    At about 2 1/2 months post ischemic stroke, I have decided to leave my trekking pole and go walk unaided. I reasoned that I would maximize my senses and balance if I let go of my Trekking Pole. It made my senses more engaged and drilled in my repairing mind that falling is not an option that's why I intensified my exercises in strengthening my feet, legs and hips as ably assisted by my Physical Therapist. Keeping sure that my sight are doing their share of maintaining my precious balance. My deepest appreciation to you Dr. Tara Tobias for being there, seeing and hearing you dish out valuable information and tips on reclaiming the lives of Stroke Survivor like me.

    I had my stroke in September of '21 . . . I've already rode a bike, skied . . . currently doing "mattress therapy" for balance . . . but I still get my affected hand caught in things like . . . the milk jug handle . . .goals.

      I also had my stroke 9/6/21. Left me with left side weakness. I am just able to walk with a severe limp, ride a stationary bike, and a little .05 on the treadmill. You have skied? Wow God bless you.

      I had an ischemic stroke November 20th 2021. I was extremely fortunate I got to the hospital within 30 minutes and had clot buster. Glad to hear that you folks are improving there is hope🎉😅 visualize and stay moving

    I've watched a "ton" of your videos and they are helpful. What I don't see (though I'm sure it's there!) is something longer that talks about the lockdowns via Covid. Though I've had some minor walking issues, I was active before and even went to the gym several times a week, but recently with these two years plus of lockdowns or slow downs, I stopped doing much outside and even much inside. Bad for me and I'm sure for a lot of people! Now I'm suffering the consequences. My city is particularly adverse to "normal" activity outside. Part of it (maybe a large part!) is mental, of course, but now I find I have to do more inside, like walking exercises, strengthening exercises, etc, whereas before being outside took care of most things. Anyway, your videos are helpful. Thanks, Doctor.

      Charles, thank you so much for watching and for sharing this. This is definitely a good topic for a future video. I have seen in real time exactly what you are describing. You haven’t done anything wrong, and you haven’t failed. For several people it was just a gradual thing that happened. And when you finally recognize it, it seems like you’ve slid all the way down the mountain. But you haven’t. Just get back on track. You got this!

    Thank you Dr. Tobias, you are the Best thing next to inpatient intensive rehab. I am 6 months out from stroke and finding you and your rehab available at my fingertips is a blessing to my life. I like the way you explain, how, why and aprx. when, all things about stroke and brain injury and it's recovery. You've talked about braces and AFO use, learning to walk again and the drills necessary to help that happen. These are my favorite topics, along with neuroplasticity. I've learned so much more from you and I just want to say THANK YOU DR. TARA. I sing your praises. God bless you.
    Update: Now 12 months out and I've gone from wheelchair to walker, to cane, and now I'm working on balance, strength, and drop foot. I'm walking again☺ maybe not so pretty but I'm up on my feet, even standing in the shower now. Being extra careful, feeling proud. Thanks Dr. Tara just listening to you is inspiring. I'm so happy you choose this forum to reach us. God bless you.

    Dr. Tobias, After hypothermia, I had extended cardiac arrest, I suffered extreme hypoxia, 28 years ago. I was young and healthy, so recovered a lot. I used a wheelchair at one time, but have run 5 K races since then. Still as I move up my body, my left sided weakness is more pronounced. Weakness isn't probably the incorrect word. It is more dexterity and speed related. After my injury my left hand tingled uncontrollably, and was in a tight contracture. My muscles were, and are still strong, and I would break all of my stringed splints. I showed my therapist how blocking my knuckles created a pivot point, and a blocking splint was devised. This in collaboration wt some acupressure, probably saved my hand. Still my thumb works on a different system, so no blocking splint could be made. My radial nerve gong into my shoulder, still has problems today. I have attempted to play guitar again. My fingers can create cords, but unfortunately leaving my thumb against the back of the guitar is very difficult. I have figured out through trial and error, a way to help the thumb, and lesson my radial nerve pain. If I place my unaffected hand on the affected hand, and push the thumb joint closest to the hand inwards. Then at the same time, I will pull the thumb out. I began to get arthritis in this thumb about 5 years ago, and would like to prevent it as long as possible. I go to the gym, and do a series of low weight, high rep exercises, and it is also helping me stay flexible and strong. A Tai Chi instructor recommended this, and it has helped me. Do you have any other suggestions? Therapy is not an option. My governmental insurance will never pay for it.

    My advice is to work on the correctness of the movement as soon as possible, and the condition as late as possible so that the regularity is not lost. Later, the compensation distorts the movements, and it is very difficult to notice and correct them. Thanks for the reminder and corrective exercises. Details are very important. Have a nice week

    Thank you Dr Tobias for your videos. You give me confidence as i watch each video. I am 6 months from a stroke. What are your thoughts on riding a bicycle? Not an indoor bike. Icould ride it at the local park.

    Thank You for your many helpful videos! I had a stroke in 2001 at 25 years old. Physical Therapy ended in 2002, as I had plateaued. I am stubborn and hired a personal trainer in 2005. He was excellent and hepled me recover further. He accepted another job in 2012 and is no longer a trainer. I have continued the exercises he gave me. I have increased my walking speed on the treadmill to 3.3mph, but I occasionally fall off. I have compromised with my husband to do walking UTube videos. I want to run again someday. How can I learn to increase my speed? Landing on the bad leg in the running mode is the instability. Sometimes I feel like I have an elephant on my bad leg. I will continue to watch the videos so please keep posting! Thank You!

    I am approaching 3 years of my Stroke. I had to deal with COVID shutdowns which interfered with my rehab. In my 4th month, my Healthcare Facility and Rehab center shut down the Rehab. Two months later, I was able to get Rehab until I got to a place of Rehab that Medicare stopped paying and got cut off again. The Health Facility where I am permanently living at stopped the Restorative program because of COVID. Now, the center has gotten to a place of relaxing COVID restrictions and allowing Rehab again, I am forced to start over and having a tough time getting back into it. Unlike most Stroke victims I have encounter, I don't see myself without a wheelchair.

    Wow. Just love your stuff., I'm 2.25 years from stroke. Covid restrictions prevented some gym and cardio. I've worked hard at home in the meantime and very active. Changed a bike to an elliptical.
    Hamstrings to the glute insertion is still a somewhat weak point as is psoas and hip. Come along way though. The hand is mostly inactive except for exercises.
    I do find that if you exercise everyday , sometimes you can become therapy burnt out. I'm very driven for betterment, so I'm trying to develop a workout program that can be concise and thorough as easier to attain on a daily basis.

    thank you for the 10+ year advice, its almost impossible to justify amd get insurance to pay for more PT therefore i have no direction, i live alone& have limited help with home program. this videos are a God send!

    Thanks for continuing to offer helpful advice through these videos. We try to follow them with our 83 y/o parent who survived a stroke in '20 (right side affected). How can he keep active if not yet able to walk (sit-stand only; uses wheelchair)?

    My wife 3 years out from her stroke has major lack of motivation or much interest in recovering her walking ability, other than what I force her through one in a while. I'm reading this is common amongst stroke survivors but not finding any solutions. I would be exercising 12 hrs a day if I knew it would improve my condition.
    I drove her to outpatient PT for most of the past 3 years but my constant pushing and arguing for home exercises is destroying our marriage. It's extremely frustrating watching someone your caring for sit all day while slowly loosing any ability they had, while giving up your own life to help them.
    I purchased various movement aids she wanted like fit bit, but unfortunately can't purchase motivation, so they all sit.

      Thanks for sharing Tim! This is an extremely common problem. Sometimes it’s related to the area of the brain that was affected by the stroke. As a therapist, I have learned that motivation needs to come from within the person. I am sure it is difficult to watch someone you love who hasn’t yet found that. But don’t give up!       Aww this is sad. I'm going through this with my mom. You just have to be stubborn. And sometimes...you just have to give them the hard facts. At some point we had to tell my mom that if she's not going to take care of herself and get better with our help at home...she's going to go back to a nursing home. Because it is a waste of her time and ours. No matter how much we love her. We have families. We have our own lives. And it's destroying us seeing her waste away day in and day out w/out caring.

      @@rehabhqofficialHi Dr Tobias. I'm 6 years post stroke due to a PFO aged 38. Left side hemiplegic. I've worked since day one with a private neuro physio twice a week. We follow the brunnstrom scale and she believes I've nearly lost all the tone..she explains the limp is due to weakness which we continue to work on. She believes there's no reason why I can't lose the limp because we are still improving every week. I guess there's always doubt with recovery.

      Also , wanted to brief, i am not able to lie on my back . Flex my knees as well . Invariably i use my hip muscles form a c to cross over. Neither can I ascend or decend stairs

    That's the last thing for me is the spasticity in right leg.. i can't figure out the right movement of that leg. I try to compare legs when walking..but this is killing my right hip and lower back I try to stretch but the more I do the more I walk the more it hurts

    I have had a nerve conduction test and brain and spine scans. Everything is normal. I still have flop foot. I found this video helpful even though I haven't had a stroke etc.

    I’ve recently had an instant slipped disc between l4 and l5 in my back while bending over, I was rushed in for spinal decompression surgery to remove the leaked disk off of my nerve, but my l5 nerve is “knocked out”. so on my right leg I have foot drop, weak hip muscles causing my hips to not support my weight, no upward flex of my big toe and the front of my shin is totally numb.
    I’m finding your video’s useful as although I’ve not had a stroke, I do have weak legs and a lot of these symptoms you describe in your video’s.
    My good leg is now my bad leg as I have had full hip replacement in my left leg due to falling on hard ground while playing football (soccer). this slipped disk incident has now ruined my right leg :( …not good when I’m only 44 :(

    All your videos are very useful. And I would love to apply these to my husband. Its now 6 months since his stroke and he refuse to have any form of exercise. Physiotherapists came and go and stop coming because my husband is not willing to make any progress. Our house has 17 steps and any appointment to doctor are very difficult or impossible for me to take him. What should he do.

    I have had many setbacks with my therapy and recovery due to covid19 regulations and sciatica etc. my cardiac arrest and stroke was May 2019. Will I still be able to walk without a walker? At this point I still need a spotter

    This is really useful, but some pictures of things that might not be familiar would be really useful. eg what is a vertical bike? Are there horizontal bikes to avoid?
    What is an elliptical? Is that one of those rubber bands. What is an AFO?
    what is dorsey flex ?

    Good message after 2018 massive stroke DVT I'd have to say that it does take several years maybe two to three before you even are capable me feeling like doing anything and I would recommend highly squats simple squats

    Thank you for the informational video. 3 years back I had a stroke I am 79 year old female. As you suggested on this vedio I already have some compensatory set back. But I do elipitical machine, treadmil, outdoor walking. After watching this video I started standing on one leg with involved leg. But I do have to hold the wall with one hand. Will it be alright to do that. My left quardsep muscule is week. I do have to lift the left leg by both hands to getinside my car. Will it be alright to do that also while standing my left knee and leg stiffens. It is alright to stand like that?

    I'm tw0 years post stroke this month and I'm still feeling my affected leg get worse some days. I try to take long walks every single day (90mins) for a total of 7.5 km. I feel it's not improving my gait. So I supplement my movement with a step over a bucket, where I repeatedly step over a bucket back and forth with my effected leg. Will it help improve control on my back leg muscles? Thanks so much, BTW, for these videos. They are really very helpful.

    I am 2 years post stroke and can only walk with a wheelie walker. I cannot put weight onto my affected leg. I do lots of exercises to put weight on that leg without success. I would love to get off my wheelie walker because i get very fatigued and i know i am leaning heavily on my wheelie walker. Any ideas?

    I had both the ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke about a year ago. I’ve been doing the exercises. I thought I was getting stronger, but it’s getting harder and harder to stand, even though I walk every day do the exercises every day I’m just looking for some buddy to talk to not necessarily for support but to just be there with me so I’m not going through it alone, I can tell I’m getting some movement and function and feeling back. It’s just getting harder. Is there any suggestions, I knew things would be getting more and more difficult as time went by

    Lordosis and knee hyperextension is reason of planter flexion tightness???because of my glutes mmt is 3+ and core also strong. So mam I am confused about this problem...thank you

    I am 6 months post stroke, left side affected. Recently lost my balance and fra tured my right fibula shaft. Talk about a blow to all the progress I have made so far😢
    Any suggestions on how to move forward with my good leg (right) now in a boot and my left leg (affected side) not being strong enough to lean on completely for balance? I get up and move as much as I can, walking small steps and standing up while leaning on a counter. Im trying to teach myself left right first rather than right dominant foot which cant have a lot of weight on it while recovering.

    I am retired and have the time to respond to peoples comments, but I would like some people to go through it with me so I don’t get discouraged. I had very good balance before this and now it’s abysmal I am at the point where I can still stand up, but I kind of fall backwards, is there any suggestions?

    Hi! I am 16 months out and had my stroke at 38yrs old. I have definitely developed some bad habits of raising my hip and circumduction when walking :( If I have spasticity in my leg but my ankle does not roll when I squat, do I need the wedge?

      Somewhat. There is data that suggested 45 min of daily moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise slows the loss of the dopamine producing neurons in the substantia nigra. With that said, when it comes to parkinsons disease, generally speaking, unless there is pain associated with movement, get in that cardio. :) Also there are excellent programs such as pedalling for parkinsons and rock steady that are a great way to add variety. They have classes in almost every major city.
