Question: I ended up getting the presets that you recommended in your other videos, i have a Sony a6300 and will shoot in raw and use the presets. In the end does it even matter what camera you use if you shoot in raw + use presets? i was wondering will the pics look different if i use a fuji.? I'm really feeling their colors and was thinking of switching cameras. i prefer fuji, but if i can keep my Sony, and get the same results than i wouldn't switch just yet. Im considering the Fuji X-S10. Thanks for your help/input.

I totally agree with you! I recently uploaded a new video where I talk about using the M50 with the Speed Booster and compare it to a full frame such as the EOS R...and towards the end of the video I expressed my thoughts about the M50 mark ii and...in short...I said almost exactly what you said! I believe Canon, with the mark ii is not targeting beginner movie makers, enthusiasts on a budget and vloggers...but rather...soccer moms and teenagers who want to upgrade from their phone or want a very expensive webcam...

I noticed that most discontent comments about the M50 mk II were mainly from people who own the M50. I do not own the M50 so I can't complain whatever Canon did or did not do on the mk II. I just checked the price of the M50 and it's $579 while the mk II is $599...the way I look at this is, if it's just a firmware update like what everyone is suggesting...then it's a $20 firmware update, which is not bad at all...As I said, I don't own the M50 so I can't complain..and I'm buying the mk II.

In other currencies it's way more expensive, I recently bought the original M50 cause its £650 for me, the mark II was over £1000 so the small upgrades wasn't really worth that extra cost.

I started looking into the M50 as my first mirrorless camera, primarily for use as a video device. I am looking at the Mark II but only because I don't already have an M50. If you have an M50 already, it looks as though this probably isn't worth upgrading to, but if you are like me and are looking at either as your first mirrorless camera then it might be worth it, especially if they are looking to cut off support for the Mark I M50 and you want a device that will continue being supported further down the road.

This might be the first time I've ever seen a company release a software update for $600.00. This is a new low for Canon and just smells like a cash grab from a mile away. Because as you said, probably 90%+ of the features in the new camera could easily be a software update for the original M50.
Hopefully Canon will AT LEAST leave the current webcam utility for the M50 and not phase it out so only the M50 Mark 2 works on it....because you know how they love to intentionally cripple some of other cameras so their more expensive cameras can be brought into the spotlight.
Anywho, great video as always Todd. Looking forward to more! =]

I am looking for a 2nd and possibly a 3rd camera. Should I just purchase another Canon M50?
I am new. Just starting out. Trying to provide good content that is interesting for my students at the high school level and at the college level.
As you can see, I am a full-time HS Teacher and College Professor part-time.
I already have a Canon M50, but I am trying to decide to get another camera (Canon M50 Mark II) or go outside my brand. I have an ATEM Mini and a Rodecaster Pro.
Trying to put out good quality video/audio content. Still learning. What are your thoughts?

    • @FulaanCreative
      @FulaanCreative 3 года назад

@@jsandrieux If you are a beginner I would say just get another canon m50. The reason is that the quality is probably more than enough for your aims and if you go outside of the canon lineup the cameras are not as easy to use. The canon cameras give you the most user friendly experience. If you venture off to any other brand besides Sony then you will also lose the good autofocus which really can set your workflow back. You could also look into renting cameras to try them out and then choosing what to buy after that. Hope that helps.

By all means, if you don't have an M50 and want one, the mark II is good news. But lets keep i sane.. for us that allready own an M50, we get some room in our budget not needing to spend money on a new camera yet, as the one we allready own still is a very good one. Mind that i own an EOS R, that has way to litle counts on it, cause of the versatility of the M50. I like having a small cheap excellent camera that fits in the top compartment of my backpack, that take very good photos, and doesn't cost more than a gopro. For me its the perfect balance between image/video quality, price and versatility.

All these "updates" are only software related, and aren't greedy in terms of processing power. This doesn't warrant the release a new "model". I love my M50, but Canon is almost recommending us to seriously look at other brands for our camera system going forward.

Sold my m50 a year ago after I used the Nikon z50 which I picked up. The main reason was the m mount, and my concern that it would be a dead end. The adapted lenses were unwieldy, and the evf was not great. Using the z50 with the FF evf, z mount lenses and similar body made me much more comfortable with the long-term investment. I think canon will probably migrate to an rf apsc line as the lenses are much cheaper than FF and it leads buyers to invest in the ecosystem and progress into bigger bodies. The m mount was a stopgap until canon can release apsc lenses for RF. Canon knows it's much easier to keep people in their system rather than attract new buyers and they are totally focused on RF, from stills to cine cameras. Nikon and canon seem to mirror each other. Nikon dropped the N1 mirrorless line, and I expect canon to drop m soon.
Similar things are happening on DSLR cameras as new models are getting less innovation. New camera sales are the life blood of these companies and they need to move people to new bodies and lenses
They should offer a return for $250 upgrade service where m50 users can send in their m50 to be upgraded to the mk2 if it's just software.

Good video summarising the lack of new features. I’m happy with the M50 but was contemplating upgrading, now I’m not sure if I will stay with Canon or switch to another brand. I can’t think of another Canon camera series where the difference between different models released was so minimal. I think the point you made about the future direction for the EOS-M series is more concerning and raises a question mark about whether to switch to Sony or Fuji as the EF-M lenses will be obsolete. The rumoured M7 might go some way to allay those concerns so will wait and see.

The improved battery life indicates to me that the DIGIC 8 is made on a smaller process node to improve battery life and also likely increase clock speed. A Digic 8 isn't just a digic 8. It's obvious that Canon uses different clock speeds (at a minimum) in different product with the same processor. If you think the Digic 8 in the M50 is the same as in the R I've got news for you. This processor upgrade is likely responsible for most of the improvements and is certainly responsible for the improved battery life. This is NOT just a firmware update.

Hey Todd, nice update video. Your update is better than the update on the M50 mkii. This is nothing more than a shameless attempt to milk the M50 sales without investing anything in the camera. A firmware update masquerading as a camera. I have the M50 and so disappointed with Canons antics. So much that I think the Fuji ZS10 might be my next upgrade.
Good news though, I saved £700 this week. I also wrote to Canon thanking them for being part of the future product review programme. I told them I had prepared the M50 mkii they sent me a while back and when they send out the firmware update I would be happy to review the camera. (The preparation was a sticker with "mkii" written on it I stuck to the M50. Lol.

My biggest concern now is that Canon will look at the media/community backlash and (presumably?) lackluster sales figures for this camera and interpret them as an indicator that people don't want any more EF-M products, when real takeaway here should be that they need to make more competitive bodies and lenses for the M line, not scrap (or continue to ignore) the whole system.

I liked your analysis of Canon’s marketing message. It’s a slick and compelling marketing message for new buyers, but upon analysis, there is nothing there to warrant calling the camera an upgrade for owners of the MKI.
It would be like Apple marketing the same Mac hardware as an “upgrade” where the only difference is the OS, and locking out earlier purchasers of identical hardware from upgrading to the new OS. With my 2012 iMac, I’ve recently reached the point where I can’t upgrade to the latest OS so that’s a pretty good run of free software upgrades over the years.
I think Canon is just trying to squeeze some extra sales out of an existing hardware product, perhaps before ditching it altogether. It’s not as if they need to recover the costs of re-engineering, and retooling the factory for the MKII.
I have the original M50, and I’m thinking about whether to invest in a Sigma lens for the M50, or hold off until it’s clear as to whether Canon will continue with the M series of cameras.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! I was originally looking at the M50 as a major upgrade from my iPhone camera, and liked the idea of being able to easily send them to my phone, and I liked that with it being mirrorless it's smaller and less bulky than a DSLR. However, with the Mark II coming out in just a few weeks I thought I'd wait to get that to make sure I'm getting the "latest and greatest". Now that it seems like this upgrade isn't that major, and the m50 is nearly three years old - is either one still worth getting at this point as a new camera? Do you have another suggestion? I'm looking in the $600-800 price range with bluetooth/wifi capability. Thank you!

This is Canon marketing saying New is better in added a Mark 2 to m50 or m50ii, which their bottom line could be argued the value of the camera increased with new functionality, as the original held back on functions, or they had not thought of these features yet in software. Rather than just give out a freeware upgrade, Canon prefers to make money on its update with rebranding to mark2. Good to know, that at end of 2021, the m50ii has gone down in price and still holds its own for most part against rival Sony ZV-E10 (except in full screen 4K, but not all You Tuber creators starting out even want to shoot in 4K, where this starter camera is aimed at. Most starters may prefer smaller video file sizes of HD1080 over 4K especially if they don't have the fastest computer to edit 4K).

I have the original M50 so thank you for helping me decide not to upgrade. Its really terrible that canon withhold firmware upgrades. Would really have loved to have clean HDMI on original. Not going to fork out a small fortune just to have that one thing that canon could add to the original M50. Great video and very informative.

Hi Todd. That was interesting. I've been out off the grid for awhile and didn't know about the "upgraded" M50. Thanks for the video. It does make me wonder what's going on with Canon. That said, I still LOVE my M50 - so fun. Cheers and boogie boogie, Ivy.

i agree you todd it's all about firmware or software update to their original m50, hardware or physical update is not seen on mark2, like vertical video they have to modify the body to vertical aspect of camera, one word is only i cany say " ADVERTISEMENT IS BUSINESS" hehe

Yeah. This kinda sucks. I’m a little late to the party. I bought the m50 mk I before I got into live streaming. The only reason I MIGHT upgrade is because I have a little over 1k in lenses for the m50. But I might just by an unlimited license for sparkocam for like $70 to get clean hdmi rather than 600+ right now, for a body only no lens firmware update.

I am sure within a month there will be a hacked firmware you can use to update the M50 with all the features of the mark ii. No need to buy an entire camera, lol.

such a nice content. I actually wanting to seriously start vlogging since I bought EOS RP with 24-105L F4, but it is just too heavy on my arms, and with recent release of viltrox AF 23mm, i find it interesting to get an aps-c, and this content solidify my notion not to buy M50, rather invest on iPhone. or maybe, forget being a canon fanboy, perhaps, sony aps-c offers better. I feel sad about how canon updates their cameras. Even EOS RP seems not quite worth for its price when i bought it... I shouldve gone for A7 family, or, just completely migrate to maybe Fuji aps-c or OMDs ... why canon? 🥺

For what the M50 is worth, you could just get an old EOS M and download ML and then you have access to M lenses, adapted EF, C mount and even super 8 depending on how you punch in on the sensor AND you get Raw video. It will be an interesting waiting game as manufacturing ramps back up and what they decide to do with the M-mount.

Obviously there are better cameras around, but few at this price. You mention the Fujifilm X-S10 which costs almost twice as much as the M50:
    Fujifilm X-S10 - $999 (body) compared to M50 II $599 (body).
However, it is a shame that the 'new' M50 version is basically a firmware upgrade.

you should have a look at the directional characteristic of your microphone.
either the pop shield is mounted the wrong way or you are talking into the mic in the wrong direction - the result is strong pop sounds (which you might not hear on a small speaker) and a sound with not enough brilliance.

Great video, very balanced information and thoughtful insight on both the M50 and M50 MK II, i def agree with you that there should have been a firmware update to the original M50 ( i bought one ) my thoughts are that Canon simply chased the bucks by making it look like the Mk II was very much new and improved ? Which really erodes their credibility in my book now.
Most reviewers do focus on the M50 as a vlogging camera and focus on the video more than the photography.
I bought the M50 because it was smaller and lightweight for extended holidays where i didnt want to really carry a big full frame camera. What I find is that the video is useful but the photos can be spectacular in full daylight.
I did buy a canon 11-22 EF M lens which is very good but in hindsight it was a beginners mistake. The 15 - 45mm and the 11 - 22 are not good in low light. My Iphone 8 leaves them for dead. Recent research is pushing me toward buying the Sigma 16mm and or 56mm . Then again I am spending more money but perhaps on the wrong camera ?
Right now I am contemplating selling the M50 and find something else instead. Still trying to work through that one, unless Canon does find it in their heart to deliver a firmware upgrade ? they should even if only to do the right thing.
Canon are so expensive here in Australia, so for the beginners like myself we take note of things like this. It matters.
My wife wants to sell the lot and just update our phones ......... but thats a whole new story ..
    Regards from Down Under

This M50 MKII is verutryyyy strange. It is 95% the same as the previous version, and even stranger, it was not released in any country in Europe! Because? Why did Canon only launch it in the USA and it doesn't appear in any European country? For me, this is very strange and makes me think that for europe maybe canon has other plans, which if it happens is also strange. !!!

1- I got canon M-50 MARK 2 ,so is it compatible with Ninja V
2- My only reason to my NINJA V is because I wanna record 1 hour video @1080@60 with M50 MARK 2, So it that possible to continuously record for 1 hour.
PLEASE DO ANSWER ME TO THIS.

The M50 is an amazing camera, the most amazing camera from Canon! Why? It's cheap af and with workarounds you can shoot amazing footage. They follow this masterpiece of a product with a.... Software update?
Edit: great note of canon maybe phasing out the M series line. This is why I am buying EF lenses and not EFM, because I also fear that. I just use the EF adaptor

Great review, Todd - do they mention on the Mark II that while streaming or using the clean HDMI, will the camera automatically power off after a certain period of time? I currently use the M50 to live stream through a few different methods and this has always been a concern of mine. Specifically for use over ZOOM calls, etc. Great content as always!

I will not be paying another £600 for a software upgrade. I'll keep my M50 MkI. Either I'll go for the M6 to go for 4K but that means upgrading my PC, (which ain't gonna happen as my budget is set aside for hardware synths) or go for the T3/250D which has cleam HDMI, is in essence the M50 in a DSLR format, doesn't need an adaptor for my EF/EF-S lenses and is a better size to grip than the wee M50. You see I'm after 3 decent cameras to switch between and that I can hook up to an Atem Mini Pro - or equivalent to vlog synths. My 35mm film set up used to be based around Olympus with an OM4, OM2SP & OM10 and lots of Zuiko & Tamron Adaptall lenses (which with adaptors can fit my M50). I don't really want to switch from Canon, but as you can see I've done it before and I'm capable of doing it again. Canon just got lazy! Just when I was starting to be a Canon fanboy. Sooo disappointed and am I allowed to say angry Todd? Great video Todd.

Since he didn't respond, I'd suggest moving to Fujifilm if you can afford it. Their APS-C sensor cameras and lenses are better than Canon in just about every way. The X-T30 MK II camera with the excellent kit lens would be a good starting point with this brand. 😎

Good work. Great video. Great good old mic. Could be more outlined and shorter, with less personal comments, and 5% faster.
I am looking for my first vlogging camera for mostly fixed focus close video work, and sharp long telephoto nature shots and astrophotography.
Canon seemed to have the most smartphone control. The Mark 2 has clean 422 out. Sony is still a contender for high ISO.
