    This instructional is fantastic; bang on to the settings, no crapping on, and plenty shown in such a short time. And, great how you go from easy to more difficult, it’ll suit the buyers of this camera. A great bridge camera by the way!

      Seven years since release and with all the tech enhancements to every brand including Sony - this camera is still relevant. It was 3 years ahead of it's time then with the stacked sensor. For its intended purpose (the Swiss army knife of cameras) - nothing comes close for the price. To get the same focal length range, FPS capability, AF ability, slo mo video capability - you'd need to spend $4,500 while having to lug around a minimum of 2 lenses...one being long and heavy.

    And finally, a tutorial that actually tells you how to set-up and use the "rather complicated" settings menu's.
    I already know how good the camera is, I just need to learn how to get the best out of it. JAY full marks.

    Hi Jay:
    I have been using my Mark IV and want to tell everyone, this is the camera for you.
    I have two previous head injuries and programmed the settings by myself, not that I felt I could do it.
    As with all new cameras there were a couple of glitches that with jay's help I fixed.
    I was sure this Mark IV was better than any camera I had researched and I feel that is true.
    This is what sold me the most in deciding to buy this camera:
    24-600mm equivalent F2.4-4 and Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T Optical lens coating. 18 lens elements in 13 groups including 8 ED glass elements, 2 ED aspherical lenses and 1 Super ED lens.
    No bridge camera can offer you the optics which are the core to making the photos you take worth the money you invested.
    Thank you Jay for being patient with me for advice when I thought I was buying the Mark III.

I've tried experimenting with auto and p modes but will try shutter priority next time. Mainly basketball inside gyms . Was not able to lock down focus on moving subject as much as I'd like too. Thanks for your tips. What an awsome camera. Shocked that it's still holding its sticker value years later

    I do wildlife and bird photography. The Exposure Compensation dial is invaluable in dark or too bright a scene.
    As you look through the viewfinder and turn the dial, what you are about to photograph turns darker or brighter.
    The end result is taking the exact photo you wanted without disappointment later.

    Question please about buffer clearing rates in jpg ,raw, raw+ jpg.
    24 fps
    Is the buffer really slow and how long to clear please?
    Example is shooting my son's soccer and I have to wait 3 minutes to clear the buffer every burst I could potentially loose 10+minutes in game time.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 лет назад

      The same settings I showed here in the video should work for you depending on your needs. The ISO levels will most likely be pretty high, so you may need to raise the Auto ISO limit to a higher value if your shutter speed is not fast enough. I would go for shutter priority mode and the slowest shutter speed you can get away with while still getting sharp captures. The slower the shutter speed the lower the ISO level will be. You want the action to be captured sharp though, so this needs to be checked several times and tested I would say ;) I hope that helps!! Jay

    Very helpful - learned a couple things. SCN is an interesting mode I would never have used before. And the expandable AF spot - have you used the lock on AF expand flexible spot very much?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the comments and yes, next video is coming out in a minute and talks about Lock On AF Expand Flexible Spot towards the end ;) Scene mode really is an awesome feature! The camera really is smart, and often times letting the tool do it's job is much easier than setting the camera up in full manual mode for example. For example, at the park with the kids and just want to get some good photos, but don't want to take away from time with the kids playing with camera settings? Then go for full auto or a scene mode and just enjoy yourself while letting the camera do its job. Trust me it works!

    Jay, good video. Could the RX10 IV be used to shoot video of night sports and produce acceptable results? A use case might be HS football under the well lit conditions.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the comments and question!! Yeah, it could be used, but the ISO will most likely be really high with the fast shutter speeds required, and the results will not be the greatest I'm thinking. The A6500 with fast glass would have an edge in this scenario for sure, but clearly will cost way more....

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 лет назад

      I pay $10 a month for Lightroom and Photoshop which isn't to bad.... As far as free goes, you have Gimp which is similar to photoshop. If you have a Mac, iPhoto is pretty good!. As far as other "on your computer" photo editing software goes:
      Capture One Express for Sony is the most powerful for free I think: www.phaseone.com/en/Download-Sony.aspx
      I've also heard good things about:
      Photoscape: photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php
      Paint.net is another: www.getpaint.net/index.html
      Gimp is like Photoshop, but Free: www.gimp.org/downloads/
      Paint.net is another: www.getpaint.net/index.html
      You can also upload your photos to Google and create galleries, photo books, and edit the images here: photos.google.com/
      I hope that helps,
      Jay

    I used this camera yesterday for indoor ice hockey. Mixed results. Shutter priority at 400 and iso at 800 I still had a little grain. in camera view finder looked blury on subject. Not sure what this was about. Sometimes camera focus hunted in and out when shutter held down as I was tracking a hockey player. If I selected a shot at times the subject was completely out of focus. I am new to this camera. I have had a A6000 with better results., its not there yet for IQ. Likely camera setup and me, but concerned.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 лет назад

      Did you set the camera for continuous AF? AF-C mode will track the subjects as they move... The AF depending on what zoom you are at can be a little slow if making drastic changes in depth of field, but otherwise it should be very snappy for what you were trying to do. It does take some practice though for sure. You can also change the size of your focus area, which may help!! As far as the blurry in viewfinder, is it always? If so, adjust the diaplor on the eyepiece for your vision, it may be out of adjustment... Also, when in doubt zoom out a bit. The less zoom the easier it is for the camera to focus, and you can crop in on your subject in post if needed.

    • @codyhanthorn4270
      @codyhanthorn4270 5 лет назад

      @@Jason_Hermann yes af-c I ran the whole time. My vision is 20x20, but maybe my eye sees it different. I'll adjust the diopler. Also I was up top shooting pics meaning the only light was off the ice so maybe tomorrow when I shoot I'll be more parallel. The iso at 800 zoomed in did seem to show considerable grain for what I expected.

    Thanks Jay. Can I get your $0.02 based on your experiences with Sony gear? I'm torn between dropping $1,700 for the RX10m4 or $2,900 for the A6500 / FE 70-200mm F4. I'll be shooting soccer, 50% stills /50% video. What are your thoughts between the two?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Mark, you are in the position of all positions. That is the decision to make currently if in this market and I can't really say which way I would go. For the money, the RX10 IV is a way better deal I would say. Clearly it lacks the much larger APS-C sensor and the ability to change optics however, so that is the issues at hand. Is the money and extra weight worth the better quality APS-C sensor format output and optical flexibility? I can tell you the larger sensor format depth of field separation is incredible and this is why the full frame format is the bees knees for portraits and pro field sports. The APS-C A6500 sensor format is the perfect compromise to depth of field, low light abilities, and cost I would say. All that being said, the RX10 IV has a fairly large 1" sensor and you do get some good separation if you work the lens to your advantage in that regard. For example: RX10 IV @ Max Zoom and being fairly close to the subject will yield killer separation, but at 200mm f/4 it's not as good as the larger sensor formats and is noticeable.
      For Video the RX10 IV has a huge advantage in the built in 24-600mm powerzoom optics department and slow-motion abilities, but all the other sensor format differences mentioned above remain the same.
      I hope that helps and good luck!
      Jay

      Jay SonyAlphaLab thanks for your input. The A6500's sub-stellar 1080p60 video quality was another thing pushing me towards the RX10 even more. I realize that everything is going 4k, but sometimes 1080 is sufficient. I haven't seen any reviewers comment on the RX10m4's 1080 video quality yet, so I've delayed making my decision. On the flip side, the A6500's IBIS is definitely better than the RX10's OSS. Thanks again for your comments.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 лет назад

      So far the 1080p video quality on the RX10 IV looks pretty good to me, but I have not compared it to anything else yet. I agree about the A6500 IBIS as well!
