  • Hello RUclips family...Trying something new here!! I decided to analyze the song "Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd. By taking a composer's perspective, I dig into what makes this 4-chord song work so incredibly well while never getting repetitive or boring!
It was a great learning experience and I hope the analysis can help other songwriters understand how to cleverly move a song forward and avoid monotony when not changing harmonic structure (chords), rhythm, dynamics or orchestration. In this case, the song uses changing Melodic rhythm and increasing Melodic register to superb effect.
It's brilliantly done. And there's a fantastic Golden Ratio moment which pays off so well in this song. You'll have to watch the video to understand how I connect Leonardo DaVinci and The Weeknd!!

I came to the weekend late. For me it wasn’t the structure of the music but for some reason he has this intense Korean I don’t give a crap vibe. There is a freedom, an intense freedom I feel when I listen to it. He literally makes me feel I can run into a wall and push through.

His album kiss land is very eastern inspired and a lot of the songs on there have moments where it’s only written within a pentatonic collection. It’s currently my favorite album of all time

Before my I laid my old eyes on the Weeknd and all his synth I had him pegged as a skinny british white guy with nerd glass's, baggy pants and a ton of hair jel . Before I laid my eyes on Teddy Swims I had the vocals down to some kind of Ella Fitzgerald black lady . How good to see such simple and brilliant music being written again by unlikely but very talented people .

    Hello Carl! Phenomenal work! ^_^
I'm in love with your Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin deep analysis. Great look of how to achieve tone, on songs deconstruction, habits... Do you think you could expand this with other great guitar players? Seeing Bluesbreakers era Clapton or Jeff Beck from your perspective would be great! :)

Hey Carl, a little off topic but I think some folks would appreciate it if you did a video on your Les Paul. There was a post recently on the Gibson Les Paul forum on Facebook that showed a picture of you with your Les Paul, people were commenting on your guitar and how what appears to be a Standard has a Custom neck (inlay in the 1st fret) and possibly an ebony finger board? it is very rare to see this. Anywho, I think a video would be really cool . Back on topic, for a song breakdown suggestion, how about Another Brick In the Wall, Pink Floyd. Cheers, Karl (my name as well 🙂)

I feel ashamed that I’ve been listening to music for 30 years and never realized or heard anything about the golden ratio in music. That’s crazy. The closest I’ve come is probably Tool using the Fibonacci Sequence on Lateralus. Not really at all the same thing but there’s math-ish stuff in both 😂🖤

I hope I'm not repeating myself w/this suggestion, but I'd really appreciate you dissecting "Denial Revisited" by Offspring. Sadly, it's a song I don't think they've ever played live. (My theory as to why is that it would be too difficult to sing live). It's such a sleeper song, I've always wondered why it wasn't a big hit (?) It's also one of only a handful of songs I learned to play on guitar; of those, the one I found most fun to play. Cheers, happy new year.

Okay Carl, we're gonna have a fight here now! I knew about the golden ratio, but I never applied it to music.
The very first thing I did after you mentioned the time ratio is that I figured out what 61% of 8 minutes and 3 seconds is. Golden Ratio applies to Stairway to Heaven! I cannot fathom the irony. 5:29-31 is roughly the mark, and at 5:29 exactly is where Jimmy hits the final F arpeggio into the Fanfare section before the solo. My brain hurts.
