- Today I take a look at the recently released Mini-Documentary that the BBC filmed at the Shaolin Temple in China.
I spend three years at the Shaolin Temple training with the monks so this one is particularly interesting to me because I immediatly recognized the face on the thumbnail. So why not use this opportunity to give you guys my insights into how these videos are made and how accurate they actually are. ENJOY!

You haven't posted in 9 months, what happened?
How much of that BBC documentary was propaganda? Well, if I'm understanding you correctly; almost all of it. Lol
i was literally thinking "what if ranton is in china at shaolin temple" and then u post this a week ago and im like "oh... ok."
Do you think UFC fighters would easily beat a shaolin monk?
BBC documentary: *Lion chases Zebra*
Zebra: “we don’t usually get chased there but it’s great for filming”.
Lmao
Rofl, I just added read that with the cast of Madagascar in my head lol

@@wyattross1461 see how nobody liked the comment? Nobody cares and isnt at all funny.
Plagiarism should really only be taken seriously for serious work. I.e. courseworks. A YT comment does not matter when it comes to plagiarism.

"Only beatings and yelling." Didn't know my family had so many Shaolin masters.
I literally 🔥 just farted 💨 🤗
I feel your pain on a spiritual level xD
and they were secretly training you to become like them while performing these
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That's where the joke that everyone in Asia knows kung fu came from.
I like how he explains that every single scene in the documentary is actually completely set up just for tv purposes, and then he concludes "this video is actually one of the best ive seen" xD
I think he only liked it because almost all the people who were shown were people he knew plus the nostalgia of some of the filming locations. It makes me think his final verdict is more of a "guilty pleasure" sort of thing......but I really would like to know what the other "Shaolin" documentaries Ranton has seen show if this was supposedly the best he's seen so far?
I think he said that because that is the closest film to approach the reality, even though almost every scene is staged.
That's because he cut the video a lot. What was left in? Mostly the parts he disagreed or saw someone familiar to him.
We literally don't see it from his perspective because he cut out most of it - which is why the summary of his looks odd and funny for us.
Best doesn't mean realistic
He is literally saying media talks shit only to make it look more exotic and fascinating.
"Discovered by Hollywood"
Ranton: **visible disgust**
Ranton: *did not watch TV show "Kung Fu" where David Carradine is playing Shaolin monk and selling to the people this idea that Sholin monks are so into spiritual meditation*
@@Bialy_1 Is that the actor who killed himself with erotic-asphyxiation? *Spiral Fitness starring David Carradine intensifies*
Obviously it wasn't "discovered by hollywood" but it also wasn't discovered by hong kong cinema. The Hollywood TV show "Kung Fu" which started in 1972 and ended 1975 partially helped made Shaolin Temple big again, and was signficantly before the two hong kong movies he shows/mentions, "Shaolin Temple" which was in 1981, and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978). The earliest Hong Kong films that heavily feature Shaolin Temple that I can find, or feature it at all, were in 1974, 2 years after the Hollywood TV show Kung Fu in 1972 was a huge hit and helped make it big again.
Because only WP/institutions and the colonizers can "discover" everything except humility, honesty and minding their own business.
@@dannyhightower911 : DVD did not existed in 1970s, let's be honest about that. So his perception of the world.. through a time-manner and historical manner does NOT exist? Have you noticed this? So even just based on what you wrote, it is correct then... it "was" created in Hollywood, in 1972 !!!
According to wiki:
" In October 1971, the PRC replaced the Republic of China in the United Nations, and took its seat as a permanent member of the Security Council."
So that, this is correct. PRC was formed in 1971. The Hollywood "discovered" Shaolin in 1972. The viewer, assumes that, this is a "globalist" view. "Shaolin had always existed, and was never "discovered"...." Well.. hardly the correct context, is it ?!....
I have never seen this man before, and nor have I actually known that, people inside China, and in the USA.. is getting more arrogant on social media. Like, the rest of the world does not exist. And it is very funny too, that he just knows about HK, but he had NO idea.. about the rest of the world, and their help, or involvements, in helping the world rise in wealth. Even Yukon Wang would not say such things. I can now see why having a foreign individual, in another country really help settle the world's global views.

To the viewers:
It is NOT the media that presented Shaolin Temple the way you see in this documentary. It is the marketing department from Shaolin! Shaolin has evolved so much to monetize everything during recent years under some leaders. They did not interfere anything about the way of training and meditating, but they did teach their monks how to behave in front of the cameras, how to perform regular performance for tourists, how to sell the peaceful and cultured Shaolin Temple Idea with a Kungfu force just to protect their villages.
"He's smiling, but you should..see him teach". paused for a while, remembering all the yelling and pinching 😆
*There’s only beatings, and yellings.*

Just found your channel and love this video. I had the pleasure to train at the Shaolin temple while in Zhengzhou as my dojo travelled through China. One of my favourite memories was being trained in one of the 'tourist' areas you mentioned that was not typically used...which meant when the daily groups of American paying tourists came visiting expecting to see expert Shaolin monks fighting all they saw was a bunch of white Canadians doing the absolute basics.
Hahaha sounds like they're masters in the art of trolling as well
just watching this and realizing this guy actually is one of the modern real shaolin who came from china and decided to share his story casually to the world, telling how it really is from the real perspective is amazing. The world is so amazing
What is so amazing? he gets paid for sharing from the views
@@G0ddEityawesome Him DECIDING to share it is not amazing or special. U misunderstood. I don't mean it like "oh shit a shaolin monk broke silence and shared ancient secret!" I'm from China. The secret of shaolin is no mystery at all. It's basically a tour spot. What I find Special. Is that. We chinese know that there are only a Handful of shaolin monks. Like under 200..and based on the photo. This guy is one of the major ones. I just find it really rare and funny and such a rare chance that a guy/spot I used to go on tour as a kid. A guy I probs have seen. From a poor area of China. Is now someone with millions of subs in the US. That's what's amazing. Shows everything can happen in the world
@@mikeyelnats4798 : He is trying to say.. but he said it in bad English... He is trying to say that Shaolin Temple is a place of training army combatant people. And not a sports as it is portrayed in Western media. These fighters are taught how to fist fight using martial art techniques. And that they are expected to protect their own temples as well as their nearby villages. This is his point. That is what he is trying to say. Some people.. or the Western media, portray "temples" to mean "religion or philosophy"... but in this instance, it is a "army training ground" !!!! The super traditional kind !
Some chinese people knows this. Some don't. The ones that don't.. will spread the myths of it being a health thing and whatever.. but the ones that do.. would know what Shaolin is all about. And when they tour abroad... They are not merely "performing". They are being invited to show you what they can do. As in.. a real threat. Cos it is a fight. So.. which country sends their army people abroad to "show off" ???.... Who does this ?....
If they do show off, I presume that, the money that they make, is taken back to the temple.. and also to their nearby villages.. Presumably in a to feed the poor scenario...

Monks on BBC: "You must calm your mind"
Ranton: "This is inaccurate, he's not getting beaten with a stick."
When I was considering joining the military, I looked up some bootcamp videos on youtube and thought that the training didn't look so bad. Then the comments were filled with vets lamenting about how inaccurate it was. I guess we all perform for the camera a bit :/...
Even martial art that aren't as hardcore as this, you get beaten with sticks. I remember one day coming home with my wrist red full of little blood spots from the hitting. We were hitting each other with bamboo swords and wooden sticks. Then we trained to dodge stabbing but it was with wooden knives. To say the least, not enjoyable but good because it makes you tougher.

"Shaolin for him meant war", that's the most badass thing I've ever heard.
Ikr
Gilbert Rueger I mean what do you think the “martial” part of martial arts means?
Probably give the guy about 11 seconds against Mike Tyson in his prime. Who cares about 'war' and silly words. They mean nothing when you are picking your teeth up off the floor, or as we found in Syria, someone elses entire head.
Rainfeather Precisely; I respect Shaolin for the discipline presented by many (if not all) of its members. But there is a reason that Kung Fu is not used by virtually any major mixed martial artist; despite looking really cool, most MMA fighters would wipe the floor with the average Kung Fu practitioner.
Arminius Chieftain of the Cherusci I get the vibe of what you are trying to convey. Sadly many of these monks are simply charlatans with no actual fighting ability. The Information Age has exposed that all too well, so I won’t focus too much on it. We all know their ‘styles’ are all useless. I’m still baffled as to why so many dedicate their time to such nonsensical rubbish but that’s besides the point. You are certainly right about discipline in all its forms being admirable and I only wish that it was always well placed in things that are worthwhile. If this gentleman regards war as his primary concern he should be mindful of advances in the sphere of combat and that MMA (the mentality, similarly conveyed in JKD concepts) is the only effectual and worthwhile approach.
With old so called ‘masters’ in the past, off the top of my head the likes of Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi; who also championed adaptation and thinking off the cuff - you’d have thought they would have been wise to all of it years ago.
Instead they prey on people’s lack of common sense. Short and direct is always best. It’s what’s kept boxing around for so long. You don’t need complicated. In the heat of it, it can and will get you killed.

maybe i shouldn't tell you too much but from one of my close friend who's borned in henan, he repetitively tells me of sighting monks who drinks in bars, drinks beer at street stalls and grab girlfriends for ONS all the time, Shi Yongxin an abbot of the monastery is basically acting like a money boss these days, owning a handful of business in town, makes money off a handful of film and video game company partnerships and having scandals of multiple divorced wives(not sure if true), a while ago he called out to help the divorced movie star Wang Baoqiang with money, because he used to be a disciple in the temple, these shit all goes against a traditional image of an monk, not to mention being an abbot. So sorry to ruin the image for you yet again, I know this might be the reality of the China today and such might be one of the only ways for shaolin to survive, but sometimes it's nothing but a niche business

He was a Shaolin monk that cane here from China and the training was rough, he used to sneak up behind us with a bamboo rod when we were doing isometric exercises, if you let you arm or leg drop, he would smack you hard in the ankle, the workouts were brutal. I will never forget that training, I was only there about 6 months because I came from a poor family and we could not afford the monthly cost. He is gonna eat the hell out of the documentaries ass
Big Black Clock.
Except its not even a documentary really its a series called sacred wonders and was more about the places of wonder around the planet and one or two days in the places year that are special to that faith.
Thank You very much for sharing this info, Greetings from Chile.
Much respect bro from 🇳🇿
Speaking of “ videos popping on their recommendations. “ this video had surprisingly popped up in mine lmao.

I regret
This is the video that really makes me question documentaries about other cultures //significantly//
Thanks.
It amazes me that this is a documentary and yet so many things are set up for camera purposes 😊
BBC: Shaolin training is very spiritual...
Real Shaolin monk: I SEE BLOOD AND WAR!!!
😂😂😂
Fucking up your enemies on a very spiritual level.

This breakdown is so interesting how have I not seen this yet
A few years ago the BBC also had a series about an English Shaolin monk who was trying to find people with the potential to go to train at Shaolin Temple. Few made it through the selection process and many couldn't cope with the harsh training. Unfortunately there seem to be no videos on RUclips about it and I can't recall the name of the series! If anyone knows they can maybe give you another programme to watch and comment on.
It's like Ranton flipping through a yearbook of all his old Shaolin friends and teachers.
this man looks likes he's having vietnam flashbacks every time he talks about the training
unhappy shaolin guy? huh.
Maybe, but is ok, the other s temples never show the skill for cameras.. this is ok
oof-
He isn’t Vietnamese
@@thebeastgt2116 I never said he was
@@njr-hp9qr I hope he meant that as a good joke and upvoted :).
I actually took a picture with the master at 10:36 at one of my kung fu competitions. He was so kind, it’s so surprising to see him in a yt vid!
Thank you! Extremely useful sincerity.
“Don’t be a like a rabbit that keeps on finding carrots. And then when he finds the next carrot he drops the carrot that he first has”
This hit me deep
Jay Kay thats me in life ;_; i take one, get a bite of it, and find another
I know the version of a dog who drops a bone when he sees a bigger bone, but than another dog takes the bigger bone and the old bone he drops is gone.
Wait. I should marry the first girl? 😦
You can't apply this to real life it's just another typical fancy saying.
If you have a job and they offer you a promotion don't accept it because whatever
That's stupid, you can move on to next carrot when you're done with first. just do it properly.
BBC: These highly skilled, religious, incredibly ceremonious monks.......
Ranton: These are my bros and we don't do any of this fancy shit or train in any of those places.
They do those fancy things, just in very non-fancy areas. Because all the fancy areas are for tourists.
That place is beautiful thanks for showing it
Ok I just discovered this channel last night and this guy is absolutely cool
I have learned something after watching this;
*Never trust the camera*
But you trust this guy ? For all we know he's saying just as much bullshit
@@Birmill I mean he was a student there so he knows better than those reporters or don't tell me you were the principal of that school 🤣
@@zaki7212 lol
@Jacob Sirak I'm not saying he never trained there. But making super fishy youtube videos with fishy titles and fishy thumbnails for money doesn't sound much Shaolin
@@Birmill This man is doing things like how the other experts are doing it. “The real disciple” thing from the titles isn’t new. Also what is so wrong with the thumbnail?
BBC: Makes a video about space exploration.
Astronaut Reacting To The Video: Nobody actually goes there, it looks cool for filming though.
That's true thou in reality no one know how milky way looks like but you see it in every documentary
😂😂😂😂
Probably on pluto
Lucas Corey if we strip the earth of its atmosphere you can literally fucking see the Milky Way. Not hard to view it
Every family photo ever: They look so happy and like they really love each other.
Everyone in the photo: Not that I don't respect my family, but mom said if we don't smile and act like we love each other, she's going to beat us and then not make our favorite food.
I loved the "beatings" and "yellings" part.Talking from experience I bet
The bunny with the carrot explanation is such a good way to put it.
