There is so much great music from around the world that we never hear because it's not in English. This was outstanding! Thanks for listening to EVERYTHING.
Insanity. That's what it is. Well, Charly García (the leader) is an absolute genius. First Piano concert he gave he was FOUR years-old. He didn't reach the pedals. His parents had sent him to learn piano when they discovered he had perfect pitch. At the age of 12, he got a degree in Piano, Theory and Solfege. His musical career is BRILLIANT. He's composed masterpieces that could make you feel guilty for not having the opportunity (or the awareness) to get to know this ALIEN before.
No waaaaaaaaay. If You liked this song You should listen to Charly García's other bands and his solo career. During the seventies he formed various bands and changed his sound several times, from folk to prog to new Wave. During the 80s he was the biggest pop Star in Argentina. Overall, he has a very interesting career, definitely would recommend checking it out! Also, Charly had classical training and is a god coming up with gorgeous melodies
@@JustJP that’s an amazing album Justin! Any chance you could do a “second reaction” to that one? (If that makes any sense at all) Anyways, here’s one I’m almost sure you didn’t hear up till now: “Crucis - Pollo Frito”. Yes, the title “Fried Chicken” is as silly as it gets. But I promise you, the music is not! You mentioned you don’t like flashy/indulgent prog music. I’m with you on that one (that’s why I respect, but don’t really listen to ELP after all). But this one is GREAT. It’s amazing how many great prog bands there were in South America in the 70’s. It should well be its own gente, alla Rock Progressivo Italiano. Also -and it was not a matter of timing, that is, bands here were not late to the scene- prog was alive here way into the late 70’s, as opposed to the Anglo world. If you read this, and by this point it’s very unlikely, Seru Giran’s 2nd album “La Grasa de las Capitales” is a treat. Specially the title track. Pedro Aznar, the fretless bassist, was only 19-20 when he recorded it. His performance is so amazing that Pat Metheny called him up to play. Pedro said “you already have a bassist”, to which Pat answered “I want you to play anything. What about percussion?” I think that says it all…
MAn, I teared up. As everytime you manage to present a song or band I have a deep connection with. I accompgnied my dad in 87 on his last trip to his birthplace in northern Germany. There we were at my dad's cousin who had married an Argentinan women 30 years ago and his son, of my age introduced us to some Argentinian things, music, maté and other diverse stuff. We had very long nights boozing, spliffing (I don't smoke but he did) and listening to Seru Giran and Grobschnitt all the time. Good times. We listened mostly to the "La Pepperina" album.
If Weather Report was a Prog band. There was a melodic part in the intro that borrowed from an old jazz standard, the name of which I can’t recall. A fretless bass always draws me in. Great stuff I really enjoyed this very much. Never heard of this band. Excellently beautiful surprise. Thanks.
@@Hartlor_Tayley I misunderstood your comment I’m afraid! I quoted the title of my fave Weather Report song - no idea what the jazz number is- JP may know though! 👍Have you heard A Remark you Made?
@@HippoYnYGlaw lol. I’m sure I’ve heard it but I can’t recall it. That song title didn’t register with me at all, whole thing went over my head. It was a great reply, wish I got the joke at the time. Thanks for clarifying, it’s cracking me up. Lol.
The bass player here is Pedro Aznar, he was 17 years old when joining the band, from playing like this. The band played at Rock In Río festival, the story goes that the main hotel accomodating the bands were full so some bands were placed in other hotels, and Seru Giran ended up in the same hotel than Path Metheny Group, back then with Jaco Pastourius (Weather Report bassist) in the formation. A journalist that knew both bands' members introduced them to each other, daring to meanly introduce Aznar to Pastorius as "the best bass player in the World" (which was the way Pastorius liked to introduce himself). Aznar hero was Jaco: he stripped the freets from his bass to be able to play like Jaco did, so Aznar recalls feeling ashamed from the introduction. It seems both bands members befriended. Aznar wanted to study in Berkeley, so eventually, Metheny invited him to be part of his band to play in the US while studying (although not in the bass position), leading to the dissolution of Seru Giran.
Quite refreshing to hear this style of Progressive Rock - reminds me of the contemporary group Camel (their 1979 song "Who We Are" is a good example) - touches of flair and exuberance, but not enough to overbear the work.
thanks for this reaction to Seru Giran !!!! for me the best rock band in Argentina... this band has 3 multi-instrumentalists and singers (Garcia, Lebon, Aznar) and one of the best drummers in our history... I recommend that you react to the song "Noche de Perros "From the album "La Grasa de las Capitales" the instrumentation is brilliant...Aznar's bass...Lebon's heartrending guitar solo....and this is just the beginning of Argentine progressive rock...you will be surprised a lot for the level of bands that we have since the 70s ... big hug from Argentina
I liked it. The vocals, lyrical melodies and song arrangement remind me a bit of 70s and 80s things by Angelo Branduardi (e.g. his songs La Luna, La Pulce D'Acqua or Cogli La Prima Mela) a wonderful Italian acoustic artist, although where this is more jazzy and eclectic at times, Branduardi is more catchy and folky
Angelo Branduardi has some greatalbums. The more ‘modern’ sounding albums I like best. For example the album that has is named Angelo Branduardi. Opens with a ‘fat’ drum.
Beautiful song, amazing band. Thanks for reacting to it. Another great prog song from Serú is "La Grasa de las Capitales". And if you liked the classical influence, i recommend "Cinema Verité". Cheers!
I can't believe you reached Seru Giran. One of my favorites bands of all times, one of the best bands from Argentina. Saludos from Buenos Aires! And thank you very much!
I have to recommend you "LA GRASA DE LAS CAPITALES" or "EITI LEDA" also from Seru Giran. And if you wanna listen some other Argentinian prog-rock you should listen to "La máquina de hacer pájaros - Hipercandombe"

Feels like more jazz and classical influences more than rock, not that it is a problem. A bit of a potpourri of musical ideas performed with skill and imagination. It settles down into something more coherent. edited to add that you should listen to at least one more track with us. I am interested to hear where they go from here. edited again to note that September is early spring or late winter in Argentina (iirc).
To Argentinean ears, this song both for its lyrics and music is a tribute to the great Astor Piazzolla, who was a worldwide recognised musician (also Argentinian). On another side, Argentinian progressive rock is very difficult to describe, but very easy to feel.
History goes that one day Serú Giran band members were at their Record Label Offices for some meeting, and while waiting they saw the walls lined with portraits of previous generations of popular and legendary Argentine artists, mostly tango & Folk musicians and singers. GRACIAS Justin!!! I am happy that you liked it, Pedro Aznar met Pat Metheny in 1980 in Rio de Janeiro, at the International Jazz Festival where they were both playing, he went backstage to say hello and express his admiration, he also gave him a tape with some recordings... 2 years later Pat participated in 2 songs for the album that Pedro was recording in Boston and later Aznar was invited to participate to the European tour of Pat's band. Charly Garcia (keyboards & voice) is an absolute crazy genius, one day he jumped into a pool from the roof of the hotel where he was staying. Another recommendation of Seru, is without a doubt "Eiti Leda", the first song of the first album in 1978.
The lyrics talks about the tango generation of our country, with a Charly Garcia 's point of view metaphorically of them, sadaic for example is the place where all the artist copyrights their material, and they are crying because basically the tangos are about sad subjects of life like love and broken dreams
"Los jóvenes" actually means "the young people" or maybe "the teenagers". In German "die Jugendlichen" or "die jungen Menschen". 🇩🇪 "My youth" is "mi juventud" 🇪🇸 or "meine Jugend" 🇩🇪.
"A los jovenes de ayer" ("To the youth of yesterday") is the first song from the album Bicicleta, by the band Serú Girán, published in 1980. The song was composed by Charly García and is sung by himself. In 1977 Charly and Lebón (rockers) participated in a debate in "La Opinión" with Edmundo Rivero, Osvaldo Pugliese, Ariel Ramírez and Leda Valladares (Tangueros), in which the tangueros accused them of being foreigners. This theme is partly a response to those attacks. They criticize the musicians of the past for their contradiction between their old ideals and what they ended up being. The music is tango, with which many tangueros felt attacked, but others felt it as a tribute. "Great Values of Yesterday" is a reference to the program "Great Values of Today and Always" (TV Show about Tango) Originally there were two separate songs: "Bicicleta", the introduction ("that half classical, half tango instrumental" according to Charly) which is also the introduction to the album, and "A los jovenes de ayer" the sung part. (from SeruGiranFandom)
Wow! Now that's a group I never thought you'd ever react to. Plenty of others too from the 70s, from Los Iracundos, Silvio Rodriguez, Sandro, different type of music to discover.
Perhaps you haven't realized but after the intro there are some jazzy sequences and tango cadences, usual references in some of Charly Garcia's compositions. Some of us found things from Weather Report and Premiata Fornernia Marconi among others.
Wow, I can't believe that you reacted to Serú Giran, that's one of the best prog rock bands from my country Argentina. I highly recommend Bubu Anabelas, if you love Zappa, King Crimson, Stravinsky, Magma and bitches brew you are gonna love Anabelas (Album by bubu)
Oh, i'm from Argentina, Bs As :D!! But i'm more of the Beatles, Hendrix, The Doors, or pink Floyd. Great reaction btw, could You try "seminare" by this dame band? You won't regret it!
Man... I love your face... you love music for real... Its like you are listening, super amezad, and then again, another surprise, ando your eyes glow again and your smile is bigger. sorry my bad english
Good observation: UK where contemporary of them and a supergroup such as Serù was in the local scene. Talking 'bout some great "fretless" songs by Serú I suggest "Eiti Leda", "Autos, jets, aviones, barcos", "Perro andaluz" and "Paranoia y soledad" sung and composed by Pedro Aznar in himself.
South american prog rock!!! Very good. The bit at 5:00 when you say "What is this?" sounds to me a little Gerwshin in style. Greetings from Chile (and of course, Los Jaivas is a must if you want to dig in other southern classic 70s rock)
So many things to say, I'm peruvian who lived in NY for 30 years, I went to see Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, Charly Garcia (1987) etc and I'm Spinetta fan but Seru Giran and Spinetta Jade are the bet bands of prog rock in spanish and "A los jovenes de ayer" is the best spanissh prog song ever! Greetings from Peru!
Nice reaction! I see your Steely Dan vinyl in the background. You know Larry Carlton was hired by Garcia like a sesion musicien for the Disc Clics Modernos... you can hear him in the song No soy un extraño that is a really smoth song
Bravo - givin us alt-cultural stuff way out of the ordinary. The vocals , once they appeared, were exceptionally beautiful. This sounded like a cross between 10CC , Animation by John Anderson and well, I'm not sure. Brand X? A trifle rich in it's arrangement but YEAH I'd buy it deffo coz there are many layers to appreciate - despite the slightly Dated Production , not helped by the noteworthy Fretlessly Unfashionable Bass Textures.
welcome to charly garcia, man. P. aznar and d. lebon are great musicians too. i would love to see your react on "la grasa de las capitales" (first song of same named album). you will really like it. charly also took part of a band named "la maquina de hacer pajaros", before seru giran. is even crazier than seru. greetings!
Excellente, Jorge. Muy bien! I liked it. Especially the bass. Hey, JP, for some amazing fretless bass with a Middle Eastern flavor mixed with female vocals and some flashes of hardcore, try Satya by Aghora.
Please react to "Autos, Jets, Aviones, Barcos" an amazing progressive Song with a south american Rythm, I am sure you will like it. The song is from the same band, Seru Giran.
Thanks for this reaction, they were an incredible band, this album and La Grasa de las Capitales, are great works, of a quality similar to the best prog rock bands in the world, the 4 musicians are really great.
I’m glad you liked Seru Giran... At the end of the video you tried to translate the lyrics of the song, but it seems to me that it will be very difficult to understand if you just focus on the word by word since the text of the song is plagued with cultural references, that in my opinion can only be understood by the Argentines of the musical environment, who lived in Buenos Aires during the 60s and 70s... The song laughingly mocks the old glories of the Argentine "Music Hall" of the 30s, 40s and 50s, which at the time when Charly García was a young musician, those old men of the past occupied all the cultural and television space and refused to accept that they had aged and that the tastes of the public were changing, and that new idols were disputing their reign... As the letters say: "They are always well dressed, and they wear a toupee" (small wigs to hide their baldness)... They are the ones that appear on television... They arrive at S.A.D.A.I.C (Sociedad Argentina de Autores y Compositores) inside large limousines... It should be noted that "they" went to SADAIC every month to collect their royalties, that the young musicians who sold more records than those old artists, and who normally didn't see the benefits, given that the distribution of those royalties was not fair at all... In fact SADAID was a mafia circle ruled by the old stars of show business and where it is very difficult to be part, especially if you had long hair and played electric guitars!
Hola, cómo estás? Espero que retomes el camino de Seru Giran, por favor, no te pierdas todas las canciones que faltan de ellos, porque te van a sorprender mucho
Hi!! If you liked Seru Giran I invite you to hear the chilean band Los Jaivas with the song "Mira Niñita". It is progressive latin folk rock. Los Jaivas is one of the greatest latin rock bands that are still doing concerts live. They started doing music in the 60's. From Los Jaivas: Mira Niñita, Sube a Nacer conmigo hermano, La poderosa Muerte. From Seru Giran: Eiti Leda, Seminare. Its leader Charly García did have several bands and a great solo career. Regards from Chile!! 🙂 PS: Argentinian and chilean rock was the best latin rock. It is a rabbit hole of music!
Greaaaat reaction. I've been following you in other reactions and this caught me off guard. One of the best argentinian bands. Regarding the lyrics: Piazzola, our huge modern tango composer, said disrespectfull things about rock young musicians. So, Charly Garcia response, in a perfect piazzolla style in the introduction of the theme, make this sarcastic comment on yesterdays youth, and how they were the avant garde untill something new comes up and then start talking like conservatives. AND THAT JOKE TOOK THIS SONG. So please , this band is a whole world, dont you miss it. If you like fretless basss.. pfffff
About the SADAIC acronim from the lyrics, it stands for "Sindicato Argentino de Autores, Interpretes y Compositores", Authors, Interpreters and Composer's Argentinian Union, enforced by law to police royalties protections, royalty taxing, and infringers' bussines closure: they have inspectors going from place to place where music is played to collect regalies based on attendance estimation, collecting from radios, TV and festivals (so yep, that powerful), to provide the afiliates with healthcare services and redistribute the leftover among afiliates accordingly with the amount of work published and their aknowledged sales or their shows's attendance. Back in the day it was led by older musicians that hoarded the mainstream market, depriving space to the rock bands whose work was misrepresented for their royalties share purpose, hence closing doors and opportunities. The song was addressed to this generation of musicians dominating the market by means of keeping a tight grip over the music bussiness.
Two more songs to react to: La grasa de las capitales and Autos, jets, aviones barcos. The first one, very progresive and odd, the second one, in a frenetic brazilian samba beat. You'll enjoy them for sure.
Also, if you like fretless bass (and you do), be sure to check out the short lived band 'The Firm' (Paul Rodgers and Jimmy Page). Especially the 1st album. Amazing sound all around and great fretless Bass by Tony Franklin. You would love that.
Hi, man! Did U enjoy Serú? U must try with Vox Dei an his opus The Bible, a conceptual work about that book that was accepted as a good album by the Vatican... although it isn't an religious disc. I suggest U listen the 1997 issue 'cause it sound better than the original. Greetings from Tucumán, Argentina 🇦🇷... and apologies about mi english. I learned it by myself.😔

This theme is partly a response to those attacks. They criticize the musicians of the past for their contradiction between their old ideals and what they ended up being. The music is tango, with which many tangueros felt attacked, but others felt it as a tribute.
"Great Values of Yesterday" is a reference to the program "Great Values of Today and Always" (TV Show about Tango)
Originally there were two separate songs: "Bicicleta", the introduction ("that half classical, half tango instrumental" according to Charly) which is also the introduction to the album, and "A los jovenes de ayer" the sung part. (from SeruGiranFandom)
Thank you for the info User :)
I love Pedro's work with Pat Metheny.
I would love for you to hear more of them with us!!
You absolutely need to listen to "la grasa de las capitales" or "hipercandombe" by la maquina de hacer pajaros (another band from the same vocalist)
Bubu is another argentinian band 😊
el mas grande de todos........
Oh, i'm from Argentina, Bs As :D!!
But i'm more of the Beatles, Hendrix, The Doors, or pink Floyd.
Great reaction btw, could You try "seminare" by this dame band? You won't regret it!
The dooooors
Man... I love your face... you love music for real... Its like you are listening, super amezad, and then again, another surprise, ando your eyes glow again and your smile is bigger. sorry my bad english
Thanks so much Andy :) Appreciate you watching (and your English was perfect!)
JustJP recomended this!!!
Ty Vamp! Hope you're having a lovely day over there in Peru! :D
Nice reaction! I see your Steely Dan vinyl in the background. You know Larry Carlton was hired by Garcia like a sesion musicien for the Disc Clics Modernos... you can hear him in the song No soy un extraño that is a really smoth song
You need to listen to "Ah, te vi entre las luces" by La maquina de hacer pajaros. You will love it!
Thought it a pleasant musical story.
A smoother, less radical Sparks.
Thanks !! Great , amazing
Now , i recommed " El capitán Beto ( Luis Alberto Spinetta )
Great!!!
Loved this, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it+
... jazz+rock+candombe(afro-latin rythm)+ tango+piazzola style = Serú Giran . Great Band, great argentinian musicians . Enjoy!
P. aznar and d. lebon are great musicians too.
i would love to see your react on "la grasa de las capitales" (first song of same named album). you will really like it.
charly also took part of a band named "la maquina de hacer pajaros", before seru giran. is even crazier than seru. greetings!
JP, you nailed with the lyrics. Is basic on relationship of both respect and sarcasm from the rock generation respect the old school of tango.
Whatching again your reaction, as a lover of this music, your walk is a honor jajjaa, great chanel!!!
Appreciated Martin!
Excellente, Jorge. Muy bien! I liked it. Especially the bass.
Hey, JP, for some amazing fretless bass with a Middle Eastern flavor mixed with female vocals and some flashes of hardcore, try Satya by Aghora.
Ok... Seru Giran "La grasa de las capitales"...
Soda Stereo - "Profugos (gira me veras volver)"... a rabbit hole, amazing!!!
❤❤
Please react to "Autos, Jets, Aviones, Barcos" an amazing progressive Song with a south american Rythm, I am sure you will like it.
The song is from the same band, Seru Giran.
Thanks for this reaction, they were an incredible band, this album and La Grasa de las Capitales, are great works, of a quality similar to the best prog rock bands in the world, the 4 musicians are really great.
MORE SERU GIRAN PLS
Tu reacción a este tema es maravillosa! you are a genius!
Argentina !
Hola!!! From to Argentina here! Listen Luis Alberto Spinetta Álbum Artaud-track "Cantatas de puentes amarillos" Dont lose!!!!
please react more seru giran!! most virtuous band of Argentina's rock history. Charly García is like a god of music here. Great reaction!!
PS: Argentinian and chilean rock was the best latin rock.
Please react to "Ah, te vi entre las luces" from La Maquina de hacer Pajaros!!!!!!!!
If you appreciate the fretless...check out Pedro on the track Eiti-Leda by Seru....Your jaw will drop
I love SERU GIRAN ...bass Pedro Aznar ❤
Gracias por reacciónar a la música argentina .
I enjoyed watching this video as much as when I first heard Serú Girán. Keep discovering it and you will love it. Like and sub.
Seru giran "la grasa de las capitales"🤯🤯
Please! React to "Noche de Perros - Seru giran" plesse!!! Great reaction!
Thanks....thanks....thanks...
The bass player was 18 yo when he recorded this piece...
Please react to la bengala perdida by Luis Alberto Spinetta
Excelente
Try some Triana. A spanish band. Anything from the "El patio" album.
charly genius!
And now...”La grasa de las capitales” you wont regret
ARGENTINA PAPÁ!!!!!!!
Friend, Seru Giran was a superband, the best of latinoamerican music. Four superhéroes, the best of all. Charly García, David Lebon, Pedro Aznar y Oscar Moro. Charly García write this incredible song. He is one of the best writers in music history. I recomend La grasa de las capitales, Eiti Leda, Seru Giran y Perro Andaluz. All Master piece
From the great Charly García, second only to Luis Alberto Spinetta.
Argentina 1978
