  • Loss Prevention Training: Organized Retail Crime
    "The Big Wheel Box"
In this video, George tells us another loss prevention apprehension story from his days working at Shopko in loss prevention and asset protection. In this one, George is on location in Bellevue Nebraska at what used to be Shopko Store #045. This story is an example of ORC or Organized Retail Crime. Organized retail crime costs retailers across the U.S. millions of dollars each year. These organized groups can be very creative in the methods in which they commit retail theft (such is the case in this story). Understanding ORC can be pivotal in developing asset protection strategies. It's very important that any loss prevention manager or loss prevention officer be aware of ORC and how to combat it.
If You're a Loss Prevention Manager or Loss Prevention Officer (current or former), we'd love to hear from you! If you or your crew have a story to tell, Please contact us. We'll figure out the best way for you to send us a video telling your craziest tale and we'll post it on the channel! We won't include your retailer name (so nobody gets in trouble), we'll just use your first name and geographical location. Check out the channel for some examples that we've posted from others. Our goal is to eventually share stories from across the globe!

Is there a sophisticated resource on this topic which details the ORC economy and supply chain in detail, and the strategies retailers utilise to address it legally, weighing up, liability, risks and financial implications. Everything I’ve found so far is basic, low level anecdotes from sources that don’t understand the bigger picture…

I've been out of the game for quite a few years, so unfortunately I don't have a good answer for you.

We use to have a lot of smash and grabs I caught one crew for over 45000 dollars worth of merchandise they had a truck full from retail from all over Atlantic Canada .

I used to work in the greater moncton area we use to get a lot from different provinces so we ended up having to license all asset protection all of Canada so we could ban the thief from stores in there provinces .

@@GeorgeLangabeer Melbourne Australia. After Covid hit the amount of orc’s have increased 10 fold. Getting an orc use to be existing as it was rare. Now it’s a normal thing haha
Have come across 4 in one day a few weeks ago that’s the highest I’ve had in a day

Very cool to hear from one of my LP Brothers & Sisters in Australia. Nice to know our family is Worldwide!
I’ve been wondering how COVID has influenced the ORC game. I was guessing there had to be a significant increase. Very interesting. Thanks for the comment!
On a side note...if you’ve been watching the videos on this playlist, the goal is to get other LPs to send me videos sharing their stories. If you look at some of the videos on the playlist, you can see some examples. So far it’s been LPs from the U.S., but It sure would be cool to get a story from Australia! Just saying...

@@GeorgeLangabeer unfortunately I can’t do any type of social media videos it’s against our contract. Very strict on being covert. Got 4 orcs today. I can give you information about it if you wish but I can’t put my face out there or my real name. I had put on my Facebook account that I worked for the secret services as a joke and I got pulled up on it although no one would believe it haha.

I use to be a prolific booster some years ago. I have since changed my life around and no longer use drugs don't even miss them..but I sure do miss the thrill and rush of hitting a mega run at a store. I find myself always looking for weaknesses in retailers that could be exploited. I would love to be a LP to try and outsmart the boosters ..but unfortunately, I don't think Id qualify for an LP job with all my thefts on my record even though it's all over 7 years old... Personally, i think LP would be way better if they had some former boosters working for them, just like the government hires hackers that get caught sometimes. Anyway interesting video, I remember people doing the Big Wheels box thing years ago. I always thought it was such a CRAZY technique. I mean spending all that time in the store looking SUS as hell haha hell no I could never have done it that way. I was strictly grab and go with slight variations like going out the loading dock door or the fire exit .. you guys have to make the fire door delays longer .. by the time anyone actually comes to look I was always long gone ..but maybe fire code mandates the alarm and delay can only hold for so long I guess.

Yep, very similar. A lot of people don’t realize that’s where the term “gypped” comes from. Like “you got gypped”. It comes from the gypsy thieves.

Best ORC guy would steal $2 million in suits every year, all over the country. Females would exchange/return: wrong size or color. Other males assisted him.
