9:50 that crumpled railing isn't exactly confidence inspiring. Another great entry into the extralite saga. Love the quiet hubs too, it's so peaceful when descending, and there's no sound nagging you to pedal when you're bonked and coasting.
Regarding the bladed-spokes (CX-Ray) - A lot of their advantage isn't even related to being aero. I like buillding with them even for decidedly non-aero applications (e.g. Gravel wheels) because it's dead easy to see and deal with spoke twist / wind-up during the build process. Not "needed" but a welcome 'bonus' feature for sure. Thanks again Tobias for another fantastic 'share' (I just rewatched BB Bearing R&I Without Violence this morning to get psyched up for a 6805 to 2437 swap I did - Thanks !!)
I like the bladed spokes especially with straight pull hubs, since you can prevent them from twisting (with a tool) much easier. As for your objection for me its not that critical. I use tape on round spokes to make the twist visible.
@@tomalbert3299 - Smart tip with using tape on round spokes. I've heard of folks using marking pens (Sharpie) to 'tick' round spokes to visualize twist, but the tape trick is new to me. Thanks.
I have these AR35 with DT Swiss 240 EXP, both came in at 1245g. Best set of wheels I have ever owned, Best part has been in the descending, as no cross winds issues. One extra addition before I started riding these, were to place about 18g led strips to balance them.....allows for smooth high speed descends. (LB wheels are great value....these are my third set of LB's, RECOMMENDED).
Hi. Hope you have better luck with your Light bicycle rims than I had. I had the rims shipped to the UK and had them built up by my LBS on the premise that they were a bombproof wheelset and a customer of there's had gone through four sets of hubs on the same rims , testament indeed, or so I thought at the time. I should mention I ordered a gravel specific rim. Basically ten months down the line and not a rock garden in sight my wheels went in for a service and yo and behold a crack was noticed. I reached out to Light Bicycle wheels who after internal investigations on photographs of the damage came to a conclusion it was an impact crack, and not a manufacturing defect .A 20% discount was what they were willing to offer on a replacement rim. I did not have much of an option but to accept there offer, after only ten months of hard packed family trails I felt hard done to. To be fair the after sales were extremely responsive and helpful with all communications. Possibly a Friday afternoon build?
Hello also from Japan! I love my Campagnolo WTO 45s. and my friend loves his WTO 33s. We ride mostly hills. They are as light as the Lightweight wheels but also aren’t as expensive. Happy riding in 2022!
Another lovely offering. Thank you. Superb editing and humourous presentation in your own way... Love the "talking to oneself while riding uphill" segment... Hmmm, familiar...
Brilliant Intro! I am on the same fence regarding wheel building. But, accepting the DIY curse, It will happen, eventually. That bonus footage cured my New England house bound blues! 🙏
That’s why I built myself a custom DT compo wheelset: RR440 rims, 240s hubs, 28/28h competition spokes. Laced them up, brought it to a friends shop for truing, and no problems at all, completely bulletproof sub 1600g rim brake wheelset for touring/conquering Japanese mountains.
Welcome to the Light Bicycle family. Really happy with my Falcon pro WR50..I chose the wide bed and hookless model. Tyre mounting is straight forward and the finish is really nice. I build them by myself as a first wheel build an they turned out perfect. Did a video about it
I just found this channel a few weeks ago and have been enjoying it immensely! I had no idea Omiya was so beautiful. Need to make my way up there. Cheers from Shizuoka!
@@ridesofjapan That makes much more sense to me :-) Definitely seems like a place to visit. My wife and I occasionally go to Saitama to watch baseball, so it would be a good excuse for a weekend. Thanks for all your great videos! I've learned so much :-)
You would have no problems building your own wheels. I built mine and ruined a few (three) sets of spokes and one rim but got the hang of it and it gives me a great deal of satisfaction. You could pull off a build in one try. Also flying downhill is sort of a signature close for you. I love it. Happy New Year.
I have no doubt that I would love it... I would also get too obsessed and buy tools and pro-level truing stands that are way beyond my abilities. Problem is there's not enough time. It can't take time away from riding, so that time would have to be in the expense of making videos... so that's why I don't venture down the wheels building rabbit hole. plus, It's a great way to support my LBS :)
"And yes, I like a quiet hub because... I'm not twelve!" 🤣🤣🤣 Laughing my arse off because I spend a chunk of every working week sat above the swarm of angry bees that's the Hope Pro 4! 😆
Thanks for the comment in regards to hub sound. I was contemplating between the dt 180 and the cyber hubs and I think I will go with the cybers now. Much appreciated info!
Light bicycles do not disappoint! I'm the exact opposite of a flyweight (120kg currently) and run their standard weight rims with success on all my bikes, my road rims from them have taken a beating and they just keep on rolling along without any issues as they close in on 10k miles.
And I thought I was the only one who liked quite hubs, never understood why people like the so loud - weird. Great film - having learnt about the cold spell hitting all go Japan here ninth UK I was bracing myself for no films for a while.
Quiet hubs are nice when riding solo in nature - loud hubs are useful when riding with lots of pedestrians (no bell needed). But when you keep pedaling and stop free wheeling, the hub sound doesn´t matter. 😅
You should’ve filmed the guys at the bikeshop assembling the wheels!! ;) that would have been kind of cool and for us to see what bike shops look like in Japan
Best you tube channel! Love the content as usual. I’ve been running Light Bicycle rims for 3 years now. Had some issues with the initial set and their customer service could not be better. They even paid for the faulty wheel to be couriered back for analysis! And I get far less side wind buffering in these than some Irwin’s that are only a couple of mm deeper. Looking forward to the next episode already! Thanks as always for what you do!
Glad to see you back my friend, was wondering when the next video would come out! Glad to see this video too, been wondering about the Falcon rims. To me the fact that they don't need sanding out of the mold speaks volumes about the quality of their molds and also the repeatability of their manufacturing process. In other words, if I ordered wheels today, they should be of similar quality. This is very helpful info! 😎
I've built many wheels (including very expensive stuff too), and LB rims are very good quality especially for the price. I always recommend them to my clients for mid range wheel builds.
Love the video, and the transparency about the Extralites. However, that they need to be replaced out of concern for de-lamination is a big disappointment. This seems like a throwaway product that should instead be manufactured to last much longer. When you add the weight of the rotors and calipers I'm wondering whether a rim brake alloy (e.g. Shamal Ultra) could outperform this in terms of total weight and durability.
Is the first intro of 2022 going to be the best one of the year? This one is going to be hard to beat (and I'm only talking of the imagery, the music and the editing - I hope your cycling experience keeps improving throughout). Enjoy your new wheels, and happy new year!
I ordered a a pair of their rims and built them with my own hubs about two years ago. Great wheels! No problems whatsoever. They will custom order for you. I would definitely order another pair. They were 45 mm. For 480$ USD with shipping, there is no better deal out there. I suggest you build your wheels up or have a pro do it.
I have a pair of the Light Bicycle WR50 flyweight rims laced to DT Swiss 240 hubs (the old ones) via Berd spokes. ~1300g. I absolutely love those wheels. With the 180EXP hubs would be similar weight to your set, but 50mm deep and 25mm inner width / 33mm external width. Just saying...
I have custom built Light Bicycle WR50 wheels with "flyweight" carbon and they've been excellent wheels for the past 2 years. Lighter than the Bontrager Aeolus XXX wheels I wanted to get at half the price. The DT 240 EX rear hub freewheel is considerably quieter than the buzzsaw sound of my bike's stock Bontrager 3V wheel's freewheel.
Riding over the drains on the road with those parallel fins...scary! I gueess that extra 40g of epoxy is really a must to keep the structural integrity of the wheels.

I have the falcon pro 50, lightweight option, with cx rays, alloy nipples, and novatec hubs (because they are light and so much less than dt, and quieter). I also ordered it with out spoke holes, but that seems to mean they just add a piece of carbon on top of the holes, so everyone else should pass on that option. They weigh in at 1371 for the set. I’m happy so far. They do catch some cross wind on days with high gusts.
Interesting point about the holes. I wanted holes since It would have to be built up here. But I’m tempted to get a complete set deeper profile in the future. Will go with holes again in that case then, cheers!
Same rims. Just not drilled through. Built them up myself. Use the magnet and screw. Easy. Only downside is that they don't stock them in their N.A. warehouse. So shipping is more $.
About to receive delivery from Muller of Germany, a 29 inch mountain bike wheelset built up with the MXX Carbon Extralite Hyper/Extralite hubs, I am a little concerned of the damage that you found. This build will be for a mountain bike that I ride on the road only, and weighing only 125 pounds myself, I hope for longevity of the wheelset.

Wheel building is not so bad. I prefer it to bleeding brakes but would rather do suspension service. But I can see how it would be a rabbit hole for someone with your attention to detail.
Hey, Shimano? Waiting on your Scylence hubs! I've got three wheelsets built up around Light Bicycle rims, waiting for silent hubs for the next set. Flawless every time.
