Green neons are among my favorites. I have around 35 in my 75 gallon tank. The oldest are over 5 years now and virtually the same size as my cardinal tetras. They are also like little piranhas at feeding time.
I really like green neons. We ended up getting 40 of them in a 55 gallon tank. Decided on these guys since they're smaller. The smaller they are the more you can get!
I agree with them being hardier than regular neons. I kept regular neons several times in the past and have ended up losing them all. These green neons are super hardy which I was surprised about because I heard they are mostly wild caught.

I'm still a big advocate for the standard neon tetra. I haven't lost a single one that I've bought and there's seventeen of them in my tank. They're living in liquid rock with some platies and cories. I feel they have a brighter color than the greens. The greens are probably pretty decent still but my heart leans strongly toward the standard blues and their bold color.

I had 5 diamond head neons (DHN) and lost 2 due to them jumping out by accident when chasing each other I assume (I got a lid), so now I have 3 and want to bring the shoal size back up. However, my LFS doesn't have any DHN and I love the look of these. Would they just think of each other as the same? Or would they be like rival schools? Thanks if anyone can answer.

In the video they stay in the bottom half of the tank, so am I correct to assume they would make a relatively safe choice for a lidless tank? I have a riparium style tank which for now is only inhabited by bottomfeeders and could use a splash of colour. BTW this could be a topic for one of your list videos, "Top 10 fish for open tanks" or something :).
I’m currently considering a school of these beautiful fish for my established 29 gallon planted community. I already have Corys, honey gourami, snails and amano shrimp, all full grown. Would a school of green neons fit well with what I have? My concern particularly is the amanos if they would go after small fish that aren’t full grown yet.
We have been able to keep the fin-nipping down by keeping tetras well fed with bettas. Endlers can work but I prefer that combo in a 20 gallon or larger.
would they be okay in a 35 liter tank with 1 betta or would that tank be too small? i just started getting into aquariums and ive set up a 35 liter tank that is now cycling. in a few weeks it'll be ready for its first inhabitants and i know i want a betta so i'm looking into tankmates but i'm mostly concerned about tanksize at the moment. hesitating to stick to just shrimp and snails instead of addingfish tankmates
@@PrimeTimeAquatics it is a slightly longer thank but after taking a look into the species I don’t think they would be very happy 😅 I think ill stick to the shrimp ☺️
I'm setting up a 55g community tank piece by piece as things go on sale. Looking for advice on a few things. I HAVE decided that green neons will be my schooling fish, with honey guaramis here and there, and a pair of Kribensis. Will those fish work together? Also, I like the idea of not having a hood, and using either hyger LEDs that lay on top, or a clamp on LED so I can adjust the height...not sure if you can adjust the height on the ones you just sit in top of the tank. Lastly which HOB filter is best. Seachem Tidal 75g is what I'm leaning towards. I'm under the impression that hob is easier for maintenance. I watched this video about the fish and your video on sponge filters how to for dummies basically. Oh for fish I'd probably have 1 or 2 clown plecos, or dwarf spotted plecos if I can find them and win the lottery. I'm planning on having a few pieces of real driftwood and cholla wood, but a recommendation on a certain type of driftwood wood would be great. The only live plants will be floating and most likely frogbit unless I decide to give red root floaters another try...killed it last time. I'm still very much a beginner only having my 15g for 7 months now, but I've already got the bug for a bigger tank.
They are one of the most beautiful fish but unfortunately in my experience are way too timid and will always be hiding. That could be because I didn't keep a large enough school though.
Mine look sooo much like the cardinal ones, if mine werent so young id have a hard time telling them apart.. when i first bought them they had very little red now the red is pretty noticeable. Very disappointed

Its said neons / cardinals are finnippers, is green neon the same if I put with my halfmoon betta? what about endler livebearers?
We have been able to keep the fin-nipping down by keeping tetras well fed with bettas. Endlers can work but I prefer that combo in a 20 gallon or larger.
What’s the best dither fish that swims in the top 1/2 for these green neons. I have had 20 of them for about a year and I never see them
Maybe some type of rasbora? Also - guppies and endlers tend to be fearless!
I'm planning on a tank of green neons with chili rasboras. There colours should stand out and the chili's dart all over the place, especially the top.
Very nice
would they be okay in a 35 liter tank with 1 betta or would that tank be too small? i just started getting into aquariums and ive set up a 35 liter tank that is now cycling. in a few weeks it'll be ready for its first inhabitants and i know i want a betta so i'm looking into tankmates but i'm mostly concerned about tanksize at the moment. hesitating to stick to just shrimp and snails instead of addingfish tankmates
If it were a longer tank that might work. A cube might be a little small for them.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics it is a slightly longer thank but after taking a look into the species I don’t think they would be very happy 😅 I think ill stick to the shrimp ☺️
Nice!
Have you bred the green neon? Just wondered if you might have some pointers?
Not on purpose, but they breed like most other tetras, rasboras and barbs.
Isn't the water for neons and snails supposed to be very different in hardness?
In nature it is, but in most people’s aquariums it almost never is different.
Can I keep these together with the rosy neon tetra?
Sure!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you.
Can you house six green neon tetra four crystal red shrimp and two peacock gudgeons in a five gallon tank?
I usually reserve five gallon tanks for extremely small rasboras or a single betta.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics So is it not possible to house them in that size of a tank?
Only temporarily ( which is what I'm doing atm)
Can they live with one German Blue Ram? Thx
Sure!
What are those plants floating on the top?
A mix of hornwort and bacopa
@@PrimeTimeAquatics cheers
Impossible to find at my LFS
Would it be okay to have 5 of these in a 5 gal tank?
I personally don't like keeping them in anything less than a 10 gallon. Have you thought about Dwarf Rasbora, Merah Rasbora or Chili Rasboras?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I’ll check those out! Would you recommend any tank mates with those like one small shrimp or snail, or is the tank too small?
@@OKonskiFamcurious how your tank is doing
Good Morning.
How is it that you pronounce betta as it should be and your better half refuses to do so?Love you both.
60 for shipping is nuts. Flip can go flip
My wife and me decided to have 20-30 of these and cherry shrimp in out 40 gallon long videos will be posted soon 👍
I saw those at Aquarium Co-Op the other day.......think I just found the fish for my 29 gal
A big school would be amazing in a 29 gallon.
My neons are aggressive with each other! Any solutions?
If the tank is smaller than a 20 gallon there may not be much you can do. If you have at least a 20 gallon, having a group of at least 15 should help.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics mine is 20 g and I have 8 neons and 8 amber tetras!
Green neon or gold neon or cardinal with a hellboy betta ?
They’re all great! I love cardinals if you have the water parameters for them.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ended up ordering 10 green neon for my 15 flex
They are one of the most beautiful fish but unfortunately in my experience are way too timid and will always be hiding. That could be because I didn't keep a large enough school though.
Ya - group size and tankmates can have a big impact!
@@PrimeTimeAquaticsWhat was the minimum school size in your experience? I kept something like 10 and that wasn't enough.
What about zebra danios?
Sure
Mine look sooo much like the cardinal ones, if mine werent so young id have a hard time telling them apart.. when i first bought them they had very little red now the red is pretty noticeable. Very disappointed
They might diverge from one another again as they get larger. Usually cardinals and green neons look very different from one another.
they call them green neon tetras but they look more blue i prefer the kubotai rasboras they are bright green under blue and white light
Both the neon tetra and the green neon tetra are known to be fin nippers. Be careful.
I haven’t seen that at all
Does,your snail eat the plants?
Ours don’t
is it me or do they look more blueish turquoise on camera.. beautiful fish
It's funny that they're called green neon tetras, they looks mostly blue to me.
They look green-turquoise when the sun hits them from a certain angle.
With the proper care, this species is far more fluorescent than cardinals and regular neon.
I bought 10 almost 2yrs ago and still have 10 now.
Nice!
I have had my group for over 2 years , and been trying to breed them on and off the whole time ,,,,, no luck , sooooooo hard arggghhhhhhh help me jerry !!!!!
Why guppies? Thought guppies like harder water.
They do, but we also keep green neons in hard water with no issues.
