I love how they set this up. The whole time people have been saying she doesn’t have a strong voice and Curtis says she’s only a star cause her voice has no character. Then she busts this out like a big middle finger to him as if to say “I’ll show you character bitch”. Gives me chills every time.

@@carteranimationz2897 She does, but it's less of a showstopper. There's a sung scene between Deena & Curtis right after "This time Effie White's gonna win". It starts "Curtis, what kind of man are you / How could you try to stop Effie," and evolves into a brief reprise of "You Are My Dream", which then segues into "Hard to Say Goodbye". I think some of the lyric from the libretto made it into the movie as straight dialogue.

Wow! I heard this song thousands of times and was so impressed by Beyoncé vocals that I never put the words in the context of the scene, surprisingly. The words resonated so deeply with me this time around. Her character is literally pleading and it completely went over his head. I can’t even fathom how her character felt in that moment after putting her entire heart out and him dismissing it. Lord! I need to meditate.! That pissed me off! Lol
