  • Alright, get this. So in an effort to perfect today’s featured song All Night Long (All Night), Lionel Richie stalked his wife’s gynecologist. That’s right, you heard me. Lionel repeatedly called up his wife’s doctor because he wanted to learn how to emulate a Jamaican accent for All Night Long. Finally, this doctor had to tell Lionel to stop calling because it was interfering with his work. But that’s not the only crazy piece of trivia connected to this track. All Night Long (All Night) also includes a completely made-up language that sounds like it's real… but it's 100% gibberish. Later on, All Night Long would also headline on one of the world’s biggest stages, with over 2 and a half billion people tuning in to catch the performance. All these stories and more are coming up. So get ready to raise the roof and have some fun… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Today, we’ve got a good one for you. He’s one of the all-time biggest-selling artists who cut his teeth with the premier Soul band of the 70s, and then took the world by storm as a balladeer in the early 80s. But by 1983, he was ready to speed things up. In fact, he just couldn’t slow down. He’s a legend who’s antics have included everything from finishing Kenny Rogers’ biggest hit while going to the bathroom to writing or singing a #1 hit for 9 consecutive years… Not even the Beatles did that.
I’m talking about a man that doesn’t get the credit he so richly deserves for being every bit the hitmaker that Michael Jackson and prince were in the 80s. Mr. Lionel Richie. Today we discuss a #1 smash from him. From his juggernaut sophomore LP, Can’t Slow Down, it’s Lionel Richie and All Night Long (All Night)… parenthesis song.Lead singer Lionel Richie co-founded the Commodores in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1967. After signing with Motown in 1972 the group began stacking up Top 10 hits over the next decade… The Commodores established themselves as America’s most popular soul group of the 70s, thanks in part to Richie’s knack for writing and singing romantic, piano ballads like ‘Easy,’ ‘Three Times A Lady,’ and ‘Still.’
But Lionel would also prove his songwriting capabilities outside the confines of the Commodores… for instance, penning Kenny Rogers’ 1980 #1 hit Lady.. Apparently, Kenny was recording it and noticed that the song was missing a verse and was too short. Lionel Richie finished the song while on the toilet. True story: Then in 1981, Richie duetted with Diana Ross on the theme song for the movie Endless Love. Released as a single, Endless Love topped both the US and UK charts, becoming one of Motown’s all-time biggest hits.
Yeah, this man definitely knew his way around a ballad. Or should I say a #1 ballad. Cuz that’s all he wrote. #1 hits.

My personal favorite Lionel Ritchie story goes something like this. I lived in Los Angeles for about 20 years. I was an actor and I worked on a lot of film & TV. One of the side jobs I worked was with a murder mystery dinner theater company. We did shows at conventions, people's homes and some pretty classy restaurants. One of the restaurants was a very nice Italian restaurant smack in between Beverly Hills and Century City. This company had the cast spread around the room, sitting at tables with our audience, and pretending to not be a part of the show. So I was playing a husband with my wife sitting at a table with some audience members. That night, this would have been in the late 1990's, we had Lionel Ritchie and his family sitting at one of the tables close to mine. So the show started and when the detective came in to investigate the 1st murder he started questioning the people in the audience. A little bit later my wife was murdered (we usually averaged 3 "murders" per show), and the detective stood me up to answer some questions. This part of the show was scripted, but we were allowed to improvise. I answered his questions, but began to get more emotional than I usually did. I apologized for my emotions and explained that it was because my wife was "Once...Twice...Three Times A Lady." I actually sang the last part. By the time I got to Twice Lionel Ritchie started pounding on his table and laughing out loud. The audience roared when I sang the title of the song. When we finished the show and the whole cast got a curtain call I made a point of going over to Lionel Ritchie. I asked him if I owed him any royalties for quoting his song. He cracked up and said no, he thought it was a riot. He was a very nice guy.

When he performed this for the closing ceremony of the 1984 LA Olympics, he extended it for so long, but we couldn't turn it off. The joy and celebration had become infectious. It was just fun to see how long he would sing it. He could have sung it literally, all night long.

Weirdly enough, I think of this performance often. It is my greatest memory of the LA Olympics - but for a different reason.
With over BILLION people reported to be watching, after a couple of verses Richie is joined by a bunch of street dancers on stage. At the time I was obsessed with the art of popping and locking but it wasn't more than 20 seconds after they first appear that you see one of the dancers do a bit of a face plant right on camera. It looked like it probably hurt, and a few seconds later another one slipped in the same spot. At the time I felt so bad for them - the most eyes he will ever have on them, and they wipe out, an epic fail. So whenever I hear that song I think of that first guy, and wonder if that moment affected his life, or if he managed to shake it off. In any case, I wish that person well, and hope they went on to better moments

He is definitely one of the greatest pop song writers/artist of all time.
Been a fan since the Commodores days of the 70’s.
I’m so glad I finally got to see him in concert just a few weeks ago.
And at 70 something, let me say he did not disappoint! He played everything you can imagine from his obvious solo hits to even the Commodores hits he didn’t sing lead on. His concert was nothing but great and memorable….hit after hit. He even performed “We are the world” which as you know, he co-wrote with MJ
He also did the DR duet “Endless Love” and had the crowd singing Diana Ross’ part….how cool is that. I think everyone loves Lionel ❤🎹🎤

Funny you mentioning Lionel at the 84 Olympics as this morning I pulled out some pictures of a much much younger me sitting next to a 1984 olympic gold medal. I worked for the company that produced them. They were produced for free, because the companiy was able to produce all of the partcipating companies awards that year with the Olympic logo. I always try to encourage people by letting them know, the only difference between a bronze, silver or gold medal is a thin layer of electroplate. A third place has most of the medal. It's the way I feel about great singers who don't have a chart topping hit. They are there and that is what matters.

Turned out the man’s dog was named Lady. And that’s what he said to have the dog lay down. The guy busted out laughing. Obviously she was a bit embarrassed. Dear Prof of Rock, what a fantastic review of Lionel Ritchie. One of my favourite songs from him is Machine Gun with the Commodores and how we danced 3 times a Lady next to Saturday Night Fever in the Discos in the 70's. The lady in the video who dances flamenco at the end of All night long is a Venezuelan socialite daughter of a very famous TV host, she and her 3 sisters were kidnapped in the 60's, one of her sisters on the effects of drugs jumped from a trampoline into a pool and broke her spine, the pool was empty, she never could walk again and in her later years was elected a Congress Woman, her father became a candidate for President and was going to win, his plane had an accident and crushed, needless to say they were all killed. Back to Lionel, his songs are great and has all our respect as he accepted the invitation to play at King Charles coronation when all the other famous singers rejected. Carry on Lionel, we love you!

Here is a perspective of the music of Lionel Richie from a nightclub DJ. I was a nightclub DJ from the late 1970s through the mid 1990s. In that time I played all types of music in various nightclubs, including the most popular nightclubs in the Portland, Oregon market and the Seattle/Bellevue, Washington market. Obviously throughout the years that I was spinning vinyl, beat mixing the hits from almost every genre imaginable (I was subscribed to multiple custom DJ remix/dance mix services and had the right gear to create and produce my own custom dance beat mixes to all sorts of music from all sorts of artists, including the Charlie Daniels Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, The Eagles, Amy Grant, Barry McGuire, The Doobie Brothers, etc) so the clientele of the clubs where I was lead DJ was exposed to not only the most popular music, but I also introduced them to new mixes of their old favorites, and to new music from artists that they were not yet familiar with. From the Jackson 5, the Jacksons, then Michael Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, and Janet Jackson, that family was always popular on my playlists, as was Prince and all of his protege bands and artists. Some artists were just automatic hit machines. Others like that were Daryl Hall & John Oates, Diana Ross, Elton John, ZZ Top, etc. Familiar artists who continued cranking out great music were easily popular with the club clientele. The Commodores were equally popular, right in there with the Gap Band, the S.O.S. Band, Everything Nile Rodgers touched, including Chic and Sister Sledge, and all of the George Clinton projects (P-Funk All Stars, Funkadelic, Parlaiment, and the George Clinton "solo" records). I digress. This is getting longer than I had hoped.
I'll get to the point. Although the Commodores were always popular on the dance floor with the clientele, the solo stuff from Lionel Richie wasn't as popular. I mean, his music, being mostly ballads, was great as slow jams for those sets every 90 minutes or so where I'd slow things down to calm the crowd and sell drinks to the customers who were hardcore dancers, which were plentiful. I was actually astounded at how many people came to the clubs just to dance and dance and DANCE. Anyway, as popular as his slow jams were, the more upbeat solo stuff from Lionel Richie was not popular in the clubs at all. Not even the songs from huge blockbuster movies. I learned while working in the music industry that aside from dance music charts, which were as legitimate as possible as they were averaged from weekly music charts sent to labels and industry publications from select nightclub DJs, myself included, who ranked the popularity of each song by crowd response/reaction, number of song requests, and a touch of personal opinion. All other music charts were/are selected by "the club", the powers that be in the industry who have major and minor record labels take turns on whose artists will get what awards each year, and THAT INCLUDES EVEN THE SO-CALLED "CHRISTIAN" MUSIC CHARTS.
Again I digress. My entire point is that I highly suspect that the chart-topping success of Lionel Richie since he chose to become a solo artists has almost everything to do with the fact that he literally sold his soul (that used to be a running joke because the powers that be didn't want it known to be true) and became part of "the club" - looking squeaky clean and good on the surface, living a life of absolutely vile behavior alongside countless others in the entertainment industry - all bloodthirsty, evil, murderous, child molesting Luciferian pædovores. You can call me all sorts of names and claim that I am a nut job, but I have witnessed all of it. Heck, many of the "stars" people worship today aren't even the real person. The original person is long since gone. You don't want to know the details. Perhaps you've heard some of the details surrounding some of them, like Justin Timberlake and Brittney Spears, both of whom were killed in a car crash over 2 decades ago, or Anne Heche, Prince, Michael Jackson, Chris Cornell, and even Kurt Cobain. We have all been lied to about everything for our entire lives. Nothing is as it seems.
One of the truly genuine, honest pleasures in life is this channel and this show - "Professor of Rock" with Adam Reader. You can't go wrong with this guy. He gets the true stories from the real artists and no punches are pulled and no holds are barred. Stick with this channel and you'll get the truth.

Bob Marley and the Wailers were once the opening act for the Commodores. In the “Marley” documentary, Marley’s manager asserted that it should have been the Commodores performing the opening act for Bob Marley and the Wailers rather than the other way around.
I am not sure whether it is folklore or not but it is alleged that Bob Marley would out-perform and out-shine the Commodores on stage- transfixing and riveting the crowd who would scream for more from Bob Marley.
It would not surprised me that the seed was then sown in Lionel Richie to create the “All Night Long” sound to reflect the profound influence of Bob Marley.

As a punk, and metalhead, I was indifferent to a lot of songs you cover. But after you cover them, I have a new found appreciation for these songs. I guess I should have paying more attention. Thanks for that. I think. 😂

This was one of many albums my mother had in 'rotation in the 80's. She'd put a record on after my father left for work while she did the dishes. I am old enough to remember the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles (we lived a few miles south of that area until 1993).

I remember watching Lionel Ritchie's performance at the Olympics! It was mind-blowing!! I always enjoyed the laid-back music of The Commodores and Lionel's early solo stuff but I really liked All Night Long (All Night) as well as Dancing on the Ceiling! Both made you wanna get up and dance!
