In my life I'm sure I could never find anyone to play this game with but the review was entertaining as hell.
you can play with other people asynchronously online on a site sanctioned by the game creators: play.boardgamecore.net/
Eric Finley p p
i own the game and i know that feeling :(
I guess playtime is an issue for some. How about kicking that "we dont know when the game ends"-thing and going for a short version? Better than playing not at all, right? And when everyone is hooked you can still add it again.
Thats me and mage wars. lol
I literally sing this same egg song whenever I make eggs now. Send help.
Has anyone noticed how it seems that some board games grossly underestimate the amount of time it actually takes to play, even if you know the game?
they really do, the boxes might say 1 hour, and realistically it winds up taking 3. I feel like it's done for marketing purposes, you think a game might be reasonably quick but once you've bought it you're stuck with the longer game time.
Which isn't necessarily bad to me, if the game is good, but if it's a drag and the box lied I feel a little cheated.
Alot of the time it's because the people making those estimateshave played the game a whole lot so their playthroughs are really fast.
I believe it's also part of a psychological factor. If you did not have a watch and at the end of a certain game one would ask how much time has passed, would you guess correctly? Would you guess "two hours" if you were really not paying attention at time but at the game? I think is much better that they underestimate the time, otherwise people would go "OMG 3 HOURS? NO WAY!", and they might really enjoy the game but "their time is too precious"
A lot of board gamers end up saying a game is X amount of minutes or hours "box time" because of how different the numbers can be. Analysis paralysis can destroy any suggestion the cardboard box has for game time, and there are definitely some games that are a mental slog until a handful of plays or more.
I'd wager games with a bigger skill ceiling tend to underestimate playtimes the most because the designer and play testers are giving you a time after you get over the initial "what do I do in this strange weird new game" hump.
Food Chain Magnate is actually fairly on the ball about it's playtime. Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends says it plays in 30 minutes, and trying to figure out how that is possible is almost as difficult as trying to make a good move in that game :P
A fair point. I often experience that "What do I do with this strange new game" every time I pull out axis and allies. lol I keep wanting to get rid of it, but my girlfriend insists I should hold onto it.
"It's my turn now, BUSINESS" is maybe my favourite line in all of SUSD
It's up there with "Chin chin, mine's a lumpy one."
It’s rare to be able to say that just one word completely sold me on a board game, but “BUSINESS” was definitely such a case.
The "man enjoys garden lifestyle" scene was far more entertaining than it had any right to be.
That's something of a SU&SD signature I'm realizing. (cramming entertainment into the smallest things, i mean - not men in gardens...)... That and hilarious similes... and being so generous with the word 'generous'...
For playing FCM I recommend buying some business card holders for all the cards because it saves a TON of table space and replacing the paper money with poker chips because they're so much more durable and convenient than paper money.
Impressive, very nice. Now let’s see Paul Allen’s corporate structure.
I found playing FCM like watching an Ingmar Bergman film: punishing, unforgiving, brutal and uncomfortable. However I felt spirituality rewarded having played (the next day tho). It also has a very serious runaway leader problem.
“i’m getting you a hamburger!”
“why??”
“Because you’re not a twerp!”
You are making the PERFECT reviews. It shows exactly the moments thereviewers should focus on. The emotions, the mechanics. It is just amazing how perfect you are describing my feeling about those games. It matches my conclusions almost 1:1.
This is easily one of my favorite SU&SD episodes! I have watched it at least 4 times on the last month or two. Makes me want to pick up this game each time! I did actually see it in stock at my local game store and I swooned with excitement!!
Absolutely SU&SD cold hard classic stuff. I remember watching this review years ago and hoping one day to play, thanks to the powers of BGG trades I’m close to closing my excited fingers around this monstrous beast 😄
"Antonio get's fired." was so good I almost want to write it on my box as a custom tagline.
Matt in the garden at the end is too perfect
" I buy what I want "
I like this vid for this sentence before I even finish watching it lol.
Thank you so much for the reviews.. so entertaining. So glad you're on RUclips now!
I want an "unhappy meal".
When I played this game, I started out winning by a little, then I was winning by quite a bit, then I was winning by more than everybody else had together. That's not a good design for a long game in my opinion.
That is not a terrible design if that process takes, say, 20 minutes, and not 2 hours.
That's a great design IMO. I want the better person to win. I don't want to spend a long time seeing who lady luck favors more. You can always concede if you feel like the game is a forgone conclusion. But this game has different power arcs too. I've seen someone win who had no money until the last couple turns.
Second best comment. Thank you.
like a fish in a pocket.
You know, I've watched this like 5 times, and I only now got the joke in the opening skit.
The joke being that in FCM, billboards affect only houses that they are directly adjacent to, which is just... not how billboards work.
love the reviews, informative and funny, you deserve so many more subscribers....well you just got one more.
The second I saw that The Wicked + The Divine poster I started loving you guys even more than before! One of the best comic series I've ever read, it's way too underrated!
GREAT review. Definitely contributed to my enthusiasm and eventual acquisition of Food Chain Magnate, and let me tell you, the game DELIVERS. As SU&SD mentioned, for how "heavy" and "serious" the game is, it's singularly easy to learn and play.
Always love the content guys!
Have bought so many games after you're reviews!
They are indeed reviews
This video makes so much more sense after playing food chain magnate! Spot on and great review.
0:56 NOOO YOU CAN SEE THE CAMERAMAN NOO WHY HATH THOU FORSAKEN US
You just kind of go, "It's my turn now... BUSINESS"
That intro was so wholesome!
8:49 I do indeed have a garden, in one of the most popular holiday destinations in Northern Europe. And it has a dog. And she'll bark at you for free. Feel free to swing by any time.
The answer to "how long" is to see you game night as a social gathering and not a chore.
You are going to spend the whole Saturday evening with your friends having fun, chatting, making dinner etc. You start off with this game, and if it takes 2 hours, you play another game that you know will take about two hours, and if it takes 4 hours, you fire up the bbq and start prepping the food.
Yeah, I'd have no issues playing a really good game that goes on for a long time with my regular group who are pretty serious hobbyist gamers and that's clearly who FCM is aimed at.
That said, at least a few comments here do seem to suggest that it has quite a serious runaway winner problem and if a game is going to be really long, it kind of has to be fun for *everyone* at the table. I think most people struggle to have fun in a four hour competitive game if it's obvious that they can't win, or even come close to winning, by the two hour mark.
@@leeprice133 That is the issue with many games, many 18xx games, Through the Ages, Food Chain magnate all "suffer" from "every turn matters".
You solve this by helping those that are new to the game, or by admitting that the game is a learning experience.
If people are equally matched (and good enough to not play the worst moves) the leader runaway will not be an issue.
Also, in my experience, FCM does not really suffer from leader runaway. While every turn matters, the game can be swung in the last few rounds if you have a long game that can be adapted to overcome the current leader.
@@57thorns yeah that's entirely fair and I'm not personally in a position to judge whether or not it's as much of a problem for FCM as some people say.
I'm seeing a few people here saying they really disliked the game due to small mistakes causing them to fall way behind and the game to be unwinnable, and thought I might throw in my two cents after playing: I agree the game is cut-throat and mistakes are punished, but I actually really enjoyed that aspect - sure it was obvious I had no chance of winning half-way through the game but compared to some other games like 7 Wonders or Dominion when the game suddenly ends and I'm left confused where it all went wrong, I love how its so clear how I could play better next time - can't wait to play this again using what I learned.
Just got my copy of FCM can't wait for watching it sit on my shelf while I find people to play it with
The smallest of Splotter games that still fills a table and then some.
"An uncontrollable lust for meat" lust in its most traditional form.
Goes to buy the game* why must it be 136 dollars
It's 186 now
I come from the future! I am here to let you know the game is gonna be rereleased!
Finally got to play this yesterday and it is a love it or hate it game. I liked making the corporate structures that decide what actions you take during the turn. But this game has a ridiculous amount of action paralysis that grinds everything to a halt three times a turn as people decide who to hire that turn, who to train that turn, where and what to advertise. It can't be stressed enough that this game punishes any misplay and make you regret a move you made two turns into the game. Not a fan of this game but I can totally see why you guys liked it.
AP for news obviously but with familiarity the AP goes down drastically
Most useful comment. Thank you.
Looks great. But I'm afraid it would fall victim of my other heavier (and long playtime) games, forgotten on my shelf.
16:34 Honestly can't tell if Quinns is crying, or trying frantically to stop himself from laughing.
Great review, thanks! Want to play this, want to own it... need to find interested people locally!
If only I had a friend to play with
THE OPEN DRINKS ON THE TABLE MAKE ME SO ANXIOUS
Be careful wishing for a garden, Quinns! It'll take up one of the three desires in your life, and you'll only have space for two more!
My god, I probably watched this video 3-4 times and it's the first time I noticed your t-shirt Quinn, I approve!!!!!
Great review. Great delivery!
This may have convinced me not to buy the game. My playmate hates losing so much that we’ve made the running joke that playing Risk is more accurately Risk... your relationship. Some competitive games have proven to be fine but we shifted to playing mostly cooperative games because I was so traumatized. It’s a shame because he’s a marketing major and I think he would get a kick out of this, but cutthroat for 2-4+hrs? I don’t think so...
I think "uncontrollable lust for meat" may have been the name of my prog-rock band's second album back at university ...
@Shut Up & Sit Down Do you recommend this over the classic Brass (Lancashire)?
That ending 😂
This is the finest game ever designed, revealing a deep and rewarding experience with multiple plays. It doesn't hold your hand like a lot of other inferior games.
I recently played a 4 player of this with my family. They loved it and have requested another session.
15:40 - that was me. i absolutely hated it, lol.
Wants!! All Spotter games are super expensive though. Some day!
Guys, I loved your video and the game. I just tried it for the first time today with no training. But man, pure strategy! No die, no card draw, no guess work. This is a wonderful game and unlike chess, it has so many “systems,” as you said. Anyone; this is a wonderful game with so many ways of winning it’s almost hard to fathom. I’m going to buy this one for sure, it’s a diamond in the rough, so to speak. Oh, and thanks for the entertaining video…just try to remember your lines…or, we might have to break you legs! :)
I have a garden.
I love you guys.
2-4hr is short to mid game mode, it can go longer.
This, this was great :)
Who knew "Gosh Lemonade" could be so scary?
Ordered this on NerdzDay 2022 but I'm only now getting around to watching this. It's not the type of game I typically play, as I highly value RNG and don't care so much for cut throat mechanics. But all the hubbub about this game got to me, and now this video makes me even more excited to give it a try. Can't wait! :)
How did it go?
@@jamesderiven1843 Gonna be a while before I get this to the table.
After re-watching this for an unknown amount, I am now wondering: Any plans to review the expansion?
We usually talk about expansions on the podcast www.shutupandsitdown.com/podcastle/podcast-103-welcome-to-the-ketchup-age/
@@shutupandsitdown Ooh. Thank you! :D
god I love this intro
The part where he said "you could hire a crack marketing team" had me laughing cause the only thing I thought of is oh no the business is failing what do we do oh I know lets market some crack!
Be My Baby: The Very Best of the Ronettes
Very cool choice. *sips milkshake while wearing sunglasses*
Awesome stuff. This game has intimidated me but it sounds like it is not super heavy?!
uuuuh, I just LOVE the credit Tee
I have a Garden! It's for my spaniel.
I have the same cooking pan!
I read that as "eggs are for terfs"
So review of the ketchup soon ?
The best SU&SD review, and possibly THE best board game I've played.
How is this game so damn ugly and still so immensely expensive
Splotter
Great video 👍 very very entertaining.
Now he might have a Garden, but he does have to pay double for his food. ;)
Wow. Really pushed the boat out on the artwork there.
300 dunkeroos down here, holy shit i want it but not that much.
My house has a garden, call me Quinns *wink*
y u make me want to buy every game?
Aaaaw, poor Quins!!
if it wasn't $100 then maybe.
Makes egg like a freaken psychopath
Looks really good, but sure I could play a board game for 4.5 hours??? :(
Heeeeeey! The Wicked + The Divine!
Wow... wonder about a game you have just found out and find that SUSD has a review for it and in RUclips?! And where is the other guy?! Its been a long time i guess...
Paul? He moved to Canada. He still does reviews, but they're less frequently done with Quinns. They did just do Inis together, though.
Breakfast Egg - $11,000 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"Kokie kola"
Can you guys please take a look at Splotter's 'Bus' - capstone-games.com/board-games/bus/ It was the first worker placement game ever and got a reprint in 2019 by Capstone. It is simple, mean, and easy to play - a delicious under-the-radar gem. A review would be amazing (the Hansa Teutonica treatment).

I miss making eggs for good friends...
I once made a game similar to this
Because you're not a twerp! Still cracks me up
I can't find this game anywhere.
If they enjoyed this game, they really need to play Sidereal Confluence.
omg... 6 years old...
How in hell is this game worth 100 bloody dollars !?
Welcome to Canada. The cheapest I've seen this game is 125$. Most of the time it hovers around 135.
I saw it for 160 at my FLGS in Canada. Obviously, you can get it cheaper online, but that only means 120.
It is so expensive because they insist on doing tiny print runs.
@@KissellMissile But why?? Why do they do that? I don't get it, tons of people would buy it if it wasn't this expensive
@@carolinarobles7599 it's always easier to keep doing what you are doing than to find new ways of doing things.
Matt has a garden that big?! In Balham?!
