  • In this episode of Fresh Tracks season 8, Randy Newberg is bowhunting for bugling bulls in the steep mountains of Montana. Joining him are Karrson and Andrew from Gerber Gear as well as a group of llamas from Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas.
They are backpacking 7 miles in with all of their camping gear hoping to find the elk and stay on them. The terrain is steep rocky and covered in thick timber. But with good elk numbers in the area, Randy hopes to be able to put the guys on a couple bulls.
The hunting is tough as they encounter some pressure from other hunters. Remaining flexible they keep going to fall back plans and finally are able to get on a couple good stalks. Being able to glass up a mature bull they hope to sneak in close and call him into within archery range.

I hope these Gerber boys will be back again. This has become a revenge/rivalry with these elk for these guys! My hopes are always high watching them. They need to get something down and show us some sweet knife work! Keep the content coming Randy!

What a great hunt! Those young men will always remember it and continue "the hunt" knowing it's not always about harvesting the animal, it's about the love and respect of the Great Outdoors!

I see you are hunting the same terrain and elevation I used to bowhunt. I cant belelive how much crap you are carrying on your backs. I used to have a fanny pack with my water, power bars and knives and marking tape, compass, flashlight, batteries. Camera sometimes. We didnt have cell phone/gps in the 90s 🤣 nor range finder. Still fun to watch you guys with my chips on the couch 😅 . You guys went through same things I went through. I think those elk are spooky in burn areas since the cover is mostly gone. Wind shifts have burned me lots of times. I was fortunate to get a bull 8 years in a row with the bow. No monsters, but worth every foot step and in Gods country.

Curious - I know you’re having a blast out west and all, but do you ever get back to Minnesota to hunt too? I don’t know what the TV producer types think, but I for one would actually enjoy a bit more of relatively “ordinary” hunts for stuff like deer, grouse, or even squirrel in the north woods to have some more “relatable” settings along with the western stuff. (I’m in Minnesota myself, so it’d be fun to see how you approach the same stuff I’d be doing.)

Proof that just because you have a bugle tube is alot like, just because you have a driver's license doesn't mean you're a good driver, but it'll get you better points A and B.
Love the videos and have been following Randy for many years, but nothing worse than being around elk and having someone running around the mountain screaming relentlessly on a tube.

Geez, horses and llamas... I archery hunted deer and elk in Western WA, and packed 35lbs of gear, plus my heavy, cumbersome crossbow (I'm disabled) - and still got my animals! It was painful, but exhilarating! I've wanted to use a horse, but the guys I hunted with didn't. They returned to poaching. SMH Reports to WDFW goes ignored - "Thanks, but not enough field guys." This hunt reminds me a bit of hunting in Kodiak. Harder in WA with all the felled logs covered with undergrowth.

I am happy for you to have the opportunity of those wilderness hunts. Here in Germany we have Good hunting too, but it's not as connected to nature any more. More like driving to a highseat and shooting from an upholstered Bench;-)

Randy, All the commercial interruptions really screw up the flow of the video. I don't know how it works, do you guys set the commercial breaks in the video or does RUclips? Whoever does it, there's way too many. I was watching and at one point they were spaced about 3 minutes apart. Love your videos when I can get focused on them and share in the emotion. Not so much on this one.
