When I was 7 years old I got caught shoplifting at a store. I was very scared. Security called my Father to come and get me. On the way home I was so relieved. I was Happy and smiling and thought that I was smarter than everyone else. Because I got away with it. When I got Home my Father gave me the SPANKING of my Life. I never stole anything again. smiles.

So I come from a past of...lets just call them "less savory dealings", and I'm here to tell you that the first tip will only stop people that are very new to the concept of shoplifting and are easily spooked because of the affiliated nervousness that commiting a crime for the first time can bring. Once someone has a taste for the craft and has become comfortable doing what they do, they're much less likely to care if you stop them to talk, and will likely even smile to your face and chat you up as though they were your best of friends. This stands doubly true of a person that is gifted with charisma. They may be wearing stolen items and you would never know the difference because of their seemingly relaxed demeanor.

There was some thing I noticed when I used to work shoplifters will place items throughout the store in different locations usually near exits so that way they’re easy to get to you, If you’re working in the spot a bag full of items that your store sells near the front door or near any exit that is unattended you should always bring it to the service desk, or re-shop the items. Re-shopping the items “even better returning them to the service desk“ will stop the shoplifter in their tracks immediately especially if they’re storing the items there on their way to get out.
If there are items that are from your store that are in a bag from another store the best thing to do is to return them to the service desk.

Thank you for this video! I've never seen so much shoplifting as in the last 2yrs here in Hawaii! I work in a souvenir/clothing type shop. The stock is visitor oriented. One half of our sizable store is clothing. One half of the store is little gift items & jewelry. Most of the jewelry is not under or behind glass. Often, I notice girls put the jewelry in their hand, then place their cell phone over it and eventually walk out the store. My boss doesn't think its necessary to have locked doors on the dressing rooms, or security tags on the clothing. However we have security cameras. You walk thru the jewelry section first. The shoplifters pick up the jewelry they want & enter the clothing section. They then go into the fitting room & put the jewelry and/or clothing into their bags.. I am unable to get through to my boss that customers should not be allowed to carry jewelry into the clothing section, especially not into the fitting room. When they make a jewelry selection I tell them that I can hold that item for them. Often, they get upset, some even leave the store. I think those are the shoplifters and not just a shopper upset that we have certain security measures. I wish you could come to Hawaii sometime & see what a "shoplifters paradise" our store is.😑😬

Do not put up camera signs if you do not have cameras. You will assume vicarious liability and open yourself to lawsuits. Just get cameras.

Most guards don't bother cause they know there's 24 hours surveillance cameras in the store unless the retail staff notice some one dodgy they will let the gaurd know.

As a shopper, if I saw a store that had a sign alerting people of increased theft, I would leave immediately as I wouldn't feel safe.

    1) thieves don’t want to be recognized
    2) use signage
    3) use a code phrase

If you want to stop shoplifters, just require a store membership and check it at the door. This works better than increased policing.

Then u have to become the thief . If not then this job is not for u . Every army that defeated Rome had a commander who fought with Rome first and knew there ways and used it to full advantage . the darkness will show u the light

@@mikeypeinado383This is actually really good advice, a large percentage of loss prevention or asset protection professionals come from a place of having been the thief at some point in their lives. It's sort of a 'it takes a thief to spot a thief' mentality.
