When Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo) returns to the okiya, she finds Hatsumomo (Gong Li) having sex with her boyfriend (Karl Yune), Koichi, whom she is not supposed to be seeing. When caught, Hatsumomo lies, blaming Chiyo for stealing and attempting to run away. But Chiyo tells that it’s untrue and Mother (Kaori Momoi) forbids Hatsumomo from seeing Koichi again, with everyone barred from leaving the okiya at night except to attend work engagements. The next night, Chiyo sneaks out and accidentally falls off a rooftop.

What’s the Memoirs of a Geisha movie about?
In 1929, a young girl from a poor fishing village in Japan, Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), and her sister Satsu (Samantha Futerman) are sold by their father to the owner of a geisha house. They are quickly separated and Chiyo finds herself confronted with the strictness of the housekeeper and the harshness of the life of an apprentice geisha. She also has to face the jealousy-ridden hostility of Hatsumomo (Gong Li), the star geisha of the house, who succeeds in relegating her to the status of a simple servant. Chiyo has lost all hope when she is suddenly seduced by the kindness of a man (Ken Watanabe), chairman of an electricity company, with whom she falls in love. She then decides to do everything she can to deserve his attention. Another geisha, Mameha (Michelle Yeho), takes her under her wing and begins to teach her the rudiments of the trade by becoming her "big sister". Thanks to Mameha and helped by her determination, she soon becomes, under the name Sayuri (Zhang Ziyi), a famous and admired geisha throughout Hanamachi. But success does not bring her closer to the one she secretly loves because a geisha no longer has the right to love. Moreover, Nobu (Kōji Yakusho), the president's close friend, is interested in Sayuri and interposes himself between them. It will take the Japanese rout of World War II and the end of age-old traditions for Sayuri and the president to finally be together.

Am I the only one who noticed how her tears didn’t get lost in the middle of all that water she had in the background. We have to address this. We can distinguish between her tears and the water from the rain around her eyes. AMAZING 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

She threw a little girl under the bus lying that she was stealing and letting her get beat. If she hadn’t done that chiyo wouldn’t have ratted on her. It’s her own fault.
like a child, like a grown woman this scene is so bad for them both. they ruined each other in this scene and they both realize their fate. so their spitefulness especially Gong LI's character was for nothing. She is a great actress too.
This koichi dude has no spine. He could’ve easily taken Hatsumomo out of the okiya and live out the rest of their days together. At the beginning of the film the mother of that house said Hatsumomo earned enough money to clear her debt. Her boyfriend damn well knew she was free of this debt and yet he was too scared to take her out of that place, and therefore broke that bond with her forever.
There’s definitely a much turn for the worst of Hatsumomo’s situation, sending her deep into forever, madness and envy.
def! i found that so annoying, despite everything i was rooting for hatsumomo to escape with him. she looked so much in love...
Based on the book, Koichi is married, so in this case, Hatsumomo needed a Danna, so she ended up having to keep working there.

Koichi had a wife and children. Plus Hatsumomo was just his side chick lover.
Even though Hatsumomo was free, perhaps Koichi was not nearly rich enough to support her as a danna per se. He probably can’t even afford to but a silk kimono for a geisha.
GongLi is so gorgeous in this movie.
My favorite part was when mother slapped Hatsumomo with THAT HAND. That was a savage way to say "you filthy bitch!!!"

Cause she wanted the okiya for her, and chiyo could be her rival in the future, cause she had a unique beauty and could make a lot of money from that and then becoming the okasan heir, also hatsumomo needed a reason for being in the rain and not inside the house

It affect their job actually. Being with someone else man is not desireable and degrading for men at that time. Not only that, it remove the "exclusivity" of the Geisha for the patrons. For the Geisha herself, they usually quit their job after having a lover so basically ending their career.

The movie exaggerated it most Okaasans wouldn't care if their geisha were going out with some dude and getting her freak on as long as she kept it hush hush. Also you're not supposed to bring your men back to the okiya and have sex with them that's a big no no .What she should have done is go down to an inn and let Koichi dick her down there. But she wasn't clever, she could have done like mameha and got her own place get a danna to fund her have Koichi come there and do their thing. She was being reckless and stupid
