In this Helm Boots review, I take a close look at the Hollis. It's a blend between Helm's dressy Zind, and the rugged Marion.

The Helm Boots Hollis has a solid balance between a workwear aesthetic and a more dressy, narrow shape.
Its two strong-suits are its quality leather and overall comfort with the lining and insole, but the rubber heel toplift is only 5mm, which will quickly present durability issues.

I also discuss two other alternatives: The Thursday Captain, and the Red Wing Iron Ranger.
If you like the rugged workwear aspect of the Helm Hollis and want to dial it up, I'd opt for the Red Wing Iron Ranger.
If you like the slim, sleek look and want to cut roughly $100 off the price tag, the Thursday Captain is a great choice (though the leather quality isn't quite the same).

The boots come with their own story as well, each one is named after someone, and the quote on the insole is another nice touch to make them stand out from other boot makers
Absolutely
I have the Railroad and Mueller from Helm and I prefer them over my Thursday Captains. I chose those over the Hollis as the narrower last was questionable with regards to their EE fit on my wide and high foot. The build quality from Helm seem to be more consistent than Thursday but with the Helm at $100 more some might be willing to take the risk with the Thursday. If you are a fan of CXL there are other models from Helm that use that. The mini-lug that the Hollis, Marion, and Railroad have are preferred to fineline sole on the Muller which make that model really an urban boot unless you resole them. The resole service from NuShoe that Helm uses give options to use any of the sole materials and types that Helm offers on its models so you could go with a harrier (like the Vibram wedge) or Vibram mini-ripple. Great video, thanks for the pros and cons.
Love this breakdown! I totally agree! Thank you for watching!
Good looking boot, didnt even know about those. Thanks
I have 2 pairs of Iron Rangers, 1 pair of Thursday Captains and 1 pair of Helm Hollis boots. The Hollis is my newest pair. They are incredibly comfortable right out of the box. The leather is beautiful and I got them for $ 221 for their Black Friday sale. They are not Iron Ranger quality but I am very, very happy with them. The olive Hollis is going to have a gorgeous patina over the next year.
Love my Helm Hollis
It's a great looking boot. I have had Helm on list for some time. Creasing gives them some character...another nice review.
Thank you for watching! Yeah, I'm excited to continue to break them in
Thank you so much for watching! Yeah, I'm excited to keep breaking them in
Brother...buy a pair if you can. You won't regret it...
What shoe care would you recommend for these boots?
What brand of denim jacket are you wearing? I like it!!
I recently bought The Lou. It's the most comfortable boot I've ever worn. Cushioned like a sneaker and fits like a glove. Amazing.
I have the onyx in Black suede really nice Boot
I have always preferred Goodyear welted stitching, or the storm welted stitch variation.
I am sure there [are] many brands out there that do not use leather mid-soles. For the asking [price] of these boots, I feel they should have a leather mid-sole, not a rubber one.
Very nice boots. I like them. I have a pair of Thursdays caption. Only 4 months in and my top lifts are wearing down. Wtf. Here in toronto it will cost my $30 cad to replace .
stop dragging your foot. learn to walk properly
Hey! Does their boots have that strong smell like Thursdays boots? (Inside the boot) i had to return my Thursdays Cap’s because I couldn’t deal with that smell.
Yes there is kinda of an odd smell. I think it's coming from the rubber outsole. Hopefully that will fade over time.
I just received my Helm Hollis boots in Olive. Haven't worn them outside yet, maybe today. Does it have a shank? Is it a true captoe like the IR's, or faux? BTW I got them for $206 on their Black Friday sale.
Do they run big ? I bought a different type of Helm shoe and had to get a smaller size but they fit great. Interested in buying some boots as well Thanks !
Yes I was a bit surprised because the advice was that they run true to size, but I find that they fit just like other heritage boots. I ordered a size 9D which is what I get with Red Wing etc. and just like those others they are just a bit roomy on me. I have to lace them tight and use a bit thicker sock. @@spursdynasty7378
This looks great! I’m looking for a cap toe work style boot
I was considering TrumanBootCompany Im not sure any recommendations?
I've heard Trumans are fantastic, though I don't have any experience with them yet. But they're definitely worth comparing!
I love my Helms hollis boots. They and the Zind are fantastic. You won't buy anything else after owning a pair of these. Even their customer service is crazy good. HELM boots are in a category of their own.
Thoughts 💭 on the origin Maine boot?
If you haven't seen it already, Carl Murawski's channel did a solid review of that one.
Origin are on my list to buy. Helm quality is on par with Origin but those are more of a casual boot. Helms can go either way...jeans or dressed up.
Helm told me to order my Red Wing Heritage size. They are in the mail and hope they are not too small. Can exchange but a pain in the butt if I have to.
So, was the size right? Same as RW?
@@d05wtt yes
Would you choose these over the Thursday Captains?
No, I think I'd stick with the Captains. The price is better and the style is a little more streamlined
To each his own brother. I have captains and a pair of Helms hollis and zinds. Captains are rubber 100 percent cork and rubber soled. These, muller, zinds from Helm all have stacked leather soles which isnt even a comparison for quality. I would buy a pair of Helms over any Thursdays or Redwings. Helm quality, heft and unique touches stand apart from others boots costing twice as much. No offense but this guy didn't research enough about Helm as a company. That all of their boots sneakers are handmade. Their resoling program that's NOT just about going to your town cobbler and slapping on a random sole for 20.00. You even can change styles of soles on any pair of helm boots with no extra charge over their usual resoling fee. You pay 100.00 for essentially restoring your patina'd boots or changing soles for a new look. I've had my pair of hollis for years and i haven't had to resole yet and I'm a heavy walker. Seriously incomplete review on an amazing boot and company. If you want an everyday boot that is ordinary and can't afford a 100.00 resoling every few years get Thursdays. Also Thursdays tend to be inconsistent quality wise. I had a pair fall apart after 3 months. Both pairs of Helms I own have aged beautifully bc I do as they recommend to care for them. It's simple...If you want incredible product quality, customer service and a pair of big boy boots get Helm.
Yes, it’s better quality in my opinion. Leather is superior as well..
Is that brown or teak?
This, I want to know
Only 6 eyelets...whie line is distracting...too much tongue shows...appear as Thursday seconds...not worth $295.
Thursday boots are not as good as these. If a white line is distracting, then that’s an attention span problem. You want cheap quality, which is a non starter..
Just bought some Helm boots. I own Thursday Captains as well. The Helm boots are on another level. Mine needed minimal breakin and are very comfortable but the biggest difference is the quality of the leather. They’re very nice and high quality compared to the Captain’s in my opinion but just below a premium brand like Grant Stone. But for the discounted price I’d buy a pair of Helms over Thursday right now.
What happened to Helm? They have abandoned Goodyear welting, American materials and manufacturing, and maintaining quality control. For those that remember the Helm of four+ years ago, this seems to be a cash grab. As for the review, don’t sell out, man. If it isn’t great, say so. This is $150 boot, not a $300 boot. You know better. I’ve seen your earlier reviews.
