Sometimes stress and frustration and a little bit of fear and anxiety come out in tears don’t be hard on yourself it’s always really aggravating when something like this happens but you’re a bad ass and you can do this
This video felt so real to me and you are really strong for sharing it. The part when the lady keyed your car really pissed me off! Anyways I am glad you made it thru and are in a better space. Please consider getting AAA is you havn't already. Otherwise having a car towed is a rip off
You were in a heightened state being on the side of the road in a very dangerous situation. I think your reaction was perfectly rational. You handled it and got through it. I am impressed. Chin up.☺️
This is a nightmare. I would have been just as upset. Probably more. Thank you for sharing this with us. Handling life's problems on our own is really difficult. I know. I feel very alone.
Hey, I was going though these comments and I notice I missed this one. Sorry you feel so alone. I recognize your username and picture and it's always nice to see you. Hope things get better 🌻💛
So sorry to see you in such pain, remember tough times never last and it will get better soon. I have always found having a AAA membership very useful in situations like this one, one call and they have someone come out and fix it or put on the spare tire. For free. With the amount of traveling you are doing I am impresses that this has not happened sooner, it does happen, I long ago lost count of how many tire blowouts and other road side emergencies I have had, and that my kids have had. Next time will be less stressful now that you have been through this. And if you are in central Wisconsin and have a need like this, give me a call and we will come out and help. Bob
Growth comes from being uncomfortable and pushing yourself beyond your limits. This adventure is definitely pushing you beyond your limits at times. Sometimes those times are in nature and sometimes those times are because of circumstances of an unplanned nature. I will say when you are raw emotionally it is always best to treat everyone a little kinder so you don't take out your situational anxiety on others. It took me a long time to realize that and it has been a guiding light. ABK (Always be Kind) when possible until it is not. That being said you did really well going throughout a very stressful event continuing to utilize your resources as best you could. Don't hash over would've, could've, should've too much and forgive yourself. Last piece of advice: If you are ever on the side of the road from here on out going into the evening hours pay the first tow truck that says he is on their way and spend the extra $40.00, money is not worth your life. Being frugal with your safety is different then shopping for the best deal. Still over all a great job handling everything now no more hashing over it and keep on trucking.
Shit, sometimes the universe just delivers the worst situations. I genuinely was upset watching this, I’m so sorry you had to face this. I really related to wishing you had someone there to deal with that with you. While it’s incredible how resilient and resourceful you are on your own, I think it’s totally natural to wish for that. I know it’s not the same, but we (your viewers) are definitely with you in spirit! And I’m so glad your family came through for you.
When I have bad things happen I get mad/sad/frustrated...that's human nature. What I try to do with negative emotions is use them as "motivational fuel". If I get upset over something...I calm down and move forward...the bravest thing a person can do after something bad happens is to keep moving forward. I take my new motivational fuel and use it to help me take those steps forward. Another thing...I had someone close to me say right before she died was..."don't let them win". Keep walking forward Maddie and don't let the negatives in life win.
I am so glad you decided to post this! I knew everyone would be encouraging and supportive. We are rooting for you from all over. Can't wait to see the rest of the journey!
Wow. So very sorry for the tough time you had in this video. It really seems that when it rains it pours! You’re a champ and I’m betting you’re going to see brighter times. Keep your head up. I didn’t see whether you mentioned having a spare available or not to change that blowout. please look into that for future to at least get off side of road and be able to get to a place of safety. Get your brother to show ya how to change it if possible. And ignore me if I’m dumb and you know all this. No matter whether folks have it worse or not - you feel what you feel and that was a tough situation! If ya were around Mississippi I’d certainly have helped however possible. Keep your head up.
Hey, sorry I missed replying to this! The dealership I bought from told me I wouldn't need a spare if I got this van because it had run flat tires! Otherwise, I would definitely already know how to change a tire. Thanks for the kind words! I feel a lot better about the situation now that some time has passed!
You learned a lot and wisdom is already kicking in. So proud of you for recognizing your mental space wasn’t appropriate for going on an adventure at the time. Looking forward to watching your further growth.
I really appreciated this video. It was brave of you to put this up, and very helpful to those of us considering van life. We must anticipate things like this happening from time to time. Bob Wells always said that in van life, your lows and highs are both extreme and this was a good reminder of that.
❤Dang Ranger... This video absolutely broke my heart. Sheeesh😢 I wish I could've been there to hook you up with how to fix a flat tire on your own lessons, how useless and costly run flats are etc.. I have a new found respect for you, after knowing you went through all of this with little to no help on your own, and I'm super glad to see you've made it out on the other side a stronger person! Keep your chin up you're definitely the toughest person ever, and whatever life throws at you it's never gonna keep you down.❤
You are doing the community a great service by posting this video. Countless are deceived by the endless rainbows and unicorns that van life represents on social media. Real life happens. Stay strong
Miss Maddie, new subscriber. You're very brave for posting this video and showing your true emotions. For not seeing all your video's it still didn't feel good to see you going thru this. I wished, and I'm sure there are others that feel the same way, that we could of reached through the screen to help you. You're a trooper. You kept on trying to keep a positive outlook despite all the complications you faced. Stay strong young lady, for this too shall pass. It's a shame you had to see the bad side of people, but Please, keep on being the Maddie we love !
Wow! Everything was part of an unbelievable string of events. Run flat tires. Towing plan on insurance. Finally a wrecker to Walmart. Everything sounds perfect but everything let you down, and stranded, because of some little detail no one would ever think of. I think you did very well with everything stacked against you. Thanks for showing a real day in van life. None of those fancy Instagrammers would have had the guts to do that!
Hey Maddie, catching up on your older videos after discovering your AT series (and enjoying it very much). Wanted to comment on the "people have it way worse than you" part - yes, that's true, some people do. There is always going to be someone worse off than you, but it's all a matter of perspective. If the situation you were in was a personal low for you, then somebody else's personal low doesn't minimize what you were feeling in that moment. Just because you aren't experiencing or have not experienced what another person has in their own life, doesn't mean you aren't allowed to feel how you feel about yours. I'll quote the great Jeff Tweedy - "a man so drunk he could hardly stand, told me once holding my hand, 'suffering's the same for everyone'...he was right, but I was wrong, to agree." There's a great story behind that verse if you read his autobiography, but I digress. The only other thing I'd add is that the move to run-flat tires rather than spares by the manufacturers is a joke. If you find yourself in remote areas on a regular basis, spend the few hundred bucks to get a spare wheel with the correct size tire on it - it will pay for itself many times over in situations such as these. Best of luck to you!
Maddie awesome heartfelt human emotion on full display, thank you for being a incredible young woman displaying all what it is to be human, much joy be yours.
Hey Maddie, you made me tear up a few times. I’m glad you have gotten through your rough patch. I was glad to see your “cry count “ it shows you’re okay now. I’m a retired mechanic and shop owner. I always enjoyed helping people out when they were in a bad place. It let me be a caring fellow human and made me feel good about myself. Not all auto technicians are out to rip you off but that said some are. Become a member of Triple A. It’s a cheap way to get tow insurance. I have it and I’m in the repair business. Love your stuff, thanks for being real.
Hey, sorry I missed replying to this comment! Thank you for your kind words! I have gotten AAA since then. Good to hear about the nice mechanics out there!
Wow. You handled these situations like a champ. I live in my car and I’ve been dealing with some car issues for the last few weeks. Yesterday, while driving, my tire was punctured. I was able get off the interstate & to drive to a parking lot. Once I parked, I cried like a baby. I curled up in a little ball in the drivers seat and boo hooed like a baby. Too many issues have been happening and that was the final straw. My car is currently at the shop and it will cost $1200 because I need 4 new tires, as well. I understand your frustrations. Good luck 🙂.
Hugs. Your doing amazing travels. It gets stressful. It’s good to let it out. I’m happy your ok. We love your videos. People can be awful. You handled yourself with grace. Be the wonderful lady you are.
So sorry about all that you went thru in this video. You can’t be accused of not telling like it is! Thank you for convincing me I don’t want a AWD Sienna. Mine is fwd but I was always hoping I could get a AWD. Given the limitations of those run flat tires I’m no longer interested. Please look into Emergency Road Service. It’s not that expensive but even with one tow it would of paid for itself. I used to commute 200 km a day and used it several times a year. These days being retired I now often go the whole year without using it but it’s worth the piece of mind. That was a sad video to watch but at the end it was good so see our good ole Maddie back to good ole self! That was sure one of those when you thought things couldn’t get worse situations. Hoping the rest of your July went better and looking forward to seeing your next video. You are the best!
I am so sorry about the car troubles, yes it is normal to react the way you did. The feelings of being so so at the mercy of circumstances is so frustrating. Please know that you are precious and cared about.
Your reaction is perfectly normal, Maddie! It was a potentially dangerous situation. its okay to be freaked out. You came through it! Good job! We are women and women cry when they are scared and stressed. Perfectly normal reaction and perfectly reasonable too! No fault! Tears in a situation like that are the only reasonable response!
AAA membership is a must when driving a car. It is less than 100 dollars/year. I think you get two tows per year, they start your care, they help you get in your care when you lock yourself out. Those are some of the services I have used thus far that they provide. I have used them several times so the membership is totally worth it!! And they care about your well being and they are very nice to you when stressed out about something going wrong with your care. They also make suggestions in where to take your car for service if needed. You have a right to your feelings.
Aww Maddie! You had a really tough break. The timing was awful, you had a blowout! you spent the night on the edge of a highway! Then the icing on the cake was that rude woman, I don't think you reacted badly at all. You're feelings are totally justified, you were actually way more calm than I would have been. Thank you for putting this out there, I think it was brave and I admire you for keeping it real and showing van life the way it can be. I felt so bad for you and you also took a big financial hit. All that can take away from the fun adventure. Thanks again for being so brave with this video!! HUGS!
"You're trying to look for the good in each day", I loved this phrase cause I do the same everyday, I understand everything you passed ,about the lady, the problem on your car...all this stress and all...It really broke my heart when I saw you crying...I just...I just wanted to hold you and say CALM DOWN MADDIE EVERYTHING WILL BE OK. You're a beautiful soul doing what you love, unfortunately there are people trying to push you down....but you're fine now and that's important. You're strong Maddie and unique.
Your videos are an inspiration to many people! I just started watching and can't get enough of your experiences. You're super brave for going out and experiencing the world like you are!
You should ask Walmart security if they have video footage & they could possibly get her identity/license plate...give them a call if you feel like pursuing it. hey, I had a similar incident with my car about 2wks ago...it just died, on a busy road during evening rush hour...called my cousin and he picked me up...I was calling my insurance roadside assistance for a tow, one was in route...over 100 degrees outside, so we left my car there...apparently city police have on demand tow trucks which beat my roadside tow there. Which then, my car was impounded by the city and cost me about $250 to get it out and towed to the mechanic...it was the alternator that went out & another $500 repair. SO, I feel ya! sucks! We are human, things upset us, we have feelings, nothing out of the ordinary that anyone else would do. Be Maddie and you will be cool! BTW, I have Amica insurance and was very disappointed with their roadside assistance that I PAY FOR. SMH. Sometimes getting off the road to recharge is a good thing. Hopefully your adventures will continue for years to come...maybe you can upgrade to a like a Class B RV/Van so you can do your showers/bathroom, and have more amenities...get on RVTrader.com and look around there are some good deals on some used stuff....js...take care ma'am! Cheers n beers!!
If everyone was as independent an empathetic as you, the world would be a better place! I’m glad you were able to get through such a difficult part of the trip 👍
Hello Mad, I haven't been able to follow much lately since I was on my own 5,500 + mile road trip lasting about 3 weeks. When I saw this video, the first thought I had is that your experience encapsulates the nature of travel and Murphy's Law. I suppose the only way to overcome adversity is with a positive outlook which you were able to muster when needed.
Oh Maddie I’m so sorry you had to endure that. You are incredibly strong. You always see things with a better perspective than most ❤ I’m so happy your parents helped you out with the hotel 🙏🏻 I wish I could have reached through my tv to give you a big old hug and tell you - this too shall pass and that you’ve got this 💪🏻 sending lots of love 💗
i'm really sorry this happened to you but thank you for uploading this. this showcases the realities of van life, particularly the bumps (no pun intended) of it. it's great to explore new roads and such but when problems occur, they're way harder to fix on the road than in the safety of your own home.
Maddie, I think you did a wonderful job at moving through something difficult. 👏 Thank you for sharing even when you're unsure about how it will land. We love you 🏔❤️
Wow.. Bad spot to be... I understand the aggravation of your rig being down... If the insurance isn't handling your tow situation well, I would really suggest triple A... It has saved my butt on the side of the highway... Good luck and keep on going...
Hi Maddie new subscriber. Been catching up on your videos. Great adventures, on my adventures alone it does suck to not have anyone to vent to but you handled it pretty well. Best of luck on your journey, hope things work out
We watch every video and enJOY all of them. We are in our mid 60s We have been where you are in the blow out video, we had just bought our first brand new car (1975) Volks Rabbit. Diesel And after 20 min on the road to our home (40 min) ride our brand new diesel car engine locked up with only 71 miles on it, we were 20 and 23 yrs old had just put down 1,000 on a 9,000 dollar car. And thought our world had ended, oh and it was also nearly midnight. We were able to call to leave an answering machine message for the dealer mechanic, to our surprise. The owner of the dealership answered!! He agreed to send a tow truck and also to take 7s home Those we're different times BUT he was still a great guy to do this after midnight Please find it in yourself to keep going You will never be sorry. Keep focusing on the positive Watch your life events as IF they were a movie And then simply ask... " Ok. What's. Next! 🌹" With a BIG Smile Because one day you WILL Smile....
Sorry I missed answering this! I try to answer everyone with the same time and thoughtfulness they put into the comment, and I have a hard time with the longer comments, because I can tell you put a lot of care into it when writing. That's great to hear about the dealership owner answering and helping you out! Always nice when things work out better than you thought. Since this event, I realized that it was a lot of scary and frustrating things happening all at once, and I wasn't overreacting. The support and kindness that came out of me posting this was really helpful and kind of restored my faith in the world! Thank you for being part of that!!
Maddie, use Discount Tire for all your tires and car care. In the west its called American Tire. Once you are in their computer system nationwide!! , you get a 30% discount for all your tires and you can also get road hazard insurance which you should always have on every tire, Including your spare. I was so glad I had them out in Utah when I got a flat tire in Arches National Park. I had to drive at a snails pace all the way to Grand Junction where I discovered an American Tire. Lo and behold! I was in their computer system!!! Glory Hallelujah!! and I got the discount and insurance for the discount rate! Each of my tires on this Buick Encore cost $150 so it was a godsend!! You'll be glad you have it. Also, every woman needs to have AAA !! Its about $80 a year and its really important to have. Also, your car insurance should include a rental car coverage for situations like that. Mace! Alarm! Long fingernails for DNA collection!
Thanks Maddie for telling the truth about being a nomad and van life! All kinds of things go wrong with automobiles and RVs!! That is why I do NOT RV at all. RVs are worth as much or more than a typical house, but yet they depreciate. Plus, more things go wrong with RVs even though all kinds of things can go wrong with a regular automobile. Insurance companies are all greedy thugs and traitors, period!!
Maddie, you just got a new subscriber 😊. I first watched your JMT series and a few other vids. So sorry you went through this horrible situation hun. You are a super trooper for getting through it all. Look forward more vlogs from you. ✌️
Since she was over the yellow lines she would’ve had to cover any damages however minor. You don’t have to be sorry Maddie. She’s in the wrong at all levels. that 1,400+ bill would’ve made most people at the least shed a tear.
Maddie, I recently found your channel and have been watching you and I must say, you my dear are a bad ass. I just wish I could still hike and enjoy the wilderness. I take it you didn’t carry a spare tire or you would have used it. I think you handled yourself very well considering the predicament you were in. You should reach out to AAA car insurance as for a small fee you can free tow services, I believe you get two tows over 200 hundred miles and 4 tows for under 200 miles for about a hundred bucks. And don’t let people like that person in the parking lot complaining about her bumper. And don’t fall into that “ she came back and keyed your car” as you are a better person then that. And to be honest you don’t know for sure. I will continue to watch your adventures because your assume. Happy trails young lady 😊
It’s true that you have to slow down with the run flat tires. This must have been a very stressful situation. I wonder what Toyota was thinking by not including a spare tire with this minivan. Also, that thumping sound is from a baffle in the back of the van that opens and closes when the pressure changes in the van. Too bad you didn’t have any safer place to sleep. I can’t believe they keyed your van. Honestly, sometimes a bad encounter can drag on for days in your mind.
Sorry to see you so upset and having a bit of bad luck, would love to be there with you to help you get through this bad time but you are strong and will get through it yourself.
One reason I rarely say anything to folks before something like this happens is because until it happens they think I'm just a fool trying to spend their money. However, while it might have changed on the 2021 -2022 models AWD Sienna's from 2011-2020 had run flat tires because the mechanical pieces that are required for the rear drive portion of the AWD system took up the space normally used for the spare tire in the front wheel drive models. If traveling remotely in any vehicle without a spare tire it's always a great idea to at least purchase a temporary spare and preferably a full size spare and find a spot for it. Even if that means strapping it to the roof. Run flats are garbage tires anyway and Toyota should have found a better solution especially considering they know that families with small kids and mothers (no offense because many guys aren't either) that might not be as mechanically inclined will be driving them. Anyway, it's worth the money to just replace them all with regular tires and a spare as soon as they wear out or sooner if you have the cash. Trying to travel on a tight budget can be trying at times. I'm a do it myself sort of person so I don't like asking for help but as I've gotten older I've realized that sometimes you have to. On a car I can at least temporarily repair almost anything that can be fixed outside of a garage setting to get it back to civilization but sometimes you still need a friend with a winch. And sometimes you still need that duct tape and bailing wire or zip ties you forgot. You did fine Maddie and getting through things like this will help you realize that you can and when something happens in the future it won't seem as big of a deal. I hope you did go visit your brother and relax a bit. I'm a go, go, go person when traveling and I get burned out because of it so sometimes I simply force myself to cut a day or two short and spend a lazy day seeing the shops within a mile or so of a hotel. Yep, that costs a little more money but I've found that there's always a price to be paid. On the one hand it's monetary and on the other it's mental and physical well being. And letting your mental and physical well being suffer is a lot more expensive than a day at the spa. Well, okay, the Holiday Inn Express hot tub!
I have been watching your videos and have grown fond of you, I saw the title of this one, and my momma bear came out. (I'm old enough to be your mother) I was like who abandoned Maddie 😢😡 You're so sweet, funny and kind. Sorry, Maddie, the world sucks!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm from the area and I get flat tires all the time. Theres lots of debris on the road around here. It was scary the first time it happened to me. Similarly, the person from insurance was not helpful for me either. You can take away the fear by learning how to change a flat tire. It's not difficult at all. There are tons of tutorials on youtube. I apologise for the bad experience you had with one of the locals. Just ignore that lady. Most people are nice around here. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Washington state and be safe.
This is the 2nd of your videos I've seen. I subscribed on the 1st one! As a female who travels solo, I feel ya girl! Triple A all the way! Seriously, my father got me the service when he got tired of saving my butt, lol! I've had it for over 20 years now. They've unlocked my doors, brought me gas, charged my battery as well as given me a tow. They are reliable. They show up. Most I ever waited was 2 hours....and that's here on the Olympic Peninsula. Best wishes for your future adventures!
I had a similar situation this past week. I twisted my left ankle while hiking alone on a state park hiking trail. I called park staff for help after trying to hobble alone to the end of the trail. (Too painful to continue.) Good people stopped to offer assistance as I waited for park staff. One offered water, two guys helped me hop for a distance. When I got to urgent care, I called from the parking lot for help getting inside and back to my car. Hotel people helped me in and out since I left urgent care in a boot and with crutches. I felt very alone and vulnerable. It was humbling to be alone and four hours from home. I had no choice but to go outside my comfort zone and ask for help. I had expenses I had not anticipated (hotel stay and was no show at my reserved campground site for that night). It was unsettling and I was teetering near the cry zone for a bit, but in the end I see it as sort of a real life experience that gave me clarity on the level of my resourcefulness and inner strength when put to an unexpected challenge. Fortunately I did not have a break, just a bad sprain. I am planning to get shoes with better tread and invest in trekking poles. I’m glad to hear you will continue your 50-state adventure. You’ll be so glad you completed your intended goal!
Hey Vonnie, sorry it’s taken me so long to respond! Sorry to hear about your injury on the trail. I know exactly what you mean about feeling alone, vulnerable, and humbled. No one can be prepared for everything (even though some people claim to be!) and it sucks when it happens to you. Glad to hear people were helpful and kind to you!
Oh this made me so sad for you. I like that you can poke fun at yourself. That was absolutely not your fault. Shit happens and it just happen to pile on high for you that day. Hopefully you won’t have any more days like that for awhile. God bless you honey. Hope you enjoyed your time with your brother. 🥰
Hi Maddie, haters gonna hate, unfortunately. Thank God most people are good and kind. You are an awesome person, always member that. If I can ever help just let me know, until then, Happy Trails
Holy you had a perfectly normal reaction! I know this was posted 4mos ago, but my heart was breaking for you. At the end when you talked about being tired because of things like finding a place to shower or use the bathroom, my first thought was maybe it's time to get yourself a pee jar and bucket system for emergency #2's. Keep being you Maddie❤️ Might take some stress off daily living. Just a thought:)
Thank you, friend. I'm making a documentary about my whole time on the road, and when I wrote out the part about this incident, I could see I wasn't being dramatic, and it was really healing. I actually have a pee jar and the kind of fold-up toilet you put special bags in, but I dread having to pour out the cup or throw away the bag where people can see me and might put 2 and 2 together about what I'm doing! Thank you for the suggestion, though, and of course the kind words!!
I am SO surprised that no one stopped !! I have had similar situations and someone always stopped … even tho as a young lady at the time I wasn’t sure I WANTED them to stop ! ( a man approaching my car just made me MORE afraid … ) but maybe I was lucky , each time it was a very good kind Samaritan . I just wanted to fly there and pick you up and hug you !!! By the way there is NOTHING wrong with crying … the body gave us that ability for a reason ! I always think clearer after a good cry ! Would 911 and having police come out and call a tow have been a viable option ?? I would think the operators would have known how to handle it .
Aw thank you! A woman actually did stop and check on me but there wasn’t much to be done without a tow truck. Looking back now, I was just super shaken and worried about money, but all was okay in the end!
believe me, there are much worse things in life. Optimism is good, but it is also necessary to be mentally prepared for unexpected events. I've been helped for years by the idea that it's luck and not a matter of course when something goes according to plan. this is real life.
Yeah, I know there are worse things in life. But you can't just think about people who have it worse and instantly feel better. I just feel more sad! And I know this is real life, too. I never expected things to be perfect, but even being mentally prepared for life's up and downs doesn't make them easy
Get AAA Auto club. Buy a small 12 volt air pump. Keep a couple of cans of fix flat in your van. Maybe you could have just bought one regular tire and put it on the back temporarily a cheap tire I hope these tips help you in the future but don't give up
It's understandable to be upset with what you went through. I think most would be. It's not easy in the moment and time does heal the wounds. You're a kind person in a world that often isn't kind and one has to be on guard for while carefully letting in those good ones into our lives who prove themselves to be over time. I'm glad you had the support of your parents in that situation. Throughout life I've come across people who fit the "narcissistic" or "flying monkey" profile. If you look up those words or terms on RUclips you'll see what I'm talking about. Be careful with those types of people when you come across them and confiding in them. The best way I know to be diplomatic with people I've learned from Dale Carnegie's book "How To Win Friends And Influence People." I don't know if you could have been diplomatic with that one person who keyed your vehicle. That's just childish behavior. You can try to be diplomatic with people and sometimes assertiveness is the best way to deal with people but people will end up doing what they want to without some moral code to go by.
Hey Maddie,,thanks for sharing,,I enjoy your videos for the adventures,,when I saw this one I was like wow, ,anyway keep your head up,,,I'm sure by now it's gotten a little better for ya
Thank you! It has! The big hike I just did put some distance in between this event and the present. It gave me something else to focus on, time to think about life in general, and joy for my new accomplishments
I was driving home from my adventure in Wyoming when I blew my van's water pump. I was lucky to be in a position to be close to some family in Souix Falls, SD. I wish you would have had someone to lean on too! I think you had more than appropriate reactions to all the things that went wrong! Definitely need to be kind to yourself and take time to regroup! Hang in there!
Sorry I miss replying to this! I was told I was being overdramatic a lot when I was growing up, so now I don't really trust myself to have a proportionate response. Since then, it's definitely come into perspective for me! As always, thank you for your kind comment!
Absolutely the rudest lady ever (one in parking lot-about the bumper) !! Was she blind n couldn't see your flat tire, clearly you were already having a bad day- but she still chose to be mean to you, people like her frustrate me! Emotional stress is always draining it feels like. One time I was camping for 4 days w my kiddos, everything was fun. We got all packed n loaded in the car ready for home, n my battery was dead - we were 30 minutes from the nearest town. It was awful! I feel for you Maddie, I'm sending you hugs n happy thoughts! 💕💕🌄🌄
Hey Michelle, sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you! I was overwhelmed with response to this video (a good problem to have!) so I’m trying to respond bit by bit. Thank you for your kind words. My flat tire was in the back so it is possible she didn’t see, but yeah that was really rude of her. I guess some people just need to take out their frustrations on others! Sorry to hear about your battery dying 30 minutes from town too! Sounds like a real downer for your trip. Thanks again for your well wishes and kind words! I really appreciate you being a part of my channel 💕❤️
💛 That was back in July, and while it sucked to go through, it seems distant now. I have that experience behind me and I’m proud I got myself through it
Hey Maddie, I usually watch your videos on my tv so don't have the option to comment usually, came on here just to say you are awesome and you don't need to apologize for feeling your emotions, Thank you for sharing your journey with us. If you are still in Portland with your brother you should really check out Gravy, amazing breakfast place there. French toast, oatmeal and their biscuits and gravy obviously are all amazing. I do have a quick question about your van, does it not have a spare or do you not have a tire compressor patch kits? If you make your way through SF/Bay Area would be happy to show you around/teach you how to fix your own tires if you don't know how at least. Wish you the best and look forward to your future videos.
Need all 3: AAA Plus membership, full size/spare tire, and tire inflator pump with repair plug kit. And no more RFT run flat tires. Ever. You need someone to provide advice in difficult, technical, and extreme situations. Fun to travel and see, but not prepare is very dangerous…. I have travel the whole world and also driven thousands of miles…. Contact anytime for help…wish you well, be safe out there!
I am so sorry you went through all this. You came out with a good attitude despite the adversity. Be well be safe and swing by DC and my wife and i will buy you a couple of local brews.
I know this nightmare all too well. Happened to me a couple of times in Lexington in college. Once at night in a bad location. Got lucky after walking to a gas station and waiting around and running into a tow truck stopping for gas.
For what you're paying for insurance ( you had mentioned in one of your first videos) they should have paid the money , couple hundred , for the tow. Thats ridiculous. You were not in a safe position . Horrible look for Liberty Mutual.! So sorry you had to go through this.! I took the run flats off. My car when bought it .. Anyway, you handled it all very well all things considered, ( esp that woman who keyed your car.) What an absolute bummer .
Thank you! :) When I made my van tour, that was Progressive I was paying $2000 for. Now I think it's like $600, but very disappointing they were so unhelpful. Insurance is the worst part of living in a van for me!
Maddie, it is ok to cry! Don’t be hard on yourself!❤️
Sometimes stress and frustration and a little bit of fear and anxiety come out in tears don’t be hard on yourself it’s always really aggravating when something like this happens but you’re a bad ass and you can do this
Aww thank you. So much 💜
Muss ich leidlich dichte und alles Liebe Grüße an alle und alles Liebe Grüße an alle ales ling
This video felt so real to me and you are really strong for sharing it. The part when the lady keyed your car really pissed me off! Anyways I am glad you made it thru and are in a better space. Please consider getting AAA is you havn't already. Otherwise having a car towed is a rip off
Sorry I missed replying to this! Thank you for the kind words!
Belated hugs
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces u really needed a hug.
Thank u sharing your life it's not all 🌈 rainbows and 🦄 unicorns. You are loved and appreciated .
The cry count was a good way to put a funny spin to your bad situation. You are great at looking for the silver lining. Blessings !
Thanks so much! :)
You were definitely NOT overreacting! That was stress piling on stress piling on stress, you handled it better than I would have!
Thank you! :)
Muss ich leidlich dichte und alles Liebe Grüße an alle und alles Liebe Grüße an alle und alles Liebe Grüße an
You were in a heightened state being on the side of the road in a very dangerous situation. I think your reaction was perfectly rational. You handled it and got through it. I am impressed. Chin up.☺️
Thank you!
We love you, Maddie❤️. You have a beautiful heart!
Love y'all too!!
I’m watching you hike the TA and you just burned yourself and still hiked! You have matured and are darn near fearless now!
Thank you for this! I definitely have been moving forward since then!
I am so glad you decided to post this! I knew everyone would be encouraging and supportive. We are rooting for you from all over. Can't wait to see the rest of the journey!
Thank you so much! I really appreciated your feedback and support!!
Your always awesome Maddie, life gets rough sometime, you held up better then most, glad your better!
Yes! Thank you!
I really appreciated this video. It was brave of you to put this up, and very helpful to those of us considering van life. We must anticipate things like this happening from time to time. Bob Wells always said that in van life, your lows and highs are both extreme and this was a good reminder of that.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Keep your chin up you're definitely the toughest person ever, and whatever life throws at you it's never gonna keep you down.❤
Also you lived in a van?! Haha I bet you got some epic stories and I definitely have some catching up to do on life before the AT..😂
I know how to change a flat tire, but remember these were “run flat” tires so I was told I wouldnt need a spare
You are doing the community a great service by posting this video. Countless are deceived by the endless rainbows and unicorns that van life represents on social media. Real life happens. Stay strong
Thank you!! Gotta keep it real!
You’re a ROCK STAR! You handled this situation so much better than I would have. Stay strong. Love your videos.
Thank you!
Oh Maddie you sweet girl! You handled that much better than I would have. I wish I could have given you a hug but we’re proud of you! ❤
You had me crying. I haven’t cried in years.
I am so sorry about the car troubles, yes it is normal to react the way you did. The feelings of being so so at the mercy of circumstances is so frustrating. Please know that you are precious and cared about.
Thanks so much, Dixie!
You make the best videos. ...real stuff. ...glad I found your channel.
I have to do everything alone. You did great!!!
Thank you!
That sounds so nice! I think the being nice when you’re stressed out part would be my favorite part!
HUGS!
You're amazing and really nice. It's a shame you went through that horror. You're a strong lady. Wishing you safe travels.
Hang in there. Love your videos. I have the same van. Keep smiling with that beautiful face.
Thank you! Will do!
Your videos are an inspiration to many people! I just started watching and can't get enough of your experiences. You're super brave for going out and experiencing the world like you are!
Thanks so much! This event happened a few months ago, but it already feels much longer, I'm really over it now!
I love your videos and your awesome personality.
Thanks!
If everyone was as independent an empathetic as you, the world would be a better place! I’m glad you were able to get through such a difficult part of the trip 👍
Thank you! This was the worst thing that happened while living in my van, and in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't that bad!
You always see things with a better perspective than most ❤
I’m so happy your parents helped you out with the hotel 🙏🏻 I wish I could have reached through my tv to give you a big old hug and tell you - this too shall pass and that you’ve got this 💪🏻 sending lots of love 💗
Thank you!! It really sucked to have to go through this, but now it feels like it happened a long time ago, even though it's been less than a year!
I know its 11 months late, but I cried with you.
Thank you! 💚
Sorry…glad that is behind you now! Back to the AT🙂🙏
And you absolutely weren’t overreacting. That was a super scary situation and you actually handled it like a boss.
Thank you!
i'm really sorry this happened to you but thank you for uploading this. this showcases the realities of van life, particularly the bumps (no pun intended) of it. it's great to explore new roads and such but when problems occur, they're way harder to fix on the road than in the safety of your own home.
Maddie, I think you did a wonderful job at moving through something difficult. 👏 Thank you for sharing even when you're unsure about how it will land. We love you 🏔❤️
Thank you so much!!
Best of luck on your journey, hope things work out
Thanks, Chad! Things are looking up now!!
And thank you for subscribing!
We watch every video and enJOY all of them. We are in our mid 60s
We have been where you are in the blow out video, we had just bought our first brand new car (1975)
Volks Rabbit. Diesel
And after 20 min on the road to our home (40 min) ride our brand new diesel car engine locked up with only 71 miles on it, we were 20 and 23 yrs old had just put down 1,000 on a 9,000 dollar car. And thought our world had ended, oh and it was also nearly midnight. We were able to call to leave an answering machine message for the dealer mechanic, to our surprise. The owner of the dealership answered!!
He agreed to send a tow truck and also to take 7s home
Those we're different times BUT he was still a great guy to do this after midnight
Please find it in yourself to keep going
You will never be sorry. Keep focusing on the positive
Watch your life events as IF they were a movie
And then simply ask...
" Ok. What's. Next! 🌹"
With a BIG Smile
Because one day you WILL Smile....
Luv YA girl! Life is real and you did well. You remind me of my daughter who also lives this same lifestyle.
Thank you! They’re usually a lot less dramatic than this, but I try to tell the whole story!
Since she was over the yellow lines she would’ve had to cover any damages however minor. You don’t have to be sorry Maddie. She’s in the wrong at all levels. that 1,400+ bill would’ve made most people at the least shed a tear.
Maddie,
I recently found your channel and have been watching you and I must say, you my dear are a bad ass.
Thank you!! As for carrying a spare tire, since I bought run flat tires I was told I didn’t need one. I did eventually get AAA after this!
Never let people push behind you let them go around
Sorry to see you so upset and having a bit of bad luck, would love to be there with you to help you get through this bad time but you are strong and will get through it yourself.
Thank you! 💪💙
Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond, but I appreciate all your well wishes! I got triple a now!
Hi Maddie, you are truly fun. Events like that is just part of that fun. Just ride it along and add them to the record. Pls. continue. Cheers.
I will! Thank you! 💙
I love your videos! You are awesome!
You made my bad day seem not so bad. I feel more exspierence with such situations will come easier.😊
Hi Maddie, haters gonna hate, unfortunately. Thank God most people are good and kind. You are an awesome person, always member that. If I can ever help just let me know, until then, Happy Trails
Thank you, John!
Keep being you Maddie❤️
Might take some stress off daily living.
Aww Maddie, I'm so sorry that you had such an awful experience. Hang in there or take a break, do whats right for you.
Thank you!!
I’ve had the best service through State Farm. I’m a life long customer. I would never go to another insurance company.
I'm watching because I'm right in there with you and your truthful
believe me, there are much worse things in life.
Maybe you could have just bought one regular tire and put it on the back temporarily a cheap tire I hope these tips help you in the future but don't give up
Thank you! Hopefully next time I’ll know what that sound is and look for a mechanic right away
Hurt people hurt people--love your videos😊
Thank you! 💙💙💙
I think you did the best you could in a pretty rough situation. Best thing is your safe
Thank you! That's really nice to hear!
I’m so sorry, u r very brave! I wouldn’t handle as good as u, I just wanted to giv u a big hug 🤗 when I saw u crying
Aww thank you! Hugs back!
Always carry a full size spare tire. Also get rid of them run flat tires they are junk. No worries though, glad you are better. live and learn hun.
This video breaks my heart!
💛 That was back in July, and while it sucked to go through, it seems distant now. I have that experience behind me and I’m proud I got myself through it
Maddie, sorry all this happened to a kind soul like yourself
Thank you, friend
This is where AAA is always good to have..
I wish I was there to hug you and fix that tire. I’m having motherly feelings for you!!!
I am so sorry you went through all this. You came out with a good attitude despite the adversity. Be well be safe and swing by DC and my wife and i will buy you a couple of local brews.
Haha thank you, I'll keep that in mind next time I'm out there!
Oooh my oh my, that's super awful, n timing too- 4th July weekend everything is busy or closed, especially mechanical. 😭😭
It was very unfortunate timing!
I know this nightmare all too well. Happened to me a couple of times in Lexington in college. Once at night in a bad location. Got lucky after walking to a gas station and waiting around and running into a tow truck stopping for gas.
Oh no! That sounds like no fun at all!
You should be thankful no one including yourself got hurt by the looks of that tire.
I would have been distraught
and crying too.
You can replace one ,
Has to be all 4 tires.
Excellent recovery " editing Maddy " 👍🏼 . You bounced back quickly. 🌻
Thank you! :) When I made my van tour, that was Progressive I was paying $2000 for. Now I think it's like $600, but very disappointing they were so unhelpful. Insurance is the worst part of living in a van for me!
