Seeing my game featured scared me half to death. But shoot yeah, looking over the trailer for my game I do realize that I added WAY TO MUCH glitching effects for transitions xP but it's interesting about adding in game audio as "flavor crystals" definitely like that one. Also need to just show pure gameplay or pure text so it's not to overstimulating, and then the last bit about just showing one or two social media channels is a God send. I'll take it all to heart and work on making my marketing skills better! :D

Oh yeah! I got lucky to get in, was worth waiting until the end. Thank you so much for featuring and the kind words. Thanks again Jonas for inspiring us, can't wait for the next video.

Great video and an amazing surprise to see Derek involved! I was anticipating this Trailer review, but the inclusion of the Trailer-King makes it even better!
I've been a fan of Dani before he even started developing karlson, he inspired me to code but now i dont feel like doing it, but everytime i see him in a random video it makes me feel happy and makes me want to code again
Hmm, it's a little more like, "Imagine the people watching only have a fraction of a second to understand what's going on in a shot before the trailer starts a new idea."
Toveri yeah, you don’t want to talk down to your audience or explain things they’ll easily understand. It doesn’t feel good to be on the receiving end, and by calling out the mundane as worthy of calling out, it makes the game seem very very generic.
Actually in the Firewatch trailer, the beggining part was the worst one for me, it felt like he is playing with us and after he threw the fireworks, nothing really happent... They just tumbled aside. But the rest of the trailer was amazing, it had a form and the story and gameplay was nice.
"Environments are only interesting if we know what's happening in them" This is very interesting. Because I've made similar arguments for films and film making. You see, without the characters and the plot of the film, what are we looking at exactly? An environment with some interesting events? World building is good, but only if you can do so while impacting the story you're trying to tell. So it seems that video games are not much different. Except in this case, your characters and stories equate to your gameplay. Fascinating.
@@DerekLieu Yep, just as some people forget that world building is only a part of what should be communicated in films. That's the very reason i ever even made that argument, because someone was arguing that the new starwars films are bad souly because there wasn't really any world building. And that is simply an incorrect perspective in my own opinion. But hey man i really appreciate you responding to my comments. :)
33:00 This reminded me of a great GDC talk I saw about how you should "make the trailer before the game." At first it sounded ridiculous, but then when I tried it I realized how much it helps to focus on trailer content as early as possible. It gave me a small, concrete goal to work toward when it felt like there was so much to do as a solo dev. And more importantly, it helped take my disjointed ideas about the game and really solidify them into a coherent plan. Even if you never end up releasing that original draft of the trailer, I think every developer should at least plan it out at some point during pre-production. It makes you dial in on the most important aspects of the game, and can complement a GDD as a tool to keep you focused on the right stuff.
This was pretty informative, big thanks to Jonas and Derek. I'll check out his channel. :) And thanks to everyone who sent in trailers. It's much more helpful to see what can improve trailers when the trailers aren't all high budget productions. But seriously, how is that last game made by one person?
At 39:50 he uses Untitled Goose Game as an example of a game that doesn't look really pretty but succeeded, and this was to explain that that was rare and not to expect it. I have an issue with this thinking because Untitled Goose Game does look appealing visually despite it's low poly style. The reason being that your graphics don't need to be the prettiest thing your audience has ever seen. Your graphics simply need to be visually appealing for the gameplay you're trying to make. It's a question of cinematography. Untitled Goose Game's graphics are gorgeous for a cartoon concept like playing a goose thief simulator which is what this game is designed to be. If you're not making a game that suits a lower poly visual style, then absolutely the art will hold your trailer back. The low poly and bold color aesthetic of Untitled Goose Game is not bad art or visuals. It's perfect art for that game concept and immediately sets the tone for the trailer. If you want to use low poly graphics, you need to match your gameplay to that same aesthetic.
Although my trailer didn't get featured, I can still learn from the feedback Jonas gave the other people and use these tips when I'm making the trailer for the game that I'm currently developing! :-)
