Look at the areas where this is happening the most and you’ll find that there are laws in those areas essentially protecting the thieves from prosecution and tying the hands of the police. Yes, last year while getting something for my late mothers house, i saw one in South San Francisco where the employee told me not to interfere with the thief. Earlier this year I stopped a guy as I was entering the Soquel store wne I heard people yelling at the staff that a guy was stealing a big red box, so I walked in front of him and said "really" at which point he dropped the box and ran out of the store. Boy did I get yelled at by the store manager and the Santa Cruz Sheriff's deputy. You could have been hurt, or killed I got in stereo. Plus if I had touched or hurt him, I could have been sued. Now those are some fked upped laws if a thief can sue you for stopping him from stealing, which last time I checked, was a crime.

He told me that his Home Depot had the highest theft rate of all Home Depots in his region and had uniformed and plainclothes security who have detained and arrested theives, many of them repeat offenders. He explained how bold many of them are, and before security began, they'd grab a shopping or lumber cart, fill it up with only the priciest goods, walk out with middle fingers held high saying they'd be back. Now, most of these attempts are on high res cameras with footage archived for future arrests.

@@jonathanclemmer8971 You have way too much faith in the greeters of those stores, lol. Most of the time they're either too preoccupied to look at you, or just don't care. All you have to do is tell them you're going to go buy a membership, and they let you in without a card. It also comes down to the items being sold in the stores. Sam's Club, and Costco sell bulk, and large items not easily stolen, and no one's gonna steal food to sell it.
It also has to deal with product placement in the stores. Most of the really expensive stuff is placed right at the entrance, and is often heavily manned by employees, and associates just by nature of where the items are. The real crimes in those places are all the heavyweights walking around the stores, treating it like it's a free, all-you-can-eat buffet with the samples, lol. I've seen lots of people walk the entire perimeter of the samples kiosks, eat a few times in each, then walk out without buying a single thing.

Company’s like Home Depot need to bring back more cashiers like when they first opened. They need to have more associates on the store floor to help people and keep an eye on shady looking characters wheeling twenty boxes of drills and grinders towards the exit. They need to utilize some sort of monitoring with clear sharp cameras and have a power button to lock any exit that these thief’s are headed for until someone with authority can get to them. And lastly they need to donate to judges and prosecutors so those judges will prosecute these thieves. It’s pretty clear that everyone is on the take these days. If they can find prosecutors and judges who aren’t corrupt then they can use that money for all of the above.

All retailers need to stop accepting returns without a receipt. We had a serial shoplifter that was stealing a $90 item from Lowe's. He would return it without receipt for a gift card. They knew who the guy was and started watching him when he entered a store. He then got other people to steal the same item for him. At the time I spent about $250,000 a year at my Lowe's store. My favorite contractor service worker saw this guy exiting the store with this $90 item in hand. She stopped him and took the item away from him. Then told him to leave. He raised hell. She got fired. I started taking my business to Home Depot.

That happened even back in the 1980's. I had a couple that stole high end 100 amp main breakers. Then return them at the store. The assist manager called me and asked how many we had. I checked inventory and we had three but they were missing. So they only accepted 2 and gave them a gift card. i watched them go out into the parking lot. On the way to there motor home . They sold the $200 gift card for $150 to a customer in the parking lot for cash. I got the plate number and called the next store. Best I could do at that time.

Home Depot's annual profits increased from about $22 billion to about $37.5 billion between the end of 2009 and the end of 2019. Since the beginning of 2020 the company's annual profits have increased at a faster rate, and since the end of 2021 have been running at an annual rate of over $50 billion. Retail theft is a problem for many reasons, but at least in this company's case, increases in this activity have not translated to a decrease in profit. How much have retail price increases at this and other companies been due to shrinkage vs. higher corporate profits? I question whether to some extent loss prevention efforts such as locked merchandise displays, etc. are done to justify higher prices by making consumers believe the companies are reeling from theft losses and thus are forced to significantly raise prices.

If you see something you should say something, it doesn't mean you have to apprehend the thief yourself. Also, don't stand for it anywhere you see it, not just at Home Depot. There's no way the company is just going to absorb the cost of all of that happening, they are going to pass it on to us.

All the Ace Hardware in my Utah area have each item locked on their peg board and no one to unlock it. It's a pain in the butt and I don't shop there anymore. If all the big box stores do this I will shop online and never go into them again. My guess is that by locking each individual piece up they lose impulse buying and any revenue from that. So by thwarting thieves, they lose revenue from people who avoid their stores and impulse buy.

I have commented on this before. As long as the punishment does not stop the crime, you need to increase the punishment. Understand this means law enforcement must increase the punishment. Law enforcement needs to crack down on the selling of stolen goods. At some point retailers need to have the ability to stop a criminal and have the police back them up. I watched a report on how easy it was to sell stolen merchandise on Amazon, this needs to stop also. #1 Increase punishment #2 stop merchants from selling stolen merchandise. I have no problem showing a receipt before leaving the store, but this does not stop the person running past me with stolen merchandise!

I've worked at HD & Lowes. These thieves have it down to a art form in a lot of cases. I don't blame these retailers. They need to do something or it's getting worse and will. I understand they don't want customers or employees hurt, but it's breeding more thieves. I think Starting with something drastic will help greatly. Customers will eventually get over the inconvenience and understand and thieves will get less. There will be a short time of loss from thieves and customers not shopping but customers will come around because they need to shop.

Home Depot used to have different architecture and store design. They need to return to the less efficient, but way safer designated tool section, w different egress and separate cash register and dedicated personnel. And regardless of what department, high dollar items need to be consolidated into sections. Home Depot like everyone else is eliminating staff and relying on technology, and so are shoplifters. They know the store layout and egress so once they have something they can run out an open door. They know how to defeat loss prevention like CCTV and RFI tags. Home Depot and the others thought they could eliminate humans as employees and it has not worked.

Many years ago, my local Home Depot was a 24-hr store (I know, hard to imagine, these days).
One night in the overnight hours, a friend and myself went to shop for a new hand-drill and we were followed around the store by a young cop who was obviously very anxious to be a crime caper hero, even though we were not up to any nefarious activity.
We were a pair of stoner-type teenagers, tbh, but we were not there to commit crimes and the stalking we experienced in the store by the cop who followed us as we shopped was extremely unwelcome. When we first arrived, he was just hanging out at the front of the store, by the cash registers, chatting with bored, storefront employees, before deciding to follow my friend & I as we shopped.

My local Home Depot (smallish town in the California Bay Area) is in a low crime town that might be reason they were able to get the local police to park out front. I hear that they pay officers over-time pay to do these types of jobs. The day laborers aren't allowed to stand out front of these location, but they still go in there to do material runs for projects and they were stealing stuff from the store that's when the local law enforcement got involved and now they are doing fine. You'll never stop all theft but steps like these can mitigate it. Kind of like putting a steering wheel lock, alarm, and kill switch on your car. It's not going to stop all thief's but it will stop some.

The bigger issue is that the laws have been changed to avoid filling up the prisons, and thieves being smart enough to operate "under the law". With no consequences due to legal hand-tying, it shouldn't surprise anyone that these issues are only getting worse. The only other recourse is for the store to bring this up with civil actions, which will be expensive to file and deal with. My only issue would be that I'd have to make my tool purchases separate from the rest of my purchases. I've had to do similar type of purchases at other stores where I have to get and pay for something at a specific check-out, while the rest can be at the regular checkout stations. Often, when I am in Home Depot, I'm only there for a tool or tools, or for non-tool items, rarely both. My amount of "inconvenience" would be very minimal.

As a manager of a retail store people have know idea how impactful theft is. The problem is only growing. As a customer I’ll put up with increased inconvenience as store merchandise is put under higher security and out of reach. I know that to not do so increases the ticket price to the actual customer. I’m so apposed to retail theft I’d rather the stores literally discriminate against certain demographics and ignore the racism that will inevitably be alleged. That bias was the primary weapon I used to identify potential thieves and give greater watchfulness to. This trend of ignore theft under certain amount is ridiculous. Theft is theft and should be prosecuted at all levels of loss. I think a fail proof rat trap should lock the doors automatically in front of and behind as goods pass thru the funnel and stop exit from the store until the problem is resolved.

Have a series of walkways ( like on cueing up for a Disney rides) before you leave the store so that directly walking out of a store is a thing of the past. Along the walkways would be merchandise detectors. If a signal goes off, a gate would close in front of the person leaving, allowing store personnel to inspect the goods. No one deterrent would be absolutely effective and customer cooperation would be needed to put up with the inconvenience.

It depends on the caliber of people visiting the store too. Both of the, Lowe's in my area are in more upscale neighborhoods where the scumbags either don't, or can't go. Home Depot is placed in the busiest area in town, and dead next to Wal-Mart. That area is so congested that my wife, and I hate going there, and try to avoid it at all costs. Dropping Wal-Mart felt a lot like when I dropped Facebook too. It felt like a huge, unnecessary burden had been lifted off my shoulders, and I don't miss it.

My biggest issue with Walmart is the frequent absence of prices. A lot of things I might be interested in buying on impulse invariably don't have a price, so I just leave it there and go home and contemplate how much I really want it and order from someone else. I shouldn't have to struggle as a customer.
