Hello! I work with young children, some diagnosed and others who are not. I was watching these videos to work towards a better understanding of how to teach them more efficiently. In this video, you talked about the different types of reinforcement. In the last few scenarios the child was not interested in the given reinforcement. I was wondering how I would work through that? Would it be best to give them the reinforcement that they want in that moment- like jumping? Or should I try to have them ease into sitting down and playing (a tangible reinforcement as opposed to automatic)? If so, how could I do that? I teach martial arts so I have a curriculum to teach and certain skills to have them practice; if they no longer respond to verbal reinforcements, how could I get them back on track and refocus their attention? Would something like a brain break be most effective or something else along those lines? Thank you for these videos, I’m learning a lot!
Hello, thank you for your kind comment. Thank you for sharing about your child. It would be good to understand the function of his behavior. From what you have explained, he may be engaging in what we usually call as a self-stimulatory behavior with the reinforcers and there are ways to manage that. To find out more about how to determine the function of behaviors as well as to manage them, do check out our Managing Challenging Behaviors Series here: ruclips.net/video/zMPXW7C7EnM/видео.html We hope you will find the resource helpful. Thank you and have a good day!
Hi, thank you for reaching out. You are most welcome and we hope you have found our videos helpful. Most children, not only those on the spectrum, generally do enjoy songs and music time which can be a great tool that we can use to build engagement. We would encourage exposing your child to a variety of songs and if they are requesting for the same songs over and over again, we encourage to ensure clear communication on the start and end of the activity. We hope that this has been helpful. If you would like to find out more specific strategies for your child, kindly reach out to us at enquiries@autismmalaysia.com and our team will be able to get in touch with you. Thank you.
What if my child use his words to ask for tablet to watch while eating ? Should I give it to him ? I normally say to him good speaking good job for using your words and give him tablet to let him know that he needs to communicate to let me know what he wants
Hello Bell Bell, thank you for your question! Good job applying the principle of reinforcement using both tablet and praising your son at the same time. We understand some parents might feel concerns over their children watching devices while eating as well, so it is really a question of what skill is more important to you at the time - to teach him to request, or teach him to eat at the table without needing a device? If it is the former, then it is good to prioritise rewarding nice requesting first even for the tablet. The second goal can be targeted at a later time when your son is confident with requesting and can also tolerate waiting for his tablet time. Hope this helps!
Is it ok to say, once we finish this we'll watch youtube.. or is it like bribing? How can I talk to my child about reinforcement for him to do the task.. or no need to tell him about the reward just give it after task?
Hello, thank you for reaching out. We would encourage using visuals to communicate that he will first need to do his task, then get his reward. It will serve as a motivation for him to finish his task when he visually sees what he will be getting. You can do so by using a simple First Then Board which you can learn more about in our Teaching Cooperation Series here: ruclips.net/video/vCDiYq1W1PA/видео.html We hope that this is helpful!
