It's always trial and error when you attempt something for the first time. Kudos to you for going out on your own like you did. The rain certainly didn't help at all but you worked through it. I think almost all backpackers, newbies as well as more experienced ones, often bring too much gear and we continually to tweak our gear. That's a great stove you brought, but heavy, same for the fuel canister. Keep it up and things get easier. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
As others have said, I admire your bravery. Your gear seemed to do great for you under those circumstances. Someone once told me to try things. It's only a failure if you don't try. Great video!
Really appreciate this video because I am wanting to start solo camping. Exactly the video I needed because I am buying equipment and starting from nothing at this point. Thank you for the video!
Great to see you getting out there and trying new things. The more backpacking trips you do better you'll get at it. Right now you're carrying too much weight. Each time you go on a backpacking trip write down all the items you had with you but didn't use. Also write down all the items you didn't have with you but wish you had. You have to start thinking smart you have to weigh the cost and benefit value. Your gas canister it's too large. There's enough gas in that can to last you weeks. A canister 1/3 the size then just fine. Your gas stove is also very nice but too large and too heavy. There are many inexpensive alternatives to replace it. You could have an entire cook kit it all fits into one hot that would be your canister your stove you're lighter your coffee cup all in one container. Keep doing what you're doing it's great to see you out.
Hey Nikki first time viewer here. I am about to relate to this Tuesday I am starting my channel and doing a solo overnight and slightly freaked out but excited. The rain is either friend or foe if you can stay dry its like a lullaby but if you get wet UGH haha. Cant wait to see more!!!

Why thank you for all of this valuable information my new friend. It is definitely noted. I’m glad you like my video and decided to stick around. And thank you the compliments on the smile.😊
I have to admire that instead of driving to your camp, you actually hiked along the road carrying your pack. I took a group kayak camping on Blue Ridge. Odile is brilliant in her own field so refuses to accept anyone's advice in their field. Smart people are like that, "I am a genius with computers so I must be a genius in all other fields, even those I never studied." She took 10 days of add-water mt house-type meals against our recommendation. By day three, she could not poop and was begging for our left-overs. I like those mt house-type meals, but NOT as a staple, only as an occasional or emergency meal. I can see a few ways you could do better, but as you said, you are a beginner and will learn. The more comfortable you are, the heavier your pack. Ultra-liters live in misery but can hike forever. Gear-junkies live in comfort but are exhausted at the end of the hike. I made those reflectex bags too but could never get the velcro to stick. I ended up adding a button. I love the remote stove. They weigh a ton and take up valuable space but are safer and more stable than a micro-stove. You can see where people put their really hot pots on the table.
@@richardjohnson4052 lol I’m not sure but either way I’m gonna learn what I can and enjoy what I can. Thanks for being a awesome friend and taking the time to comment on my video. I really appreciate it. I hope you watch my other videos too🙂
I'm an Aussie and I have to say I love your accent ;p I randomly found your video and love how relaxed you are. You know what, I have that same camp set and that stupid cutlery but I look at the little sliding thing on the handle and you have yours back away from the "eating end" so I am going to have to try that. Mine just kept on folding on me while I had anything in it
You made those freeze-dried meals look appetizing unlike Luke from outdoor review Channel he looks like he's just not enjoying them to me he's probably ate so many LOL
I did a backpacking trip at Raven Rock in Lillington, NC this past weekend. Between the 111 heat index, the 99% humidity, and the rainstorms I wasn't dry the whole weekend. Still, it was worth getting out and enjoying it. Was the backpack RUclipsr you watched Miranda? I made my own meal cozy watching her DIY video, but I ended up having to cut mine open and use it as a doormat so I had something clean and dry to stand on when I put on my shoes.
@@ChrisCollins001 love these kind of comments where others tell me of their adventures 🙂 Yes Miranda was the RUclipsr I got that idea from. I feel the same way on the still enjoying the camping even though it’s so hot and humid! I don’t think there is anything that could take me away from it, well other than accidentally leaving my coffee at home🤣.

Hi Nikki,,,,,, Reminds me of my first walking trip. The weather was awful but well worth it in the end. Most of my food i cooked before i left home making it easier for when I got to the place I wanted to be. Tent was an easy one to put up as i did practise in my back garden many times. I took to much and was laden with heavy tent and other equipment. So now i have learned to take only what I need and now travel lighter depending where and how long I want to go for. Coastal paths i love as i forage and fish the oceans for food for free. Hope you enjoy your next trip regards Mick,,,,,,,,,,, Chef-on-the-wild-side,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Hello. I shall be sending you shortly recipes i have made from foraging and hope you like this one. Try foraging for Jack-by-the-hedge. Once you have try boiling it with potatoes and let me know how it was. Regards Mick,,, Chef-on-the-wild-side,, X
"I am pretty wet." That's nice to know Niki lolz. Great first video .. Make your own meal Mountain House is full of salt and $$$$$$ expensive. Small jar of PB is an always.

Great video! I just started making boat camping content, and I also bought some temu camp gear. Everyone loves to rag on temu, but if you know what to look for, you can find some great stuff. I have that same cook kit and love it. I also have that pillow, and if it's hard to blow up/deflate, you can stick a screwdriver in the valve and punch it out and it'll work easier. Keep up the good work!
@@NikkiTV2023 I live many years in Florida and California but for now I’m here in Germany camping and hiking good thing here we don’t have wild mountain lions or bears only wild pigs and wolfs , stay safe out there!
try out those exofficio type long sleeve, quick drying shirts and pants/shorts. those cotton shirts, pants, ect get feeling completely disgusting after a few minutes or days, depending on the humidity, ect. your comfort level will go way up losing anything cotton for wicking/synthetic type clothes while hiking and sleeping. good luck with your backpacking 👍
I recommend mountain house bfast skillet. One of these days I'll watch the video all the way through. We're going rv camping this weekend. It will be a people watching event. I would rather trail camp in the fall or winter. A ribeye on the trail is good lol.. It's really quiet in the winter too. I use a thermarest questar 0 degree sleeping bag. It will allow you to sleep on your side. Ohh and get a wise owl tarp for cooking in the rain. It's cheap and lightweight. Also be mindful of smells. I'm careful cooking a ribeye in the back country. My buddy broke a few of those rules and a cat came by. It wasn't a house cat lol. Do not drop any crumbs. Be careful.

Thank you my friend. I believe my bag is definitely to heavy. I had lower back surgery Oct of last year. Ever since this trip I have a little back pain again. I hope I didn’t do any damage. Anyways I’m working on lightening my load. 🙂
You'll find walking and talking is about conditioning and breath control. You'll get used to it. You don't have to be in tip top shape. Yes as a first time or"amateur" backpacker you'll maks gewr choices and changes. What tent do you have?
Thank you, yeah I forgot to link the tent. It’s from Amazon and its brand is ( Desert Fox) . Not sure what rating I’m giving it just yet. Maybe another overnight trip I can verify if it’s going to be a good one or not.🙂
👍👍👍 .. nice 😊. 'Out of Breath' .. slow down. You'll get wherever a little later .. and not by as much as feared .. or .. leave a wee bit earlier 😊. 'New Gear' .. that's what Balconies and (friends, if need be) Gardens are for. Testing beforehand can save one one a heap of pain .. unless one is close to a safe 'bail out' spot. Stove .. good choice .. stable, and wise not using it on full power to boil up water. A lower heat setting may take a bit longer but one reduces 'heat wastage' going up the side of the pot and thus fuel. 'Budget' Gear .. not necessarily bad. As long as used within it's design intent, can be enjoyed indefinitely. Also if one decides that 'this is not for me', then not as much fuss letting it go. 'Condensation' .. always a factor .. no matter how pricy the tent. Leaking Tent. 'Garden Testing' .. even using a garden hose can identify trouble areas. Often some Seam Sealing can solve the problem. Tarp over cheap tent .. not a bad idea. Personally, I'm not a 'Freeze Dried' meal fan .. for normal camping. Inter alia, Cost, for me, being a factor. I often prepare / pre-cook / freeze, where possible my meals beforehand and then just finish them off on site. More fun and economical. A very nice Post .. thank you .. and definitely a motivator for others to get out and test the water. Of course, this post gets an enthusiastic 👍. Subscribe? I'll check out some of your other Posts and if they're as enjoyable to watch as this, probably yes 😊. A good share .. take care ..
Keep it up and honest! The Army told us that one can comfortably carry approximately 1/3rd of their body weight when back-packing. Use your packframe's hip restraints and the shoulder straps to help balance and distribute your load's weight. If the weight feels like its too much, it is and can hurt you.

Hey C J I do a little camping in the winter with my dog Tucker you might enjoy those with temps as low as -20 one night lol. Even had my tent flooded and the floor covered in ice on another occasion lol.
@@tuckerandi I have yet to camp in that type of temperature, the coldest I’ve camped in is 17 degrees. We didn’t get any snow this year other than up high on the mountains, but I’m definitely looking forward to some snow camping sometime.
@@NikkiTV2023 yeah snow was late arriving this year here too and left early really strange winter , yet we did have 86 cm in one storm and that was a fun walk to the camp for Tucker and I lol. Luckily a Moose had walked a section of the trail that had some snow broken down for Tucker who was walking ahead , as he always does lol.
Camping solo. Sitting in a tent late [ summer / autumn afternoons ] moving awkwardly around in an attempt to avoid the wet patches of my t-shirt. That cushion-effect sound of the stove and the tent's outer layer reducing me and my equipment to the colour: orange. A cup of tea - I'm from a piece if civilisation called Edinburgh - and a siesta while , somewhere in the near distance , voices of people with my mind set and Bing Crosby laidbackness, float from tree top to tree top. Sitting in a tent is, and will always be, comfortably addictive - with or without a cup of tea.

This is the stuff I enjoy , outdoors, camping pretty much anything outdoors so you have an instant subscriber here. Turned on notifications so I won't miss future videos and will be watching older videoa over tine. I'm using a broken Tripod at the moment as well lol, although it does work a little but I have to be careful because it falls apart almost lost it in the fire a couple of times lol. That oven bag looks like a great idea. I'm yet to order off Temu but I'm hearing great things about some products and the odd negative but thats expected everywhere. Vestibules on a tent is great for times like that when the rain won't quit lol. Two puppies showing up in the morning was a nice surprise. Great first time solo camp, looking forward to more.

@@ChrisCollins001 love these kind of comments where others tell me of their adventures 🙂
Yes Miranda was the RUclipsr I got that idea from.

I absolutely agree about Temu!!

try out those exofficio type long sleeve, quick drying shirts and pants/shorts. those cotton shirts, pants, ect get feeling completely disgusting after a few minutes or days, depending on the humidity, ect. your comfort level will go way up losing anything cotton for wicking/synthetic type clothes while hiking and sleeping. good luck with your backpacking 👍

Be careful.
Wow thank you so much for all of the advice. 🙂

@@tom-ehill2713 hello friend 🙂
Thank you, feedback is always welcome here!🙂
Keep it up and honest! The Army told us that one can comfortably carry approximately 1/3rd of their body weight when back-packing. Use your packframe's hip restraints and the shoulder straps to help balance and distribute your load's weight. If the weight feels like its too much, it is and can hurt you.
Oh wow, thank you so much for this advice, it’s always appreciated here in this channel🙂

Wow this was like reading poetry. 😊
