now. About 15 years ago, I had a bone density test and was diagnosed with osteoporosis. The doctor tried to give me a prescription for Actonel. My mom took that, and it deteriorated her gums. I refused the medication because of my mom's condition. Two years ago, I fell on my back porch and broke my shoulder in two places. Agonizing!!!! During that whole ordeal, the x-rays showed my bones were healthy!!!! Don't fret over the doctors' diagnosis. Just keep living a healthy lifestyle and be happy.

Sadly the primary responsibility of Doctors in most Western countries is no longer holistic health care, but pushing drugs for reward - supposedly to help the patient.....but themselves and insurance + drug companies first (there - I said it)

totally agree! had the same diagnosis at age 64 and was told to take medication that did not feel right. So, I did my own research and found that osteoporosis testing is not as accurate as it claims to be and many alternative remedies (to boost calcium absorption) and exercises to improve bone health ... that was 4 years ago and I am thriving... just take control of your own health!

sadly, the cost of healthcare in the US has lots to do with over regulation and gubment being involved in every step of the process which requires health care providers to have teams of people to shuffle paperwork (or digital records), compliance and regulation folks, and legal teams.
Then, that same gubment makes it difficult to impossible (depending on the state) for doctors to practice on their own with memberships for patience (you pay a small fee per month and can walk in and get many services for cheap or free as part of your monthly fee).

My wife was diagnosed with osteoporosis years ago. She took a medication for it for quite a few years that seemed to help. She is still (in her 70's) mountain biking and working out vigorously. Don't be too scared by the osteoporosis diagnosis. I was diagnosed with mild heart disease and high cholesterol 20 years ago. I've taken statins and lived more carefully since then and the heart disease is no worse, probably better since then. Heart disease is one of the most treatable conditions around.

Thanks for sharing this - this is great to know about KL. Osteoporosis is extremely common and usually broken hips are understood to break and CAUSE the fall, not to break because of a fall, so that's interesting to hear about the padding. At any rate, genetically European-descended women who have mostly lived in U.S. and are on the smaller side are the primary population for osteoporosis, having been bred for smallness over hundreds of years and being in a nutrition/health upbringing that does not super-promote massive weight-bearing. In U.S. it is a main reason given for going on HRT, though that only agrees with some people so it will be interesting to see what recommendations you get there from more hybrid east/west physicians. So glad you are well enough to do the weight work on it - many of us have other conditions that get hurt doing weight work (more like JP is running into), and it really limits and frustrates the plan. Thinking of you all - thanks for the update and don't worry about editing. People futz with that so much and honestly it doesn't add enough to a video relative to the effort one has to put in to edit. Just take interesting videos and then summarize or add a slide. I wish I had a live-in buddy to teach me how to do that! Glad y'all do :). Take care this week!

I just read Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Caldwell Esselstyn, please read it and don't get any surgery if that's what they tell you to do before you change your diet. Doctors rush to do procedures on people which can be avoided if you change your diet. Also the China Study book by Colin Campbell is about the same subject. And Amelia, my mother had osteoporis for at least 30 years before she died at 93. It is manageable and she walked fine until she departed.

I've had osteoporosis since age 40 for which I take bone medicine. I'm 75 and in past 3 years found in incredibly difficult to walk. I was then diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. I traveled to Boston to get a Cerevasc less invasive shunt in clinical trial in Boston. After over a litre of CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) was drained in the hospital, my walk returned to normal, I was almost ready for shunt surgery However, the trial demanded an echocardiogram which showed I had a congenital hole in my heart (atrial septal defect) which explains why I always complain how difficult life if for me in high altitude Denver, problems I do not experience at lower altitudes. It would have help me to learn this in my teens or 20s when my heart could have been easily repaired with a patch making my life more normal.

Amelia - you've gotten some great comments about treatment for osteoporosis, including checking your Vitamin D levels and taking Vit D supplements as well as increasing calcium intake. Weight bearing exercise is important. And there are a number of medications that can help build back bone. As 70 year old male, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis over 10 years ago and I've been able to largely reverse it. You need to educate yourself on this disorder. Building up your muscles is not going to hurt you but it's not enough to treat osteoporosis.
