  • I found 4 boats for free on CL and this 1965 Larson Runabout was the nicest of them. I'm told she ran great when parked so lets see if that holds to be the truth!
UPDATE: THE BOAT HAS SOLD. You may see this flaming blue beauty cruising out on the Delaware River sometime. The new owner lives down near Marcus Hook

Old Evinrudes and Johnsons are basically the small block Chevy, and Fords of the boat community. A crescent wrench, duct tape, and plugs will typically get them back alive.
Ditch the boat, and keep the outboard

Evinrude & Johnson are the same engine, same manufacture, only difference between them are the name. Such as a Fard & Lincoln are the same manufacture. Founded by Ole Evinrude in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1907, it was formerly owned by the publicly traded Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) since 1935 but OMC filed for bankruptcy in 2000. It was working as a subsidiary of Canadian Multinational Bombardier Recreational Products but was discontinued in May of 2020.

That Honda VTEC outboard actually has a J series V6 in it straight out of a Honda Odyssey, The smaller ones (150hp) actually use a K series from an Accord. I believe some of the smaller ones in the hundred horsepower range used the old single overhead cam Civic engines.

Just for info, the exhaust coming from up the motor is what we call ( in france ) "échappement de port" which means "harbor exhaust"
It's a way to not pollute the water in the harbor or at the dock when you're at idle, when you pick up speed the pressure of the exhaust pick up and most of it will go through your prop like what you know

Another phenomenal vid, Chris! Love anything you and Miss Jenn and Gus and Turbo bring us ! Grea t content, from a great young American couple! So much fun. And like others have said, I love the mix of content, and but especially the boat stuff! My Grandpa worked for Johnson Motors for close to 40 years, and so I grew up with all this kind of stuff. That's an Evinrude Motor for sure. OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) made Inboard / Outboard Motors, and the Cobra was their foray into that World. They could never quite nail it down like Mercruiser. Always chasing. The Cobras were getting good though, before OMC started to crash. But they made some of the best outboard motors in the World, with the tried and true Johnsons and Evinrudes. Great motors, and the V4 was awesome! So wide compared to the tall Mercs. OMC also made the Sea-Drives.... a kinda weird out-drive... not really outboard... not really inboard / outboard. A weird looking thing, and I don't think they ever quite got them right either. But you can't go wrong with an ole' Evinrude or Johnson! I'm with others.... the boat is whatever. But you got something great in that motor - for free! Very distinctive sound when you hear an Evinrude or Johnson cranking. I grew up with that great sound! Also - VRO is basically what you said.... Variated Ratio Oil Injection. The first few years OMC did id... it was not good. Not reliable. It got better for sure. But you can't beat he old gas/oil mix. You're safe to got that way until you can get your arms around that VRO system, and be sure it's working. or maybe just keep it bypassed. I'd put that motor on another boat.

I once owned a 16' 1959 Luger Le Continental with original McColloch Royal Scott 40 and trailer. Bought it in 2003 at a farm auction in Minnesota for $100. What a joy it was to restore and enjoy that old runabout. It's retro look turned a lot of heads on the lake. Unfortunately, I later moved out of state, leaving the boat with a neighbor, who stored it in his barn. Having every intention to retrieve it, time simply passed and I later learned that he had traded the boat with another neighbor...for a shotgun. Perhaps one day I'll try to track it down and buy it back. The old outboards may be work, but they are simple and manageable. Happy boating to the luck and hopefully mechanically inclined buyer!!

The E in the model number stands for Evinrude. Also the VRO tanks for those motors were like a mini fuel tank outside the motor with a primer ball. They were always deleted because they failed. I have to say your brave for a quick dump in the river but i highly recommend a little kicker motor even a trolling motor to save the paddling or swimming back to the ramp 🤣

Good engines, on a cold start, when looking at the remote control, there is a black little lever, raise that up, it will advance the timing and throttle for cold starting. turn the key once, push in, turn it again and hold it, it will start very fast. The thing you removed was the VRO pump. Basically an auto oiler mixer. Fuel pumps on those are the way to go.

Growing up, my grandad had a 1960's StarCraft Viscount runabout, 16ft aluminum hull, with a Johnson 90hp outboard. Fuel tanks were two standard 5gal Johnson tanks, kept in the stern.
One word of caution. My grandad had some civil engineer training, and he was concerned that if the motor got knocked into reverse, at speed, that it could potentially rip the stern off the boat. He ended up adding two rather large aluminum gussets, at 45's, to the transom. Basically corner braces.
He also added oarlocks and carried some longass oars so we could row to shore in case of a motor failure.
Boat was used out on Lake Michigan, generally perch fishing, but it had plenty of ass to pull someone on skis. Good times.
Good luck with the repairs. It's a handy size boat to have, easy to maintain.

    The Stick
It's crazy to see for sure how someone will adapt this or that. This 'stick' mount did remind me of the Merc Marquis '02 model I had back a year or two ago. The heater/defrost was inoperable when I purchased it, used of course. So I had a shop do the dirty task of getting to the repair of the blend door, no easy nor inexpensive job to say the least.
When I went to pay the invoice the guy that did the job had left the part he removed for me to inspect.
Crazy as it seemed then, somewhere along the way someone had decided that being the blend door wouldn't close when not warranted that a stick [ piece/block ] of wood would be just what was conviently at hand as a workable solution in shutting off the flow of heat, permantly. In Arizona not an issue 'cept in winter mornings.
What is ironic is where that make shift block of wood had to be placed, how in heaven's name that was done, I can't fathom. Chris I'm sure you are likely aware of where this blend door is located up under the dashboard and why not order the part if you've gone that far to DIY this job, quite the mystery.
It's possible the job of rigging the blend door with that block of wood, which was glued in place, could be managed without removing the dash. If I recall correctly, the job performed correctly did require removing the dash, at least the invoice seemed to tell me that when I left a chunk of my week's wage with the cashier.
At 63 years of age, retired with a part time 'C' store job and not in the best of physical condition, I had little serious thought of trying to DI'Myself.

I love the flames and that's a cool motor, I think its worth a remodel and would make a good little fishing boat and for being small I bet it could handle a big river, has good height and depth for being small!👍

@@NoNonsenseKnowHowhey man I have a question I have a 2012 Hyundai Elantra and it cuts out quite a bit falls on his face mostly when you get a gas taken off and I'm feeling it could be the fuel pump and I tested all the injectors and coil packs which they're on the you know wires but I pulled each one off and never change never you know you can tell they were working in other words it would cut down and put it back up when I put them all back on one at a time but would you lean toward a fuel pump I mean it's only 105 bucks online RockAuto and I'm going to change fuel filter too just in case which change the pump I understand that but would you lean toward the fuel pump just asking for your opinion I already had another guy but he gave me a list of things that could be and on a 2012 Hyundai Elantra I would put that kind of money in it lol

Those may be the wrong plugs in the engine. The marine plugs are typically flat with no extended center part. I ran into the same thing on my 85hp Force engine. Napa was able to source me the right plugs. Love the old boat videos! Got my own 450$ 1988 Bayliner and love the thing.

You have to hold the primer bulb with one end vertical for the check valve to work. The end nearest to the engine should be pointing up

Nice work on the lake boat. I thought it looked great, in general. You might try buffing the windshield, and a few other things for a bigger payout. All in all, seems like a fair price for what's there. Nice to see Jenn, and the Gus man again. Been in the hospital for a while, so missed seeing all you guys. Good luck.

Those old V4s are great and practically indestructible. I have an Evinrude 125 and Johnson 90.
There’s more reasons to delete that VRO kit than keep it. I trust premix more!
OMC owned Evinrude/Johnson, until Bombardier bought them in 2001. OMC made the Cobra stern drive motors
You should carry a bottle of Dawn dish soap in your boat arsenal, to clean up/break up any fuel or oil spills in the water. The Coast Guard will be happy! 😁
Those little boats look like fun! I see them on marketplace now and then. Got too many projects going right now to get one, but maybe later.
    Love the shirt!

I’m pretty sure I had the exact same model boat at one time, every detail of that hull looked the same. Mine had a 65 hp Johnson. I’m wanting to get back into boats, but I have a yard full of atv’s and side by sides to get going and sell first.
