Marc not only performed in the official Queen tribute band put together by Roger Taylor, but he also contributed singing vocals to the Bohemian Rhapsody film.

Glad you checked Marc out and enjoyed it. His manager challenged him to do this video. He took a week to learn the song - mainly the middle part, that typically was always done (even by Queen) via a video track shown on stage. There are versions of Marc singing this with his band, with the full instrumentation as well. He really is an amazing singer. Thanks! Cheers!

Marc has a good voice and hits the notes, but he doesn't have Freddie Mercury's special tone, Freddie's vocals can't be duplicated because he was able to use his silent vocal cords, they're cords the sit above our vocal cord but most people cannot activate them. Tuvan throat singers with years of training can. Since Freddie could use the silent cords, which was natural to him, he could produce 2 tones when he sung, higher and lower pitches at the same time, also that growling sound. Like I said Marc can hit the notes, but he can't achieve the sound that was uniquely Freddie.

It’s a common misconception that only a few can use their ventricular/vestibular cords (false vocal cords). In fact, every time you hear distortion (rasp), you are hearing the vestibular cords vibrating. Every time you hear someone sing with vocal fry or speak in fry mode (Kardashians come to mind), you are hearing vestibular cords vibrate.
Freddie did it naturally, and so does Marc. If anything, Marc has a better vibrato control, so his distortion varies from ever-so-slight (very difficult & masterful thing to do) to very-forward and obvious when singing hard rock songs. Freddie just naturally used his vestibular folds whenever he could get there, but didn’t have much control over them. Marc’s voice can be both very pure, crystal clean or raspy. He knows how to use both sets of cords with admirable control and how to mix pure with distortion. That is very “rock” thing to do.
Many singers know how to do it. Anyone can learn to do it. There are endless videos on YT teaching the technic.

@@papabearM3 Freddie also had crystal vocals mainly in the studio after resting his vocals, listen to Exercises in Free Love, it's just piano and Freddie's vocals in falsetto, it was a demo for the Opera album he wrote and sung with Montserrat Cabela, on the album the it's called Ensueno, Freddie sing it in baritone/tenor. When on tour for 4 months his vocals were great but sung in a lower pitch so he didn't strain his vocals . Singers who scream can kick in the Silent vocals but not for long before damage starts. Freddie got more control of his vibrato over time, it was his vibrato that was part of the uniqueness, along with the double tone he had. I can tell the difference between Marc and Freddie's voice, they do not sound the same. I've been listening to Freddie's voice for 50 years and no one sounds like him.

Dear Deborah, there are no identical voices in this Universe simply bc each single voice is a long combination of various microtonal frequencies. Imagine a math sequence that has 50+ digits, then imagine guessing it to reconstruct that sequence. Unless you are a computer that actually can calculate that sequence modulation at every second of someone’s singing, it is impossible to sound like someone else. No human can do it. But, as a human, some are born by random chance with a similar - NOT IDENTICAL, - similar vocal “combo.” For instance, I sound like my father. Marc sounds similar to Freddie naturally. He won that lottery.
However, you don’t have to sound even similar when you use same techniques as someone else. And even sounding similar in timbre and tone does nit guarantee that using the same technique will produce the same result.
And OF COURSE you can tell the difference bw Marc’s and Freddie’s voices - they are two different people with two similar to a degree yet nit identical vocal “codes.” No one says they sound the same. They can’t by the very nature of their unique sound composition. That is why voice is used to identify people. It is like fingerprints, no two are the same.
Re: crystal clear vocals. In studio, yes, after he recorded and re-recorded multiple times, the perfectionist he was. But live? Only in the mid-to-lower range, and pretty much only with the help of stimulants. He abused his vocal cords nit just with poor technique but partying, boozing up, screaming at his boyfriend, smoking, “living it up,”etc. So, his vocal nods were well deserved, if you ask me. Marc, on the other hand, sings equally well both in studio and live. And he has been touring for the last 25+ years and is still continuously touring, much more than Freddie ever toured, and sings the entire setlist while jumping around the stage and playing multiple instruments. The man is a beast like no other! No stimulants needed!
Re: Freddie’s vibrato. Freddie had hammer vibrato and sounded like a bleating goat for the longest time. Roger has pointed that out in one of his interviews. Yes, Fred did get a handle of his vinrato about half-way through his run, but he also fell into a handful of vocal tricks to avoid singing altogether, as his modal range dropped down to 2 octaves barely. He constantly modulated down, let the audience sing all the hard transitions, left all high notes and upper harmonies to Roger, screamed out lyrics, sustained isolated notes with endless fermate to impress, etc Essentially, his vibrato became easier to control as he really stopped singing properly and started performing songs and hurdling crowds. His singing became secondary to his “performance,” to his bravado.
Marc’s uses his voice with respect. He knows his voice inside out and uses it masterfully. And though Marc considers Freddie to be his vocal mentor, I am afraid the student way out performs the master at this point.
Anyway, I digress. The original convo was about using vestibular folds when singing. Again, there is NOTHING unique about Freddie using his. Many do, Marc included. End of.

@@papabearM3 Obviously no vocal is identical, but many like Marc tout such abilities, many will say he sounds just like Freddie, and of course he doesn't. My point was exactly that, everyone has a vocal fingerprint, so when people like Marc says you can sing and sound like someone else like Freddie it's untrue. If people listen carefully Marc doesn't sound like him. People today don't even realize most singers today are auto tuned, They're listening to a computerized vocal, so they're easily fooled. Marc has a wonderful vocal ability, so knock no on him.

“Many like Marc tout such abilities”? You kidding me?! Marc doesn’t “tout” his ability, he just gets up on that stage and performs these songs better than the rest of the “touters.” Why? Not only bc his voice naturally resembles Freddie’s- or he wouldn’t be asked to record “Freddie’s vocals” for the biopic - but bc Marc is a world-class, consummate musician who can handle every song Mercury ever wrote, sang and performed with relative ease. Marc does it as a tribute to Freddie and Freddie’s musicality, not as a “look what I can do” self-serving act!
It is NOT untrue that Marc sounds like Freddie. He DOES sound like Freddie, even though he is not trying to sound like him. And he has NEVER said that “you can sing and sound like Freddie.” Not once. He has a video that demonstrates Freddie’s singing “habits,” “approaches,” aka techniques. That he does. He had to approximate Freddie’s singing for the movie.
“if people listen carefully he doesn’t sound like him.” Look, I have perfect pitch and, at times, hear Freddie so strongly in Marc’s voice that it is hard to believe it is not Fred. So what? People are looking for a similar sound bc they loved the original sound. Ofc Marc doesn’t sound exactly like Freddie! What matters is that HIS tone is probably the closest tone to Freddie’s we all have heard so far. No computers involved. And FYI autotune does not correct the tone, it is a pitch correction device. New AI tool can correct the tone and approximate the timbre. But go listen to all the AI generated Freddie videos - they all have the same thing in common: Marc Martel’s recordings lie at the base of them all.
