As a male person and not a targeted demographic, I do dip into shoujo manga occasionally because sometimes shoujo has the FUNNIEST shit. Ther are tracks of shoujo (or josei) humor that simply do not cross over into a male person's brain, cognitive or otherwise. The insanely funny but criminally under-appreciated "My Heavenly Hockey Club" (how dare they only released 8 volumes in English?) The anime "3-Nen D-Gumi Glass no Kamen" almost sent me to the hospital (the Helen Keller episode KILLED). But my personal favorite shoujo mangaka is still Azuki Yuu ("Shouwa Aho Akanuke Ichiban", "Iga no Kabamaru", some of her dirty josei shorts)... The woman may not be a 49er, but she also started in the late 70s and is now in her 70s.... might still be working in fact. It's not just the goofy faces of her casts, male or female young or old human or animal (especially them horses), there's just something deeply subversive and disturbing about her humor, her stories, her drawing style, yet without sloping into the dark. Just cracks me the hell up.

So glad to see more Sukeban Deka representation. I immediately loved it ever since I first read it, and the live action show is even more amazing. It's crazy to me how unknown it is in the West considering its popularity in Japan.
Some parts of the later story would not go well today but I really hope it gets its well deserved official english release one day along with Glass Mask (who btw also had a crossover chapter with Sukeban Deka, Suzue Miuchi in the role of the antagonist hahah)!

@gracequeeney3399 I was being ironic. I'm well aware that it's a big reason people refuse to read it. Which is unfortunate because in my personal library it's a certified hood classic. And honestly, I kind of respect Kaori for cutting the bull crap that a lot of other works have. How many incest series are out there like Eromanga Sensei and My Little Sister Can't be This Cute? She just ran with it.

Everyones talking about the rap (rightfully so) but the Property Brothers joke killed me i did not expect that
Anyways, yaaaaayyyy i was hoping youd do a video on Hana to Yume!!! I love this magazine, its a hard tie between this and LaLa for my favorite shoujo magazine (makes sense theyre sister magazines) they have so many good and iconic series. I agree with you that its variety is one of its best attributes, not everything has to be a traditional romance or even have a female lead. It can have fantasy stuff, comedies with child protagonists, BL (New York New York being in this magazine AND sharing a mangaka with Baby & Me was a geniune shock to me), supernatural romcoms etc......theres a little bit for everyone which allows it to have a wide appeal. Probably the best variety of all the major shoujo magazines, maaaybe all current shoujo magazines? Asukas pretty good too and i havent looked enough into some of the lesser known ones like Princess and Bonita. I agree that it does a great job at multi mediarizing its big properties (Hana-Kimi JUST got an anime announced and im very excited!) but another big thing is that a lot from the magazine is avaliable in english! Not everything sadly (im hoping someone rescues Gakuen Alice or releases physicals for the Comikey exclusive series) but a good amount and i think that also helps get eyes on their stuff and keeps them releavent. Its just overall a fantastic magaazine and i hope it continues to grow strong and keep going! Great video as always, cant wait for the next magazine retrospective! (since you mentioned it briefly maaaybe Nakayoshi next?)

As a huge fan of New York, New York AND Gakuen Babysitters, I have to check out Baby and Me! You've mentioned it in videos before but I never realized it was Ragawa's work! It's always great to see the intertwined history of BL and Shojo in these deep dive videos. This whole deep dive really speaks to the diversity of Hana to Yume as a magazine. And speaking of queer manga, I'm SO excited for the upcoming Awajima Hyakkei anime!! It's a josei yuri manga by the mangaka of Wandering Son! Shojosei Yuri is on the rise and I couldn't be more hype!!! (Sorry I'll stop leaving comments now 😭 hopefully it feeds the algorithm monster!)

And thank you for mentioning Love So Life!! It was super important for teen me. If you accept video suggestions, I would like to learn more about child-rearing manga. Loved this video!! Fruits Basket may have been my introduction to the magazine without me even knowing it at the time and one of the most formative series for me as a young girl, but Hana to Yume carries just so many of my nostalgic shojo loves alongside seminal classics. The previously mentioned Fruits Basket, but also Please Save My Earth, Glass Mask, Baby & Me, Kamisama Kiss, NG Life, Love So Life, S.A., Twinkle Stars, etc...
I also remember around 2018/2019 buying the JP digital issues of the magazine on Hakusensha's e-store all the time to keep up with/support Yona of the Dawn, The World is Still Beautiful, & Collette Decides to Die specifically, while occasionally checking out some of the other titles listed at the time like Furare Girl. Clearly their efforts to expand consumer options worked on me at least haha

I'm a soon to be mangaka that have been mostly reading gekiga, shonen and seinen, and not much of it, because it's tiresome as fuck how (with some exceptions, specially in Gekiga and post-Gekiga) how humans are treated as tropes and not humans.
I found out that my favourite authors are actually fans of shojosei.
And I recently started reading Sukeban Deka, and have som CLAMP read behind.
    I need this.
    I need more shojosei!

If you take video recs, I have a question, but it's not necessarily manga:
For mobile games like The Wizard's Promise, Twisted wonderland, Thousand Noble Musketeers, and a handful of rhythm games that aren't Otome games, but get roped in with them (because of the all male cast & the empasis on the bond with the player). Could you clarify the demographics of some of these games? I'm aware of the genres, but the demographics have always confused me since most of these games target both genders, but ends up with a mostly female fanbase. And the art styles don't really help with identification.
Btw: VIZ has licensed the Twisted Wonderland manga, so I highly recommend it. They change the M/C for every dorm to fit the villain's arc.

@@ColleensMangaRecsIt is available outside of Japan, but just not in english. So many Japanese manga apps are region locked but luckily Manga Park isn’t. GANMA is also not region locked, but only in Japanese as well. Would be cool to see english versions of both of these apps. ❤️

@ColleensMangaRecs OMG. I just wanted to say thank you for that review because before that, I didn't really understand Jung's character. I used to be one of those Cheese in The Trap readers who hated Jung, mostly being bitter that he and Seol/Sul ended up together mostly because of Inho and Sul's casualness and chemistry with eachother; I now realize was pretty dumb. It was your review that made me reread the webtoon, keeping in mind Jung's perspective and feelings and made me fall in love with the comic all over again, no longer seeing the ending as a tragedy but rather bittersweet, poetic and realistic. Thanks 😊💖
