Informative as always. I had a school trip there as a wee laddie and remember being amazed at the ancient threadbare penants and flags hanging above from battles, a story on their own.
I visited Edinburgh back in July on a bus tour of Europe. I became a fan of your videos to familiarize myself with Edinburgh before the trip. You were quarantined with covid while I was there, so any chance of crossing paths with you couldn't happen. Interestingly enough, John Knox is my 11x Great-grandfather on my mother's side. Getting to visit his grave/parking spot was a highlight! Now you know you have relatives in Knoxville, Tennessee! Love your videos and love to go back and visit Edinburgh again!
Just saying hey! In Edinburgh and wanted to try haggis but didn't know where to find The Haggis Box as the the Tolbooth Market is closed. Well, on our way back to our flat from a wonderful Rabbie's West Highland tour, we walked past the John Knox house. I just happened to look left and saw The Haggis Box sign. It was perfect. We had haggis with neeps and tatties. Laura served us herself. She is so warm and personable. I'm excited because it was on the top of my list of things to do. If you're in Edinburgh on the Royal Mile go down the mile and the reading center just past the John Knox house has The Haggis Box. One of the best meals we've had this trip. Thanks Tony!
It's called the Storytelling Centre
If you ever get the chance to go into the law courts of the old Scottish Parliament at the rear of St Giles Tony, you really need to grad it!!
When i was an Edinburgh motorcyle courier back in the 90's every so often i'd get a delivery that had to be hand delivered to the recipient, usually a QC, and i'd have to hunt him down within the building.... most of the QC's and the rest were pompous idiots but they put up with me because i was carrying an important document (needless to say i had no idea what was in the letter but the fact i was there, they knew) (pre-electronic transfer days).... there's a massive hall in there that always left me speechless, from the outside you have no idea it even exists!
The hall was so overbearing that i couldn't get out fast enough... looking back now i do wonder what scared me about it? LOL
Edinburgh is such a fascinating place with hidden gems everywhere, often in plain sight.
so many wonderful facts about this magnificent church wow and love it and so beautiful, and breath taking Cathedral wow.
We get to finally see this next week!!! So excited. Thanks for the preview! ❤
It truly is a wonderful place to see. The acoustics, stained glass, pipe organ, side nooks, and statuary are breathtaking. If you wish to take images, there is a small fee to pay. No flash. It's worth it.
I hadn’t known that the church had been divided up, but it kind of makes sense: many, many years ago in my greenwood days, my friend and I, on our first trip to Scotland, went there to worship one Sunday morning, and were confused, as it seemed to have pews in several sections, facing different directions. We found a section and seated ourselves. A few minutes later, we were solemnly led away to a different pew: we had unwittingly chosen to sit in the choir stalls! ☺️☺️☺️
Like the Scot Monument and so many other buildings in Edinburgh the Architecture of St. Giles is stunning. As a Builder by trade that was the first thing to capture my interest in Edinburgh. Throw in the people and their sense of humor..... it's why I come back again and again.
I loved that tour, Tony!
Usually, I travel alone, reading all the material to the places I visit, but it is undeniably 100% more fun, to have you, as a guide 😃
hello from Denmark 🌸🌱
My husband and I were visiting Edinburgh the week following the Queen's passing. We wanted so badly to visit St. Giles Cathedral and had to wait until it reopened late in the week. It is so beautiful inside. Everyone should visit this amazing Kirk. Thank you for giving us some more history. We have enjoyed your Vlogs so much.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos and look forward to them every week. Thank you !!
Hi introduced myself to you the day you were filming. Your videos have enhanced my trip to Scotland. Thank you so much for your wonderful information about your beautiful city!
You are so welcome!
8:05 it astounds me how blue the sky in Scotland is. I have photos at the Wallace Monument like this and the blue sky looks photoshopped. Never seen anything like it.
Legend has it, true or not?... St Andrew looked up at the sky and saw a white cross of clouds on the blue sky and so the flag of Scotland was born... The St Andrews Cross.
Whether that's true or not i don't know, all i do know is you and the rest of the world missed a treat during the first wave of the virus when flights were all but grounded.... no sky trails, no traffic noise, clear blue skies... as much as it was all missed it was a majestic sight for those of us lucky enough to be working, looking up really was amazing, as was just standing still for a moment to take in how different everything was.
A lady pointed out to me there are two angels with bagpipes in the thistle chapel, had fun finding them. Such a gorgeous building with a warm sounding organ.
I was there in May, and it was a thrill to see this beautiful cathedral again, this time decorated for the Queen. I loved hearing the Scottish ministers, and the music was exceptional. Thank you for all the interesting facts!
Very interesting Tony. St. Giles is an incredible building and I always find it somewhat therapeutic, popping in there to escape the hustle and bustle outside. By the way, 'Angels with Bagpipes' - I always wondered where that Royal Mile restaurant got its name from!
Great video as usual. When we visited we never went in. One of the things I’ll definitely do when we come back🎉. Keep up the great work Tony.
Informative! I hope to travel to Edinburg soon. Your videos will acquaint me with the city beforehand.
Just curious... If there was cemetary, which is now a car park, how did they do that?? Did they just pave over the graves ? Or did they move the bodies first ?? Edinburgh is like that, pretty much in a lot of places. The Meadows, & that little street called, The Mound... I heard it was bcz of so many ppl died during the beubonic plague, at one time, they didn't have time to bury ppl with a normal gravesite & funeral.
It is built in Neo Gothic style.
Dogs are allowed in this church and there is a story about that too.
Relics is the more appropriate word rather than parts of a saint.
Love your videos.
John Knox is my 11th Great Grandfather. Greetings from America 🎉
My direct ancestor as well.
This is the site of the start of the war of the 3 crowns (more commonly known as the English civil war.)
St Giles' Cathedral was founded in 1124. It's Edinburgh's historic heart, where Queen Elizabeth’s coffin lies at rest.
When I was there 10 years ago, you could take photos if you paid a small fee. Not sure about video
But as I understand it, there are no cathedrals in the Presbyterian tradition. He's just made the point. It's the High Kirk - the High Church of Scotland.
I read that the steeple is a reproduction of the Scottish crown. Is that true?
Interesting, I'm also a direct descendant of John Knox my mother's maiden name is Knox.
Also, whatever person or program does the closed captioning has apparently never heard the word "Giles". It says "St Charles cathedral" and "St John's" 😆
There is a special guest list if u wanted to get married within for my mum an stepdad got married within
Scarlet witch and vision destroyed a bit of Edinburgh if I remember
Pre-covid you could film inside is you dropped some money in the donation box.
