    As an absolute beginner a couple of years ago, I started with Canon, because it seemed very clear that Canon’s ergo and usability were the best. I confirm I love them. Especially my M6 ii which is a sleeper in this category that more people should bring up because it is a much better camera than the m50 (faster shooting speed, un-compromised 4k30p, clean HDMI out, surprisingly very decent digital IS, better grip and build quality). But as I keep progressing as an enthusiast, Ive found myself needing a telephoto for travels, backpacking…, and better quality native zoom lenses with faster aperture. They simply don’t exist in ef-m: I love my combo 11-22 and 18-150, as well as the sigma primes. But I’ve caught the bug, I want to learn more and continue to grow. I have recently started to really enjoy bird and wildlife photography, but 150mm is too short. I could buy bulky EF glass and adapt (sigma 100-400 or canon 70-300..), but it’s very inconvenient and defeats the purpose of carrying those small mirrorless cameras. I have the sigma 18-35 f1.8 and never use it anymore because of that.
    So the lens selection is really what has made me switch from ef-m to sony apsc. More specifically much better quality compact zoom lenses like the sigma 18-50, and the telephoto sony 70-350. Knowing now that photography and filmmaking is ALL about the lenses, I would have saved money by getting an A6400 when I started. But the entry point price of the zve10 is a good way to get into the e-mount ecosystem now too.
    Conclusion for beginners and enthusiasts who are getting into this hobby: if your focus is filmmaking as a beginner, get the zv e10 and enjoy the un-compromised features from sony (e.g full auto-focus in 120p slow-mo, slog, hlg, headphone jack input, audio levels…). If the focus is photography, get into the e-mount ecosystem to be able to experiment with a wide range of affordable great quality lenses at different focals and apertures. Lenses which are not rumours or on a road map but actually exist and are sold now. And Lenses that can be kept as one grows and can be used with new bodies including full frame.

    For livestreaming, in addition to manual focus only for a clean HDMI out, the M50 MK 1 shuts off every 30 min with HDMI capture card + dummy battery setup. One work around seems to be connecting the USB and opening the eos utility on PC. It prevents the 30 min hibernation, but it's a hassle to connect 2 cables to PC just to get livestream going.
    From pure stills shooting perspective, Canon just has better price due to its refurb program. For the price of the zv-e10 body, it's possible to get the M50 MK 1 + 15-45mm kit lens + 55-200mm at the same time from canon refurb. With 70 USD more, it's possible to get the M6 MK II body, which is more a capable and ergonomic stills shooter imo.

    The best camera is the one that suits you the best, the one you prefer.
    Regarding the M50, you can use EF and EF-S mounts with an adapter and / or speed booster. Unfortunately, there is a strong rumors saying that Canon will stop producing EF-M mounts (for the M series as M6, M50, etc..) and will focus on RF mounts. It seems Canon want to make the RF mount the new standard for actual and soon to release future cameras (full frame and APS-C). If anyone can confirm, please let me know.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 года назад +1

      Yes - adapters will work. Canon does not seem interested in producing more M-Mount lenses, but there’s been nothing official. That being said, if you like the camera and need one now, the trio of lenses by Sigma are fantastic.

    This video is from Aug. 2021 comparing sony to Canon m50 mark 1. The Canon m50 mark 2 is out now a much better competitor to the ZV-E10 and address some of the issues of the mark 1 and lots of new features, I think it now has 120fps in HD720. Eye detect with dual pixel. More closer matched including live streaming in menu. I think you should do an update to this video, unless you already did? m50ii with the canon desktop utility will allow you to film unlimited time when updating the firmware in utilites for free. Canon has 5 axis IS with the right lens, although maybe digital IS. While the Sony might have a few higher specs with is 6K sampled to 4K, Canon m50ii is a much closer competitor.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 года назад +1

      It’s streaming capabilities were definitely updated and it has a clean HDMI for streaming, and dedicated features. It also added a vertical video mode. The stabilization remains the same and is still only digital stabilization (although it’s better than Sony’s in my opinion and has way less of a crop), it has eye autofocus in video now, which is good, but that’s eye with dual pixel only in 1080. It still doesn’t have dual pixel autofocus in 4K, only in 1080. In 4k it’s contrast detect. The Sony does 120 in 1080. The original Canon m50 can do 120 in 720 like the mark ii. You still have a 30 minute record limit unless you are streaming. you cannot bypass Canons 30 minute time limit. I think the Canon could be an excellent choice for someone who wants to take a lot of photos and you plan to shoot 1080. But if you plan to shoot 4K video the Sony is the better buy. I actually think the m50 mark ii is a better buy for many people. A lot of people don’t need 4K and the photo capabilities are better to me and the Canon is easier to use.

    The crop on canon 4K is pretty awful if you’re trying to record talking head videos at home and you don’t have massive room so you can put the camera 2-3m away. And even then, personally I found it’s much easier to feel connection with the camera when it’s a metre away than 2-3m, so I come across more relaxed with the ZV-E10.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 года назад +2

      Not different regulations, different standards used for frame rates because of electrical power. Europe uses PAL and North America uses NTSC. In North America, electrical power is generated at 60 hz, everywhere else it’s 50 hz. So if you shot in 25 FPS in North America, you would get flicker under artificial lights, and the footage might not play back properly if you are watching on a TV that doesn’t support the two formats, for example.

      Lenses are always a consideration, yes. I personally don’t think these cameras are ideal for vlogging because of the lack of stability (unless you use catalyst browse with a Sony.) One question I had is HDMI video output latency. I have a new m50mk2 and the video output latency via HDMI even directly into a HDMI monitor is terrible. The same is true when I connect it to an Elgato Camlink or an Atem mini. For streaming, this is a real problem. It is video lag not an audio sync issue. The HDMI just does not seem to come out of the camera fast enough. I am not sure if it is my unit or a Canon m50 problem in general. When outputting 1080p via the HDMI there is about a 1/2 to 1-sec delay. I have heard that Sony's don't experience this problem. It is causing me to look at getting rid of the m50mk 2 as a streaming camera. Any thoughts?

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 года назад

      The problem with the m200 is that it doesn’t have a microphone jack and no 24p in 1080. So those are major drawbacks. It does have 24p 4K, but that comes at a 1.6 times crop. BUT if you are willing to record audio externally and find a way through that crop - it definitely can be a viable option

      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 года назад +1

      These are spec reviews because there is a place for them. Footage depends on many factors like who is using it, their lighting etc. and there are other videos for that. And they have their place too. But it’s shortsighted to say that how it looks is all that matters. Someone who knows what their doing can make any camera look good. These reviews show limitations and strengths in black and white. For instance. Someone that needs 4K and good autofocus, or an unlimited record limit just learned from my video that there is no point in considering the canon. Someone who wants a viewfinder just learned the Sony is no good for them.

The entry level ZV-E10 is a good starter, and the lenses you buy from it will stay with you and work no matter where you go in the current Sony line. The M50 would be a throw-away as you move up in your camera requirements. Personally I like the M50 ... but would never buy one. Cheers.
