The point of this video, in combination with my other Shaolin related content, is to attempt to paint the Temple as what it is: A complicated place with a nuanced history that's facing a lot of challenges these days. Although the internet isn't the best place for nuance, at least I want to try. There are people on one side overly idealizing the Shaolin Temple and on the other side you have people who don't know anything about it, slamming it endlessly. Look for people who dont oversimplify is all I am saying.

I'm Chinese and everything you said is so real and authentic down to the details of the living condition and the environment awareness, the politics stuff and 关系 will hit home for any Chinese watching this because it's so true. I can't imagine even staying a month there (I'm a city kid) need hot shower and decent food everyday lol. I'm so proud of you that you stayed 3 years there best of luck.

@pepe roni I’m from the west and I don’t really understand what you mean by “networking” in your sense. As far as I’m aware over here networking would be essentially just getting contacts you could perhaps use for assistance even if you don’t know them very well. Is it the same for u guys?

The burning of plastic is probably the worst. That can cause cancer. I think given that issue I wouldn’t want to expose myself to that.
To be honest, if you’re not Chinese, you likely won’t get into a real Shaolin temple just because of that fact.
They do not like foreigners because foreigners (Most especially westerners) have been Abusing the generosity of the Monks for so long that these days they block the majority of foreigners no matter who they are.
If you’re not Chinese, born in China, and you don’t speak fluent Chinese, then you likely aren’t going to ever be a part of real Shaolin.
There are better people at better places though who will train you with more personal and individual compassion than the Monks too

He also talked about monks doing drugs, going to prostitutes, gambling, eating meat, and getting drunk in his other video... lol
I think this only applies to shaolin warriors monks... Because warrior monks are allowed to eat meat and drink alcohol of course not inside the temple but outside like restaurant while shaolin monks are opposite, they are not allowed to eat meat nor drink. They are what exactly you think they are, they are like priest.

Some young monks where I live have several girlfriends while people think that monks shouldn't date a girl or have a wife.
Our local shrine's senior monk here has a very beautiful wife and they look great together when he wasn't wearing his monk clothes.
Point is monks or not, they're still humans. They have human desires and human emotions. They can suppress it, but they can't completely toss it.
It maybe bit different among temple monks in Shaolin. But they're still humans.

In my country "Algeria" we deal with those situations every day (political, water and electrical outage..ect)
China and eastern Europe aren't too dissimilar! I've lived in Romania and power outages were a monthly thing. Lack of water not so much (luckily!)

Your videos about Shaolin reminds me of my own experience at FaWang Temple back in 2005 at 10, 2007 at 12 and 2010 at 15 years old. Good memories. Still was a kid, couldn’t appreciate a lot of things I had back then. Would give everything to live that again actually.

Thank you. I did not know why you tube kept on suggesting your videos. As an athlete I experience exactly the same, on events my performance decreased in a dramatic way. My body would start reacting the day before and forget sleeping. Im sorry to hear the temple is not what weve been shown all these years but nothing lately seems to be. I miss spending time in a disciplined, structured environment too. Being part of something bigger than me but I also remember not enjoying my time there as much as I think I did now. I learnt my lessons afterwards. I spent too much time involved in people things to see it then. I guess, overcoming people things was a lesson too. Thank you for your videos, I enjoy them a lot .

With the exception of the first point, which is something I usualy experience due to living on an island, almost every other point very identical of my army training in the infantry, to a frightening extend even. As for the toilet thing...I feel you and I'm sorry you had to experience that.
Great video, one of the most relatable. And thank you for giving me some closure on that chapter of my life, I feel like I needed to hear someone with similar experiences say that as well.
When you're serious, and during certain critiques in other videos, you seem fairly wise and aware. Articulation is very good in many instances when not impaired by your own discomfort of the topic. I think not only myself but others truly appreciate the further humble explanations of your Shaolin life.

Like if you have business you employ family and promote them regardless of their ability and it could be really harmful to other employee or just the business as a whole. Or police/politician or any other people in power give special treatment to criminal
I'm on the receiving end as well so I can testify, I get ticket from ignoring traficlight as teenager, don't even have license. But I went basically with just a slap in the wrist, because I have aunt and uncle working for the police. I paid like 10 USD fine and didn't have to do anything else like going to court and the like. I also got my driving license easily once I come to age without any test cuz we bribe 50 USD lmao.
I would imagine getting your license would be a nightmare as someone with some record no matter how light, and the test also take a long time as well on top of having to wait weeks to get the license ready, I got mine in 3 days, my friend took half a month to get his.
Small stuff like that is fun as someone who benefit, but looking back and especially knowing it happen everywhere at any level it is quite concerning. This means a lot of people did not have the qualification necessary so the rate of accident or something going wrong is higher than it should be and so on.
If a nobody like me could get away with so much, imagine what people with actual power could. Sad stuff

Hey man it depends on the person like the commebt above said, you can train at shaolin for many years and dont have inner peace, like ranton said there were mean people there, and enlightment it requires more than just hardcore training, you have to fast, eat raw fruits/vegetables, and dont waste your sexual energy, i would bet none of the monks there have reached enlightment
the major injury he had was prob one of the main reasons he left. without that happening he'd prob still be there
Enlightenment and inner peace are just buzzwords created to support something, in this case the temple.

Just wanted to say that I appreciate your videos. Love your game reviews, so f*cking funny. And I love the Shaolin videos because you give a view that's rarely seen and I myself love martial arts and wish I could have had the opportunity as a young man to train in some form but being a young black man in Tennessee, the dirty south, was not easy and I was a focused basketball player until very bad decisions took me to living the street life. Now I'm about to be 40 and have a 9 year old son and a 2 year old daughter. My son actually loves to watch martial arts movies and videos with me. My son has hearing loss in both ears, left ear is almost completely def. My question is can he still train and learn martial arts even with that disability, and I hate saying disability, so I call it an obstacle to overcome. I need the opinion of a expert, only if you have time. Thanks for all the amazing content and Happy Holidays to your family

It's normal to romanticize the past but it's important not to get trapped by it. Like you said, there were some experiences that weren't so good during those times that, upon further reflection, had you reevaluating your feelings towards it. One needs to remember the full experience, as it was. Otherwise, they end up cheating themselves of the wisdom gained during that experience and will have difficulty moving forward.

Truly, truly liked this video. It reveals a slice of life that has given me a much clearer insight about the life of a training disciple, and more broadly, about that part of China. It seems that relationship and networking still play a huge role in it nowadays and that the idyllic image of the hermit monks is a bit too much a fairy-tale.
Wanting to be a shaolin monk was my first desire as a very young child probably around 4 years old and was the reason I trained in different martial arts throught my life. I am not sure if I ever will move to China to be a monk for a while, but thank you so much for sharing your experiences as it lets me feel more informed about something I have the biggest passion and love for.
Actually, thank you for talking about the bad things too. Sometimes, especially in documentaties, the temple gets too much idolisation.
Another thing I didn't know, is that the monks eat meat. Im about to start training at a kung fu school in my town and on its website, it talks about the monk diet being vegan ONLY.

I think it was honest of you to say you would get nervous and light headed, the same thing happens to me, especially when I don’t expect a confrontation like I am going to the grocery store or at my work and suddenly I have an altercation that I had not initiated and suddenly I get nervous and light headed and even alittle weakness as I mentally prepare for a possible physical altercation, which I will not back down from because of personal honor, but at the end nothing happens. I guess when an altercation is unexpected the effect on the mind and body is more intense than if you know you are going into something that can be dangerous.

I really respect Ranton because one hes able to really respect himself,shalion temple and even his subscribers and very true true to himself and about a year ago I stumbled upon ur video and was super intrigued and I always wanted to know how life went on over there I watched a lot of kun fu movies and wanted to compare and for sure its different and I have even thought about going to the shalion temple just to study martial arts in other words just thank u for being very helpful man keep up the good work and thank u for explaining it man 👍👍👍👍👍
