Ooohh that's tough and I totally get that struggle. I think My Love Story, Honey Lemon Soda, and A Sign of Affection wouldn't raise any flags for the,.
"Like a Butterfly" by Suu Morishita should be okay also. It's a modern day high school romance about a girl who is super shy. "No Matter What You Say Furi-san is Scary!" is a super wholesome modern day high school first love comedy about a girl who appears to be a delinquent and the boy she has a crush on who always misunderstands her. (actually, this might not be a shojo, but I recommend it regardless). It's been a while, but anything by Io Sakisaka should be ok. Modern day high school romances with a lot of growing up angst. If you don't mind historical romance (something along the lines of Jane Austen) "True Love Fades When the Contract Ends" is about nobles fake-dating in order to get peace and quiet. If some magic is ok, "The Fiancé Chosen by the Ring", which is a wholesome kingdom fantasy with a very heavy romance plot. Hopefully these give you some more options, good luck!

I met up with some nerdy friends this summer at our old state university - of course my one friend joked about how we will never get an ending to X! She at one point in time had all the tankobon lined up on her bookshelf waiting to complete that giant image that we'll never get. Even popped in the old comic shop right across the street from old state university where lo and behold, several old single volumes of X/1999 reminded with a slew of Tokyo Pop titles that were there when I was a student. Not like I'm still here waiting for more of Lawful Drug . . . I definitely learned about Asuka b/c I am a huge CLAMP fan, but of their smaller works like Wish and Lawful Drug. I had incorrectly assumed that RG Veda ran in it since it would have fit that vibe being such an overall dark and violent story. CLAMP, I love you but could go at least get around to tying up some of your loose ends. And the mention of Animerica Extra - hell, I remember buying individual issues of Animerica as well. With all these anime reboots of the moment, there is a small young part of me that wants a high quality remake of Weiss Kreuz for the sheer fan girl cheese factor. I know it was a complete VA driven project for the anime but with updated tech it would be pretty slick.

(a horror series with 2 male protagonists) I also find its history with Bandai interesting, id love to do some research and find out how they came to publish tie ins to stuff like Bebop and Geass. Its just a really interesting magazine to me and im happy were slowly getting more from it in English. Great video as always, cant wait for the next magazine deep dive!! Manga demographics make no sense to me. 2 mangas which share a very similar premise (gender-y school romances) are Stop Hibari-kun and Senpai wa Otokonoko, but Hibari is a shounen and painoko is a josei which are literally opposites despite being quite similar. Berserk took inspiration from shoujo manga for its character relationships, and the Dark Souls game director Hidetaka Miyazaki is also inspired by shoujo (see Deracine) Meanwhile stuff like Eizouken and Witch Hat Atelier are both seinen??? I am stupid
It's quite easy once you can start discerning story beats common between all the demos, what the focus is more on (action, plot, character dynamics, interior emotions), intended audience, art style and paneling, or even just marketing of the manga (who is on the covers, the colors, etc). Genres and demographics are two different things. EDIT: also relevant and I forgot to add, Senpai is an Otokonoko is a web series and more specifically a Webtoon. Those don't always have outwardly stated demos like traditional magazines and don't usually follow the same styles of art or paneling either.
So, I have a question. A few interrelated questions, actually. Firstly, did what happened at the end of the video really happen? Secondly, was it a certain "trash" related podcast? Thirdly, did it feature a certain person who calls themself a certain Anime Person? And fourthly, did one of the other people call themselves something with Gig in it? Or was this all part of the skit? I would like to know. Thanks!
Mother's Basement is more shoujo-positive than the others here. please colleen I need shoujo manga recs with some romance in them that I as a 15yo guy can get past my parents in an extremely conservative household where they monitor my purchases 😭
Hopefully these give you some more options, good luck!
yay new video!! always excited to see what you have to share
The scream I scrumt at 00:15 😭💀
Your bits never fail to make me smile. As someone who's been getting into more different manga recently this video will be a goldmine!
We need to get colleen on the trash taste podcast
Now THAT is a great idea. We gotta make this happen.
The only person in the trash taste bubble that I'd like to see Colleen talk manga with is Syd. They have very different tastes but are my 2 favorite reviewers and would probably have an interesting conversation.
I couldn't handle the psychic damage it would cause me. Though if Colleen had a collab with a shonen-focused creator that actually has a good chance of being open to it and not obnoxious towards them, then that would rule.
Moto Hagio AND CLAMP?! Nuff said! Plus a Rose of Versailles-inspired girlprince drama? Yes please!
Kiss of the Rose princess was my very first manga ever that I confusedly bought on iBooks on an iPad with a gift card in middle school and then proceeded to read out of order. Suffice it to say I was very confused but interested lol
x, d.n. angel, kiss of the rose princess.... and others that made me squeal (read the first 2 I mentioned back in hs, discovered other shoujo titles there too)
The introductory skits are getting more immaculate ✨️
i absolutely love the video but i did think there would be a lot more talk about bebop 😭 at the very least though i’m totally checking out asuka and the bebop manga now
I'm sorry I had to clickbait a little 😔😔😔
@@ColleensMangaRecsI'm sorry, it's definitely not a little😂
I miss the reverse harem era of shoujo so much, we don't get bishounen after bishounen on chapter covers. Also, I'm cackling at how the person talking about "peak fiction" is wearing a Demon Slayer shirt when it is a shallow speedrun of a "shounen to-do list" + nice character designs
@@nozomisouffle Kimetsu no Yaiba is what happens when you get JJK a good character design. Still a YuuYuuHakusho wannabe and very bad at that, but at least you can look at good designs while in jjk you don't even have that
Sadly reverse harem can't have true harem ending, and the anime adaptation of reverse harem genre is mostly horrendous
@@yunfeikwon Well. Maybe not an animation, but why don't you do a light novel, or blast me! even a manga about it ?
@@definitivamenteno-malo7919 most shoujo fans especially the romance lover one hates reverse harem with passion. That's why reverse harem is niche of niche genre that ever existed. That's why even manga featuring them is rare nowadays and always have one endgame ML with very obvious hint who it is (99% always the first introduced ML). Idk about the LN side but they never have true harem ending for some reasons.
@@yunfeikwon But still, you could do it and inspire more people to do it.
Even it could be a precedent from someone sort of political plot going on. Things like that can be excellent catalysts for very interesting stories that phew people thought about
I love Asuka, thanks for highlighting it!!
Good video, Eccentric Doctor is one of my fav Seven Seas titles and is what initially made me aware of Asuka. I’d like to shout out Tales of the Abyss: Tsuioku no Jade-A Tales of the Abyss spin-off manga that ran in the magazine. It fleshes out some backstory details from the game and is worth checking out
I met up with some nerdy friends this summer at our old state university - of course my one friend joked about how we will never get an ending to X!
I started reading mainly shounen, when I was 23. Now that I am almost 29 i go toward shoujo and josei and I am here for it and for your channel obviously 😝
Another heater magazine breakdown 🎉 X is so full of scene kid nostalgia it's great!
I'm gonna check out The Sword of Paros this weekend 🙌
Enjoy!! It's shot up to like my top 5 fave manga after reading.
Im so happy you did a video on Asuka!!!! I discovered it a while back while looking into Yen Presss recent licenses and its a really cool magazine. Even with the current pivot towards romance series (as is the current shoujo trend) its a really diverse magazine with a little bit for everyone. Its got romance like Momochi House, Hachioji Speciality and Love Love Shitai (really hoping we get that in english), drama like Mr.Mallow Blue and Dawn Dance, fantasy like Luciole Had a Dream and Aria of the Beech Forest, supernatural like Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls and Foggy Foot, and even some oddballs like Sharakuna. (would love to see something on Kodanshas shoujo magazines like Nakayoshi, Desert or Betsufre, even if just to show all the stuff Kodansha USA wont give us lol)
Asuka magazine is one of my favorites so I'm happy to see you talking about them!!
I honestly forgot the whole mecha aspect of Code Geass lmao. Because of the similar art styles and overlapping run dates, I think my brain just interprets Code Geass as an extension of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle.
Also, I've never heard of it but Sword of Paros looks amazing!
X and Saiunkoku Monogatari are up there with my all-time favorite series. RIP Tokyopop
I accidentally clicked but I'm so happy I did. I'm a little late to the game but this made me excited to go read these works, even the unfinished ones. Great video!
The trash bucket is so on point lol
cackling at the regurgitated cowboy bebop video essay word salad, because that's *literally* how people talk about some series
Lmao I love your channel! This was everything. ⭐️💕💕💕 my nostalgia feels went crazy and we got end credits! 3 cheers for Colleen indeed. 😭😂
I've never heard about this magazine but it seems exactly like something I'd like. I mean my favorite shoujo anime is Banana Fish and I'm not a fan of non-live-action het romance stuff ^^
This is the shojo I like! This is what got me into anime and manga! Tokyo pop was where I got most of my manga from!
Every video of yours is a banger but this one takes the cake! So good! And I found more manga to read, thank you
Faye Valentine said -yes is a Shoujo and im the Main and the Last Bounty Hunter that is on this Bussiness yet,i need more new Stories.
Ofcourse its shojo. It takes place in the same canon as Carole & Tuesday
@@lewa3910 Is Space Dandy also a Shoujo?
The intro is hilarious lmao another excellent video
Dudebros are NOT going to like this
OMG I really really trully love your videos, I always get to expand my knowledge on something that's so close to my heart as shoujo and LMAO with the last beat, at first I was a bit hesitant if you were referencing them but then, lol cherry on top for such a great video
That ending! 😆 I love you 💖 Great video! THREE CHEERS FOR COLLEEN
Need more of the Gumption podcast + Colleen expeditiously
I know about the old OVA of the Heroic Legend of Arslan (its good), but didn't know a shoujo adaptation existed. Thanks for the info!
Omg I loved kiss of the rose princess, iconic OG
Hello fellow old folks who also remember "glomping".
omg that skit 😭👏 i immediately thought of TT when i saw it on twitter sdfnjk realizing how many titles i added from asuka to read this autumn... have you ever thought of creating a new series, here or on twitter, recommending mangas for the season? would love to know your recommendations!
Peak opening skit. Goodness all those tokyopop titles.
aaaa, this is the first i've seen someone mention paros no ken, definitely a favourite manga of mine: the art is sTuNnInG

「アオのハコ」は少女マンガ的ですが少年ジャンプ作品です。
Loved the gag for this video! I watch the trash taste podcast and this parody is spot on 😂
I was trying to figure out why I recognized Asuka Comics... and then you mentioned DNAngel. UGH I AM SUCH A HUGE DNANGEL FAN. Partly because it was one of the first manga I read so it's very dear to my heart!
9:06 it does have ovas, the second one became a pretty notorious case of anime lost media (kenny lauderdale was searching for it)
The intro is surely on point. Mostly because, as a person who read manga for like 30 years, it buzzes me how those guys can identify manga only if it's Shounen Jump series from the last 5 years...
im fucking crying i love your skits so much omfg. the ending had me rolling
I love these skits lmaooo
I genuinely love how many original tv anime tie ins they've done. So many beloved characters and stories have gotten the shoujo writing treatment
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic days says hi😉
@@alexlovessamoyeds is it a shoujo too?
Asuka gave me X, Asuka is everything.
Preach
Hana no asuka-gumi actually did get an anime adaptation in the form of two ovas.
I know who the opening gag is about…and I love it because they all annoy the hell out of me.
made it a little obvious at the end.... lol
@@ColleensMangaRecs all I’ll say is, it’s apparent when they (dudebro anitubers in general) ran out of shounen stuff to talk about because i saw one talk about nana, and wow was it obvious he never read shoujo or josei and much of it flew over his head (nana is pretty blunt about its messages imo).
Interesting video today 😁👍
Asuka ✨️✨️✨️ I miss the CLAMP covers of the X/1999 era
Betrayal knows my name!!! I haven't heard that one in *years*
Excellent parody intro. Best to think of shoujo, shounen, josei & seinen genre labels as guides rather than unalterable laws as stories can go anywhere and limiting yourself to only one of these will have you missing out on a lot.
mention of DNAngel slapped me with nostalgia omg
Cowboy Bebop have gone Woke?!
Ayo I found the first volume of D.N.Angel at a booksale!
I want more of the Gumption podcast. It should be a recurring skit, like the Nerd Crew is for Redlettermedia.
19:37 LIKO MENTIONED OHHHHHHH
There's one other ciao shoujo oneshot by Kahori Orito that adapted the first 3 episodes of new pokemon anime and I'd kill for it to be long running series 😭 like we finally got girl protagonist in anipoke series she's like the shoujo icon of pokemon
5:47 yes, it does provide something for me big shoujo magazines usually don't
and as a fujo, asuka has a lot of titles with bishounen cast, which, while not being bl, is adjacent to my bl interests, huhu
upd. it does have a bl spinoff magazine, huh, it's first i'm hearing that but it makes sense honestly (and it had junjou romantica and love stage? crazyy)
upd2. it also has color recipe 💀
The way I immediately stop drawing the moment you mention DN Angel I haven't heard that series name in decades aljkfdlsadfjk
unrelated but related: tokyopop is back right? i've seen some of their new publications, does anyone know why and or how it came back?
This reminds me, that I thought Witch Hat Atwlier was so good it was a shoujo, not a seinen lmao
it’s written by a woman so it gets a pass!
@@ryannthegawd Let's say it's shojosei in disguise! lol
the fact that I knew exactly who you were mimicking TvT you were on point
May I ask who?
@@titoleon3101 I know for sure one is the anime man
I used to follow him but there was one take he had that left a sour taste in my mouth
@@impsail374 Really? Wow, I could never stand that guy nor his podcast and purged him out of my socials ages ago. Thats why I didnt recognize him.
@@titoleon3101 real 😭 unfortunately the first time I got into anime I watched him and a few other problematic anime tubers. I was pretty young and naive but I know better than to follow people like that now 🥲
Who could look at the designs of Code Geass characters and not think it's shoujo?
THREE CHEERS FOR COLLEEN ❤❤❤
"D.N.Angel might seem familiar to you..." *Looks at her manga / DVD box set / Bluray box set*
Oh... maybe. 😅 ..... Now that I think about it... did they ever translate the final volumes because the hiatus made me depressed and I stop checking after a while...
they did not 😭
@ColleensMangaRecs 😭
Time to finish Cowboy Bebop hahah
idk If colleen does cookie magazine yet I really interest in them but I only know NANA
Well, considering that most of the manga or manhwa I like have female characters with significant narrative influence...
2:08 Well, considering most of Spike's actions are because he fell in love...
21:08
Do you think you’ll ever make a video about Tokyo pop?
Most likely!!
I dream of the day that Saiunkoku Monogatari will get it's 23 LN translated to English.... I totally haven't started learning Japanese just to read this series... *sips tea* 😭
BTW, how can anyone say Code Gueass be the best mecha anime? I mean, it's kinda good, but
hehehehehe.... I can imagine the seething anger from the other side...
Manga demographics make no sense to me. 2 mangas which share a very similar premise (gender-y school romances) are Stop Hibari-kun and Senpai wa Otokonoko, but Hibari is a
shounen and painoko is a josei which are literally opposites despite being quite similar.
Berserk took inspiration from shoujo manga for its character relationships, and the Dark Souls game director Hidetaka Miyazaki is also inspired by shoujo (see Deracine)
Meanwhile stuff like Eizouken and Witch Hat Atelier are both seinen???
Mayu shinjo mentioned 😂😂😂😂😂
So, I have a question. A few interrelated questions, actually. Firstly, did what happened at the end of the video really happen? Secondly, was it a certain "trash" related podcast? Thirdly, did it feature a certain person who calls themself a certain Anime Person? And fourthly, did one of the other people call themselves something with Gig in it? Or was this all part of the skit? I would like to know. Thanks!
Mother's Basement is more shoujo-positive than the others here. He just doesn't seem to read much manga in general but he watchs almost every anime he can get his hands on and speaks positively on most shoujo anime adaptations that have been coming out. The shoujo usually make it on his seasonal recc list or get honorable mention. Trash Taste and Gigguk don't branch out much at all though.
@@PredictableEnigma I see! i was wondering! I do love mother's basement! As he seems to be more willing to branch out than some other male animetubers
