A surprising wonderful mix of classical, jazz, tango and dreamy music!! Thanks for watching! 🥰
Yu've got the tango there. bravo, there are some bossanova influences too, I see it like a sort of latin infused prog. The bass tone you hear is the fantastic Pedro Aznar "fretless" bass.
You should react to Charly García as solist .is amazing.
I'm glad you commented on the tango section. Seru is an amazing band. You should also react to Charly´s solo career. I also recommend Spinetta and his bands Pescado Rabioso and Invisible. I like your reactions
Pedro Aznar's bass sounds like this because it is fretless. A genius.
Thanks for the info. Definitely will hear more from SG!
Thanks Jaco Pastorius 🙂
Serú Girán has long been on my radar to have a deeper look, but it's one of those things you keep postponing, with an additional reason I'll talk about below. Here in Brazil we are border neighbors of Argentina, have intense trade with each other (both countries are among the other's top trade partners), we have an EU-like common market and freedom of residence and work (though not yet without border and customs controls, but we don't even need a passport, an ordinary domestic ID card is enough), and we're always spending our vacations in each other's country (and loving it, as each country has what the other lacks and offers different experiences).
Despite a supposed rivalry that's more humorous and based on soccer (a national passion in both countries, which have both won a lot of World Cups and have contributed with many of the best soccer players in history) than a serious thing, in reality we get along very well and depend a lot on each other. Rivalry or not, I challenge you to find a Brazilian who's been to Buenos Aires and doesn't find it one of the most fabulous cities on earth (which it most definitely is!) or doesn't talk with stars in the eyes about the Andes mountains and Patagonia's cold deserts and glaciers (I've been to a penguin colony there, no less! 🐧😍🥰), or an Argentine who doesn't love Brazil's beaches, tropical nature exuberance, and "savoir-vivre".
Yet not only do we hardly know anything about Argentine music here (other than old tango master Carlos Gardel and some Astor Piazzolla, both long dead and not representative of contemporary Argentine culture), but it gets worse: it's hard to even get INFORMATION about Argentine music (and contemporary culture in general) here. The language barrier (Portuguese in Brazil, Spanish in Argentina) is no excuse, because we consume a lot of English-language music, and Brazilian music is fairly popular and well-known in Argentina, which makes this state of things even more unfair. Most Brazilians have never heard of Serú Girán, and I only have because of Pedro Aznar's ASTOUNDING vocal work with Pat Metheny in the 1980s (particularly "First Circle", an absolute masterpiece of an album, and I highly recommend the jaw-dropping title track, both in the studio and the live in Montreal versions with Aznar). You have no idea of what that man's voice can do! I became a fan of Aznar and that made me curious about Serú Girán, but information is so hard to get here that one doesn't know where to start.
Well, I LOVED "A los Jóvenes de Ayer"! It reminded me a lot of Premiata Forneria Marconi (or PFM for short, my TOPMOST favorite prog band, and this is saying something!) because of the great musicianship and constant musical surprises and "plot twists". At least from this sample, PFM is more exuberant and emotional (they're Italian, after all!), and Serú Girán is more cerebral, but they're definitely great and I want to learn a lot more about them.
Wow, that's surprising, since you're neighboring countries...Glad you enjoyed this Seru song, and hope you enjoy what else you discover or what I may react to in the future....
First time hearing this. Thank you so much Brandon. I love it.
Nice! So glad you enjoyed it!
Argentina has almost no rival in rock & pop music... pure exquisite quality and variety.
Welcome to Argentina's music.
Nice! Thank you so much!
@@retroreactions.... And... you will get many many subs btw
That would be nice! ☺
It's a electric Fretless bass. Sublime. 👏👏👏
Thanks Mario!
Hey, if you like soft music you should check out a song call "Eiti leda", made by the same group.
Thanks Camilo for the suggestion!
Omg! What a nice surprise to see you enjoying my people's music!!! I'll make sure to send you other recommendations!
Hello! Thanks so much for watching, was def a treat!
Charly is the greatest, absolute genius ✌️🇦🇷
Yes, I'm learning that quickly! Thanks for watching Elizabeth!
Lyrics of the song by Serú Girán "A Los Jóvenes De Ayer" To The Young People of Yesterday
At a glance you can see
Like drunks in the corner of some tango
the young of yesterday
They dress up nicely, they wear a toupee
They kiss all the time and mourn the past
Like an old lady in a matinee
Look at them, look at them, they're up to something
Rogues, rogues, rogues, maybe they're after power
Look after them, look after them, they're kind of harmless
Tell 'em, tell 'em, they're our new Dorian Grey
In a taxi at SADAIC
With their family Sunday tans
And their kermesse faces
Great values of yesterday
They'll be the youngsters of always
The eternal ones, the ones that appear on T.V.
Pedro Aznar is a huge bass player. He worked with Mat Metheny.
Thanks!
Pat Metheny
Welcome to the Serú Girán and Charly García's rabbit hole, next from Serú "La Grasa de las Capitales" and from before Serú it was "La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros" Charly's pure prog band from which I propose "Obertura 777" and "Hipercandombe".
Hi there! Thanks for being first here today! 🥇 Sounds like an interesting rabbit hole for sure! I will add your suggestions to my spreadsheet...thanks!
@@retroreactions....
@@retroreactions.... Great reaction !!!! more Seru Girán !!! Big hug ! greetings from Argentina!!!
@@retroreactions.... From the first "La Máquina de hacer pajaros" album (1976) I warmly suggest you the sweet and brief ballad "Como mata el viento norte", the hot jazz-funk of "Boletos, pases y abonos" or the romantic and spectral journey of "Ah, te vi entre las luces"
😊😊😊
The bass is a fretless bass. Pedro Aznar is an amazing Argentinian bass player
Thank you for this beautiful reaction... Seru Giran was perhaps the best progressive rock band in Latin America... Argentina has had a great rock tradition since the 60's... I recommend Seru Giran to the bands Invisible (Ruido de Magia song) Spinetta Jade (Digital Ayatollah song) La Maquina de Hacer Pajaros (Ah te vi entre las luces song) Crucis (pollo frito song) .... !!!!!! big hug!
Hi christian! Thank you so much for watching, for the compliments and the suggestions! Hugs back from the US!!
Another absolute first for me. I’m kinda mixed about it…. I certainly liked it. I’ve always liked jazz, classical etc. I really enjoyed the bass… one of several standouts!
Thanks for giving it a shot...let's see later what else they offer....
Here’s an update for you buddy! I gave a listen to the entire “Bicicleta” album. I see it’s their 3rd album , but the oldest that I found on Spotify. I really enjoyed it, particularly the last two tracks. “Tema De Nayla” (Nayla’s Theme) had such a good jazzy vibe and has soooo much incredible electric piano throughout. The last track “Encuentro Con El Diablo” (Encounter With The Devil) is loaded with great guitar and such a funky beat. I’m definitely going to look into more of their music.
Another observation…. after listening to Encuentro Con El Diablo a few times, something sounded somewhat familiar. You really need to listen to the Tommy Bolin track “Post Toastee” from 1976, to compare some of the funky sections.
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it...I will add those 2 to my list..you know I 100% trust your musical judgement!!
In 1977 Charly and Lebón participated in a debate in the newspaper La Opinión with great tango singers who accused them of being foreigners for playing rock.
This issue is partly a response to those attacks. They criticize the musicians of the past for their contradiction between their old ideals and what they ended up being.
4 Genios!!! El rock argentino es único!!!! 🎸 🎹 🎶🔝👏
¡Sí! ¡Me alegro de haberlo descubierto! ¡Gracias por mirar!
Great review! Im looking forward to watch your next reaction. I'd recommend "ah te vi entre las luces" by La Maquina de hacer Pajaros, yet another Charly Garcia's 70s progresive band
Charly is amazing aznar too. Please more from rock argentino
Thanks for watching!
¡Genial! ¡Estoy emocionado de escuchar más!
The best band from Argentina. With 4 rock heroes.
YES! Thanks for watching diego 🙂
ROCK ,JAZZ , TANGO , CANDOMBE , BOSSA TODO EN UNO = SERU GIRAN ❤❤❤
¡Perfecto! Gracias sergio
Charly Garcia, piano, keyboards, voices and composition; David Lebon, guitar, voice and composition; Pedro Aznar, bass, keyboards, voice and composition and Oscar Moro, drums; The bass sounds like that because it doesn't have frets, like Jaco Pastorius's, also it must be said that after Seru Giran, Pedro was called to play in the Pat Metheny Group.
Seru giran ♥️♥️♥️🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷the Best from ARGENTINA 🇦🇷🇦🇷
Thanks so much for watching!
Went to a pool party!!!! Love this. Right up my alley. ♥🎶🎶I love the fast and slowness.
Glad you enjoyed!!
Intriguing, very interesting. Very nice….vocals are lovely. How do you get that sound on the bass? I’ve heard it on other jazz albums from this period…embarrassed that I cannot remember the artist. Edit: it’s on Joni Mitchell’s album Hajira…..Jaco Pastorius. Have you ever heard anything from that wonderful, album, Brandon? A wonderful synthesis of folk and jazz….with Pat Methany, Jaco Pastorius….and others. I would like to suggest the song Amelia to you, if you haven’t heard it.
Pedro Aznar was the bass player, he was only 21 years old when he played this and Pat Methany happened to be in Argentina and saw him playing live and made him join his band.
Never heard...will add to list! Thanks
Charly's entire musical career in his different bands and solo, is a one way trip. All melodies, arrangments, etc. are the product of his genius.
La grasa de las capitales 🙌
Bro, I was out, I came back home and... I found this reaction ? r u kidding me ? LOL
you hit me hard with this mega surprise!
here we go...
Serú Girán was the best latinamerican band ever, they weren't only prog, also jazz fusion and pop rock, Charly Garcia is a crazy genius, who at the age of 12, yes... at the age of 12, he was a piano teacher, the heart and main composer of the band. David Lebon fantastic guitarist, composer and singer, he shares with Charly the lead voice of Serú in the short discography of the band, 1978/1982 (in 1992 they rejoined to released their last studio album), Pedro Aznar, an absolute fretless bass genius, also singer and composer, Oscar Moro R.I.P wonderful drummer.
There is a lot to discover about this superband, knowing your musical taste, these are my recommendations "Eiti Leda" (great prog song), do you want classic music and emotional ? ;), "Desarma y Sangra" so beautiful and... "Cinema Verité" incredible song.
Many thanks for the MEGA surprisse!
Did you think you were dreaming or seeing things? 🤣🤣😁
Thanks for the suggestions, hope this made your night hehe...
@@retroreactions.... I was wondering if someone slipped a hallucinogen into my drink at dinner. 😅😅
😂
this is a nice reaction!! thank u for listening to argentina's music
That was an orgasmic reaction
Wow, haha, thank you so much jose!!
Our drummer from Serú is Óscar Moro one of the best drummers from Argentina, he died on July 11. we have the drummers day in his honour,
Pedro Aznar, one of the best bassist in Argentina and Latam, he play a lot of bass but in some cases he plays with a fretless, and he is the master at it.
David is the guitarrist not only the best he is in one phrase: UN PAN DE DIOS, the sweatest guy in the world.
Of Course, Charly García is the best pianist of the WHOLE ARGENTINA, HE HAS THE ABSOLUT EAR, THE CHAOS, THE MAD PRETTY. HE IS...
Hi Retro Reactions. Thanks for your reaction. For me Seru Giran it's a one of the greatest band of my country. You're on the shore of a universe of music from my country. I'd like to suggest you another great band like Vox Dei and their song "Genesis". Greetings from Argentina.
Pedro Aznar played bass later at Pat Metheny Group. Everyone great musicians.
Es una obra de arte
Si!!
Spot on buddy! Seru Giran was all about the progressive sound from 4 amazing players. There’s much to discover from this band and Garcia’s previous venture“la máquina de hacer pájaros “

Hermosa reacción
Gracias Eduardo!
Excelente. GRACIAS DESDE ARGENTINA.
Pedro Aznar: Fretless Bass.
Exelente reacción. gracias ..
I love your style of reviews and analysis of songs. You just opened the can of worms there with those guys! Seru Giran, and all the subsequent interactions of these fantastic musicians have to show to the musical world. After Seru Giran, just a note to mention "Pedro Aznar ended up playing for years and touring with Path Metheny". The other members specially Charly with his solo career and David created and developed their own genres.
If you want your mind to blow up, just listen to "La grasa de las capitales", also from Serú Girán.... It's a stronger song but with a lot of the subtle and complex things you seem to have enjoyed in this one....
Hello! Wow, sounds very intriguing/enticing! I will definitely add your vote for that one to my list! Thank you
TRY "LA GRASA DE LAS CAPITALES! OF SERU GIRÁNPLEASE
OK, added that one to my list...thanks Ricardo!

I hope listen Luis Alberto Spinetta, Sui Generis, Vox Dei, El Reloj, La Mono and much more bands
this is like argentinian beatles stuff--
Hi Brandon, some of guys already summarized the previous history of this progressive rock band or supergroup from the late 70s, 80s. You just have to dive into the previous group La Maquina de Hacer Pajaros (The Birds Making Machine) just add that among their influences are also Weather Report and PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) You will notice the great bassist Pedro Aznar plays his bretless bass emulating the sound of his idol of those times Jaco Pastorius.
Molto bene grazie frufru-xjgjkhcf
you know this thing that happens from time to time, that you can instantly relate a song to a completely different one in space/time?? call me crazy but that happens to me with 'A los Jóvenes de Ayer' and Prince's 'Little Red Corvette'. Maybe is some chord progression or the harmony, I don't really know.
also the instrumental part that sounds 'asian'-like in this song reminds me to Tokyo Dream of Allan Holdsworth
Interesting! I love when music references other music in one's mind...
Excellent reaction..
Serù Giran Great Band.
Please Check this other Great Band of Sud América.
Los Jaivas Song Arauco tiene una Pena or Tarka y Okarina Versión of LP
Big regards from Chile South America.
Thanks so much Pablo for watching and for the suggestions!
It would be great if have them translate for you the tetter of the song in spanish.because is very nice.
It´s a fretless bass.
Please, spanish subtitles 😀
Will keep that in mind for next time I react to them 🙂
