That's the best. Tie the hangers together with the ties. You can also use a belt through the inside of the hanger. The end of the belt makes a great handle.
I think a good piece of advice is to make sure that you’re packing heavy things like books, tools, etc. in small boxes (as small as they can fit) and light things like blankets, pillows, etc. in large boxes. its tempting to throw all of your books in a big box so they’re all together but you probably wont be able to lift it on your own
Moving hack from someone who has worked with pro movers. If you are loading a moving truck, line the back wall with the boxes stacked high. Once all boxes are in you can put mattresses/box springs in front to hold them back there and strap that all down against back wall. Then you start lego-ing furniture. You don't want room for things to wiggle or shift during the drive. You don't want a bunch of loose stuff up top. Only things that will stay relatively still. For your mirrors, art, glass, breakable things wait till the end and on the wall near the front you'll want to have a dresser or some solid place to set them. Put down towels/blankets for them to sit on as well. Then between each piece of glass/art ect put another towel or blanket. Padding between each one. Finally strap the whole padded mass against the wall. Another thing to load last is chairs. They can be set on top of stuff at the end. Also be sure to utilitize spaces in your car. The easier it is to start pulling out the furniture then the beds and then the boxes will make the unloading much faster
For anyone reading the comments, Home Depot sells boxes for less than $1. I love the small size the most because they are easy to carry two of them, they have handles, and I find that things break less if you don’t put as much into large boxes.
For anyone on a budget, a few months prior to your move, hoard your boxes from packages!! I saved all my large Chewy, Amazon and Thrive market boxes. Sure, it’s kinda messy but I didn’t pay for a single moving box! :)
This is a great shout! I have to have thrown 20 good sized boxes from Amazon in the recycling bin over the last 6 months, so it'd be a shame to then have to search for or pay for some when I need them for my move.
I've found this is the easiest place to get boxes! My son's friend came to help us move and saw bunch of liquor boxes and thought I had a serious drinking problem 🤣
Yeah, I work at a winery/brewery/distillery and we go through so many boxes!! That’s how I got all the boxes I need for my move. And the dividers in the wine boxes are so convenient for glassware, and the growler & howler boxes are the perfect size for 3-wick candles (I have a massive candle collection, so this was a huge win for me.. lol).
The way I label my boxes: get FedEx pouches (they're free!), cut copy paper (8.5 x 11) in half, write your description and slide inside the pouch. The pouch can stay on the box, the paper can be recycled, and new paper with description reinserted for future use. You can also use colored copy paper for box/room assignment.
Such a waste of trash bags. If you used them with the red straps on top you can use that to contain the hangers and then be able to reuse them at a later time.
My rule is heavy stuff in small boxes, and light stuff in big boxes. And don’t forget the all important box for tools and furniture bits, And you keep that box in your possession!
Use ikea bags for linens, bedding, small rugs, sweaters, hair stuff... etc. I taped labels to them and it made it super simple. They also take up less room in a truck. Also reusable!
I used these as well, I also used compression bags on Duvets, blankets.. I love the IKEA storage boxes with the zippers so you can just store them in your linen closet with the items labelled on the outside. I had four..one for towels, one for bed linen, one for table linen and one for Duvets and Blankets. Highly recommend these IKEA storage boxes with zippers.
Next time you move go to Home Depot (if you have one near you) and the have small medium and large boxes and I only know the large are 97 cents a piece (US)
Hello Sophia quick question love can I use a ziptie around the hanger 🤔 or is a hair rubber band more flexible we are renovating or home in the end of March so we're getting a storage unit to put alot of are large furniture in and clothing as well so appreciate your in put thanks love have pleasant day😊👍💞
Great tips! I learnt a lot from this video and I have a little tip on my own. Instead of cardboard boxes, I have inexpensive, reusable, stackable plastic boxes. They are easier to carry because of their built-in handles and there are even some with wheels for the heavier objects. Once the moving part is over, they can be used as dust- and water resistant storage containers and the clear ones allow to see what's inside without needing to go through all of them.
I’ve actually used the trash bag jack before when moving clothes and it was perfect! It might add a little extra time but I actually used the other end of the trash bag so that I could still use the bags later on! The process was basically the same, but instead I started on the bed to shove the clothes in and then hung them up to tie the bag elastic around the hangers
In another video, I saw a caution against using black (or any opaque) garbage bags for packing clothes. The movers thought they were trash and threw all the clothes away!
I love how the comment section is filled with positive suggestions from peoples life experiences! This is humanity embracing with love as we are meant to be!
I’m moving in less than a month and it’s been so stressful going through everything to toss out but this video seems very helpful for stuff I didn’t think about, I’m glad I haven’t done my clothes yet, I’m moving 3 states away so I need to actually pack them securely.
Thank you, you did a Great Job!! I give every box a number and make a list with all the box numbers, for each box number I write what important or kinds of things are in the box so I can target the box I need with lightning speed. It also helps to keep the boxes in numerical order especially if they're going into storage. Add your sticky notes tip to this and you can't go wrong!!
@@GodsDaughterQ Thank uou 😁 so glad it helped. I also did it with my craft room. Gave evey flat surface, drawer and shelf a number... T for Table.. TA for table A, TB, T C.. Shelf - S1 for shelf unit 1 then each shelf on S1 - S1A, S1B, etc.. or Area - (an area under a table or corner.. A1, A2, etc.. works great for garages. Stick the list to a clipboard on a handy wall spot and you can finally relax. Makes purging stuff so easy. Just work through the list at your pace. I use a note app and make one note called Where I Stuck It just for those moments when I hid something or like a mouse catcher/trap knew I'd forget where I stuck it... So helpful. Saved me a number of times. Take care, have a great summer!!
Grocery stores usually deconstruct their boxes and stack them up to trash later. They are free and they will give you as much as you need or based off what they have. Just call around. Don’t waist a trip, it’s better to call and ask.😉
You can actually just get *free* boxes from your local grocery store. If they don’t have enough, you can go to Walmart too. Banana boxes specifically are great for books because they have lids and handles. Stores will be happy to give them to you because otherwise they have to pay to dispose of them ;)
Amazon sells large rectangular duffle bags made of IKEA bag blue material. I moved all my soft goods in those. Zip tied the zippers and straps, just in case. Also, I use Bankers Boxes for heavy and delicate items. They are stronger than brown boxes, and stack easily, and I break them down flat and store in giant zip lock storage bags for my next move.
I wish I found this video before I just moved lol. You don't realize how much work it is to move until we have to do it. That's why I created some things that helped me too, beautiful apartment btw, enjoy! :)
The thorough explanations in this video are everything 😂 thank you so much for this awesome content!!♥️ (Moving in abt two months btw, I want to be prepared and ready)
Found out today we have to move out in three days and I packed my wardrobe first and now I’m watching this and I’m like WHY did I take all my clothes off the hangers!! Should have looked up hacks first 🙄
I'm pregnant and moving and the clothes hack is great! I'll also be using the color coded sticky notes on the door of the room and on the side of the boxes! Thank you for these tips!!
Didnt see this one in comments: Take a picture of the contents of the box before sealing. Add a number like "K 1", Kitchen 1, and you have a general idea of what is where. You can index each box on an index card but thats a bit too OCD for me lol. I also built stuff with cardboard, even shelves. Recycle!
This weekend my dad told me we were moving in with my new step dad and getting a new dog! I’m so excited but, will be sad leaving for my moms house now lol! I am moving in 2 weeks tho!
Great tips! I recently saw the suggestion of setting up a packing kit with markers, scissors, packing tape, masking tape etc, corraling the items so you know where they are! I have a couple of cleaning totes, and am going to resonate one for this kit!
Always best to save boxes. That one should be on every list. I reuse all the Amazon and Sam’s Club boxes I get for moving. Just broke them down and put them behind my clothes hanging in my closet to use when I move. Great closet clothing hack. Thanks.
The way I do my labels so I can reuse the box is by doing the same thing you did but writing on the outside of the tape with wet erase markers, or by taping down three sides of a page protector and inserting my label that way. Easy removal and it won't damage your box. Removing the wet erase markers can be kind of messy though.
For boxes, at least in Ontario, Canada, a cheap way to get boxes is collect them from work, LCBO (liquor store), grocery stores, etc. I’ve looked them all up too. Canadian Tire has the cheapest boxes ($1.79, $2.79 and $3.79 for small, med and large). Large is massive and a bit useless. Med is nice cuz there’s only so much you can fit in small LCBO boxes
Furniture stores often have huge boxes they will give you for long furniture hauls to protect your appliances. They also make a great makeshift dumpster if you have a truck. Put it in truck and just slide into landfill dumpster.
My husband and I own a four plex and we rent each one for $950 They're 3 bed 2 bath with indoor laundry room and back patios We live in one for free I'd say they're super affordable and they're fairly new, built 2015 and each one is 1,100 sq ft. Rent is extremely affordable in TX for sure!
I moved on my own 2 yrs ago. It wasn't easy at first mentally letting go was hard. But I'm good now. And plan to move again. I love your kitchen. My next place is gonna have a bigger more functional kitchen I'm so excited! And congratulations on your new place
I really enjoyed your video, lots of good tips. Keep posting such amazing things in the future also. Will shortly be right back to check your upcoming updates.
I’m planning on being moved out by March or may 2021. I’ve been thinking about paying practice rent for the apartment I absolutely want and then using the practice rent money for furniture. We’ll see how that works out but I’m excited to get my apartment and decorate my space.
I've moved so many times and have changed up my decor each time. Don't invest too much money on your decor because you most likely will change it next time you move. Invest in a good mattress and sofa(removable covers if you have pets) Everything else you can change up when your tastes change!
U-Haul has the least expensive boxes that we've found. Also, get boxes that are the same size. That makes stacking them up much easier than having 100 boxes that are different heights, etc. Also the U-Haul boxes have hand holds in the sides! Much easier to carry with hand holds.
DIY Vaccum seal! I found it to save so much space when I would take dirty laundry to wash at my moms house on holiday trips; to evenly distribute the clothes in heavy black trash bags( so they keep a uniformed shape to fit together best when packed) then twist the top of the bag around vaccum hose, turn on vaccum until all air is out. Remove the hose and pinch off by continuing to twist further, then seal quickly with 2 doubled tiny rubber bands that I had leftover from bracelet rubbetband making. Then I packed them in large hard covered suit cases with wheels. Do the same process for trip back home, just fold and roll the item/clothes before hand. This would work for all cloth things including pillows!!!
For the bags over the clothes, I don't put a hole in the bag. I put the bag on in reverse and cinch the bag close around the hangers up top and use the draw string to tie around the handles. You can zip tie or band them together first and then just do one tie with the pull strings and do a bowtie so that you don't knot the strings. This way you can use the garbage bags when you are done and it's super fast to do.
Here's a tip: a lot of stores will give you boxes for FREE if you're not picky about it. You can ask them what days are their inventory days and they will tell you when to come back and get them free of charge! I always get boxes from Walmart but a lot of other stores do it as well
Moving boxes: You can actually find out when certain stores get their trucks and then go there later that night or the next day and they'll usually have a ton of boxes they'll give you for free. I work at Dollar Tree and people come get our boxes all the time! All we do is throw them away anyway. Plus then you can pick out the different sizes you want 🙂
If all your clothes are sorted into types and hanging on the same kind of hanger, it really helps you get the trash bag on, from the bottom up, so they are reusable. I like your rubber band idea. Also, I bought clear plastic shoe bags from Amazon and sorted them by use.
Amazon has these amazing Heavy duty zipper bag boxes, with back pack straps. You use them just like a box, only it's a bag, so when you arrive and upack, you have these easy to store BAGS, not boxes. And with the carry handles and back pack straps, no lugging a box!
Here is my moving hack I moved 13 times in 17 years. 😁😁I use see through plastic bags over my clothes like this girl and I don’t use boxes any more because it’s expensive and you have too many boxes as a leftover after you move in . Label the bags like mums bedroom Like shoe room so when my husband picks it up he knows where to drop it . I do put plates into plastic bags so don’t need to label since you see through goes into the plastic bin container. I put ornaments into towels and into another this time laundry basket. We move ourselves we do it like a light . In n out shaking all about 😀😀 everything is in it’s new place within 2/ 3 days . 😀
I like the idea of putting valuable and breakables in the suitcase. I always wrap things with shirts and towels. And things so that I already knew and you can buy boxes at Walmart that are specifically for packing and moving which are not that expensive.
Or you could put duct tape down first, then your packing tape label (leaving a border of duct tape), and when you want to remove it you can just remove the packing tape and the duct tape protects your box
Great ideas as I contemplate selling my home. I love the clothing idea! Also, Walmart has packing boxes that are less expensive! Thank you for your great ideas and creativity!
I started using plastic boxes because I move a lot. I like them because I feel like they protect my stuff if the boxes end up with water on them, plus I can group things together and see what's inside. In the past when the movers packed me, they would combine different rooms together which made it hard to unpack. I also put my shoes in plastic boxes because they were getting crushed during the move when they were just in cardboard shoe boxes. I now also put moisture-rid packets in everything because the movers sometimes leave the boxes in the warehouse which makes your clothes smell musty
You can get free boxes from local grocery/liquor stores OR if you really want to purchase new boxes, home depot prices are way cheaper than what you paid for, each box no matter what size, are about $1.50
This is a good video Sophia! I have done a lot of these and that first one will change your moving experience Soooo much! I started first using those suit bags but those are more costly and can't cover as many clothes as a cheaper garbage bag. I love the screws taped to the piece of furniture, that is a great idea. For me, I always have had the necessity box/bag and chargers and things like that need to be in there as well. Last bust not least the bed being done first is such great advice! You know you get tired. Take a break or a nap and feel that new place happiness! Amazing looking spot btw. Congrats on that 😉
I go to Walgreens for empty boxes from deliveries as they are clean and small. I also actually take clean Amazon and other boxes from recycling bins on trash day. They often have tons of great pillow packing material. My favorite is a Disney box with mickey mouse ears. Those white boxes are super nice but too expensive and I don't want to have to store them. I'd leave the labels on them and just reuse next time.
The helpful tip that I got from this video was the trashbag over the clothes! That's a genius idea!! For pre-planning, if you live on the ground level, invest in a dolly or a wagon. If you live on a above ground level, make sure there's an elevator so you can use dolly and wagon. ✌️
Why make a hole at the bottom and then end up with so many wasted garbage bags. what’s the difference to jus go from the bottom then use the tie on the bags fastened on the top. Isn’t it the same thing
I use the garbage bags the other way and scoop the clothes in and tie it tight. That way I can reuse the bag
good idea!!
That's the best. Tie the hangers together with the ties.
You can also use a belt through the inside of the hanger. The end of the belt makes a great handle.
Me too
Karlee Campbell I never thought of that!! such a good tip bc the hangers can hurt the hands
I do the same thing! 😊
I think a good piece of advice is to make sure that you’re packing heavy things like books, tools, etc. in small boxes (as small as they can fit) and light things like blankets, pillows, etc. in large boxes. its tempting to throw all of your books in a big box so they’re all together but you probably wont be able to lift it on your own
Buy a Dolly!
I find heavy duty contractor bags are the best to move pillows and blankets
thank you!!!
I usually pack combination of books and clothes in trolley bags, so it is easier to drag heavy stuff. And clothes in the carboard boxes
That's really smart! I use wine boxes for heavy stuff like books, or rolling suitcases. It's just more secure and easier on movers.

This comment was such a blessing. Thank you so much!!
Do the walls inside moving trucks come with spots designed for those straps to attach?
Appreciate that information im actually packing today . Will be helpful when I pack the truck.
I bought ratchet straps to tie down each section. There are lots of tie down spots inside the truck/container.
Does this work for a cross country move?
For anyone reading the comments, Home Depot sells boxes for less than $1. I love the small size the most because they are easy to carry two of them, they have handles, and I find that things break less if you don’t put as much into large boxes.

Instead of the index cards, use the blue painters tape on the box to label. They are super easy to remove and don't damage the box.
Masking tape works PHENOMENAL also to write on and remove!!
I'm doing that - and I lable on 2 adjoining sides!
I got so invested in the comments I didn’t realize she was still talking about putting that trash bag over the clothes 😭😂😂
Lol she talks to much and I got bored listening
Same I didn’t even realise ahah

Public speaking not her thing. She talks like a kid.
Tip: Zip ties are more reliable that a rubber band.

Label the boxes by writing on masking tape so you don’t have to rip it off. Just cover it with more masking tape and relabel for your next move.
For your boxes you can drive by liquor stores, gas stations. Etc. And they will give you free boxes for anything!

or wrap fragile items with them
This is such an amazing video, I am so happy that I landed up here. Keep posting more such videos, I will come back super soon to watch more.
Listening to all the tips while packing to move… thank you!! This will help us a ton.
Furniture stores often have huge boxes they will give you for long furniture hauls to protect your appliances. They also make a great makeshift dumpster if you have a truck. Put it in truck and just slide into landfill dumpster.
omg where is this apartment?! Your apartment looks so nice and spacious. Could never find that in NYC 😭😭😭😭
Move to Texas. Can get a big ass 1 BR for 750 a month or even a 3br house for only around 1500
Probably can now, from what I hear people are moving out of NYC in droves
@@_MARSyt don't be tellin anymore people to move to Texas !!
@@CS-er9xv actually you right. Sorry about that
My husband and I own a four plex and we rent each one for $950
They're 3 bed 2 bath with indoor laundry room and back patios
We live in one for free
I'd say they're super affordable and they're fairly new, built 2015 and each one is 1,100 sq ft.
Omg love it and ty so much for these hacks
I really enjoyed your video, lots of good tips. Keep posting such amazing things in the future also. Will shortly be right back to check your upcoming updates.
I’m planning on being moved out by March or may 2021. I’ve been thinking about paying practice rent for the apartment I absolutely want and then using the practice rent money for furniture. We’ll see how that works out but I’m excited to get my apartment and decorate my space.
I've moved so many times and have changed up my decor each time. Don't invest too much money on your decor because you most likely will change it next time you move. Invest in a good mattress and sofa(removable covers if you have pets)
Everything else you can change up when your tastes change!
I found it to save so much space when I would take dirty laundry to wash at my moms house on holiday trips;
to evenly distribute the clothes in heavy black trash bags( so they keep a uniformed shape to fit together best when packed) then twist the top of the bag around vaccum hose, turn on vaccum until all air is out.
Wow! Sooooo helpful. Smart stuff. Thank you!
By Sophia Lee, awesome content it was really entertaining
Here's a tip: a lot of stores will give you boxes for FREE if you're not picky about it. You can ask them what days are their inventory days and they will tell you when to come back and get them free of charge! I always get boxes from Walmart but a lot of other stores do it as well
Moving boxes: You can actually find out when certain stores get their trucks and then go there later that night or the next day and they'll usually have a ton of boxes they'll give you for free. I work at Dollar Tree and people come get our boxes all the time! All we do is throw them away anyway. Plus then you can pick out the different sizes you want 🙂
so smart!! I am definitely going to do this next time I move!
Thank you so much for all the hacksI appreciate you & Congratultions onyour new apartment & move 😂
i love your barstools! Where did you get them? Also, thank you for making this video, you gave me such good ideas.
Great tips! Ty 🥰
I love those chairs on your island! Where are they from?? 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Yessss the bagging of clothes works so well! I’ve always done that too! 💙
Great ideas!! I use my clean kitchen trash can for those cleaning products already opened inside of it. Including dog shampoos etc‼️👏👏👏💛🧡❤️
wow. I think ur video was the most helpful out of all the videos I have watched
I know it was a long time ago but do you put everything in plastic bags? Sounds better than boxes or bins. What can't you put in a bag?
Wow the blue sticky note idea is amazing!
Good tips thanks 😊
i found your apartment checklist (it's our second apartment but it still really helps) & now i just LOVE your channel & content :)
I like the idea of putting valuable and breakables in the suitcase. I always wrap things with shirts and towels. And things so that I already knew and you can buy boxes at Walmart that are specifically for packing and moving which are not that expensive.
you’re the cutest person ever, i just found your channel, love your vids!
Taylor Staley ,, same here
Same!!
I just got some boxes from floral but i bet they're good for packing draperies and rods, being tall boxes that they are.
Thanks and BTW I love your sweater.
How did you pack your bedding did u just stick it in a box or bin bag?
Thanks for this !
Nice video!
Thank You for sharing🙏🏻🤗🤗
great tips! thanks!
Instead of rubber bands for the first one I would use zip ties ! U can find them at dollar tree idk I haven’t tried it yet but just an idea
Instead of using packing tape to label the box, use a piece of painters tape and write on them with a sharpie. It shouldn’t damage your box to remove.
You can get free boxes from local grocery/liquor stores OR if you really want to purchase new boxes, home depot prices are way cheaper than what you paid for, each box no matter what size, are about $1.50
thank you very useful
U-Haul is not doing re use or buy back during COVID st least here in Washington.
oh good to know!! didnt even think about that
Very helpful! Thanks.
These are great tips. I’ll definitely be using the garbage bag idea for my move cross country next weekend
I like how you do the bagging of the clothes with the hangers, but me being the way I am, if probably double bag them and tie it at the top.
Just subscribed love your energy girl 🤍
