I have had mine flat mounted for over two years and it works perfectly. Not bothered with 12v as my Bluetti's can handle the power. Likewise I didn't use a dremel just opened the unit up.
Great video. Question about the cable though. Just to be clear you did not have to cut any of the original cables and if you wanted could use the starlink router?
That was interesting, I like to see how things are put together and how adaptations are possible. Did you say starlink are now doing something simpler? I'll have to re-run the video. Regarding fitting it to the roof, could you fix 4 legs to the original back panel by screws or small bolts from the inside, and then glue the front panel back in place? You could set the height to clear or level off with the roof rack to shelter the unit from the wind and glue the feet in place to the roof. Love the soundtrack malarkey, thinking of endless possibilities for subliminal messaging and general fun. Take care. Hope Mandy is improving, best wishes to you both.👋🇬🇧🇪🇺🇺🇦
Tech marches on at a pace John as you say and with the release of Starlink Mini you could have potentially saved showing us your knife skills 🤣👌 keep up the good work, always interesting. Michael
Starlink mini isn’t a realistic option, you can’t buy it without already being a residential Starlink user and the mini has data speed limitations that wouldn’t work for me.
Great uograde, i run mine with the Netgear M1 and just need to wait for Starlink to come online before i switch over in the netgear app. i have noticed my Victron and Cameras like me to reboot the router after i switch back to 4g though. Be interested to see how you get on wiht the I-net as i had their smaller router and found it very poor (would keep dropping connection)
With the amount of messing around, cutting, heat dissipation etc , is there any reason you cant just take off the leg and mount it flat with its original case? I have not looked into it as I probably dont use thevan enough to worry. But it would seem with roof racks etc there is enough depth to acommodate the rear dish of the housing.....so I assume there is another reason why everyone is cutting off an already waterproof back? Cheers Ed
With the motors connected the dish would need to see movement, so you’d need to still access the pcb to remove some connectors, one of the cables goes through the pole, so overall it’d be still a tricky procedure to then glue some of it back together.
Hi John, recently came to your channel prior to do a small boat install. Great info in all your videos! As a suggestion, would it be worth doing a short segment on costs of your main parts. Or add these costs as you refer to them? It will also date stamp costs/age etc to routers/aerials, helping others decide on whether its time to upgrade, too expensive etc. I'm very interested in Starlink but last I looked, the monthly cost was about £80.
@@GadgetJohn it's still useful information John. Thanks for taking the time to dive into these topics beyond surface deep too! Makes a huge difference when I'm adding to my understanding whilst watching. Everyday's a school day! Had a similar realisation with an old 12v fridge repair and install, due to voltage drop and a 4700 micro Farad capacitor! Who knew!🤣 👍👍
ai music is proliferating through RUclips at present. It all sounds the same bland mess albeit with the creators bespoke lyrics. Let's just say I don't think it's gonna have real musicians worried for a while 😬
The newer version is flat mount so looks like starlink had the same idea 😂 great to know the operation is just as good. On the list for our van 👍

You opened it up the same way he did?
Nice interesting video John. Looking forward to see what type of back cover design you come up with that’s waterproof and ventilation ideas. 👍
Might be worth sealing up the hole in the back of the original case and use that as the case for flat mount.
Great work mate. Love that music during the strip down too 😊

Game changer 👍 Thanks John
Great video, John, very clear. Thought the music was another clever touch too
Glad you enjoyed it

Hi John, cool idea! Do you know how thick the dishy is? I mean just the antenna array.
Grettings from Switzerland
Love the music!
Great vlog John 👍 love the music lol😂
Be safe
Thanks 👍

Hiya,
Can't find the link to the shorter Starlink cable, is it me, did I miss it?
Cheesy music 😂 worked a treat 👍

The GL X3000 runs perfectly fine on EE or Starlink, even both bonded together. No reboots and no messing around.
The song was hilarious 😂
Good see you put video on channel thanks for the share on channel thanks lee

That’s the issue I’ve faced in the past with changing costs so I no longer include them as they change so fast these days.

Ace. Who does the music for you?
I made it myself 👍🏻
Is the point of Starlink it can motor around and find the best signal, not this not be static ?
The dish doesn’t track as such, once it finds the orientation it locks onto the target Starlink constellation and then doesn’t move.
😊
Music was v irritating but interesting video 👍
I think you have voided your warranty!
🤭😂

It’s just a bit of fun, definitely not going to replace those musicians with real creative talent.
