Goosebumps in every second of this video! I love Freddy, and when I saw the Marc Martel's videos I was shocked with his voice. As you said, if we close our eyes we can not tell the difference. Amazing!
There is a video compilation of Marc sounding like other singers. Also, some of his non Queen, 90 music covers really show off his talent for voice impressionism. Then he has his own music that is absolutely amazing. I love his Impersonator album, more specifically, the song The Remake. There is one note that he holds for an incredibly long time.
IMO on that particular video, it demonstrates how Marc's voice sounds the same in every cover - jokingly "it's Freddie singing Seal!" - rather than how much his voice "changes". I think Marc has a great ear for matching "style" and enunciation, but his tone stays the same.
Freddie Mercury was an extraordinary musician and showman. Marc is right up there with him regarding musicianship. Both had/have a level of versatility that make for a truly great listening experience. I love the way that both singers would bend notes at the rght time and use the right amount of vibrato. While my singing is comparable to a cow lowing in a field, I do have a good ear for music. I exclusively play the soprano saxophone. I was thinking that much of what you were talking about in this video also pertains to the type of sound I get when practicing my soprano sax. I spoke of vibrato above. It took me a long time to perfect my vibrato on the sax. It also took a long time to get my growling to sound half-way decent.
6:02 - If you listen to some of Marc's OLD songs with his Christian rock band (called "downhere"), you'll notice Marc isn't doing anything with his voice to sound like Freddie. Even in this video, he's not trying to sing "in the style of" Freddie, but is doing his own version. As he's mentioned in interviews, all he does is add "a bit" of a British accent, when singing Queen songs, to sound more like Freddie's accent. Roger Taylor called Marc's voice "spine-chillingly identical" to Freddie's, and I'm certainly not going to be the one to argue with him. 😄
Except hes not an impersonator.. He just happens to have a similar voice. In his previous band someone said he sounded like Freddy Mercury.. And the rest is history
When you were struggling to find a term for what Marc does other than “impression”, I think “vocal tribute” more accurately describes what he does. He’s not pretending his voice is Freddie’s, he’s paying tribute to Freddie’s musicality.
I have been a great fan of Marc Martel. I always like and respect your opinions as they are very objective. Other artists singing with Queen have no match with Martel.
Marc sounds more like Freddy than anyone else on the planet. He is stunningly good at doing so. I think that Marc's non Queen performances are unfortunately overlooked. I would recommend ~ Marc Martel - Unchained Melody (Official Music Video) ~ ruclips.net/video/0gEml07j9bA/видео.html One of the best versions I have ever heard.!
Why do reactors stop the video before or not react to Marc putting up both arms victoriously? He was happy that he did an outstanding job without messing up...lol.
Your detailed enthusiastic review of Marc’s singing is enjoyable! Yes, impersonating is not what Marc does, as he was told he sounded like Freddie before he knew who he was. His diction is impeccable!
7:14 Now Nick, no need to be a “kids these days kinda guy” 😉. That being said, I’m convinced part of Marc’s ability to sound like Freddie are their similarly shaped faces. They both have cross bites, lantern jaws, aqua line noses…
I was introduced to Marc at a Christian music festival in 2011 in the middle of nowhere South Dakota with his band (name escapes me) and turned to my best friend and asked “…how did Freddie get reincarnated as a Christian artist…”
@@artfulstories Thank you, my gut said it started with Down! They really were my sleeper hit all those years ago, and then YT helped him catapult even further in music terms ❤️
Marc, along with Tommy Johansson (also worth checking out) are my two favourite singers, for reasons you mention - nice clear voices. For the women, it's Lara Fabian and Faouzia. Faouzia is up and coming and should be a lot more known than she is. She recently released a live performance of her Fur Elise, which is amazing. She's unique in many ways. At just 23, she writes most of her own songs, but does some great covers as well.
When you mentioned Marc is probably good at impressions, it brought to mind his cover of Bare Naked Ladies - If I Had $1000000. He makes it his own, definitely, but it is a great example of what I think you were saying. The Marc Martel rabbit hole is a very fun ride indeed! ruclips.net/video/-Xyl9lKYXIQ/видео.html
If you have not thought of Queen as a rock band, your definition of Rock may be a tad bit narrow...Also, I would be intrested in your opinion of Martels version of Halleluljah, or other non-freddie covers to show the extent of his vocals....
Queen has prog. (Prophet's Song), thrash metal (Stone Cold Crazy), punk rock-style (Sheer Heart Attack) & many more genres mixed in their catalogue. They were very rock inspired in the 70s, while they leaned towards pop in the 80s. They are literally the British Band with the most diverse sound. Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, King Crimson, Yes, Radiohead etc., do not even come close in that respect. (They were all great British Bands, in their respective field). That is why Queen are still loved & remembered by many people until today.
@@nickhiggsthesinger, listen to some of Freddie's duets with Montserrat Caballé. She said he was definitely a baritone. She actually wanted him to sing more opera, but he didn't want to "betray" his fans, by not singing rock-oriented songs.

Only according to haters. His peers, industry musicians, vocal coaches, and most of the people who listen to him know and have stated repeatedly what a gifted and skilled vocalist he is. However for those who prefer another cover artist to the point where they actually hate Marc or those who feel violently that no one should sing Freddie's music, the denial persists. Interesting but sad.
@@laurinbartel640 "Different taste" is " I prefer ...." or not commenting at all. You literally said he screams which no actual musician would agree with . That's not different taste. That's a slam.
