Dustin, you are probably one of the most knowledgeable reviewers on RUclips. The reviews are so on point and informative that we can use them as benchmarks while deciding what to invest in - cameras or lenses. Creatives like you make our lives easier by giving us such unbiased, clear and beautifully made reviews. Been following you for a while now and wanted to thank you for all the hard work you put into the craft!
First of all, I would like to say thank you, thank you for your lens reviews. At the same time, I take the liberty to make some suggestions. 1.Increase the sample pictures and extend the display time of each photo. 2.Reduce the footage of yourself, replace with close-up shot of the review object. Anyway, thank you for your video.
always a professional, thanks for your hard work sir. Have been watching your videos for several years now. You've influenced some of my best lens choices, one of them being the samyang/rokinon 50mm f1.2 for my a6000. Keep up the good work sir!
To get the best out of the lens I’d get the tripod collar. I have this lens and for macro type work decided the collar is a must. If you can get the lens on “special” then the price of the collar won’t hurt too much. Great review Dustin.
Another great review from the making of Mr Abbott! Thank you very much! Thanks to you I just bought this lens instead of my 70-200 G2 which is much heavier. I think it performs so close to the G2 that if you do not really need the 2.8 then there is no point in buying the G2. BTW I got the 000160 lens, this means I have the 160 lens that got out of there factory haha
The Tamron 70-210 F4 is a very good budget lens that can render beautiful images with rich colors. This lens reminds me of the old Minolta (beer can) 70-210 F4, which like the Tamron was able to focus closely to get macro like images of flowers and such. The Minolta was not as well corrected for CA but was quite sharp and offered a smooth bokeh. The Tamron 70-200 F2.8 G2 is in another class optically but beyond the budget of a cost conscience consumer. Thank you for another great review Dustin.
Just re-viewed this video. All of your videos provide a valuable resource, very likely for many years to come, considering the used lens market. -- Now I noticed you mentioned the lack of a focus limiter switch on this lens. I found that a quick twist of the manual focus ring in the right direction before using autofocus will help all lenses to focus quicker when shifting from near to far or vice versa. So for me a focus limiter is kind of a luxury item...
Good seeing Canon and Nikon getting some competition. I am a Canon guy but am seriously considering the Tamron given the price difference and the fact that I would not be using this lens all the time.
Excellent review as always!! thank You!! I'd a short trail and have also experienced the same focus problems and a relatively weak VC (i own the fantastic 100-400 VC)
It does work fairly well, though initial focus speed in AF-C mode isn't super fast. Once it is closer it focuses quickly. It focuses very accurately via the MC-11
In general at 200mm which one performs better Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD (A034) OR Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (A035N) Lens? My purchasing decision depends on your answer. Thanks.
Hey Dustin, Very nice insight to this lens. You also reviewed the Canon 70-300 IS II USM lens also. If image quality is concerned how much difference between the canon 70-300 IS II USM and this lens? I know that this lens is superior in physical construction. My primary usage will be in landscape photography
colton cyr I use it for landscape and much more. It is an amazing lens and even at fast driving trains or cars the AF is good (but sometimes the AF is wrong, max 5% or less).
Stefan M I just recently tested this lens out, and I am shocked the quality was pretty amazing even on these 5300/5500 cameras. I haven’t owned anything this size so it’s a little awkward for me but I think I’m going to buy it and up my game!!
Thanks Dustin for a nice review, based on your findings I think I will be waiting for the new Canon lenses or maybe the G2 version of this lens I do own the older Tamron 70-200 F2.8 DI VC USD on apsc but I’m looking to use a 70-200 F2.8 or F4 on my 6D mark II with a newer version of these lenses as the older version that I mentioned previously is not perfect on my 6D II oh well choices choices!!! Thanks again Cheers from the province of Québec!!!
Soon people will forget the company lens and will go for third party lenses. Tamron and sigma being the leaders in third party lenses. I too love Tamron lens's quality.... what do ya say
Dustin Abbott Thanks for your prompt response dear if you don't mind, need your opinion on bokeh & build quality of this 70-210 f4 vs 70-200 G2 (is G2 worthy of further spending 500 USD more? Autofocus speed isn't on priority will be using it in weddings or portraits ) thanks again :)
Rev. Abbott, as always, nice work.. For my use, I'm satisfied with my choice of a used Canon f/4 lens in both quality and price.. If you would share with us, what's next..??
Unfortunately I've not really spend any time with either of them in that configuration. I suspect the best solution is coming soon - a Tamron 70-300mm lens for Sony FE.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks for your reply. Not sure what happened to my previous reply. The reason for my question, is that thes two lenses can be had really cheaply now so im curious as to which one you would pick if they were the same price. Lets say you could get either of these for about $450, which would you pick? assume you are picking it for a canon full frame camera.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks. I have the Tamron and just did the firmware up. I love how light it is as well. Hopefully I'll be able to get out and test it out properly. Thanks again
If I take a picture with this lens at the highest resolution (24mpx in my cam) and I just crop the image, will I have the same result as a 70 200? will I get a huge difference in quality, or a decent result? (Sorry, but I´m stingy and dont want to buy more lenses LOL)
Dustin Abbott with due respect. Would you suggest me. I am low on budget. Which one is better for birding? Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 or Tamron 70-210mm f4? I have a D3300 with a nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6g. Looking forward to buy a fixed aperture lens. Thank you.
Does Canisonikon ever wonder why no one buys their junky optional tripod collars? They cost as much or in some cases more than an RRS one. Latter being designed for the arca-swiss system.
Dustin Abbott Agreed. But the Canon 70-200 F/4s are lighter than the FF Canon bodies or even a 7DM2. Do you need a tripod collar if the body outweighs the lens?
"Do you need" is not the point. Need it or not, objectively, "first party" lens collars lack functionality when compared to offerings by companies such as Tamron, RRS, Kirk, etc. There's still advantages of using a collar on a light lens, what if I want to mount it on a gimbal head? What if I want to keep the parallax under control for stitching? What if I'm using an automated rail where balancing is crucial? In many cases, yes, I like many others do need the collar. That's the stuff I do. My light MF 200mm lens doesn't have a collar, so I went out and made one myself just to have it balanced perfectly.
Macro Cosmos for a light lens like the ones we're discussing, since stress on the mount isn't an issue, I think an L-bracket is a better option. I'm in the market for one myself.
Thx 4 the review. I am just torn by a thought which one 2 buy; this one or C70-200 f4 L EF usm, both of similar price. VC is what is making me lean towards Tamron ...
Thanks for the review@@DustinAbbottTWI! I'm in the same boat as Mario. Tamron 70-210 F4 VC vs the Canon 70-200 F4 L (non-IS) since they're closer in price recently. I'm looking to adapt to the Sony A6500 via Sigma MC-11. With IBIS on the Sony 6500, do you think the VC on the Tamron is necessary/helpful?
It probably would work better than the IBIS (lens-specific), but definitely less of a factor if you are shooting on Sony. I haven't tested the Canon lens on an a6500, so I can't really say how they would compare when adapting. I suspect the Tamron AF will probably work a little better as it is so much newer.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Dustin ! Having followed your advice, I bought Tamron 70-210 f4 DI VC USD today ! I am glad you answered my questions here and there ! Thank you !!!
Tamron has issued a firmware update to fix the autofocus issues I delineate in this episode. See my coverage of that here: bit.ly/A034firm2

hello Dustin. You've adapted the lens to a Sony body...can you please tell wich adapter was used?
I used a Sigma MC-11 for this lens.
Dustin Abbott thank you very much.

Weight, size, and expense.

Third parties have seriously made headway.
Thanks Dustin for a great review I would like to ask if 100-400mm Tamron is on par optically with this 70-210 f4 in the same focal lengths ?
I would say yes, though at smaller aperture values.

I'm working on a comparison between the FE version of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART and a Canon EF one + MC-11 adapter.
Hi Dustin, for landscape photography: is 70-210 4 vc good enouph? or it makes sense to look towards others 70-200? thanks!
Definitely. You won't really see an advantage from an F2.8 lens for landscape work. This lens makes a lot of sense because of the lighter weight.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Does it make sense to overpay for canon 70 - 200 4 is? i mean image quality.
The 70-200L IS II is a great lens (my favorite in the class), but the Tamron isn't much behind. It depends on your budget.

I'd probably go with the Tamron - the fixed F4 aperture makes for a bit higher end images.
Hi Dustin, has Tamron issued a firmware update to alleviate the AF racking issues?
They have - I highlight it here: bit.ly/A034firm2
Thanks!
How would you rate this Tamron lens compared to the Canon 70-200 F4 IS version 1?
I would say the Tamron is a bit sharper and the VC is much quieter in operation.

If this lens is sharper over the Nikon push pull 80-200mm f2.8 that i own then i definitely go for it...Is anyone use this two lenses?
Which lence you use during seating and making this video ?
That information is at the end of all of my reviews.
