I cried a lot in this scene, this movie is a masterpiece, I love Chiyo, I love all the characters, it is an absolutely charming and beautiful movie, Zhang is an incredible and beautiful actress
By far the most romantic scene in the history of cinematography ever!! The script, the facial expressions, the pace, the embodiment of the feelings...the bitter deep love, the release of a sigh, the overwhelming gasp at hope after prolonged years of excruciating despair, like that drop of water that touches the throat of a thirsty outcast...it is too much excellence in one small scene. Brings me to tears each time.
Every bone in my body becomes unable to feel romance in the air when someone 50 years old tells a 20 year old he was in love with her the second he saw her 10 year old self walking about the street 💀
Why this relationship isn't weird: The chairman did not have any attraction to Chiyo when she was a child. He was just showing her kindness. He only met her once. They didn't have a relationship where he raised her or groomed her. He met her one time, forgot about her, then he saw her again many years later when she was spying on Pumpkin and decided to help her out by sending Mameha her way. After that, he became interested in her for the woman she had become. In Chiyo's case, it's not weird that she developed feelings for him when she was younger because she was a child. Kids develop crushes on adults all the time. Think of a kid crushing on their teacher. As she got older, her feelings developed from a child-like crush to a more mature attraction. It would've been perverted if the chairman liked her back then because he was the adult but in Chiyo's case, it's harmless. I am someone who is easily disturbed by a romantic relationship if it's depicted with a weird dynamic or anything that could be perceived as grooming, but I think the criticism this relationship receives is undeserved.
Nor saying this is okay. But it was a different time and age. My great grandmother was a child when she was married to an old man. Creepy I know. But different time and age. It was a great movie. Despite the creepy men
“And yet, to learn of kindness after so much unkindness to understand that a little girl with more courage than she knew, would find her prayers were answered, can that not be called happiness?”
This line made the whole movie. Because the whole time you’re thinking “this isn’t enough!” and want her and him to be together, but life is cruel and unfair, and like it said “these are the memoirs of a Geisha”, basically saying this is her lot in life, which she wanted and prayed for as a child. What a perfect line.
I just saw this movie tonight and I was extremely shocked and disappointed, the movie turned out to be way different than what I expected. It was very weird….
Although I find it strange that he had his own children when they first met on that bridge when she was just a child herself, the ending scene of this movie is the most romantic scene ever.

Two things to reflect on: 1. Even today, our media churns out feel-good stories about individual kindnesses within a horrific system but if you seek to change the system, you face vicious backlash. How does that influence the way we read stories like this? 2. The author was neither a woman nor Japanese, and the geisha he interviewed in his research said that he had been disrespectful. How does that influence the way the story was written? “That’s how it was” isn’t the end of the discussion. It’s the beginning of a whole new one.

No doubt my favorite movie of all time. Pain, Abandonment, loneliness, mixed in with Hope, Compassion, and kindness. Please read the story of Arthur Golden , an American who researched everything and went to Japan to learn first hand about the lives of Geisha and the book published in 1997. The story of Nitta Sayuri to becoming and working as a geisha in Kyoto before and after WW2
How is this movie not a 9/10 at least on IMDB? The relationship between those two characters alone makes this movie unforgettable. The body language and facial expressions are absolutely on point. @@janeoct agreed. This isn't really a happy ending at all. In Geisha: A Life , that woman didn't put up with being second fiddle and found someone else. Trust me; find someone who puts you first.

It is a bittersweet film to watch. I feel sorry for the lives all of these women endured. I’m glad that Sayuri and the Chairman finally found love, with one another. It is something I’m still hoping for, with someone, whom I hope actually loved me, some years ago, but life’s timing was off. Still, I feel so sorry for Hatsumomo, Pumpkin and the other women, much in the same way I’ve felt about life. It has never been good enough, for me to sometimes win alone. I’m still struck by the losses of those who never will. Hatsumomo and Pumpkin were likely seen as embittered, merely in and of themselves, when their bitterness came from the outside in, spoiling their joy. But, as I’ve learned in life, people punish those, who don’t make their peace with Hell. I hope, for them, too, they find happiness. My own story doesn’t have nearly this depth, yet I still hope for the same ending.
I am profoundly frustrated by the way people shut their eyes to this, especially since the book itself doesn’t mince words about it. Pretty much all of the women, even Mameha, are bitter about the way their society treats them, and Sayuri both hates the way they treat her and understands why they’re doing it.

I just had my daughter watch Memoirs of a Geisha and she loved it as much as I did when it came out. It's a film that I wish everyone knew. It's so beautiful in every way.
A man sees a child on a bridge, instead of buying her contract or helping her, he left to be sold into sexual slavery or the life of the Geisha, another word for prostitution. Beautiful clothes and sweeping music still doesn't cover the real tragedy of the geisha, it's amazing how little it takes to make people gush.

0:55 In the book, right at this moment she immediately pulled out the handkerchief he gave her all the years ago and all the explanation wouldn't be needed. I'm disappointed the movie did not go with the book on this one.
I read the book years ago, when I was in my early 20s and thought it great. Just finished reading it again not even an hour ago, it's still good, but hits a lot different on many levels. Especially the last few pages, in this day and age, talking about change and reminiscing on the past. I want to watch the movie, though this scene right here shows me that no matter how good the movie, the book is (almost coughITcough nobody needs to read how the kids celebrated ohmigosh cough) always better. 4 minutes of screen time do not capture all the nuances, emotions, and so forth that the writer crafted so convincingly with words alone. To read the book, you would believe it was like a Japanese version of The Diary of Anne Frank with a happier ending. This movie still looks beautiful, though, and I do want to see it.
I love the book and read it every time I want to get lost in another world. So I get what you are saying. The movie has made some changes but it holds its own quite well. I have an anniversary special DVD which shows all the efforts that were put into making the movie. The sheer production effort is simply fantastic. It brings a lot of the vivid colors of Japan alive. And of course the acting is amazing, especially by Gong Li as Hatsumomo. Do give it a try.....
The problem with reading a book is that your imagination has no limitations to it, such is why the book is often better than the movie. As a story moves closer to reality, the more constrained it becomes, the more limitations are placed upon it. Thus the closer to reality it gets, the more disappointments it will have.
@@yoursafeplace8476 This was my issue. The imagination part. I've watched countless of Asian movies that I knew majority of these actors and it kind of removed the enjoyment for me. They looked the part I guess but the nuances a Japanese person would have put into these roles would have elevated this movie more. I have nothing against the Chinese actors. I love all of them but, again, I was hoping to at least have more Japanese actors in these roles. I wish they could remake this with a purely Japanese cast with deep rooted Japanese traditions showcased like how it seemed in the book. I doubt that will ever happen though.
I get a goosebump with each word of this scene. These actors are portraying the characters in a perfect way. And I’m totally agree with the idea that LOVE is blind and has no boundaries, so if two people love each other truly nothing matters. Best movie ever. ❤
I always recognized the Chairman actor as Dr. Serizawa in Godzilla but just realized today when I was rewatching the second movie with him that Chiyo’s actress is in it, too, as Dr. Chen. For some reason it made me laugh a lot because of them reuniting in such a different kind of movie
When this was first popular- and I was young- I thought it was romantic but it's actually creepy. He saw a sad, pretty little girl and immediately thought she should become a geisha? 😬 How about buying her contract and having her work in his house where she'd be treated better instead? I mean, I know geishas had it a bit better than being a servant but he referred her into a kind of prostitution. Where she was auctioned off for her v-card. Her life was filled with pretty clothes and she wasn't beaten, but he's no hero or rescuer. He waited for his opportunity so he could keep her on the side as his mistress, saw her as an object to own and bed just like the others. What a catch, how romantic. 😒
Also, if you read the book, he married with two children. It was briefly mentioned in the movie when he bought the sweet ice for Chiyo. "I buy these for my children every spring". So yeah, a married man spots a child on a bridge and decides to maker her a geisha so he can have her as his mistress.... wow, how romantic
He is rich and handsome. He seems to be under the impression that he is in love with her. He isn't cruel, nor dumb, nor depressing. He is basically a god at this point. I'm tiredly joking but also, realistically, if you look around, what more can we expect of a man. I will also be looking for a man who pays me respect but I will not be surprised if I die alone.
I agree, I still wish she ended up with Nobu. He was honourable, literally nothing but kind to her. He never came on to her or tried to take anything that wasn't his, he didn't even bid on her virginity. I don't think he had a wife or children either? She made him softer, his only fault was that he was "ugly" and was missing half an arm.
So... They find out that they were in love with each other without really knowing each other?? I'm still lost on all this geisha ownership stuff!!! Great movie!!
For all the young people weirded out age gaps arent that uncommon when you get older. Havent you heard that saying my one true love is not born yet? The chairman initial feelings weren't romantic in the slightest. When you deny the hearts desires it often causes great pain. The ladder can be said as well. Watch Tristan and isolde or sleeping dictionary. Rant over
I guess this is definitive proof that 39 is young, because all I’ve got is “I GUESS that’s the best case scenario she could have had, but that power imbalance!”
2:19 "every step i have taken, since i was that child on the bridge... has been to bring myself closer to you" the first time i heard that line, my god. my heart absolutely MELTED 🫠
Regardless of the plausibility of these characters falling in love when Chiyo was a child doesn't matter to me. I can accept suspension of disbelief because the actors who portraited the characters were brilliant. It deserved the acclaim it received, and then some. Rob Marshall did a superb job as director.
That guy is marries with two children. If he really wanted a better life for her, why not buy out her contract and bring her into his own house, where she is then treated fairly and with respect? He has money and connections, he could've looked for a good husband for her, when she has the age. But instead he send Mameha to groom her to become a Geisha (Entertainment for rich men), so that she can become his Mistress later on?! What???
I actually like that it doesn’t gloss over how shitty history was for women. I’m more annoyed by the way people are treating this “best of a bunch of bad options” situation like the height of romance.

@@pinkwonderpower7906 , "Are geisha prostitutes, or have they ever been? The answer flat out is NO. While geisha arose from the courtesan world, during the Edo period they established themselves as part of the entertainment class and were never prostitutes themselves."
@@andiestone okay but how are you gonna explain him falling in love with a child
@@YinYang333 Everyone knows it is wrong. The movie is about how she became a Geisha. I mean, it's wrong. I'm not going to argue that. Sh*t.
@@andiestone you are a gta ncp
The pinnacle of emotions in the best of film.
If I didn't think he was married with children I would love this scene, she lived as his lover all her life..😒😒😒
Yeah, totally agree.
It's kind of unsatisfactory & bittersweet.
To be fair, loveless arranged marriages were still a thing at this time in Japan. But yeah the fact that he was married was really swept under the rug.
@@Sam-nz3vj yes love was considered to be the second thing in marriage first was chores. That's why men often rely upon geishas and oiran to experience love.
@@devidevathaI also think the fact that it was written by a white man matters. It reminds me of that scene near the end of Pretty Woman where Richard Gere’s character is trying to be a saviour to Julia Roberts’ character but he’s not fully seeing things through her eyes.
I love this movie! Beautifull soundtrack. Great book also
Me encanta. "Cada paso que he dado es para estar cerca de ti".....hermosa!!
I literally cried so much during this movie😭😭😭😭😭✨ loved it so much as a growing up girl.
0:55 In the book, right at this moment she immediately pulled out the handkerchief he gave her all the years ago and all the explanation wouldn't be needed. I'm disappointed the movie did not go with the book on this one.
Love this movie...
I cherished it...had watched many times...love happens❤❤☺️
I have watched this movie over 20 times but I still love it. Still makes have the feels
20 is the age gap between the actors
@@seannatarajan1131 hu I never thought about there age. But age don't really bother me since my husband and I are 25 yrs apart lol
@@AlmaWadeCrymsm yeah it ain’t bad or anything. It was just weird that he met her as a kid.
What’s the name of a book?
So powerful. So moving.
My daughter and I love this movie 😊
Someday I will hear the Truth I have been waiting for. Only time will tell.
Patience
One of the best movies ever made... This pure love between these two are an example for all the fake couples out there today!!!
She’s his mistress.
The first man to be kind to her and she pledged her allegience to him. How starved she was of love!
Powerful words and emotions. I cry each time.
Love This MOVIE AT THE TOP OF MY FAVORITE ROMANTIC MOVIE AND STORY IS SUPERB❤
Memoirs …..left deep hidden meaning after leading such a painful life
I could watch this movie every day
I have to cry everytime I watch this scene. So beautiful ❤
I get a goosebump with each word of this scene. These actors are portraying the characters in a perfect way.
And I’m totally agree with the idea that LOVE is blind and has no boundaries, so if two people love each other truly nothing matters. Best movie ever. ❤
This is my favorite movie ❤ the story is truly amazing 👏
Beautiful story
Uma das mais belas histórias de amor do cinema 😢😢
Will always be my favorite movie of all time
😢❤ so sad sometimes people loose so much time to open their hearts to each other

favorite scene ever!
Beautiful Movie
How great to all the people behind the scenes.. They can find such a familiar face of small chiyo and the adult one....
That means help a girl child... and she will be yours after grown up 🐱
I always recognized the Chairman actor as Dr.
Ikr 🤮
She made him softer, his only fault was that he was "ugly" and was missing half an arm.
yet mizuage was a real thing ..just imagine being a girl anywhere back in those days
حلم لن يتحقق ابدا لكنه لم ولن ينسى سيظل محفورا في قلبي في أعماق اعماقه
Hermosa escena final. La adoré❤
Ah, what a gorgeous man. I would swoon.
So... They find out that they were in love with each other without really knowing each other?? I'm still lost on all this geisha ownership stuff!!! Great movie!!
Recitazione molto molto bella degli attori.
La storia è appassionante
Visto più volte il film . Complimenti per l'ottimo lavoro
Rant over
Guys. The French president is married to someone 25 years older than him. Anything is possible.
@@wchunh Im 13 years older than my bf. When i was graduating high school, he was only 5 years old. 😲
No.
I guess this is definitive proof that 39 is young, because all I’ve got is “I GUESS that’s the best case scenario she could have had, but that power imbalance!”
El libro es maravilloso!
La película sumamente bella
I cannot forget this movies I love this movie so much also chiyo and chairman🥰🥰I wish this true in life ken Watanabe and zhang ziyi 🥰🥰
I don't believe in love but I'm sure it's beautiful........I've watched this movie in Netflix few years ago it was pretty good
2:19 "every step i have taken, since i was that child on the bridge... has been to bring myself closer to you"
the first time i heard that line, my god. my heart absolutely MELTED 🫠
Regardless of the plausibility of these characters falling in love when Chiyo was a child doesn't matter to me. I can accept suspension of disbelief because the actors who portraited the characters were brilliant. It deserved the acclaim it received, and then some. Rob Marshall did a superb job as director.
Prachtig deze film 👍🏼😍
Zeker!
"PURE" LOVE ❤️🔥
It's true love 😢❤❤
For me, it's not that weird.. my parents have 20 yrs of age gap.. i don't wonder why they become lovers... 😅😅
This is my one of favourite film!!!🥹🥹🥹
That guy is marries with two children.
If he really wanted a better life for her, why not buy out her contract and bring her into his own house, where she is then treated fairly and with respect? He has money and connections, he could've looked for a good husband for her, when she has the age.
But instead he send Mameha to groom her to become a Geisha (Entertainment for rich men), so that she can become his Mistress later on?! What???
I actually like that it doesn’t gloss over how shitty history was for women. I’m more annoyed by the way people are treating this “best of a bunch of bad options” situation like the height of romance.
wow amazing❤❤
I would love to watch this film again, but it hasn't been available in any streaming services or RUclips for a long time :'(
Beautiful scene 🔥
another kind - far better than an empress or a queen I say !
Why does he remind me of Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables!?
I don't know...Now that you say it...
Oh my god!!! I completely agree!
We must be kindred spirits ☺️
Her eyes are si pretty. They could have not hidden by lens
