As a male person and not a targeted demographic, I do dip into shoujo manga occasionally because sometimes shoujo has the FUNNIEST shit. Ther are tracks of shoujo (or josei) humor that simply do not cross over into a male person's brain, cognitive or otherwise. The insanely funny but criminally under-appreciated "My Heavenly Hockey Club" (how dare they only released 8 volumes in English?) The anime "3-Nen D-Gumi Glass no Kamen" almost sent me to the hospital (the Helen Keller episode KILLED). But my personal favorite shoujo mangaka is still Azuki Yuu ("Shouwa Aho Akanuke Ichiban", "Iga no Kabamaru", some of her dirty josei shorts)... The woman may not be a 49er, but she also started in the late 70s and is now in her 70s.... might still be working in fact. It's not just the goofy faces of her casts, male or female young or old human or animal (especially them horses), there's just something deeply subversive and disturbing about her humor, her stories, her drawing style, yet without sloping into the dark. Just cracks me the hell up.
you described hana kimi and i went "huh that sounds kinda familiar maybe its just a common trope now" and then you mentioned choi minho and a huge lighbulb went off in my head i LOVED To the Beautiful You!!!
indeed my favorite shojo manga (and manga in general) came from this magazine. I love many titles from Hana to Yume (but I don't wanna list them as otherwise this comment would be very long :])
You're such a phenomenal advocate for the shojosei community Colleen, each of these deep dives makes me sad that I don't have enough time to check out all the titles you're getting me excited about! (And I run a Blue Lock channel lol)
I needed a lot this kind of works in my life, and I just recently got into it! Men and boys should read more shojosei than anything else regarding manga, since it's the only mainstream media where it treats people as people! As fucking people!
A video about the mangazine publishing some of my favourite series, I am so happy!!! AND YES... I started chanting "gotta rec 'em all" in my head as the rap kept going, might be cursed/blessed now, not sorry, enjoyed it very much!
So glad to see more Sukeban Deka representation. I immediately loved it ever since I first read it, and the live action show is even more amazing. It's crazy to me how unknown it is in the West considering its popularity in Japan. Some parts of the later story would not go well today but I really hope it gets its well deserved official english release one day along with Glass Mask (who btw also had a crossover chapter with Sukeban Deka, Suzue Miuchi in the role of the antagonist hahah)!
Indeed!! From Glass no Kamen, Doubutsu no Oisha-san, Baby and Me, all the way to Yona of the Dawn and Skip Beat. Koucha Ouji was one of my all time favorite!! So many great series that never got animated.
WHAT!? I had no idea To The Beautiful You was a shojo manga adaptation?? I was OBSESSED with that drama as a kid. From one Minho enjoyer to another, I CANNOT recommend it ENOUGH!

Colleen, thank you for another deep dive into the history of a worthwhile publication that has brought access to diverse shoujo and has emboldened mangaka within the genre. I actually laughed at anecdote about the Please Save My Earth author having to add a disclaimer about it being a work of fiction. 😂 It was definitely an impactful story for me in terms of its sci-fi and fantasy elements.

Loved this video!! Fruits Basket may have been my introduction to the magazine without me even knowing it at the time and one of the most formative series for me as a young girl, but Hana to Yume carries just so many of my nostalgic shojo loves alongside seminal classics. The previously mentioned Fruits Basket, but also Please Save My Earth, Glass Mask, Baby & Me, Kamisama Kiss, NG Life, Love So Life, S.A., Twinkle Stars, etc... this video took me back to my middle school days when i somehow stumbled upon the kamisama kiss manga (then ongoing), binged it in a day, and then thoroughly researched the wikipedia page of hana to yume to find and read more shoujo manga. i think more than half of the shoujo manga i've read are from hana to yume alone!
I loooved this video so many interesting recs! And I loved your manga rec rap at the end that was unironically hilarious! You reproduced the pokérap style so perfectly! Amazing and hilarious! 🤣❤
My two favorite things (Patalliro and Choi Minho) mentioned in one video?? I WIN 💖 And also this amazing shoujo rap will live in my mind forever thank you 🙏
I honestly had no idea that my manga reading journey would start from Hana to Yume (things like Fruits Basket and Gakuen Alice give me nostalgic feelings even if I read them in high school). Also I really enjoyed the rap at the end even if it's going to be living rent free in my head now 😅
When I was a kid and thought that all manga are for kids, I read God Child (Earl Cain series), and let me tell you that it explains so much why I am the way I am today. Kaori Yuki is the goat of problematic themes.
Gakuen Alice my beloved! Although I'm not sure I would compare it to Harry Potter given how dark the tone becomes after the first few plot twists about the school
Speak for yourself! My favorite manga came from Nakayoshi! (Yes, I like magical girls, why do you ask?) Seriously, though, it’s cool that you’re covering Hana to Yume. Even the name of the magazine is great. (What can sum up my manga tastes better than describing it as “flowers and dreams?”)
New Colleen video and I just NOW SAW IT????? Also low key I grew up with Angel Sanctuary, but I can see why its not everyone's cup of tea. But nostalgia sucks sometimes. Kaori Yuki made better manga like Godchild
I have just read the synopsis of Angel Sanctuary, and it seems like it has all the edge I need when I want to take break from the fluff. Also, the art looks so pretty 👀Added to plan to read list.
YESSS I've been waiting for this video for a while now Skip beat was the first anime that made me starting reading manga And best decision ever It still ongoing and it is so good 😂 Too long and slow burn but worth it
I'm a soon to be mangaka that have been mostly reading gekiga, shonen and seinen, and not much of it, because it's tiresome as fuck how (with some exceptions, specially in Gekiga and post-Gekiga) how humans are treated as tropes and not humans. I found out that my favourite authors are actually fans of shojosei. And I recently started reading Sukeban Deka, and have som CLAMP read behind. I need this. I need more shojosei!
If you take video recs, I have a question, but it's not necessarily manga: For mobile games like The Wizard's Promise, Twisted wonderland, Thousand Noble Musketeers, and a handful of rhythm games that aren't Otome games, but get roped in with them (because of the all male cast & the empasis on the bond with the player). Could you clarify the demographics of some of these games? I'm aware of the genres, but the demographics have always confused me since most of these games target both genders, but ends up with a mostly female fanbase. And the art styles don't really help with identification. Btw: VIZ has licensed the Twisted Wonderland manga, so I highly recommend it. They change the M/C for every dorm to fit the villain's arc.
@@ColleensMangaRecsIt is available outside of Japan, but just not in english. So many Japanese manga apps are region locked but luckily Manga Park isn’t. GANMA is also not region locked, but only in Japanese as well. Would be cool to see english versions of both of these apps. ❤️
Hey, i dont know if you'll see this comment, but i was wondering if you ever made a video/yt short about cheese in the trap or manhwa recs? I think i remembered seeing a video like that. I just wanted to ask cause i feel like I've been going crazy or maybe i dreamed it or something because i can not find it anywhere.
@ColleensMangaRecs OMG. I just wanted to say thank you for that review because before that, I didn't really understand Jung's character. I used to be one of those Cheese in The Trap readers who hated Jung, mostly being bitter that he and Seol/Sul ended up together mostly because of Inho and Sul's casualness and chemistry with eachother; I now realize was pretty dumb. It was your review that made me reread the webtoon, keeping in mind Jung's perspective and feelings and made me fall in love with the comic all over again, no longer seeing the ending as a tragedy but rather bittersweet, poetic and realistic. Thanks 😊💖

New Colleen video and I just NOW SAW IT????? Also low key I grew up with Angel Sanctuary, but I can see why its not everyone's cup of tea. But nostalgia sucks sometimes. Kaori Yuki made better manga like Godchild
Angel Sanctuary my beloved.
I enjoyed this video without the skits NGL! Educational and serious without being boring!
Love the magazine deep dives 🎉
Gonna check out Oresama Teacher 🙏
Just the musical entertainment I needed for this evening of boycotting Eurosong! :D
😤😤😤 thanks for boycotting!!
I have just read the synopsis of Angel Sanctuary, and it seems like it has all the edge I need when I want to take break from the fluff. Also, the art looks so pretty 👀Added to plan to read list.
Alice academy my first ever manga I was obsessed to kwon the ending becouse of the anime
Please dedicated a Video to Flowers or Dessert .love this to Magazine
I second this! Mangas from Dessert are all banger
This video is 💖PEAK💖
Now I need a meme video of Eminem from 8 Mile with your rap on top 😂
YESSS
I've been waiting for this video for a while now
Skip beat was the first anime that made me starting reading manga
And best decision ever
It still ongoing and it is so good 😂
Too long and slow burn but worth it
Thank you for your song🤣
I'm a soon to be mangaka that have been mostly reading gekiga, shonen and seinen, and not much of it, because it's tiresome as fuck how (with some exceptions, specially in Gekiga and post-Gekiga) how humans are treated as tropes and not humans.
I found out that my favourite authors are actually fans of shojosei.
And I recently started reading Sukeban Deka, and have som CLAMP read behind.
I need this.
I need more shojosei!
Hey, we love the funny bits!!!!!
COLEEN VINE BOOM
Oh my god oresama teacher!!
If you take video recs, I have a question, but it's not necessarily manga:
For mobile games like The Wizard's Promise, Twisted wonderland, Thousand Noble Musketeers, and a handful of rhythm games that aren't Otome games, but get roped in with them (because of the all male cast & the empasis on the bond with the player).
I spit up my coffee at "For shame! Japan has gone woke."
Will you do this series about Nakayoshi?
What was the name of the app mentioned? Manga Park?
Manga Park, yes!! it isn't available outside of Japan though so fingers crossed Hakusensha makes an app for english speakers some time soon

No you aren't imagining it, I did!! It was an upload of a video on Tik tok I made but I privated it since then.
Thanks 😊💖
